About Hange and the scene: the priest was covered, pretending to be a normal person, Hange gave him a fake identity to protect him. So, the police couldn't know immediately that he was a priest at least they were involved
Because they knew his cover story was fake, Hange realizes that these two secret police agents were involved in the plot that tortured and killed Pastor Nick. So, she is swearing, to their faces, to subject them to the same and worse. She can be a scary woman when she wants to be.
the funny thing about that part to me is that it always reminds me more of a parent chastising their child for doing something wrong rather than a kid seeing the person he grew up with after like 20 years or whatever. Like I love that moment, don't get me wrong, but it always makes me snicker a bit.
The reason why Levi looks different, its because he is 35 and despite his height, the animators tried to draw him age apropriate, so how Isayama wished. In season 1 he looked like a teen. Later on in season 3 he looks good, especially in season 4 with the new art style.

When Levi shouted out “Kenny!” My first thought was “KAHHHN !” In Star Trek II. Anyway, I’ve read that the ensuing fight scene was so elaborate, it took the animators 4 months to complete.

The reason why the Survey Corps assumes that Eren can learn hardening is because both Reiner and Annie could do it (although not in the same way) and they deduced that the titans inside the wall also did it, meaning it's a common ability. That does not necessarily mean that Eren (or all titans) can learn all abilities.
Season 3 is just amazing. It's basically the climax of the story. You'll eventually get answer to most of your questions, you'll see a lot more of Levi, etc... Oh, and the opening of this season's first part, is just *chef kiss* like every other AOT opening, but Red Swan is just such emotional song, you should react to the full version of the openings AND the endings. Oh, and when you finally reach the last episode, don't skip the ending credits/song, watch everything all the way to the end.
So the thing with Hange was that she put herself in the light as someone who is working purely on emotion, and had no inkling on the military police torturing Nick. Then proceeding to threaten the police with the words meant for the "murderers".
Poor Nifa, we met her on season 2 EP 6 and we already lost her. Attack on Titan is a fast pace story with full of foreshadowing so either you're brain is fast enough to follow and remember most of the details and link them with other details from the previous episode, or you need to rewatch those episode multiple times
The reason for why Eren’s Titan looked like that was part of the manga they skipped. TL;DR they were stress testing Eren’s endurance. That was the third transformation in a row.
So the significance of the "He was just a Chairmaker" is another important detail. Pastor Nick is in Protective Custody. His cover story is that he's a Chairmaker. That's what it said on the application they used to get him that room/apartment. So no one should know that he's a Pastor. Hange was just letting them know that she knew exactly what was happening without saying it directly. The guy knows he screwed up in that moment. Aaaand you realized it. Nevermind lol
And the opening song of the beginning of season 3, it's called "red swan" is one of the only songs to get me this emotional, it's so beautiful and just very very emotional, I love it a lot, its probably 2nd or 3rd favorite opening of aot

What’s beyond the sea? What makes AoT so great. But seriously, this season is just so great. Not only does it give you the answers you’ve been craving for, but you just get to see the group happy and having fun more often. But it’s also very sad and serious. A proper mixture. And the political aspect of it, the struggle of the corps.
So in that scene you were confused in (13:30), Hange was essentially saying that she had Pastor Nick reported as just a chair maker instead of a Pastor when she arrested him. So the fact that the Military Police had known that Pastor Nick was a pastor this entire time suggests that the military police knew about his identify despite all official records saying otherwise.
What is so amazing about this anime, is how it out does itself season after season. Strap in, you can only watch this for the first time once. Enjoy the ride.

She figures it out, muddies the water for them, and then swears vengeance with a thin veil of plausible deniability to keep herself out of trouble.

Hey there, it's me again, the one who comments walls of text under every AoT video of yours lolol I'm gonna try to keep this one short I promise. About titans abilities - you can see for example, that both Reiner and Annie have some type of armour, but they are different from each other. Reiner having straight up armour right after transforming while Annie has this crystal-like armour that forms when and where she wants. The abilities ARE special, and we're gonna learn more about them soon, especially about Eren and his titan, don't worry too much about it. And the flashback Eren had that they cut off was him remembering the conversation between Ymir and Berth. He was nearly unconscious when they were talking, so he didn't tell anyone about what he heard back then (and as we can see, he gives the info to Hange later) So basically, with Hange and the Police, Hange was playing dumb (and smart in the same time). For example, she took the guy's hands in hers to prove that ''all the skin on his first was split''. Meaning not only were they there to guard the place, they were the ones responsible for it too. While Pastor Nick wasn't the most likable character, he still didn't say anything through the torture, hats off to him for that. I would say something about the nape and spinal cord and stuff but I'm afraid of spoiling you lmao. Just keep watching. It's hard to remember sometimes what is supposed to be still a secret to you and which info is fine to tell you lolol So, basically, I'll try to explain simply and without spoilers hopefully So - they learn they are being followed and the government wants Historia and Eren. Levi said they cannot go too far into the interior, and then there was Pyxis mentioned - Pyxis, who is in charge of places like Trost, which is the small part that sticks out from the side of the wall. If I remeber correctly, they are in Trost right now. They disguised Armin as Historia and Jean as Eren because they knew people were after them, and the kidnapping confirmed that. But Mikasa with others were always on their trail and found them easily, to get information and learn what the hell is happening. Levi and Nifa (the girl next to him on the roof) were looking after the wagon with the real Eren and Historia just in case. Levi realized them getting back Armin and Jean was pretty easy, because the kidnappers were amateurs, which didn't sit well with the usual work of the Military Police since they are, as he said, too arrogant for that. But it did fit something Kenny would do. You were interested in Levi's story before and some others and I told you to wait and see. Well, now we are pretty close to seeing a lot of Levi so look forward to it :DD I think you can clearly see how Season 3 Part 1 is different. I've heard there are not many people who are fans of the story in S3P1 compared to Part 2 or Season 4. But I actually really enjoy this season - it builds up the characters and the world. It's not just anime about Humans vs mindless titans, because that was never the end goal to begin with. You can clearly see it here, even in the first episode. 1: The breakdown of Hange’s dialogue was to humanize Nick to the Soldiers that she suspects tortured and killed him. If they did do it, it was dirty business to them, but by making him seem like a person with an identity and relationships, she was incurring guilt on their hearts, and their discomfort comfirmed in her mind their lack of innocence in the matter.

