    Nice . . . . I used to do KAP in the 80's before the digital age & now that I'm retired from firefighting, I'm going to get back into it. The rig I made isn't a dangle rig like yours, it's a frame type with a stabilizing tail.

      Very cool! I've seen some really creative KAP rigs. I've kept mine pretty basic and just adapted it to newer and bigger cameras over the years.

    LOVE your videos, Evan!! When I do this for the first time, I'm definitely tagging in the first video!
    Have you ever flown a kite at the top of a mountain? I started looking into KAP upon learning that drones are not allowed at national parks, which deterred me from investing in that route for backpacking and hiking trips. In my head I imagine it would be really cool to hike to the top of a mountain and fly an ultra lightweight 180-fov action camera like the Insta360 Go 2 (which I've ordered) to a kite, but I don't know which kite would be (a) portable enough to be carried in a backpack along with other backpacking gear, and (b) is strong enough to hold up to mountain winds, and (c) at just 26.5 grams, would an Go2 be too light?

      Thank you! To answer your questions, there is a KAP foil 1.6 that is a smaller version of this kite: ua-cam.com/video/xq5avrR9RmY/v-deo.html it would be able to lift a small action camera like that pretty easily and packs down real small. It may be just what you're looking for: hqkitesusa.com/proddetail.asp?prod=106758

    What is a good kite for beginners? I would like to use my Garmin Virbe Elite camera that weighs 7 ounces, to get video. I am on a budget but I want a real kite and not a toy. I guess for medium winds and one that can survive crashes on the grass. How much line do you recommend and what kind on line and spool? I really want get into this hobby, I loved it as kid!

    Great advice and super helpful, thanks for this. I want to use a kite to get GoPro footage of our MTB trips in the desert. I’m in Bahrain Middle East and drones are illegal here.

    Please Evan, which kite should I buy to pull my kayak? Considering ease of launch if it goes in the water. Pull angle needs to be in front of kayak. Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated. From Australia, thx

      Hi! I’m not really sure what kind of kite would be best to pull a kayak. Probably some kind of small foil kite similar to what kitesurfers use I would guess.

    this is great information, I am looking into kites for a upcoming project. the kite would be attached to a sailboat for a long trip to give me a aerial view from behind the ship . any thoughts or suggestions for this kind of scenario ?

      Thanks, glad it was helpful. Flying from a boat is great and very doable. I have found that the KAP Foil 3.0 or Levitation Delta are best for that situation, with the KAP Foil being my first choice.

    Hi Evan, What an inspirational video. I started looking for KAP equipment since 2002 since I'm an avid stunt kite fliers and photographer. Back in 2012 I took my first KAP pic on Puerto Rico. I used a Sutton Flowform 30 with 250# line. I also has a 9' and 2 Meter ITW Levitation Deltas a Jones Dopero that I bought second hand for less than $150.00. Last week (June 11, 2020), I bought a ITW Triton. With all this you may think I do have lots of experience on KAPping. Actually I'm not!!! I have a Brooxes Simplex rig with Pekabe single and double blocks but no electronics whatsoever. I just point, shoot and wait for the better. Where did you got your R/C parts for your rig? What model do you use and how you connect your monitor for a better perspective? I will really appreciate your advice. Thanks fir sharing!!!

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer 4 роки тому

      Hi, thanks for watching! My current camera rigs are modified versions of Brooxes rigs. Right now I am using a Sony A7r iv with a variety of lenses, but when I was starting out I used inexpensive point and shoot cameras. I upgraded my cameras as my skill improved and I felt more confident lifting more expensive cameras.
      Here is a video that shows some more detail of my camera rig: ua-cam.com/video/VEq4W042vvk/v-deo.html

    Great video. Very informative. I have a 9ft Levitation Delta but lately, it's been really hard to find days where the conditions are suitable to fly it despite the wide wind range. It's either really calm or way too windy. Medium strength winds are very rare here at the moment. I admit that Nighthawk is very tempting for those high wind days. I find it interesting that on the NZ site, they describe it as a kite suitable for light winds. Though I do see that they also recommend it for high winds when doing KAP.

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer 3 роки тому

      Thank you. The Nighthawk kite will fly in gentle winds, it has a wide wind range. However, it's really only effective for KAP in stronger winds because it doesn't pull as hard at lower wind speeds. I only end up using it if I really need to KAP in very strong wind.

    • @anzaeria
      @anzaeria 2 роки тому

      @@EvanReinheimer Thanks for the clarification. Out of curiosity, can the Nighthawk lift a fairly heavy camera rig? I assuming it would since it's designed for kite fishing and can supposedly handle heavy fishing rigs.

    @Evan Reinheimer >>> Regarding that blue rokkaku in the video, would you say it is overall a _better_ low-wind kite than the Mike Jones' Dopero you lost?

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer 8 місяців тому

      @@chrispalmer1255yes, the 1.6 would be more than enough for a GoPro. The 3.0 is overkill for the GoPro.
