Portugal and Spain agreed to split up the known world in 1494. Also why Brazil speaks Portuguese rather than Spanish.
I didn’t put those 2 very obvious points together 🫣
That was by decree of the Pope in the Treaty of Sargasso which divided the world in half. Half Spanish and half Portuguese. Since nearly all the Cristian world was Catholic, this was accepted by most of the western world.
Also, the reason there were Portuguese colonies in Africa and India, but no Spanish colonies in those areas.
@@CapnDan57 Africa, India and China were in the Portuguese half (which is why they speak Portuguese in Macao China) and the Philippines, and the American continents were in the Spanish half.
The Treaty of Tordesillas of 1494 divided the Spanish and Portuguese spheres. Pope Alexander VI made the division in the early 1500s. r@@gregmiller-qq5on
I cannot encourage people enough to take a continuing education class about the area in which you live. My husband & I took a "History of (my area)" at the local college. Learned all about migration, then focused on the native trails in my area, which are now interstates. My area was heavily impacted by the Civil War in 1861-1865, so it was also shown to us where troops stayed, where battles happened, the old roads that used to be important but are now grown over, and so much more. Been here 30 years and had no idea.
Please react to Schoolhouse Rock! A standard during Saturday morning cartoons in the 70s-80s. Short "commercial" clips about math, social studies/government, and grammar. "Conjunction Junction, what's your function?" is one of the best. But you might want to look at the US government ones. I still have the Preamble to the Constitution memorized because of Schoolhouse Rock.
Loved School House Rock. Conjunction Junction.
Not to sound silly but School House Rock, ROCKS. I liked the one about 'BILL'. I'M just a bill, about how laws happen.
When we had a two week assignment to memorize the preamble in 8th grade many of us got an easy A because we had already had the song memorized for years.
@@dondebomm6329 Exactly! There was one poor (not literally) student whose parents wouldn't let them watch cartoons for some reason, so they never saw Schoolhouse Rock. They were the only one to struggle with that assignment.
The Louisiana Purchase is the largest real estate deal ever; based on amount of land sold.
Seward's Folly was a fairly good deal too....and threatened in the news lately.
Napolean was in a bind and needed money and allies, he hoped he would get both.
It was also done to prevent a possible future war with France. The US had gotten Florida from Spain, but the Spanish considered everything up too New Orleans to be part of Florida. Sorry Mississippi and Alabama, no beachfront property for you. But they never really pushed it because they were so busy in South America.
Georgia also didn't have an official recognized western boundary. They could include everything until they hit the Pacific. Or French and Spanish colonies in the way.
Though not legal, the people in Washington knew settlers would keep expanding west regardless of borders, so buying all of the Louisiana Territory was accepting the inevitable without having to fight for it. It also gave America some control over the people that moved there.
Try Alaska
The History Guy covers little known but important things in history that we’ve forgotten.
I like his channel
Every wave of American expansion west beginning in the 18th Century had Irish and Scottish at the forefront because they were poor enough to be desperate, tough enough to survive harsh conditions, and eagar for opportunities to have land of their own. The very things that brought them across the ocean also drove them west.
Not the Irish, the expansion west was led by the English, Scottish and Scots-Irish (who themselves are descendants of Scottish and English settlers).
During WWII, both Portugal and Ireland, being Neutral, were hotbeds of espionage and intrigue.
Spain too.
Spies with electric blankets...
🕵🏻♂️
Especially since Brazilians speak Portuguese 😊 I do miss your videos with Elen.
Me too! Oh yeah 😂durrr
@@DianeJenningsIn 1494, Portugal signed a treaty with the Kingdom of Castile (along w Aragon, most of what would become Spain) to divide the non-European world between them. This Treaty of Tordesillas gave everything east of a line to Portugal and everything west to Spain. That’s why Cape Verde, the Azores, parts of Africa, Macao - and of course, Brazil - were colonized by Portugal, but the rest of South America and most of the Caribbean were colonized by Spain. And why Brazil is the one that speaks Portuguese whereas the rest of Latin America speaks Spanish.
Yay. Another educational video. I would to see a comparison of USA and Ireland history comparison.