As near as I understand it, regular titans just have this disembodied brain and nervous system embedded in them, and it's the same size regardless of how big the titan is (10x100cm). Ymir said she was a mindless titan for decades before she gained the power to become human again. That implies that she had to regenerate a new human body around her disembodied brain, before allowing her titan body to steam away.
Yeah this season take a serious turn, transforming the whole show from "humanity is facing supernatural things like titans and some of them are actually humans" to "this show is about a group of humans facing death coming from the outer world but also facing the plot and corruption their own civilization have build up". Making it more realistic in a way. It would be impossible to have so many humans with such a hierarchy to not be rotten somewhere. Love it ! Also, for a better understanding, you have : - the survey corp (with the wings on the uniform) : they are in charge of reclaming humanity's territory by killing titans and exploring the world behind the walls while setting up bases and camps outside - The Garrison (whith the roses on the uniform) : they take care of all defenses for the Walls whether it be patrols, repairs, or improvements. - The Military Police Brigade (with the horse on the uniform) : basically they are the primary police force within human territory. Not only do they maintain order, but they also serve as the king's guard. - The training corp (with the swords on the uniform) : it's the branch where all the soldiers stay and received trainig until they get to choose which corps they would like to join later on. - The Royal Government (formed by the king and representant of the population) who rule over humanity within the wall - The Chruch of the walls who is directly involved with the Royal Government somehow, but with the belief that the Walls are sacred and untouchable and the belief that it is their responsibility to protect the Walls from any “impurities”, such as humans, rails, etc... so it is safe to assume that they do not respond to the authority of the government all that well And then you have an outsider faction that you have no clue about yet (so no spoiler here) who is sending children soldiers like Reiner, Annie and Bertholt to attack the population behind the wall and to get "something" according to what the boys said in season 2.

"Snatched away again?" Yes, again, if you haven't noticed, Eren has a bit of a tendency to get kidnapped XD First Annie, then Reiner, no supposedly these people. Anyway, there are two things I have to mention for this season, requests if you will. One is to always watch the end credits. I can't say why exactly, but at some point this will pay off. You don't have to actively look each time, but just having it play out as you recap what happened this episode or something would be nice. It leads to one of my favorite moments to see with reaction channels, but unfortunately it's missed A LOT of the time. Two, at some point during this season Erwin will make a speech, now Erwin always makes good speeches, but this one is exceptional. However, it's even more exceptional in DUB, something about how the english voice actor does it just elevates it up to lord of the rings levels of greatness. I assure you that you will know what speech I'm talking about once it happens, if in doubt, not the right speech. It would be GREAT if after that episode you were to react to the speech in english as well. Just search for "erwin speech dub" to find it. Excited for this season, this is the one where I really became a fan, we're nearing the end of the prologue XD
I'll be honest I was not the biggest fan of this arc, drifting away from fighting titans and fighting humans, but by Season 4 it all comes back around and the vision becomes clearer and in retrospect I appreciate this arc more now.
I think that one thing is hint you why noone found human bodies inside Titans is that scene when a worn-out Eren was taken out of his Titan form. That, and the fact that up until this point even Scouts have had no time nor ability to actually check their defeated foes weak spot mid fight and not get eaten in process, before the bodies evaporate.
Luke: *pauses show to vent about mysteries in the narrative, watches a scene twice to try and piece it together, finally continues the episode only to have Hange explain literally everything he was asking about 30 seconds later* As someone watching your videos, this is simultaneously SO funny and SO frustrating when you do this. 😂😂😂 Not me going ‘just watch the showwww’ at my screen…
To answer your questions, 1. Titans might also possess similar abilities like one another but they might not be their special characteristic. Like every Titan flesh is hot, but colossal is the most hot so that is colossal's special characteristic. Or female titan can harden certain parts of her body but the armoured titan has hard coverings on literally his entire body. So that is his special characteristic. So yeah titans can have similar abilities. 2. The intelligent titans have humans in their nape. But the mindless ones are just humans turned into titans. There is no human controlling the mindless ones from the nape because the entire Titan is a human which grew larger. Hence a human doesn't need to be shrinked to fit in the nape. 3. Kenny isn't against the military police. He WAS against them which became an urban legend. Now he's working for the military police. As for factions, the military police and the interior faction of the military police is working for the royal family. That has always been the case. If you remember season 1 said that military police serves the king. So the church is different. And royal family is different. The military police is working for the royal family and has hired thugs like Kenny. And Kenny has his whole team with that gear. Hope this helps. Rest will be explained. And yes everything is connected in this story. Whatever is happening is moving the plot forward. Lastly, s3 us different. S4 will feel even more different. S1 and s2 was basically mystery, action, lore, thriller. Now add politics to it in s3 and s4. And levi is back and you are about to witness the best animated sequence of this whole show featuring levi.
It is incredible how AoT can switch its narrative style every season. But you are doing pretty well keeping up, you are paying close attention and are connecting some of the dots. It is impossible to immediately get everything that is going on so don't worry too much about it. Nifa, Lauda and Keiji are the people Levi borrowed from Hange's squad and they have been around mostly in the background since the second half of season 1.
Can't wait to go through this season, S3 is one of the best in anime in general tbh :D The question of how no one noticed humans before now was something I hadn't thought about, but we know that the titan body can to an extent start absorbing the body of the person inside if they overstretch themselves (seen in this episode when getting Eren out of his titan form after 4 goes at forming it - as it basically meant cutting the skin off his face/arms to make it let him go). Maybe the OG human that created the titan gets absorbed over time (unless they become a shifter a la Ymir, presumably then their OG body regenerates from the titan's spine). The only other reason that I can think of as to why no one noticed are that the cuts across the neck to kill titans are like 10cm deep and typically done on the move - by the time you get back around to the titan you just killed to look at it, the body has probably already evaporated into steam, especially the smaller ones. If the OG human has been in there for so long that they got absorbed, that means they've gone with it. IDK though, it's a good one to ponder!
12:30 Pastor Nick was being hidden, as he was under investigation and being detained because he knows "something" about the walls (and the titan within -- as seen at the end of season 1). Hange created a fake identify (aka. her "friend," Nick who was a "chair maker") to protect him because he is a valuable witness. He was murdered in the barracks (which is immediately strange because you would think that entails high security...). Hange then goes to investitgate his death and sees two Military Police at the crime scene -- and they are MPs from an outside region (again, raising suspicion because why would two outside-regional MPs care about a 'chair maker'?). So Hange plays the "grieving friend" and in the process, grasps the MPs hand and examines it (seeing his bruised knuckles) and then ponders why someone would attack him -- to which the MP replies that the church is known for having valuable items (iron), which is reason for murder -- which is where Hange catches him in his lie. She then sends a threat to "whoever" killed Nick -- telling them that they will not get away with the murder and she will make them suffer a miserable death Someone killed the Pastor... but why?

