Inspired or not (that's a matter of opinion in many cases) this is not your regular "Let's write another song" recipe. For example, the "Oh shit I got this crazy idea" moment, is a moment of inspiration that comes from the writing process in your occasion, and from your world class bandmates as well when you are jamming like DT. Even your drum programming or a note you hit with your keyboards might spike inspiration. People need to realize that this comes from YEARS of pushing your skills to the limit both physically (technique) and mentally (theory etc) and plus years of experience writing, recording, producing music and playing with other musicians of similar skill. Not anyone can sit like that in one morning and write something like this for fun no matter how easy you make it look cause you are a world class Musician. Maradona's dribbling might look easy to some, until they have a ball in their feet. "Recepied" or not,not everybody can do it. Ok,back to my practice now. Awesome video B(r)ob.
Plain and simple answer....genius album from genius musicians. This album, compared to the others, is about ˝less is more˝ concept...It can be compared to their best album - Images and Words. Its intense but very melodic. Mixture of old and new sounds. My favourite piece on this album is Sleeping Giant. It begins with slow tempo piano notes, then guitar and hammonds came in, rhythm is developing on speed and then suddenly.... that mixture of different tempos between guitar and slow piano notes appears...So dramatic. And then Labries voice, reminds me of Images days. Very melodic....LIke James said...hole DT sound is in that song. 8 String guitars are so powerful, bass line is well defined, drumming technical and so many different piano sounds that adds that atmosphere to the songs. Amazing album from beginning till the end. And Petruccis solos...that melodic fusion mesa boogie sound. And production on that album is first class. You can´t do such an amazing album on some generator. You can do DT like song on generator but not DT song. Thats why is so many DT clones out there and only one Dream Theater..the best prog metal band ever.
I'll disagree with the "less is more" concept of this particular album, but I will agree that if YOU like it and put it next to Images & Words then you are one happy and satisfied DT fan, and this is only a great feeling to have!
I was a big DT fan years ago. But have been listening to only modern, free and avantgarde jazz for the last 15 years. I bought the New album and actually really like it. Myung is My favorit member and the production serves him well. I love "Images and words" + "metropolis part 2" and especially "A change of season" 😊
Apparently, it doesn't take a DT fan to realize they have been staying in their comfort zone for so many years. Either they lost their magic at some point in their career or they chose to be this way for some reason. Perhaps these types of "safe songs" suit band members' mutual interests the best in reality. Anyways, I still enjoy listening to their good songs from the past. One of the best prog metal bands existed.

laughed out loud. The new album has a few interesting moments mixed in with a lot of non-interesting ones. My impression of the album is 90% Dream Theater Song Generator (TM) and 10% inspiration
oh we would need 4 pages to analyze it, so far I just have it playing on the background, there are some good moments here and there, there's a LOT of jamming, and there are a lot of ideas I've heard before from DT, so I would just say that "it's just another DT album".I would barely put it above "The Astonishing" which at least had some good songs and an artistic approach due to the nature of its concept. Wish I could be thrilled but, I'm not. Bare in mind I got a DT tattoo on my arm and I also loved their last record,so I'm an easy to please fan I would say.
@@soundsymmetrystudioGR they also lately almost on all songs use the same verse riff and there are too many unneccesary parts. There are many good parts, but much more filler parts so it ruins it on the whole for me. It's the first dt album that i think won't have any future classics
First of all: this is a great musician who knows what he talks about. Secondly: the new DT-album is everything else but uninspired, it‘s one of the best released DT-albums ever released. And there are only two opinions about music: mine and the wrong ones. That‘s it! 😜
Once people realize that there is that... "other" opinion and they should respect it, the world would be a better place. But then there would be no social media beef, dammit, boring?!
They need to fuckin fire LaBrie. his vocals lived up to the band in 1992 but even on awake is voice was way too raspy, and after that it was nasal and shit most of the time
First, you are no doubt a talented musician. To be able to come up with that bit is something applaudable. I also believe you are a fan of DT. A disappointed fan. As for the 15th studio album. It's a grower, and damn it requires more listens. Same as you, I was at a similar view towards the album. There are a few moments, but nothing sticks. Colorless. That's what I thought. After 5 or so spins, colors start showing on a couple of tracks. First, it was Transcending Time probably because it was the easiest to follow and of course it became my favorite song for a couple or more days. I'd always start the album with that song. But now my favorite track is what anyone would ask for a DT song - Sleeping Giant. Great melody - same is true to the whole album, but the greatest melody-wise is Sleeping Giant at least for me. Beautiful Choruses. Melodies are memorable that even my 6 yo son who hates metal could be heard humming choruses and sections of Sleeping Giant, Awaken the Master, The Alien, Invisible Monster and Answering the Call. This album, I could have put it below DOT and ADTOE but it grew on me that I think it is among the top DT albums such as I&W, Awake, SFAM & SDOIT.
I "liked" your comment because it's not a "f*ck off you are jealous of DT" one, I'm so BEYOND that 🙂 I'm really glad that people DO LIKE the album. I won't say I "despise" or "hate" it, it's just that ridiculous and childish to say. It's just that it doesn't meet my own standards as both a listener AND a musician. I became a pro keyboard player because of them. I stretched my imagination on songwriting (got 5 instrumental solo albums!) because of them, and learned a sh*tload of music from them like Marillion,Rush, Kansas, ELP, u name it. For me DT were always opening "escape" doors to music. They were stretching the boundaries of Metal. At some point, FOR ME(and some other thousands of people from what I see) they just stopped doing it. And being a fan since 1993 with a DT tattoo on my arm, I literally drool over every new album they make to suck it and dive into it's world. And this time, the "door" opened and I saw a familiar room where I've been so many times for the last 10 years. I still listen to the album just cause I love the band, and I will travel to neighboring Bulgaria to see them live and it's gonna be a blast, it's just that DT are not pioneers anymore and it's kinda like I don't have anyone else to look up to like I used to do. Believe me, if you enjoy the album DO IT with all your heart and I wish this happens for me too.
