I get so frustrated when people scream that movies aren’t feminist if they don’t have a female lead that yells at men about their rights and fights with a weapon. Quiet romantic stories can be feminist too. Cinderella’s gentleness, kindness, forgiveness, and emotional strength is a great example for young girls!!

I think that the "why didn't she just save herself?" rhetoric also reveals a gross misunderstanding of what it means to be in a domestic abuse victim.
No one really wants to acknowledge that Ella did not have the resources to leave until she met the prince. It's not like she was being paid to do all of that labor work, nor did she have the time to seek outside employment. If she were to decide to leave, like so many people in the modern day want her to, she'd have nothing to support her. There was no way Tremaine didn't know that when she dismissed the staff in the 2015 vers. She was deliberately trying to isolate Ella, and it worked. The prince, unfortunately, was one of the few people in her life who was able to get her out of that situation.
Idk, there's a distinct lack of empathy for Ella in the modern day that's really uncomfortable if you sit down and think about the reason why Cinderella is so disliked.

@@julessosaqtana6019 Hello??? They wanted her to abandon her house to these people? Like this is her mom and dad's home. Yeah folks are not really thinking when they disrespect Cinderella like this. Here is a woman who has zero resources and zero community. I mean she isn't even allowed to have community. Think about why the step mother refused to let Cinderella go to the ball? It was to keep her isolated and alone because that is how she controls her. Plus being a woman with zero resources or community out in the world is exactly how you end up in even worse situations. The "save yourself/just leave" mindset is so harmful and unhelpful. Plus Cinderella does save herself by marrying the prince. Anybody with any type of experience/interactions with domestic abuse know that even trying to "save" a victim of domestic abuse cannot work unless the person emotionally ready and prepared. Anybody who had someone they love in an abusive relationship knows how hard/long it can take to convince them to leave. The fact that Cinderella left with the prince is her 100% saving herself. There are plenty of people that couldn't do that. Not everyone takes the help when you offer it to them the first time or even first few times.

people forget where would she go?? she was raised in that home and being homeless was basically a death sentence or far worse than being a maid and while she's a hard worker, she was raised in wealth as a child and on her own she'd be possibly sold into prostitution or servitude with a strange family anyway.
also i always saw it as empowering? a man did not save her, she saved herself. had she not left her home, had she not been kind and blessed by her fairy godmother, the prince would've never known her and nothing would've happened. sure the idea of a man saving her seems to be the surface message, but to me she was the reason things worked out. the men almost left when she was locked in the attic it was the mice and her courage that pushed the movie forward and saved her. i see how some people see it as not being feminist and not empowering but idk i always did

Exactly! The fairy godmother essentially didn't do anything more than give her an opportunity to 1. See how people outside of that abusive dynamic lived and 2. Connect with people outside and have someone to care for her and help her get out of that environment. Cinderella was brave to break the rules her stepmother set, and to talk to other people, and then again to appear for the prince when he went to the house searching for her. She wasn't meek; as soon as she saw chances of escape she took them

I'm honestly so tired of feminists ignoring the context of this story. Number one her step family have robbed her inheritance and essentially enslaved her into servitude. They also emotionally abuse her and possibly physically abuse her as well. Number two victims of abuse don't just wake up one day and decide to fight back. If humans worked like that abuse would be far less common. Number three where would she go? This story takes place in what the 1830s at the latest? What are her options for employment given her limited education and time period? Servant of some sort (maid, house keeper, cook, nanny, governance) many those require education and references which she won't get. Depending on the time period she might be able to work in a factory (where she'll be treated just as terrible and possible injur herself) or prostitution. That's the reality of her situation. Cinderella is Ultimately a story about bad things happening to a good person and her overcoming them. She does not let the cruelty and injustice she has experciend change her kind soul. She originally wants to go to the ball to have a night off and dance. Not marry a prince. It's her kindness that saves her not a man. Also marriage has historically been one of many ways that woman have protected themselves sorry to break it to you feminists. Overall the story has a great message about being virtuous in the face of adversity and torment a message every little girl (and boy) should know.

I have never agreed with the idea that Cinderella is not the strong, independent princess like some of the others are. I’m so glad most of the comments are defending Cinderella (1950) and understanding why she stayed. The conversation she has with the dog, Bruno shows she’s just grateful to have a roof over her head. Also it’s VERY hard to leave abusive relationships. I also liked that the mice worked so hard to rescue her. It shows the value of making strong connections and helping those in need. She saved and befriended them and they were willing to do the same for her.
Anyway, this video is interesting to me, considering I feel pretty meh about this particular Cinderella. I do think the dress is stunning, but that’s all that stands out to me. It’s not bad, I just don’t have a desire to see it again.
Still, this is a great video and I can appreciate the movie.