You are right to say it's hard to keep up as this episode introduced a lot of things that will be relevant for the rest of this season. I had to watch it a second time for me to understand everything that was going on. But nevertheless, this season is really good and I can't wait for your reactions! (Also, lots of Levi in this season)
They don’t need Levi, although they do need/want Eren and Historia. Levi and Kenny have personal history with one another, thus them targeting Levi is also just for personal reasons. That and he’s an obvious threat to their plans, and Kenny knows Levi’s strength well. More of their past relationship will be shown soon, it explorers Levi’s life before the no regrets ova…I think you’ll enjoy this season because of the focus on Levi :) (but not just him of course) The good thing about s3 is things actually move along very quickly, so you don’t have to wait long to learn about their relationship, or what Kenny’s goal is. That’s partly what people like so much about the season. It’s a perfect mix of action and information, and has the biggest information drops in the show. My personal favourite seasons in order are S3 > S4 (first half) > S1 > S2 / S4 (second half) S3 is universally loved and probably the most popular, whereas s4, despite being very loved as well, is much more controversial and divided among fans- at least for the second half. People will remind you closer to the episode when it comes, but make sure you watch the ending credits of s3 episode 12! S3 episode 11 has a special ending too, although unlike episode 11’s, episode 12 looks like a normal ending at first.

