Quite enjoyed this. Thinking the 'I love you' makes sense in context of UK Jez, sticking to his principles over getting laid, and US Jez, just evaded getting shot. These might have not been prime pilot material for viewers not accustomed to Jez's lack of principles, and the gun thing sticks out as UK writers do US. Still it made me smile.
Would it be worthwhile someone reaching out to the producers, or is this material likely still bound up in ownership issues?

Quality work, Andrew! Just a thought: if this was an aborted project it's possible, in fact likely, the sound mix was never completed. This sounds like partly a rough mix to me.

There's nothing inherently british about a drug-addled failed musician. But there's something about super hans that is so british. I just don't know how someone could write him into an american context. Nor can I think of any non british actors who I think could play the role well.
Honestly if I was given the job of writing a us pilot, I'd pick a british actor for super hans, and make him someone who moved to america from england.

turns out there was a third attempt to americanise peep show in 2016 which was to be created by a tv channel called Starz. I couldn't find any information on it other than it's announcement and that someone called Eli Jorne was going to produce it. Other than that no casting information came out to my knowledge so it looks as though it may have been scrapped pretty early on in development. There was also talk recently about a gender swapped version with Mark and Jez as women which will be the 4th attempt at a U.S peep show remake, the writer for that has been credited on Portlandia, Community, Arrested Development and South Park so could be good but also at the same time could be completely terrible.

I think one of the issues with both american versions of Jeff is they fail to capture the depth of his character. Jeff is interesting as he acts primarily as a foil to Mark, but what's important is (in the early series at least) he's basically just a normal guy, a bit blokey and naturally self confident, but also has his flaws. He's also the polar opposite of Mark, being northern he should be at somewhat of a disadvantage for London corporate life, however he makes up for it through his charisma and general level of psychopathy required for corporate life, whereas mark should be at an advantage having more of a southern cityboy upbringing, but he struggles due to his social awkwardness and lacking that inherent psychopathy, instead being more of a sociopath. By casting the Jeff character as just an average successful guy with no real clear difference from Mark in culture or upbringing, you lose a lot of what makes Jeff's character work. I think casting Jeff as someone with more of a midwestern or southern accent, it would have saved a lot of what made Jeff's character work. I think it really goes to show the depth of the earlier series' writing, however I think it's something that Armstrong and Bain seemed to forget as around the time the pilot would have been written also seems to coincide to when Jeff's character was becoming heavily flanderized into more of a cartoonish bad guy/comic foil for Mark rather than a character who could actually exist in the real world.

    • @colonialstraits1069
      @colonialstraits1069 5 місяців тому

Chicago is Midwestern and is filled with small town Midwesterners, who moved to the “Big City”. The closest we could do to accomplish this would be to make Mark from an affluent Chicago suburb and make Jez from the Southside of Chicago but those regional/class distinctions aren’t as pronounced in America. There really wouldn’t be a good way to make an American Peep Show work, without seriously re-tooling the entire set up, which would likely still fail.

Well apart from racism - Til Death Us Do Part was a popular old British show about a comical bigot that got translated into very successful American and other national versions. So in Britain the name Alf Garnett became a byword for a bigoted old curmudgeon, while in America the same character is known as Archie Bunker from All In The Family.
But most of these modern attempts to remake are done by slapdash hacks who are just copying someone's work, they're naturally going to dumb it down because they themselves are dumb. There was no need for an American Office, I showed UK Office to Americans and they were every bit as fascinated/disgusted/captivated by Gervais's David Brent as the British were. And Gervais is like 'their' British comedian now, they think he's the top UK comedian, haha. He's famous, he did Extras with people like DeNiro in it, alongside old Eastenders actors, lol. So it's strange that there's an American Office at all really, and especially without Gervais, since Gervais himself is a big star in the US. And the original Office was a huge part of that, it's what got him attention and plaudits from Hollywood. I've only watched a few US Office episodes and it seemed like boring American sitcom/soap mulch. Barely even recognisable as The Office, and devoid of that show's innovative use of social horror. I only saw a few to be fair, but they were just totally forgettable to me.
Also, the UK never needed a UK translation of Seinfeld of Friends or The Simpsons or South Park. It's only Americans who need translation from English into English, due to their severe cultural self-absorption and arrogant ignorance of Britain, which is the country their country copied, they ripped it off in fact and rebranded it as the USA. They stopped obeying the English laws, but the chains and bindings of the English language were too deep and intricate for them to extricate themselves from. And so they are forever enslaved, by their tongues, to Mother England.

Maybe Valerie looks older in the US pilot because the age of consent there is 18 rather than 16 in the UK. I find that in the US that even 18 is considered very young to be talking about sex so the fact she looks more like early 20s is probably due to this. It's most likely just a cultural difference rather than an oversight on casting.

Man great work! I remember reading about this second pilot and just assumed it was lost knowledge, like how the pharaohs built the pyramids. I wonder if someone tied to the production of this has a complete copy somewhere? Hopefully seeing this will urge someone to leak it. Its definitely an improvement over the original pilot, returning to the pov style and the relatively unknown cast make it far more likeable. But the jokes don't really land and there's a seriously lack of chemistry between Jeremy and Mark. Kind of shows just how important an established comedy duo is to the interplay between the two. The fact that it was never made into a series says a lot. British humour doesn't translate and vice versa. If you are going to remake a concept for your country, it needs to be overhauled. Friends works as an American show but it could not have been remade in Britain. Yet Coupling followed the same basic concept and was utterly brilliant.

I'm amazed no one has countered with
      dah - The Office....
it's virtually one of the few ok translations of Brit humour,
but even that went on way too long, there's precious little else though.

Good analysis, especially considering how little footage you have, and how hard it was to get in the first place. I am admittedly intrigued about this version of the show, it is a heck of lot better than the 2005 pilot as you say, so would be interesting to see how it plays out.

American humour just isn't the same, the success of peep show comes from the sarcasm and down trodden nature of British humour. Like peep show is almost always humdrum, that's what makes it so relatable.

Thanks for the research! As an American who loved the original... why is an American version necessary? Was there really that much in the original that was different than American life? I shouldn't complain about bonus Peep Show (and it worked for the Office), but the whole point is the dry internal monologue and I just don't know if most Americans enjoy that.
