Lyrics of "The Energy Blues";
Energy . . .
Sometimes I think I'm running out of energy
Seems like we use an awful lot for
Heating and lighting and driving
Reading and writing and jiving
Energy . . .
You'd think we'd be saving it up
Energy . . .
You can get it by damming up a river
Energy . . .
A windmill can make the breeze deliver
But even with milling and damming
Our needs are so much more demanding
For energy . . .
We have to use some kind of fuel
Chop, chop, chop, the cavemen used wood to start their fires
Chop, chop, chop, they made all the tools that they required
Chop, chop, chop, inventions got more and more inspired
The fires got higher and higher
And clearings got wider and wider
Energy . . .
They were burning about all their wood up
Then one day men discovered that coal would do it better
Miners dug, and it looked like it might just last forever
It seemed like the final solution
It started the Industrial Revolution
Energy . . .
We could just keep on digging it up
Now in 1859 - way out in western Pennsylvania
A man had built a rig that got some laughs from folks who came there
But suddenly, a mighty roar came up from under the ground
And soon a gusher, gushing oil, soaked all who stood around
Now no-one knew, when that gusher blew
The petroleum years were on us
Or that so many cars and trucks would come to cause a crisis
Energy . . .
We're looking to try and find some new kinds
Energy . . .
Exploring to try and make a new find
Nuclear and thermal and solar
If we miss we'll get colder and colder
Energy . . .
We've got to stop using you up
So don't be cross when momma says turn that extra light out
Just turn it off till we find us a fuel that never runs out
If everyone tries a bit harder
Our fuel will go farther and farther
Energy . . .
We're going to be stretching you out
Stuff like this is why I turn the lights off when I leave the room.
Singer, Jack Sheldon did my favorite schoolhouse Rock episodes: "Conjunction Junction", "I'm Just a Bill.", and, "The Energy Blues." I just love that raspy, jazzy voice of his. His voice is so soulful that I thought that he was Black. Sad to say, he passed away in 2019, but he lived a ripe old age of 88. I took heed to this episode at the age of thirteen, in 1979. I only have electcal devices on when I'm using them, I don't waste paper, and I recycle, and I always find a way to make something last longer.
@Good Time Editing Oh, yeah! He sure did! I love that one too. "Saying all those words over, and, over again really wear you down."
@Good Time Editing 4 Real! As well Them Not-so-dry Bones and Where the Money Goes
I first thought he sang The Check’s in the Mail
You commented 4 years ago then recently.
THAT'S what i call a Return of the king moment.
@@Solongsocialmedia where was the past comment?

That would be brilliant

Had this song in my head so I watch this, classic!
I feel sorry for the people on the planet when the
Earth decides to stretch itself by equator & poles!
🌍🌎🌏
my favorite part of this song is the "Chop Chop Chop TIMBER!!!" Parts.
Can't believe we still have trees and there's no shortage.
Having grown up with songs like this, I took it to heart to use only one light at a time when I moved into my own place several years ago. I try to remain conscious about how much electricity and energy I’m using, including not leaving wires plugged into sockets when I’m not using those devices. It’s not enough to save the planet, but I don’t want to be a wasteful person if I can help it, you know?
Same here. And I don't flick lights off and on. My dad said the energy company charges extra for that.
God, Lord. That was over 40yrs. ago, with a world whose population has doubled sense then. SCARY!🌎
I’ve learnt history often repeats itself
@@pryxed7972 So true. Today is deja vu. Do you remember the energy crises of the '70s? There was a gasoline shortage, and the cost of gasoline spiked. The Big Three started designing cars to travel at a slower rate of speed, and the speed limit was reduced to 55 mph, and cities kept having electrical blowouts around the country every day because we didn't have enough power grids.