When you asked what were the message Levi gave Mikasa, I just remembered about a meme we have in Brazil that says "Gossip told in half almost kills the gossipy". (I do not know if the translation make senses, but it is one of my favorite memes 😂)
The reason Eren's transformation didn't go well is because they'd been doing it for a while already. In the manga they showed that Eren transformed at least three different times, during which Hange tried to see how much Eren could understand things/follow orders. Like "Lift your leg up" and "build something". But his titan became smaller and weaker after each transformation. The anime showed only how the experiment ended
I saw this in dub, and it came off more like she was trying to play it off like she didn't know it was them, but still let them know that she knows, but in a way that they can't say that she threatened them, which she did right after that before she left... Basically saying I'll make you pay, but with a smile and oblivious demeanor so that she can keep the position that makes that possible... She asked them to pass a message onto whoever was responsible, and then looked them in the eyes and threatened revenge on them, then reiterated the request for them to tell whoever that message concerned.
Well, the part of Eren's transformation, some other commented on that, the anime doesn't mention that he has been transforming into a titan several times during the day, so his looks at that scene is because he has reached a transformation limit so to say. The scene with Hange on pastor Nick is basically the old trope of a smart character playing dumb to get information, basically she is playing Columbo here, she is saying things in a way to make the Interior Police to give answers. She hid Nick under a false identiy, so nobody in the barracks except her, Erwin, Levi and Moblit knew who he really was, the fact that the Interior Police knew makes the whole thing smells fishy, she also was looking at the officer's hands and noticed the bruises. So you caught that one almost completely. Levi was suspicious because the whole kidnaping by amateurs sound like a red herring, and is something that seemed familiar to him, that's why he brought up the story of Kenny the Ripper, what he said about Kenny the Ripper, take his word for granted, he is not lying in that scene. Part 1 of Season 3 (first 12 episodes) have a lot of anwers but also leaves several more questions unanswered. You are right that you have to keep attention on what is said, but also you have to keep attention to the images. Some charactera will be telling stories in this season, images will be shown during those times, if you don't look closely, you'll miss several answers to questions you have, and the anime will never mention them ever again, it's going to assume that you already figured them out.
21:48 My personal theory about this particularity of mindless titans is that the transformed person's body rapidly degrades due to temperature. Titans have extremely high body temperatures, they emit large amounts of steam when injured or killed. All that remains from the person is the spine and perhaps the brain, which connects to the spine and brain of the titan body. Titan shifters or people who possess the power of titans seem to have a natural resistance to high temperatures. Those who activate the power of a titan do not lose their corporeal form within the titan, it connects to the titan body. What does happen is that marks are generated at the contact points between the power user's body and the links to the titan's body. If a titan shifter uses their power for too long, their facial structure will begin to change to resemble their titan's face. It is no coincidence that in episode 5 of the first season Eren was able to approach the colossal titan without being burned. He was already the wielder of a titan power and so he had such high resistance to heat. Holders of a titan power have that resistance so as not to succumb to the internal temperatures of their titan while using it. Mindless titans are unable to revert to their human form and their human body is consumed by the titan's body.
The scouts were grasping at straws, as Armin said, about Eren's abilities. They just don't know. What they do know, is that the walls are made of titan hardening, that Annie formed a crystal around herself and had called titans to herself in the past, that Reiner has some super hard armor that COULD be hardening, that Beast titan can control titans, and that Eren has now shown that he controlled titans. All of this indicates that somehow different titans are sharing at least SOME abilities, and they're basically trying to figure out how it all works.
I know that you’re almost caught up to the show now, so I can say this without fear of your being spoiled: The beginning of season 3 can be a bit confusing. Others here have clarified some parts, but you may be wondering why the sudden change with the central government coming after Eren and Historia seemingly out of nowhere. It can be confusing with so much info coming at you at once. If you remember, at the end of season 2, the Military Police accompanied the Scouts on Eren’s retrieval mission when Reiner and Bertholdt took him and Ymir. It was members of the MPs who witnessed Eren harnessing the power of the Coordinate to end the battle. They brought back this info and told those in power, including Rod Reiss. Thus, season 3 begins with the Interior Police (basically the gestapo of the MPs) and Kenny’s crew, at the behest of Rod Reiss, attempting to retrieve both eren and historia in order to return the Coordinate back to the royal family with Historia as the vessel to receive it.
hey, just a heads-up; from now on, these seasons are one of the hardest ones to understand, so keep your eyes open at all times, even for minuscule details. apart for that, congrats for S3! I'm so hyped now!
Ah yes Kenny,i remember when i read this chapter in the manga,it was dope and had to wait a long time to see it animated,and oh boy it didnt dissapoint, in fact it surpassed my expectations.
Remember the walls are made of the same of the same material of "Annie's ability"? Those titans hardened themself to create them. Which means, the hardened ability is somehow 'common', but Eren can't do it. That's what they want Eren to learn. Reiner hard armor is a different thing. That's Reiner's.
13:38 Apart from baiting out the pastor information(which you caught), Hange acting like she didn't know about Nick's identity is also to buy time for the scouts to investigate. Since the police didn't even flinch after hearing Hange and Moblit's rank, she assumed that the police have someone bigger behind supporting their murder. If Hange admits that she knows Nick was a pastor, they would start looking into the need of killing Hange, or other scouts who have possibly gotten information from Nick that they should not have immediately. By acting like Nick is just a normal guy, Hange made herself suspicious but not to the point they should kill Hange straight away. The last part about revenging is to show the police Hange have the will to revenge whoever it is that killed Nick, which is almost certainly the police, she also acted in a little maniac way to let the police think "this crazy woman will actually be difficult to deal with".
It's funny that you mentioned that it's really hard to understand all the alliances. Apparently Isayama thought so as well. Hence why he included a small chart with the main characters and their alliances at the introduction page of every manga volume. But don't worry you pick up the clues really quick for you first watch through
To clarify, SOME titan abilities are universal. The regeneration and hardening are some of those, but other abilities, like the Armored Titan's...armor, or the steam from the Colossal Titan, are specific to that titan. Can't explain more without spoiling anything, but that's how it is. Annie could harden, and the walls are made of hardened titan skin, plus they know every titan has regenerative abilities, so the assumption they're making is that it's an ability possessed by all the Titans, and that it's simply a lack of experience and knowledge of how to use titan abilities that's stopping Eren from doing it right now.
Time to bring out the pushpins and yarn. XD No seriously, that would be hilarious if you set up a board like that behind you that just gets more and more crazy as the series continues.
Titans do have special abilities except for maybe one. i'm not spoiling anything btw Eren's titan is the attack titan , also known as shingeki no kyojin. the name of the anime in its original japanese language. as the name implies , he is very good at attacking , thats why he is so ripped. you'll find more about his titan as the show goes on so thats why im gonna be vague and not reveal anything else about him. reiner has the armored titan , which gives extra armor at the cost of speed ( even tho he runs quite fast sometimes for some unexplicable reasons ) when running he will let go of the armor. berthold is the collosal titan , which is a extremely big titan and also appears to be really slow but honestly they can travel quite far with one step even if it does look dreadfully slow in animation, this is also the only* titan without skin and this explains the tremendous heat/smoke that it can let off. the collosal titan is also a type of transformation that comes with a risk. everytime you turn into the collosal titan , because of how big it is , it will explode and burn people surrounding him because he is big. so its best to not get near him. it also takes a toll on the user to transform into him. annie.... well annie is agile i guess? and technical? but really no abilities original to her to speak of. Ymir is the Jaw titan... as the name implies , their specialty is their strong jaw. thats about all. a basic ability that all titan users have is hardening their skin. it's not a special ability in that sense though if you compare it to regular titans AKA "pure titans" , since those cant harden their skin at all. why? no one knows. why cant those people be cut out of the neck of titans and remain alive? no one knows. why are there so many titans that can do twirls in the air and backflips and none of the titan users can do so? no one knows. thats all for the titans you've seen so far , i cant give more info since im afraid to be spoiling you and no one wants that.