The first 95% of the video would be all Ireland 🇮🇪
@@chipparmleyand then Ireland would be like 1% 😂
I value my thumbs the most. Without thumbs, it's hard to hold anything.
This video gave a view from 10,000 feet. That is, only the biggest events, without much detail.
Portuguese is still the official language of Brazil. It was Portugal's biggest colony.
Lincoln didn't call for the complete banning of slavery until the Civil War was well along. His position when running for president was to stop the expansion of slavery, not to ban it where it already existed. He believed that, over time, slavery would die off if it weren't allowed in the newer parts of the country.
The greatest contribution of the U.S. in World War II was materiel: weapons, ships, planes, transport vehicles, and the like. The U.S. was across two oceans from the main Axis powers, so was protected from bombing. This made it possible to keep supplying materiel while the factories of Germany and Japan were being damaged and destroyed.
The modern Civil Rights Movement started in the fifties, not the sixties. Some important events included the Supreme Court decision to require integration of public schools in 1954 and the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 and 1956.
One thing to keep in mind regarding all the trading of and fighting over land is that there were people living there before the Europeans came in. The Louisiana Purchase did not have the approval or sanction of the Indians who were there first.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition, which happened after the Louisiana Purchase, is a fascinating story. They led a team of explorers to find a navigable route to Oregon through the newly-purchased land. There were no maps and no roads, and they had no idea what they would encounter along the way. There are some pretty good documentaries on UA-cam about it.
We need you to make a video about “the history of Chewie”. Cute pupper.
Omg I would never stop talking
@@DianeJennings isn't that why we're here, Irish Girl....???????
You should definitely check out a video on the Barbary Pirates.
And you can also delve way deeper into the part about Texas joining the union. There are different versions of what happened. Texans per-se, who were Mexican citizens, wanted independence from Mexico, but needed more population. They invited "Americans" to move there, but the U.S. government had other ideas and rather than grant Texas it's independence, they just took it. And yes, I am being very brief as to all the political details.
Fort Sumter in Charleston South Carolina can be visited and with all the fighting that happened during the first battle of the Civil War, no one died, though after there was a explosion that was so strong it bent the bricks of fort
And, as you are watching and learning about the purchase of land from the French, war and general hatred between Spain and Britain, please remember that there were a lot of indigenous people already living there caught in the middle of all this.
2:56 there’s quite a bit of “history”that was taught early in schools. That history teachers later point out is more like “American Mythology”- which is interesting that we have such a thing in a nation as young as ours
Mythology needs nothing more than people seeking simple explanations.
I live in Alexandria Virginia which is right outside of Washington DC so I am surrounded by 200 years of history. It's fun to watch these videos because when you live smack dab in the middle of it you forget the historical importance of your surroundings.
200 years huh? That’s a sneeze in China, Japan, Europe, Middle East…..
yea, well I don't like in China, Japan, Europe or the Middle East so what's your point?@@mrmott44
Thanks for making the start of the week Very Happy and Joyful.
12:07 “refresher coarse” describes it accurately, doesn’t get bogged in details
Today is Oatmeal Monday. Oatmeal with some cinnamon, sugar, and strawberries is a good way to enjoy the day.
Ok Sheldon
I liked the video. One thing he started to cover then dropped was immigration into the continental US.
But in 10 minutes that might deserve to be its own video. Hope you get to Chicago soon!
Happy Monday Diane! I have always been a big fan of history. I personally think that a lot could people who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Thanks for sharing this video Diane.Hope that you have a great week. Be well Diane! 👋😎🎉🎊❤️🙏
In the part of the northeastern United States where I'm from, Columbus Day is becoming more known as Indigenous Peoples Day along with Italian-American Heritage Month
Very interesting video Diane, great job!
Have a safe and enjoyable visit to the states
Thank you! Will do!
Interestingly enough the Nation's Capitol still has "Taxation without Representation" in that they have a single representative in the House of Representatives, but that rep has no vote in the chamber. So, while they can introduce legislation, and lobby other representatives on behalf of the citizens of Washington, DC, but can't vote on that legislation or any other bill. So, DC residents pay taxes to the federal government without full representation.
