  • Here are my tips on how to keep chickens happy when you get them as babies.
    Get the thermometer here: beckyshomestead.com/favorites
    The link to the how to make a nest box video is here: • Easy to Make Nesting B...
    Don’t add them in with grown up chickens, that will definitely make them not happy.
    Keep them warm.
    For the first week you have to keep them at 100 degrees on one side of their box. The other side of their box is the cool zone. They eat in the cool zone and sleep in the warm zone. It’s important to make sure the whole box is not one temperature, they need to be able to get away from the heat on one side of the box.
    Then you drop the temp 5 degrees each week. So on the 2nd week it is 95 degrees on the warm side.
    I use this temp controller to keep the babies nice and toasty warm but not too hot, so they keep growing healthy.
    Keep them fed.
    I feed my baby chickens standard non medicated chick starter. I take the lid off the coffee can and use it as a food bowl.
    And I use the lid of the spice jar as a water bowl. Because if you put too much water in there they spill it and get water everywhere and make a big mess.
    I put the little water bowl on the food bowl so even if they spill the water and the food gets wet, they’ll still eat the food.
    Using the little food and water bowls means you’ll have to attend to the baby chicks at lest twice a day.
    Be patient.
    Just leave them alone and let them grow, you don’t have to do anything.
    Stress makes chickens sick and brings them down. You need to keep them in a quite area. They can take handling and holding, but then you put them back in their quite area. No animal likes noise and stress. So don’t keep them in the kids playroom.
    People do too much stuff, leave them alone and let them grow.
    Use the tub they grew up in as the nest box when the time comes, it’s such a good re-use.

    We have some baby chicks at home at the moment. They are in a little box and the dogs come to see them all the time, we talk to them and we pick them up too. We've raised 4 flocks in this way and we have the most friendly and relaxed chickens I've ever seen!

    One very interesting fact is that all species of chickens do not lay eggs at the same rate so I figured that maybe your readers might want to know what I have found out. The hens that are daily egg layers are fine but most of these species will rapidly slow down in their laying within about 3 to 4 years where as the Americauna or easter egger which lays beautiful light green to blue eggs will usually lay eggs for up to 5 years or more, I have a 7 year old americauna that still lays eggs. The hens that lay one egg every few days will produce eggs for more years compared to hen species which lay daily so if you are the kind of person that likes keeping chickens as pets but also for egg laying then it is a good idea to get the ones that will produce over a longer period. My favorite is of course the Americauna and also the Silver Laced Wyandotte which has a great disposition and personality. Also I would recommend to place your baby chick starter box close to a wall or somwhere that the metal hanging hook can be firmly attached to something sturdy and do not rely on the flimsy little clamp which is supplied with these light reflectors. I do use the clamp but also attach the metal hanging loop by either a piece of bailing wire or maybe a piece of bent metal coat hanger just to be 100% certain that the light fixture cannot come undone and fall into the brood container since it would not only become an instant fire hazard but also could wipe out your baby hens. I say this because many people lead busy lives and are not there all of the time to keep an eye on things and if one needs to go out away from home during the day or night it is common sense to make sure that the set up is absolutely as safe as possible. I only add my comments on here because I have been keeping chickens for over 15 years and have learned quite a lot about keeping hens and about the different breeds available. Hope this info is accepted with an open mind and not taken as me trying to step on anybody's feet especially Becky's. Her videos are great and show a lot of valuable info with room to grow as far as more details about raising chickens. Thank's. My next comments will be about some of the different species and how they get along with each other like who's the bully on the block and who has the softest temperament in the chicken family of birds.

    I breed chickens and ducks. I follow this method, but because I'm often raising chicks and ducklings together I feed them a non-medicated flock raiser instead of chick feed, and depending on their age I also add fresh fruits/veggies and greens, mealworms, etc. I also use larger feeders/waterers. I start my babies out on an approx. 1lb feeder and 1 gallon waterer, and I use a reptile water dish made for tortoises that has a gradual incline down into a deeper water area for ducklings to swim in once they're about a week or older. Clean unused paint roller trays also work well. I use a Rubbermaid Roughneck Tote with hardware cloth over the lid, it was $12 at my local hardware store and is 4x2x2' approx. By the time my birds are too big for that brooder, if the weather outside is good I put them out in a little pen that is separate from my hens and roosters. I'll start gradually introducing them to the flock by letting them out to mingle when I'm there to supervise them, and then once they're big enough I integrate then fully. I typically have to spend a few weeks still catching them and putting them in the coop until they realize that's where they sleep at night, but once it "clicks" that's it! :)

    I enjoy your videos. Always helpful advice. I shoot for 95 degrees the first week but as long as they can move away from excessive heat all is good. If you have room an appliance box(washer, dryer, refrigerator) works well for larger numbers and you just get rid of or repurpose when done. How about a video about raising them to adulthood after the first few weeks and introducing them to your existing flock when time.