I love this movie. I think Cinderella has always been an admirable character, her gentleness and kind heart is just often mistaken for passivity or weakness. Especially in the 2015 version, Ella's kindness IS her strength, and I like that the movie shows it as such. Soft and strong is a tough combination to have, but Ella has it in abundance. :)

Rather than about someone being from a collectivistic or individualistic upbringing, I think it's more about privilege. People who say "Why doesn't she just leave instead of waiting for a man?" are much too privilege to see that it's simply not that easy. Not everyone has a safety net outside of their families, however abusive that family is. What rubs me off the wrong way about these women saying that about Cinderella is it makes me feel that they lack the compassion towards people who are actually inside toxic or abusive relationships. It screams "victim-blaming" to me.

it’s very difficult for me to turn away from my previous belief that cinderella, much like Kiera Knightley said, waited around for a man to save her. Nowadays, it’s come more to my attention that there wasn’t really anything she could do. Women couldn’t really work, except as servants or prostitutes. You couldn’t just marry anybody- marriage was more class based, i think, so marrying up was like unheard of unless you were a man. she had no money, no title, no friends, and no other family. She had no way to make money other than prostitution or servitude, and even those jobs wouldn’t have allowed her to live a fulfilled life because she would still be extremely poor and unhappy. I’m starting to also understand how strong she was in order to continue to be kind and loving when she was never shown any kindness or love from the people she cared for. She wasn’t a pushover, as i thoughtlessly believed, even in the original animation. She stood up to her stepmother and stepsisters on behalf of other people (or to the stepmother’s cat, who was a MENACE, on behalf of the mice etc), she managed to eke a promise out of her stepmother to attend the ball and dared to argue with her when she backed out, and she didn’t want to go to the ball to find a husband, she just wanted a night of fun and laughter and kindness. she was absolutely an icon, and just because she wasn’t physically badass (as mentioned in the beginning of the video) and didn’t have any magic of her own, doesn’t mean she wasn’t very strong and awesome in her own, understated way. It has taken me YEARS to even be able to say these things and i can now say that cinderella is one of my favourite disney princesses (also, A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes is such a good song oh my goodness)

while the original cinderella sequels dive into this a bit, I would love to see a version of cinderella where she has some sort of bond and gets sympathy from the step sisters during the original story. weirdly, the 2021 version touched on this a little bit with her making a few jokes with the step sisters and (less weirdly) the 2015 version hinted at the possibility of the step sisters knowing what they're doing to Ella is wrong in the dress ripping scene (basing this purely on a small acting choice made by Sophie mcshera when she calls the dress a joke) and Ella's pity for them. in a way, the step sisters are victims of lady Tremaine too since they've been taught to be cruel and seeing them break that cycle would so cool and actually original.
I would love to see a version where she starts bonding with one or both of the step sisters and in the end they too break free from the step mother, maybe they even break her out if we stick closely to the traditional telling. I think what would be important in a version like this would be that in the very end, they go their separate ways or the film makes it obvious that everything isn't ok between them. Since while the step sisters siding with Ella at the end is a start, they still took part in her abuse for years and showing that a potential rebuilding of that relationship is going to take time would be a really good thing and is something that media that does those kinds of redemption arcs really well tend to fail at (thinking about how Scorpia from she-ra reboot just immediately forgives catra at the end even though catra treated her horribly)

I'll add this: one reason it's so good is that they really lean into the fairytale of it. It doesn't make fun of the story, and it doesn't seem to think the characters are stupid for behaving the way they do. Everything is magical, from the costumes to the performances to the score, and it's like you're allowed to be truly invested in the magic. One of the things I loathed the most about Beauty and the Beast is that their need to "improve" the story makes you feel stupid for liking the original characters in the first place. Thank god they didn't have Cinderella invent a washing machine in this.

On why she didn’t leave - Cinderella is always depicted as this hopeful and optimistic woman. You could very well reason that she was hoping that her stepmother would one day turn around and love her back. Plus, the stepmother and sister (and the house) were the only things left that would connect her to her parents.

Cinderella, as a story and a character, always gets a bad name. I was lucky enough to have a support system that made it possible for me to leave but it still took me literal years to understand exactly how wrong it was that I was treated the way I was. Criticizing Cinderella as anti-feminist is worse than victim blaming, it's a complete lack of understanding how abuse works.
EDIT: also yes this is the best version of Cinderella and the best live action Disney Princess remake, these are facts.

I hate when Cinderella is seen as weaker or dumber then other princess for not running away because as someone from an abusive household I know it's not that easy, not only did she lack the money to survive on her own she was also isolated and made to believe that's what her life should be like since she was young. When she gets help from the prince and the fairy godmother she's essentially getting a support group, she's shown kindness and given a way of survival outside her abuser's home, this is how plenty of people raised in these environments escape and that's perfectly fine, getting help it's okay and doesn't mean you aren't strong enough, anyone who survived abuse is strong.
The narrative of "she never wanted to leave and only went to the ball for a man" always makes me feel bad too, my mom used to interpret the movie like that but Cinderella didn't go to the ball for the prince, she wanted to have fun, to be allowed to do the same things all the other girls do, to be away from home even if just for a single night, meeting the prince was an accident, a good one but not part of her plan

There are so many things I adore about this movie that you've mentioned and I always wondered why it's not talked about as much as the other Cinderella remakes. The casting, the acting, the costumes, the soundtrack, and the moral of the story (Have courage and be kind) were all fantastic. 💙💙

I don't think it's even the fact that Cinderella may prioritize her family over herself (could be, I'm not sure what was the cultural background of the author) but that it is just hard to endure the process of realising the abuse, contemplating leaving, planning it and finally leaving, especially since she didn't have any resources to organize that until she met the prince.