When DC was originally formed, they never intended there to be permanent residents there.
Thanks Diane! I value all my fingers, although, being left-handed, I really need my left fingers (otherwise I would be truly doomed). A bit of a refresher video for me as well, I took an American History course in high school.
A refresher!! Exactly
In 1496 a line was drawn by papal decree at 46° west longitude, giving lands to the east to Portugal (Brazil) and lands west to Castile. A good deal for Spain.
You make learning Fun, Happy and Joyful. I enjoying hearing you thoughts on the learning journey.
So happy you made it to Chicago. Have a fun and productive visit.
I wonder if there will be anything I didn't know about in the video. Although I specialized in military history, I have a fair grasp of US general history as well. After watching it, the video seems a fairly basic summary of US history, The phrasing in some parts seemed a little weird, which makes me wonder if it was written by AI.
You’re the second person to suggest that!! Maybeeee 😮
Both Hands are the most valuable things that Humans have. With hands everything is built plus being able to edit video, operate equipment, cook, play music, draw, write.
For a suggestion from comments -- I'm still hoping to see you watch Geography Now's episode covering Ireland :D
I would be interested in a similar video on the history of Ireland with your point of view for added seasoning, lol. 😄
Happy Monday!! I really enjoy this video. Have a great week.
Thank you! You too!
It would help if every American history class woul start with this. Then as you hit the particulars play it again so the students could see where everything fits in the big old scheme of things. Overviews are a nice way to see the forest for the trees. Great video to react to. Thanks
That’s a good idea. Just a small overview
7:42 I have an ancestor that worked directly under George during the Revolution
Imagine if Chewie had hands He would be at the refrigerator all the time eating snacks and calling delivery to get more snacks.
Omg he would be in BIG trouble
@@DianeJennings Right He would order a truckload of Snacks and give You the Puppy Dog Eyes
Ngl, I would love to see an “Editor Diane reacts to Super Bowl commercials” video…maybe next year 🤞🏻 🙂
Maybe!
Have you've heard of malasada? It's a portuguese donuts deep fried and can be caked with sugar with fillings inside or nothing. The fillings are a little too sweet for me so I usually get onese with nothing occasionally. I just like the crunch and the soft center as I chew it. I'm not into sweets but sometimes I get some and it takes me a month to eat it all.
Just before Columbus reached the West Indies in 1492, it is easily missed that Bartholomew Dias sailed eastward and landed on South Africa's south coast near to today's Mossel Bay, in 1488: four years earlier.
I'm from South Africa, and so this, local history was taught me in grade 4 and on. America has its own, dramatic history with European & British interest, and South Africa's colony was founded in 1652, starting our modern history.
Fascinating histories, and no debts owed to the past anymore, either. We are looking forwards.
Happy Monday Diane! I favor my left 1st finger and thumb, because I'm left handed. And I once got stuck in an elevator...
Now I take steps to avoid them. Boop!
I live very close to Jamestown,Virginia and myself is of the Patawomeck Indian tribe.I have the blood of the conquered and the conqueror.
You're irish though, how are you a conqueror?
Also, right hand, index finger is my favorite.
I use every one of my fingers and both thumbs on some of the songs I play on guitar. I don't have a favorite, even my left thumb gets used to grab bass notes over the top of the neck in many songs! 😊
You are correct, the last decade there have been so many lies about what Columbus did and how. What happened to the Native Americans is what happen everywhere in the world where Renaissance Man encounters Stone Age Man.
Diane, as you may remember via the movie "Last of the Mohicans", the French and Indian war was around 1755.
I didn't bother to verify it, but I've always heard Al Qaida pronounced al KYE-duh, rather than al KAY-duh.
After they dumped all the tea in the harbor they built the first Dunkin'' Donuts.
Thanks for reacting to it Diane!
No problem 😊
My family came here from Ireland as we changed the name from O'Bryan to Bryan once settling in Virginia. I'm very proud to be an American and some family members of mine have fought and died for this country, so I'm incredibly grateful for the freedoms we have here, but i also want to see Ireland where my ancestors came from. It is on my bucket list to see one day!!! Great video reaction, and thanks so much for sharing!!