About Hange and the scene: the priest was covered, pretending to be a normal person, Hange gave him a fake identity to protect him. So, the police couldn't know immediately that he was a priest at least they were involved
Because they knew his cover story was fake, Hange realizes that these two secret police agents were involved in the plot that tortured and killed Pastor Nick. So, she is swearing, to their faces, to subject them to the same and worse. She can be a scary woman when she wants to be.

the funny thing about that part to me is that it always reminds me more of a parent chastising their child for doing something wrong rather than a kid seeing the person he grew up with after like 20 years or whatever.

The reason why Levi looks different, its because he is 35 and despite his height, the animators tried to draw him age apropriate, so how Isayama wished. In season 1 he looked like a teen. Later on in season 3 he looks good, especially in season 4 with the new art style.

Moblit Berner is a great side character. He has always been there doing his thing - looking out for Hange's well being and sometimes caling her out for her crassness. 😆
The reason why the Survey Corps assumes that Eren can learn hardening is because both Reiner and Annie could do it (although not in the same way) and they deduced that the titans inside the wall also did it, meaning it's a common ability. That does not necessarily mean that Eren (or all titans) can learn all abilities.

Season 3 is just amazing. It's basically the climax of the story. You'll eventually get answer to most of your questions, you'll see a lot more of Levi, etc...
Oh, and the opening of this season's first part, is just *chef kiss* like every other AOT opening, but Red Swan is just such emotional song, you should react to the full version of the openings AND the endings. Oh, and when you finally reach the last episode, don't skip the ending credits/song, watch everything all the way to the end.

So the thing with Hange was that she put herself in the light as someone who is working purely on emotion, and had no inkling on the military police torturing Nick. Then proceeding to threaten the police with the words meant for the "murderers".
Poor Nifa, we met her on season 2 EP 6 and we already lost her. Attack on Titan is a fast pace story with full of foreshadowing so either you're brain is fast enough to follow and remember most of the details and link them with other details from the previous episode, or you need to rewatch those episode multiple times

The reason for why Eren’s Titan looked like that was part of the manga they skipped. TL;DR they were stress testing Eren’s endurance. That was the third transformation in a row.

So the significance of the "He was just a Chairmaker" is another important detail. Pastor Nick is in Protective Custody. His cover story is that he's a Chairmaker. That's what it said on the application they used to get him that room/apartment. So no one should know that he's a Pastor.
Hange was just letting them know that she knew exactly what was happening without saying it directly. The guy knows he screwed up in that moment.

Moblit is a brave guy, just look how he take an arm of a Police officer just to calm him.
So in that scene you were confused in (13:30), Hange was essentially saying that she had Pastor Nick reported as just a chair maker instead of a Pastor when she arrested him. So the fact that the Military Police had known that Pastor Nick was a pastor this entire time suggests that the military police knew about his identify despite all official records saying otherwise.
What is so amazing about this anime, is how it out does itself season after season. Strap in, you can only watch this for the first time once. Enjoy the ride.
She put chairmaker on his application to live there because he was basically in witness protection. Nobody there was supposed to know he was a priest. The rest you basically got. She figures it out, muddies the water for them, and then swears vengeance with a thin veil of plausible deniability to keep herself out of trouble.

I'm gonna try to keep this one short I promise.
About titans abilities - you can see for example, that both Reiner and Annie have some type of armour, but they are different from each other. Reiner having straight up armour right after transforming while Annie has this crystal-like armour that forms when and where she wants. The abilities ARE special, and we're gonna learn more about them soon, especially about Eren and his titan, don't worry too much about it.
And the flashback Eren had that they cut off was him remembering the conversation between Ymir and Berth. He was nearly unconscious when they were talking, so he didn't tell anyone about what he heard back then (and as we can see, he gives the info to Hange later)
So basically, with Hange and the Police, Hange was playing dumb (and smart in the same time). For example, she took the guy's hands in hers to prove that ''all the skin on his first was split''. Meaning not only were they there to guard the place, they were the ones responsible for it too.
While Pastor Nick wasn't the most likable character, he still didn't say anything through the torture, hats off to him for that.
I would say something about the nape and spinal cord and stuff but I'm afraid of spoiling you lmao. Just keep watching. It's hard to remember sometimes what is supposed to be still a secret to you and which info is fine to tell you lolol
So, basically, I'll try to explain simply and without spoilers hopefully
So - they learn they are being followed and the government wants Historia and Eren. Levi said they cannot go too far into the interior, and then there was Pyxis mentioned - Pyxis, who is in charge of places like Trost, which is the small part that sticks out from the side of the wall. If I remeber correctly, they are in Trost right now.
They disguised Armin as Historia and Jean as Eren because they knew people were after them, and the kidnapping confirmed that. But Mikasa with others were always on their trail and found them easily, to get information and learn what the hell is happening.
Levi and Nifa (the girl next to him on the roof) were looking after the wagon with the real Eren and Historia just in case. Levi realized them getting back Armin and Jean was pretty easy, because the kidnappers were amateurs, which didn't sit well with the usual work of the Military Police since they are, as he said, too arrogant for that.
But it did fit something Kenny would do.
You were interested in Levi's story before and some others and I told you to wait and see. Well, now we are pretty close to seeing a lot of Levi so look forward to it :DD
I think you can clearly see how Season 3 Part 1 is different. I've heard there are not many people who are fans of the story in S3P1 compared to Part 2 or Season 4.
But I actually really enjoy this season - it builds up the characters and the world. It's not just anime about Humans vs mindless titans, because that was never the end goal to begin with. You can clearly see it here, even in the first episode.