I only saw it a couple years ago bc of moderngurlz, I am such a Cinderella girl and I just loved it. The costumes were STUNNING. Loved how they brought the butterflies for the transformation, as I was obsessed with her animal friends and dress as a kid. That blue dress was EVERYTHING.

When you talked about how coming from collectivistic society might influence how you view Cinderella , i related to that! , i never saw Cinderella as " a woman waiting for a man " , i saw her as victim mostly (i sure was mad because she didn't stand up for herself at times, but i think it was more of her Father's job to protect her )

In the 1950s Cinderella there was going to be a scene where the prince was hunting a deer, but then it turned out they were friends and he wasn't going to actually kill him. It was storyboarded but not in the final film. Could this have inspired the stag scene in 2015? 🤔

I really enjoyed this video! It was so clear how much you love the film, and I agree that it is Cinderella's BEST dress. It is such a good remake, the characterisations, plot improvements/subtle details and costumes are real standouts here. Glad to see someone championing it. Although my favourite live-action Disney remake has to go to Beauty and the Beast, omg I just adore it.

Yes to everything you said in this video I completely agree. One thing I think that just solidifies why this movie works is that the Cinderella template is simply a good template. There is a reason why it has been done over and over again. And in this case I feel like they did everything right in both staying true to the bones of the story and not gilding the lily but at the same time really enhancing it with the visuals and emotional beats

  • @cj5867

Even tho I'm from a collectivist culture, my reasoning for not being bothered by Cinderella staying put was always more historical and material. At the time the story is set, even if she left she'd have no money or references and would end up as a mistreated servant somewhere else, or worse. By staying at least she can keep her connection to the place she was born and had a happy childhood and to the animals as well. Leaving would also be accepting this is not her house anymore, and I do think she has some sense of ownership over her home.

Everyone is saying she got rescued by the prince when, in fact, she saved herself for a night using her power of kindness, and then the prince came to find her on his own accord.
And still, she couldn’t leave. Trauma does that, traps you in the idea of “Why leave when you’ve gotten used to the horrible place you are right now? Maybe outside of that dark place it’s actually even darker.”

dude, I swear, the comments about Cinderella's dress and her WAIST . . . . . . . to ther parents who posted that wanting to "protect their kids from body problems", that says a lot more about you then those kids who are way more focused on how pretty and magical and fairy-like the dress is and the lessons about beliving in yourself. Good lord, instead of tiny waists, can we please talk more about the actual story? thanks. Apologies for the comments, I'm just a little pissed that that's what some viewers focus on.
Cause, seriously, Cinderella's probably the most iconic and one of my favorites because of how gentle and kind she is towards everyone, which is a form of bravery. And honestly, having courage and being kind is probably more of a badass move then stabbing someone with your shiny metal sword. :3

It is Disney's best live action remake. It's not even a competition. I have re-watched the movie several times. Now is it my favorite adaption of Cinderella? No. That belongs to Roger and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Idk if it is even second because I love Ever After too. All I will say it is top 3 Roger and Hammerstein at number 1, with the placements of 2nd and 3rd TBD.

cinderella and Kit meeting before the ball was already done by some cinderella series and the reason she went other that to dance was to meet her friend there. so this gave more dept and meaning to their relationship. also the waist problem people talks about, corset was the undergarment of the old era, the bra or the modern day. when worn properly its job is to support the bosom. and the waist looking smaller is an optical illusion, the shape of the dress and how big and wide it is makes her waist smaller.

I come from background that's a blend of both collectivist and individualistic. (Mixed race, but born and raised in Canada). It still makes sense to me as to why she stayed. People have to remember the Disney version takes place in 19th century France. Cinderella, and other women in a similar situation, didn't have many options. Safe houses didn't exist back then. Cinderella didn't have the resources to take the plunge out of the home until she met the prince. The only real options for her were to: become a hermit or join a convent. Both aren't very good. Hell, even now it's hard for anyone to get out of those situations. Criticizing Cinderella as anti-feminist is not only victim blaming, it shows that the person has no understanding of how abuse situations actually work.

It's so frustrating when people say "why didn't she just save herself", when it's completely valid to suffer a terrible situation if it means keeping a roof over your head. Ella is just a teenage girl with no family or support system. There's no place she could go and Lady Tremaine made sure she knew it. Even more so, Ella herself expresses to her friends (one of the dismissed housemaids prior to Tremaine firing them) that she's willfully choosing to remain in the house because her parents loved it. It's the one remaining thing from her golden childhood, so she tends to it in place of her parents. The Prince was one of the extremely few people who could see past her visage as a parentless servant girl and, not only recognize her value, but have the means to get her out of it.