There was a vertical line through South America. Spain had the area West of the Line and Portugal had the area East of the line. Thus Brazil is east of the line so that is why they speak Portuguez.
True, but doesn't explain Surinam, Guyana, French Guyana
My parents fought during the Cold War I’ve heard, Mom always wanted it warmer in the house and Dad would never let her touch the thermostat.
😂😂😂
Love your videos
The little finger on my left hand is the most valuable. I was a violinist, but injured that finger playing basketball. It recovered, but the tendon reattached incorrectly and I can't straighten it out any more. Fortunately, it still works for playing the violin.
I wish my American History classes in school went this fast. The video goes through 10 seconds what my American History classes would spend 4 weeks on.
Well, a very brief overview of how the Americas developed into what they are now. Learning and refreshing knowledge with Miss Diane. Almost always a good thing.
Almost always 😜
They didn't mention the Mexican-American War or the Patricios, Irish Americans that fought on the Mexican side.
Left out of the map during the civil war was that Arizona territory was part of the Confederacy. There was and entirely forgotten civil war fought in the west.
Woo hoo another educational video. I love US history. Oh and I favor my right hand.
Wooohooooo 🎉
My Ancestors came to Jamestown in 1634.
I am decended of a Black Slave and an Irish Indentured Servant.
They has the first Mixed race(Black and White)child born in America. 2 Generations later they were kicked out of Jamestown and the entire family sailed to Charleston SC in 1723.
We've been here ever since.
There were no Irish in Jamestown.
It would be interesting to know what Dianne’s Irish schools taught about American history.
So many Irish immigrants left for America during bad times in Ireland.
I lived through the cold war era.Alway feared nuclear attack from Russia. Was especially concerned since I lived close to Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro North Carolina. The 68th bomb wing had B52 Bombers on alert loaded with nuclear weapons. The USAF had loaded bombers flying around the clock in the air near Europe. I recall reading in a book that the United States had around 15000 nuclear weapons for around 5000 targets. The bombers at Seymour Johnson carried 2 thermonuclear bombs twice the power of the ones used on Japan
Yhea, they 'look at' Christopher Columbus differently because the media they watch have told them to.
Great Video 🎉
My great grandfather was an 8' tall Cherokee on my mother's side.
My father's side came over in the early 1630's through Jamestown. In the James River today you can Google Hatcher Island.
I'm not so proud that my father's side being British they brought with them their servants. Many thanks to Harry's Royal family.
After the revolutionary war things became different.
My family bought jackasses because they were cheaper to house.
Now we are up to date on my side.
What are the beginnings of other Americans families❓
I appreciate you videos and the knowledge that they give US.
Thanks and hope that you have a nice day.
I always thought we should celebrate Lief Eriksen Day instead of Columbus Day.
Also some evidence the Irish came here even before the Norsemen
Technically zheng he was the first to discover America nearly 1600 years ago. He landed on the west coast approximately where san diego is.
@@carlosspeicywiener7018 Yes there is also some evidence of that however the Norse settled and the Chinese and Irish didnt
Why would we celebrate either of those people? There were people already living in both North and South America when both Erikson and Columbus arrived.
@@carlosspeicywiener7018 You can't be the first to discover a place when people already live there.
That would be like me walking up to your front door and claiming I discovered your home.
I think the history of the world and mankind is about who can control what territory. It can be boiled down to what family/clan/tribe/empire/nation can take the land and then keep it. That is why war is always with us.
It's good to see a video that acknowledges that slavery existed outside of the United States. Nine out of ten videos that discuss slavery give the impression that slavery was exclusively an American thing when many European countries held slaves.
I play the trumpet so I'll my most important fingers are the forefinger, middle finger, and ring finger of my right hand. I'd had to relearn to play if I didn't have those.
Diane the u tube photo. Your baby blues are popping out of your head. Had to watch this one
My thumbs don't like to be called fingers, in fact they are quite opposed to it. I have tried to explain that is not what is meant by opposable thumbs. I don't think that they were listening in school whilst my brain head box was being educated. They are very cooperative and love to assist in writing things down, but they consider themselves to be in semi-retirement due to the prevalence of typing. I tried to teach them texting, to no avail, they ganged up with my fingers to present me a paper on RSI and said I would be hearing from their solicitor as that was not in their job description. Now they are on a "work to rule", I am all fingers and thumbs. Could you ask Chewie how he deals with obstreperous thumbs? I suspect he will tell you he made them redundant and declared them vestigial dew claws.