1: The breakdown of Hange’s dialogue was to humanize Nick to the Soldiers that she suspects tortured and killed him. If they did do it, it was dirty business to them, but by making him seem like a person with an identity and relationships, she was incurring guilt on their hearts, and their discomfort comfirmed in her mind their lack of innocence in the matter.
This is in addition to the correct answers that were already listed about his cover identity, just a retrospective overanalysis
in manga, they did a lot of experiment on Eren, recognition，speaking，space recognition，of course body , etc, etc. p.s. Eren is so cute during his time with Levi, and he is tidy lol

As near as I understand it, regular titans just have this disembodied brain and nervous system embedded in them, and it's the same size regardless of how big the titan is (10x100cm). Ymir said she was a mindless titan for decades before she gained the power to become human again. That implies that she had to regenerate a new human body around her disembodied brain, before allowing her titan body to steam away.
Yeah this season take a serious turn, transforming the whole show from "humanity is facing supernatural things like titans and some of them are actually humans" to "this show is about a group of humans facing death coming from the outer world but also facing the plot and corruption their own civilization have build up". Making it more realistic in a way. It would be impossible to have so many humans with such a hierarchy to not be rotten somewhere. Love it !
Also, for a better understanding, you have :
- the survey corp (with the wings on the uniform) : they are in charge of reclaming humanity's territory by killing titans and exploring the world behind the walls while setting up bases and camps outside
- The Garrison (whith the roses on the uniform) : they take care of all defenses for the Walls whether it be patrols, repairs, or improvements.
- The Military Police Brigade (with the horse on the uniform) : basically they are the primary police force within human territory. Not only do they maintain order, but they also serve as the king's guard.
- The training corp (with the swords on the uniform) : it's the branch where all the soldiers stay and received trainig until they get to choose which corps they would like to join later on.
- The Royal Government (formed by the king and representant of the population) who rule over humanity within the wall
- The Chruch of the walls who is directly involved with the Royal Government somehow, but with the belief that the Walls are sacred and untouchable and the belief that it is their responsibility to protect the Walls from any “impurities”, such as humans, rails, etc... so it is safe to assume that they do not respond to the authority of the government all that well
And then you have an outsider faction that you have no clue about yet (so no spoiler here) who is sending children soldiers like Reiner, Annie and Bertholt to attack the population behind the wall and to get "something" according to what the boys said in season 2.
You're about to see the best animation this show has to offer next episode.

"Snatched away again?" Yes, again, if you haven't noticed, Eren has a bit of a tendency to get kidnapped XD First Annie, then Reiner, no supposedly these people.
Anyway, there are two things I have to mention for this season, requests if you will. One is to always watch the end credits. I can't say why exactly, but at some point this will pay off. You don't have to actively look each time, but just having it play out as you recap what happened this episode or something would be nice. It leads to one of my favorite moments to see with reaction channels, but unfortunately it's missed A LOT of the time.
Two, at some point during this season Erwin will make a speech, now Erwin always makes good speeches, but this one is exceptional. However, it's even more exceptional in DUB, something about how the english voice actor does it just elevates it up to lord of the rings levels of greatness. I assure you that you will know what speech I'm talking about once it happens, if in doubt, not the right speech. It would be GREAT if after that episode you were to react to the speech in english as well. Just search for "erwin speech dub" to find it.
Excited for this season, this is the one where I really became a fan, we're nearing the end of the prologue XD
I'll be honest I was not the biggest fan of this arc, drifting away from fighting titans and fighting humans, but by Season 4 it all comes back around and the vision becomes clearer and in retrospect I appreciate this arc more now.
I think that one thing is hint you why noone found human bodies inside Titans is that scene when a worn-out Eren was taken out of his Titan form. That, and the fact that up until this point even Scouts have had no time nor ability to actually check their defeated foes weak spot mid fight and not get eaten in process, before the bodies evaporate.
Luke: *pauses show to vent about mysteries in the narrative, watches a scene twice to try and piece it together, finally continues the episode only to have Hange explain literally everything he was asking about 30 seconds later*

To answer your questions,
1. Titans might also possess similar abilities like one another but they might not be their special characteristic. Like every Titan flesh is hot, but colossal is the most hot so that is colossal's special characteristic. Or female titan can harden certain parts of her body but the armoured titan has hard coverings on literally his entire body. So that is his special characteristic. So yeah titans can have similar abilities.
2. The intelligent titans have humans in their nape. But the mindless ones are just humans turned into titans. There is no human controlling the mindless ones from the nape because the entire Titan is a human which grew larger. Hence a human doesn't need to be shrinked to fit in the nape.
3. Kenny isn't against the military police. He WAS against them which became an urban legend. Now he's working for the military police. As for factions, the military police and the interior faction of the military police is working for the royal family. That has always been the case. If you remember season 1 said that military police serves the king. So the church is different. And royal family is different. The military police is working for the royal family and has hired thugs like Kenny. And Kenny has his whole team with that gear.

