Imagine Starks making that shot in game 6 of the finals instead of Hakeem blocking it. He would have been finals MVP and Knicks would have a championship to round off that fantastic playoff. Starks would have been remembered for that (and a great playoff) instead of choking in game 7. As a Knicks fan, that was tough to watch. Loved Starks and his big heart.

But that was the problem with Starks. He was incredibly streaky. And the bad streaks took you out of games. And not much in between, something he could fall back to offensively, when his shots were not falling.

Even a guy like starks would send intimidating vibes across the league if he played today. Just another player that puts out more than most players today, as just a role player. Heart is the separator.

Imo Starks best game was Game 6 in Indiana after Reggie Miller’s Game 5 and infamous choke sign at center court in the Garden. He outplayed him and made sure it got back to the Garden for Game 7.
And that really sums up Starks career he was a solid player that had a rare ability to occasionally outplay hall of famers in big games.

a great effort guy. got the absolute most out of the talent he possessed- and a good defender. never should have been looked upon as a scoring option every single night though- because scoring wasnt what got him into the NBA. he became what those hard nosed 90s era knicks teams needed at that 2-slot.

Starks was the first NBA player to hit 200 3's in a season (his 94-95 season) and one of my favorites to watch when I was back in high school.
People focus on that bad finals game 7 in 94' a little bit too much. He had a bad game, big deal, everyone does sometimes, Starks was a baller.
Also, just realized that poster dunk over Horace Grant was with his off hand

John Starks in todays fast paced, 3pt shooting, no handchecking era would average 20+ ppg several times. In the 90s his numbers declined after 94 mostly due to his game 7 performance in the Finals. He just wasn't the same after that.

You must know this about me, to understand where, when and how I grew up: Born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American (showing HOW I grew up). 1993-97 was among the BEST times of my life! (except 1995) 1993-94 was a top three time in my life! (and, my Sonics lost in the first round to Denver, which shows how great everything ELSE in my life was going, that year) In Seattle, replica jerseys were still budding, and KNICKS 3 STARKS were sold in Seattle! I used to pretend I was John Starks, and shoot 3-pointers, and say, "Yes!!" My Dad unexpectedly passed away in 2003. Life hasn't been as happy for me ever since. I have long thought that I'd live to be 48 years old, and pass away in 2021. If I'm indeed in the final year or two of my life, these John Starks and New York Knicks memories are memories that I will cherish, during my final months of life.

As good as John Starks was, in reality because he was such a streaky shooter, John should have been the 3 or even the 4th option on offense. Loved his hustle and energy but I fault the Knicks not getting the legitimate 2nd star, like Mitch Richmond on their team, who can give you 25 to 30 points consistently and take over games when Ewing couldn't. Because they couldn't obtain that player, the burden was too big for Starks, especially in the Finals against a very good defensive team like the Rockets.

Starks was great, he wasn't the most consistent offensive producer, but he was still the second best offensive option in some great Knicks teams, and played with *fire*. He's a testament to how much hustle and work-ethic matters, and the reason you should take whining from underachievers like Kwame Brown with a grain of salt. You don't need tremendous physical gifts to achieve greatness in the NBA, Starks was only 6'3" with shoes on, definitely on the small side for a two-guard. But he played with heart, he worked his ass off, and we have the great performances to show for it. The two things he's remembered for most, the Dunk and Game 6 of the '94 NBA finals, is fitting. He could get hot and shoot you into a game, or get cold and tank you out of it.
It's kind of a tragedy that by the time he joined the Knicks and developed into a starter, Ewing was already starting to slow down.

Starks, Majerle, Chapman, and a few others were true 90s shooting guards....When Hot: They look like Hall of Famers.....When Not: They'll shoot you outta a game.....

Vernon Maxwell could join that list too lol. He and Starks were very identical. Hot headed and didn't back down from anyone. Never met a shot they didn't like.

I don't really care how good John starks was he was so entertaining to watch. Most NBA players would agree that the New York Knicks in the 1990s were the most fun team to play.

Absolutely. Whether the Knicks won or lost, the fans ALWAYS "got a show". 🥰. Starks, Patrick, Mase, Oak, Greg Anthony, Pat Riley, man they were it

Huge Knicks fan, Starks, alongside Anthony Mason, EMBODIED NY and Basketball in the 90's. A guy who had a never say die attitude because he came from nowhere, (He was literally packing grocery bags.") To becoming an All Star and Sixth Man of the Year. That man was FEARLESS. He backed down from NOBODY. Starks was my Dude. Was nice seeing Johnny Hoops (R.I.P.) in this video. Subscribed.

I am a Bulls fan so in my youth I disliked him. As I look back he was a very good player that played 100% on both ends.

I will never forget the thrills Starks, Ewing, Oakley and Mason brought me. Those years were so special to me. We were never really that good, but we fought with a vengeance for every loose ball, rebound and open shot. And that NYC playground toughness we brought into the NBA pissed alot of other teams off, but in NY we knew our front court could kick the bejeezus out of any other teams on any night of the week. I miss those days.

1st time I saw him was @ a Rockers game...always enjoyed him as a Knick. He's an NBA "Rocky" story for sure.