It is somewhat more likely that Native Americans crossed from Asia by following the coastal route. Both North and South America were settled in fairly short order, not consistent with an entirely land travel method.
Interesting 😊
@@DianeJenningsSome archaeological sites in Chile as nearly as old as anything in North America.
OH!! Diane has all sorts of sparkleys on her mic & boom.
He forgot to mention president Thomas Jefferson in 1804 commissioned Lewis and Clark to explore the Northwest territories ( Oregon Territory )
and claim it for the United States. There were the British, Russians and Spanish trying to claim rights to the Northwest Territories at that time.
Try listening to the Band Heart
Research Fort Sumter, and the Battle of the Alamo. Very intriguing.
Fun history video.
They also didn't mention the Oregon Concession and the Pig War.
Yay! I love to,learn stuff.
Spain gave freebies to Portugal.
Portugal in real terms couldn't colonize a ice cream truck.......
I have a Huge Columbus statue in my town. We still celebrate every year. God Bless him🙏
Problem with Census data on ethnicity is that it is self-reported so mixed race people may or may not report their full ethnicity. Thus your question about whether the percentage includes mixed races is “maybe”.
Hey Diane, Happy Monday, Monday is the best day, especially when it’s a holiday. It’s Presidents’ Day here.
I had a pun about the wind, but it blows
😂😂😂 good one 💨
Presidents Day is next week.
Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson is working on figuring out the history of the 1st Nation/Native American peoples. I find it pretty interesting.
That sounds cool!!
Diane, look into the Irish in Portugal and Northern Spain. It might Explain why I have Irish DNA. It's a small world 😊
My middle right finger is the best, because it is sooo expressive! Its also good for stirring the tea. ☕☕☕
So good!
This definitely is a “refresher”, but it is omitting or just gets wrong some things that it says or should have said. One example: Lincoln didn’t support ending slavery right when he entered office in 1861. He came to it gradually over the next 18 months, not making it happen until rumors of Britain & France intervening on behalf of the South/Confederacy. He knew they wouldn’t dare oppose the U. S. if we made the war about ending slavery as it would hurt their own reputations and be seen as hypocrites.
And thus, at some point, my poor farmer Scots-Irish ancestors immigrated to the hills and mountains of southern Appalachia, and here I am today. Lol
8:54 REMEMBER THE ALAMO!
In America, some have started celebrating friends giving, or Indigenous Peoples Day.
all of my fingers gonna keep them if I can. ne of the beautiful qualities of the native Americans they never thought they owned the land we merely borrowing it for a short period of time that is why they cared for the lands and waters. always good to review older history from time to time.
Christopher Columbus is cool for discovering America for the Queen.
😂 so cool!
@@DianeJennings 😂 The coolest Long Live the Queen
Happy Monday Diane. There is also evidence that Europeans/Caucasians arrived in the Americas, even before the Vikings. There are mummies from ancient Peru that have been found with European/Caucasian type hair.
Much more interesting than my old history classes

10,000 years in 10 minutes. Not bad for an overview. Thanks Diane BOOP
Boop!
Straight up, legit!
I value all of my digits. They come in quite handy. 😉
In the American Civil War, the video mistakenly calls the states which seceded "the confederation," but that is something different. They were called "the confederacy."
I’m glad you found Knowledgia, be prepared to go down a big rabbit hole of history watching those videos. Also I don’t consider the thumb to be a finger because Dr. Hibbert from The Simpsons said it isn’t one.
Then it must be true!!
....and then in 1847...SOOOOOOO many Irish!! 😀😀☘☘🍻🍻
Some think the Irish found America before Columbus. St. Brendan supposedly sailed across the North Atlantic in a small boat.
Certainly the Norse and the Basque did.
How about a reaction to Terry Fox, and The Marathon Of Hope?❤