And yes everything is connected in this story. Whatever is happening is moving the plot forward.
Lastly, s3 us different. S4 will feel even more different. S1 and s2 was basically mystery, action, lore, thriller. Now add politics to it in s3 and s4.
And levi is back and you are about to witness the best animated sequence of this whole show featuring levi.
It is incredible how AoT can switch its narrative style every season. But you are doing pretty well keeping up, you are paying close attention and are connecting some of the dots. It is impossible to immediately get everything that is going on so don't worry too much about it.
Nifa, Lauda and Keiji are the people Levi borrowed from Hange's squad and they have been around mostly in the background since the second half of season 1.
Can't wait to go through this season, S3 is one of the best in anime in general tbh :D
The question of how no one noticed humans before now was something I hadn't thought about, but we know that the titan body can to an extent start absorbing the body of the person inside if they overstretch themselves (seen in this episode when getting Eren out of his titan form after 4 goes at forming it - as it basically meant cutting the skin off his face/arms to make it let him go). Maybe the OG human that created the titan gets absorbed over time (unless they become a shifter a la Ymir, presumably then their OG body regenerates from the titan's spine).
The only other reason that I can think of as to why no one noticed are that the cuts across the neck to kill titans are like 10cm deep and typically done on the move - by the time you get back around to the titan you just killed to look at it, the body has probably already evaporated into steam, especially the smaller ones. If the OG human has been in there for so long that they got absorbed, that means they've gone with it. IDK though, it's a good one to ponder!
12:30 Pastor Nick was being hidden, as he was under investigation and being detained because he knows "something" about the walls (and the titan within -- as seen at the end of season 1). Hange created a fake identify (aka. her "friend," Nick who was a "chair maker") to protect him because he is a valuable witness.
He was murdered in the barracks (which is immediately strange because you would think that entails high security...). Hange then goes to investitgate his death and sees two Military Police at the crime scene -- and they are MPs from an outside region (again, raising suspicion because why would two outside-regional MPs care about a 'chair maker'?). So Hange plays the "grieving friend" and in the process, grasps the MPs hand and examines it (seeing his bruised knuckles) and then ponders why someone would attack him -- to which the MP replies that the church is known for having valuable items (iron), which is reason for murder -- which is where Hange catches him in his lie.
She then sends a threat to "whoever" killed Nick -- telling them that they will not get away with the murder and she will make them suffer a miserable death
Someone killed the Pastor... but why?

They don’t need Levi, although they do need/want Eren and Historia.
Levi and Kenny have personal history with one another, thus them targeting Levi is also just for personal reasons. That and he’s an obvious threat to their plans, and Kenny knows Levi’s strength well.

The good thing about s3 is things actually move along very quickly, so you don’t have to wait long to learn about their relationship, or what Kenny’s goal is. That’s partly what people like so much about the season. It’s a perfect mix of action and information, and has the biggest information drops in the show.
My personal favourite seasons in order are S3 > S4 (first half) > S1 > S2 / S4 (second half)
S3 is universally loved and probably the most popular, whereas s4, despite being very loved as well, is much more controversial and divided among fans- at least for the second half.
People will remind you closer to the episode when it comes, but make sure you watch the ending credits of s3 episode 12! S3 episode 11 has a special ending too, although unlike episode 11’s, episode 12 looks like a normal ending at first.
Kenny is Levi and Mikasa's uncle, Kenny actually raised Levi and taught him everything he knows.

The reason Eren's transformation didn't go well is because they'd been doing it for a while already. In the manga they showed that Eren transformed at least three different times, during which Hange tried to see how much Eren could understand things/follow orders. Like "Lift your leg up" and "build something". But his titan became smaller and weaker after each transformation. The anime showed only how the experiment ended

I saw this in dub, and it came off more like she was trying to play it off like she didn't know it was them, but still let them know that she knows, but in a way that they can't say that she threatened them, which she did right after that before she left... Basically saying I'll make you pay, but with a smile and oblivious demeanor so that she can keep the position that makes that possible... She asked them to pass a message onto whoever was responsible, and then looked them in the eyes and threatened revenge on them, then reiterated the request for them to tell whoever that message concerned.

Well, the part of Eren's transformation, some other commented on that, the anime doesn't mention that he has been transforming into a titan several times during the day, so his looks at that scene is because he has reached a transformation limit so to say.
The scene with Hange on pastor Nick is basically the old trope of a smart character playing dumb to get information, basically she is playing Columbo here, she is saying things in a way to make the Interior Police to give answers. She hid Nick under a false identiy, so nobody in the barracks except her, Erwin, Levi and Moblit knew who he really was, the fact that the Interior Police knew makes the whole thing smells fishy, she also was looking at the officer's hands and noticed the bruises. So you caught that one almost completely.
Levi was suspicious because the whole kidnaping by amateurs sound like a red herring, and is something that seemed familiar to him, that's why he brought up the story of Kenny the Ripper, what he said about Kenny the Ripper, take his word for granted, he is not lying in that scene.
Part 1 of Season 3 (first 12 episodes) have a lot of anwers but also leaves several more questions unanswered. You are right that you have to keep attention on what is said, but also you have to keep attention to the images. Some charactera will be telling stories in this season, images will be shown during those times, if you don't look closely, you'll miss several answers to questions you have, and the anime will never mention them ever again, it's going to assume that you already figured them out.