We got this message through song by way of a children's program. It's 2022 and look at the world in crisis for not taking heed to the message. Wow! 😔
And we still have huge amounts of oil we can get from our own country…we ain’t running out we are being played…wake up!
Yep. We saw it coming 50 years ago and we've done nothing about it. Scientists say we have about 25 years to go before the problems become irreversible and will lead to mankind's demise. 🌍
I’m 53 now and hadn’t heard this since maybe 1977 and still remember all the words. Good stuff
Honestly surprised to hear this children's program mention nuclear as a viable option all the way back then considering all the negative press pushed about it the past few decades.
This song first aired via the ABC network on March 27th, 1979 - and the unfortunate timing of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident was 4:00 AM the *_VERY next day_* if you can believe it!
The following disasters of Chernobyl in Pripyat, USSR-controlled Ukraine in 1986 and the Fukushima Daiichi of Fukushima, Japan in 2011 were just further logs on the anti-nuclear power fire.
@@PeachLover94 3 accidents. Three Mile Island had no casualties of any kind, Chernobyl was the result of poor training and atrocious build quality, and Fukushima was...well ok. Who tf builds a POWER PLANT of any kind on the Pacific coast of Japan ON the ring of fire? Earthquake and tsunami heaven.
I'm not gonna get too into it, but my point is that the disasters that HAVE occured were due to human error. And they actually occur at such a reduced rate compared to other forms of energy, it's insane. If someone claims to be an environmentalist, my first question to them is "do you support nuclear power". And if they say "no. Nuclear bad", then I know that they have done zero research. Weeds out the frauds real quick. Until we discover fusion, nuclear is our most viable option for power-grid, railway, and ocean vessel.
Thank you for informing me about the weird coincidence.
@@MrJr1976 what about those who were experiments to radiation poisoning by china
Couldn't wait for Saturday's to watch schoolhouse rock as a kid..RIP Mr. Sheldon
People thought oil was foolish, now people think non-oil is foolish
I think we're just more foolish now
Relevant then, relevant now.
I miss this fr fr! 💯
My grandpa would show me schoolhouse rock it reminds me of him❤
0:02 0:08 This part goes out to people who grew up on Schoolhouse Rock like I did and feel young when you watch it but feel old when you realize how long it's been and you run out of energy
Never too old to Rock these...these kids need to pit down the phones and look at these
But I'm watching it on a phone
Favorite part @2:20. "if we miss we'll get colder and colder.".
Of course the science was settled and if we didn't properly cut back on energy use we would be into a Global Cooling.
That is a performance by Jack Sheldon that even I didn’t understand. ENERGY BLUES. Even with all the conservation we’re doing to save energy…we’re still not doing enough.
Kenneth Huang 2/1/23.
I love this one. Watched schoolhouse rock in 80's alot
I was watching this one in the '70s. Memories.

And that was the message from old man Earth.
If only we had a superhero who could spin the generator real fast... wait wrong song
Seems they should've played this a lot more! This is one of the ones I would've never remembered till I ran across it
1:46 More specifically Titusville which is just south of Erie.
Still very relevant and even more pressing today
Or it's the boy who cried wolf, just the wolf never shows up.
Number 40, Energy Blues.
This was my favourite song as a kid.
the oil gusher eruption was intense and the gas station was crazy
As a kid, I just got scared of the last shot. Now I just think it's really funny.
"AaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--"
Great Job!
Growing up in the 70's, of course all of these embedded themselves deep in my brain matter, never to be extracted. But as a kid on Saturday morning watching cartoons with breakfast, some of them are so downbeat and depressing to listen to, I always hated when they came on. Energy Blues, Mother Necessity, Great American Melting Pot, Figure Eight, Naughty Number Nine. As a child, they were real drags on the manic momentum Bugs Bunny had built up during the morning.

This idea of everyone doing their part for energy conservation is practically nonexistant in the media today.
He warns about global cooling in this song. Capitol Bill, that is not right.
ahead of its time
Solar energy….. that’s Vitamin D, right? The best part.😅
Yeah, I go sleeveless some days just to soak up some vitamin d. It's heathier for me than going dairy.🐮"moo!"
It’s crazy cuz I got flashbacks of that earth character
*(NUMBER 40):* Number 40. "Energy Blues…"
1979
the earth is probably coughing to death now
To be fair, pollution nowadays has gone a bit down since this episode was released. Still not good, but better than it was back then. It's just that it seems worse, now that much more people actually care enough to take action.

Must save the Earth.
Wow. And guess who's to blame for the BS?!!!!
The wealthy. An older man laughed and told me he didn't give a "boop" because he wouldn't be here to see it when the earth crumbles, and that's the way corporate America, the rich and elite, and our political leaders see it. They literally don't care.