    • @crazy808ish
      @crazy808ish 8 років тому +1

      I shoot for 95 too, and quickly decrease. It's better for them to be cooler than too warm. I don't get why some people go all the way up to 100F. They're not in the egg anymore, and at that age, they would be starting to peek out of the hen's feathers into the normal non-heated environment. At three days, the momma would be taking them out for food, and guess what? She won't be waiting for the nearest 95* day.

    • @rc3291
      @rc3291 8 років тому +1

      Having the warm area for them if they get chilled is necessary. My brooder is actually outside and all sides are covered in hardware cloth except one corner. I keep one area large enough for the chicks to warm up in and the rest is ambient temperature. Giving them ample room to regulate their own comfort level is the key. Granted it was 80 degrees in the day here this March only dropping into the mid 60's at night. By the third week they only slept 2 feet from the light.

    • @crazy808ish
      @crazy808ish 8 років тому +1

      rc3291 Yeah, of course, having a warm area is necessary. I just think some people go too far. Especially in that small box. The cooler side probably isn't even cooler by that much. It's better to have a larger option for them if they want. This goes 10x more for ducklings.

    Hi Becky. I know this video is old but I'm coming down the homestretch for getting my coop completed so I'll be ordering my chicks soon. Do you have a link for the bulb that you are using for the tub in this video? If it needs to be a link that helps you out too, I'd be glad to purchase from that one. I'm going to buy 8-10 Rhode Island Red girls and will be setting up a brooder the way you show us in this video.

I have got some chicken which i bought from the shop. i dont know their age but they look like one month old approx. so lately i saw one of the chicken showing some weakness as i see the baby snoozing most of the time and opening his beak often as if he is burping or choking . i ignored and thought it would be fine. but after 3 days i have seen the same symptoms in the other one . I am afraid if its some sort of disease and its spreading to my healthy chickens . please help. I stay in Dubai and the temperature is now around 38 degrees Celsius . I make sure they get enough food and water.

Do u ever keep any? how long do they take to crow (mine are going on 6 months and have yet to crow)? are they even roosters? have u made any videos on hatching ur own baby chicks? is it better to use an incubator or let the broody hen do the work?

      Tessala Glenn both ways of hatching work. Cockerels can start crowing as early as three weeks old, yours are either slow to mature or pullets.

      I would say let the chicken nurse the chicks.

      HitPoints 360 that’s all well and good, but something could happen to the hen or she may stop brooding. Also, some breeds never, if ever, brood, so it’s necessary to brood them yourself.

    Hi Becky, I have a couple questions. We had 3 eggs, 2 of them hatched 3 days ago. They kept pecking each other, so we tried to separate them because they the second born started to get wounds on its feet, is this normal? If not, how do we prevent this?
    Unfortunately the first born died yesterday so we only have one left. Will the single chick be OK or should we consider getting more chicks to keep it company? We have 3 full grown chickens out in the coop atm (used to have 5, but a dog killed 2 of them last week). So we've had to deal with a lot of death in the past couple weeks and I really want to make sure my baby survives. Hope you can help me out, thanks.

      It is likely too late but for future reference you need a red light to prevent pecking and injury. If you have a dog killing small animals then it's time for that dog to go!! That is money down the drain!! Dogs should protect not kill. Never mix babies with adults, make sure they are the same size.

      Kimberly B, Train your dog or keep it separated. A dog is, or should be, family and you don't get rid of family. If your dog is not family, then maybe it is better off with someone else.

    I have 5 chicks a week old in a 50 gallon tote probably twice as big as the one shown with the large 250 watt bulb. I came home today to find the bulb turned off and the tote covered with a sheet because someone thought they could fly out...

    Hello, yesterday I just got four little baby hens from Prats pets and we are keeping Them in a fist tank that is a bit bigger than the bin you have so should i Change the bulb and size of the tank I have to make it better on them also i have the red light but not a thermometer do i have to get one for them to be as healthy as possible? p.s they are diffrent kinds of chicks just the same size .

    • @cj597
      @cj597 6 років тому

      Erza luvs srawbury cake** lol it’s never a good idea to raise them in tanks, just use a card board box. You can’t monitor heat through their behaviour. If they’re cold, they’ll huddle under the heat lamp, too hot, huddle at the cold side, you ideally want them just out side the hottest spot.

      charlie yeah I move them into a box for them to have a bigger and nicer environment and more air flow for them to be more healthy scince then they have been in great condition I even added a wooden pole for them to jump around and sleep they are very happy now and days thank you

    Becky, how long( days or weeks ) you will have the light for baby chicks ? Or how old the baby chicks to unplug the light ? so that they can rest in the evening.