My personal theory about this particularity of mindless titans is that the transformed person's body rapidly degrades due to temperature. Titans have extremely high body temperatures, they emit large amounts of steam when injured or killed. All that remains from the person is the spine and perhaps the brain, which connects to the spine and brain of the titan body.
Titan shifters or people who possess the power of titans seem to have a natural resistance to high temperatures. Those who activate the power of a titan do not lose their corporeal form within the titan, it connects to the titan body. What does happen is that marks are generated at the contact points between the power user's body and the links to the titan's body. If a titan shifter uses their power for too long, their facial structure will begin to change to resemble their titan's face.
It is no coincidence that in episode 5 of the first season Eren was able to approach the colossal titan without being burned. He was already the wielder of a titan power and so he had such high resistance to heat.
Holders of a titan power have that resistance so as not to succumb to the internal temperatures of their titan while using it. Mindless titans are unable to revert to their human form and their human body is consumed by the titan's body.

The scouts were grasping at straws, as Armin said, about Eren's abilities. They just don't know. What they do know, is that the walls are made of titan hardening, that Annie formed a crystal around herself and had called titans to herself in the past, that Reiner has some super hard armor that COULD be hardening, that Beast titan can control titans, and that Eren has now shown that he controlled titans.
All of this indicates that somehow different titans are sharing at least SOME abilities, and they're basically trying to figure out how it all works.
Oh, btw. Nothing major, but Ymir's titan had a name. The Jaw Titan. it's trait is a very strong jaw.

I know that you’re almost caught up to the show now, so I can say this without fear of your being spoiled:
The beginning of season 3 can be a bit confusing. Others here have clarified some parts, but you may be wondering why the sudden change with the central government coming after Eren and Historia seemingly out of nowhere. It can be confusing with so much info coming at you at once.
If you remember, at the end of season 2, the Military Police accompanied the Scouts on Eren’s retrieval mission when Reiner and Bertholdt took him and Ymir. It was members of the MPs who witnessed Eren harnessing the power of the Coordinate to end the battle. They brought back this info and told those in power, including Rod Reiss. Thus, season 3 begins with the Interior Police (basically the gestapo of the MPs) and Kenny’s crew, at the behest of Rod Reiss, attempting to retrieve both eren and historia in order to return the Coordinate back to the royal family with Historia as the vessel to receive it.
Next episode will be a big hit. s

Those titans hardened themself to create them. Which means, the hardened ability is somehow 'common', but Eren can't do it. That's what they want Eren to learn.

Apart from baiting out the pastor information(which you caught), Hange acting like she didn't know about Nick's identity is also to buy time for the scouts to investigate.
Since the police didn't even flinch after hearing Hange and Moblit's rank, she assumed that the police have someone bigger behind supporting their murder.
If Hange admits that she knows Nick was a pastor, they would start looking into the need of killing Hange, or other scouts who have possibly gotten information from Nick that they should not have immediately. By acting like Nick is just a normal guy, Hange made herself suspicious but not to the point they should kill Hange straight away.
The last part about revenging is to show the police Hange have the will to revenge whoever it is that killed Nick, which is almost certainly the police, she also acted in a little maniac way to let the police think "this crazy woman will actually be difficult to deal with".
My favourite scene of levi ofcourse in the end of that episode 😩😩😩 I was rolling on the floor screaming.
It's funny that you mentioned that it's really hard to understand all the alliances. Apparently Isayama thought so as well. Hence why he included a small chart with the main characters and their alliances at the introduction page of every manga volume. But don't worry you pick up the clues really quick for you first watch through
To clarify, SOME titan abilities are universal. The regeneration and hardening are some of those, but other abilities, like the Armored Titan's...armor, or the steam from the Colossal Titan, are specific to that titan. Can't explain more without spoiling anything, but that's how it is. Annie could harden, and the walls are made of hardened titan skin, plus they know every titan has regenerative abilities, so the assumption they're making is that it's an ability possessed by all the Titans, and that it's simply a lack of experience and knowledge of how to use titan abilities that's stopping Eren from doing it right now.
Time to bring out the pushpins and yarn. XD No seriously, that would be hilarious if you set up a board like that behind you that just gets more and more crazy as the series continues.

Eren's titan is the attack titan , also known as shingeki no kyojin. the name of the anime in its original japanese language. as the name implies , he is very good at attacking , thats why he is so ripped.
you'll find more about his titan as the show goes on so thats why im gonna be vague and not reveal anything else about him.
reiner has the armored titan , which gives extra armor at the cost of speed ( even tho he runs quite fast sometimes for some unexplicable reasons )
when running he will let go of the armor.
berthold is the collosal titan , which is a extremely big titan and also appears to be really slow but honestly they can travel quite far with one step even if it does look dreadfully slow in animation,
this is also the only* titan without skin and this explains the tremendous heat/smoke that it can let off. the collosal titan is also a type of transformation that comes with a risk. everytime you turn into the collosal titan , because of how big it is , it will explode and burn people surrounding him because he is big. so its best to not get near him. it also takes a toll on the user to transform into him.
annie.... well annie is agile i guess? and technical? but really no abilities original to her to speak of.
Ymir is the Jaw titan... as the name implies , their specialty is their strong jaw. thats about all.
a basic ability that all titan users have is hardening their skin. it's not a special ability in that sense though if you compare it to regular titans AKA "pure titans" , since those cant harden their skin at all. why? no one knows.
why cant those people be cut out of the neck of titans and remain alive? no one knows.
why are there so many titans that can do twirls in the air and backflips and none of the titan users can do so? no one knows.