@@soundsymmetrystudioGR What did you think of S2N? Personally, so far, my expectations for it were kind of high (view album) and I feel like they fell short. I thought View (the song) was pretty good and is so far what I would consider the best piece of the album. So yeah, I don't know, maybe I will come to appreciate and like the album more over time, but my initial impression was that DoT felt more interesting. I certainly, certainly enjoyed LTE3 more so in terms of releases so far this year.
@@ryanknight199 Ι actually LOVED DoT mainly because there were TIGHT SONGS. At least according to my simple "test": go at a random part of the song. Is there a feeling/vibe through the whole song? Is there like a certain "color" on it to make it stand out as a song and not a collection of parts" DoT had that element for the biggest part of it and then when it comes to "epic" songs, they f*cking NAILED it at Pale Blue Dot,at Wit's End etc. Also, S2N had that modern-Rush feeling to it,which I kinda relate a lot :-)
Same here. First listen it fell a bit flat a bit rehashed with some cool parts. Then with each listen it grew on me more and more. Really a great album. Fan since 1993 by the way.
Funny thing you said that because: 1)the intro riff is like EVERY single-string riff in the new album. 2)The verse chord progression that was randomly generated by the dice app, turns to be the present in Three songs in the new album and ELEVEN songs in the past 10 years, sorry bout that. 3)if the was labries voice on top of it, you would have bought it without a doubt 4) I don't want to... Copy DT. I have 6 solo albums and more than 70 albums discography. I know what the F*CK I'm talking about here. Cheers
@@soundsymmetrystudioGR Funny, we're talking about Dream Theater and not your compositions. Wrong where? In the pride of underestimating the work of others? Imitate any Korean twelve years old, but stand out for over thirty years around the world...oh my friend is for a very select group that you are not a part of.
@@soundsymmetrystudioGR Dude I heard some songs from your discography and to be honest I thought the sound was really cool! You and the other band members are good musicians and have some cool compositions. I apologize if I was rude in my argument. But, if you do the same thing that you did with Dream Theater with other bands, including the ones you compose, it will give the same result. I'll change my profession a little to try to explain my point better: If the best chef gives you the recipe for his best dish, any minimally trained cook will do the job, but the "feeling" will be different, the taste will be on the other, the sensation involved in the taste will have another experience. In music it's the same thing, if at the time we were playing we took covers of your songs, reverse-engineered them and built them using the same elements, it would be a song very similar to what you guys do but with a bad copy face, you know what did i mean? As much as the recipe is the same, it doesn't take away from the composers the geneality of creating something from scratch. I was listening to Arch Enemy's new work now, man it's much more of the same, the riffs, the melodies, the inversions, the harmonic field. The vocal then, wow, sounds like CRTL C + CRLT V. Maybe, in the video, that's what you wanted to get to, that sometimes songs are "recycled". But man, be honest, which band doesn't do that? Changing the sound too much and no longer being palatable to fans and risky. Another thing we must remember is that to get to the status that Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Metellica have reached is not just randomly putting notes into a computer program as if it were an algorithm. I agree that there is a "burnout" in some bands, but even in them there is something that doesn't replicate, the secret element that goes into the seasoning of a great boss, feeling.
for decades i was a DT fun until MP left so i did realized that i was really a MP fan.Maybe JP got to do some changes in the band ... I bought the DT album only to enjoy a "Rush" song (Transcending Time) :)

I'm definitely with you on this one!
laughed out loud.
The new album has a few interesting moments mixed in with a lot of non-interesting ones.
My impression of the album is 90% Dream Theater Song Generator (TM) and 10% inspiration
TOOl μόνο...DT μέχρι FII (falling...) p
Bob, I would like to ask what your thoughts on the new DT album actually are?
oh we would need 4 pages to analyze it, so far I just have it playing on the background, there are some good moments here and there, there's a LOT of jamming, and there are a lot of ideas I've heard before from DT, so I would just say that "it's just another DT album".I would barely put it above "The Astonishing" which at least had some good songs and an artistic approach due to the nature of its concept.
The video got me bad man lol
Bob... You know you are sick man...the only guy can write a prog song just for fun... Love from Antitheta Prosima
broo, what?? are you a wizard? that's dope!
Bob, what a great way to analyze this kind of thing. It's not fair because you're already a great musician, but you're making a statement here.
@@soundsymmetrystudioGR of course, I respect other opinions. I just forgot to put that smiley after „That‘s it“. Now I put it there! 😉
This is more like how my wife would tell me that she both lost her job AND joined Dream Theater. XD
hahahaha, but then it will add an extra 7/8...which is GREAT!
They need to fuckin fire LaBrie. his vocals lived up to the band in 1992 but even on awake is voice was way too raspy, and after that it was nasal and shit most of the time
Great video, pretty sure everyone’s dream is just to be able to whip up a killer song in their basement!
interesting point of view Bob! it can be possible from someone who know DT very well!
Great video Bob, entertaining and educative!
Πολυ καλο κομματι!
I "liked" your comment because it's not a "f*ck off you are jealous of DT" one, I'm so BEYOND that 🙂
I'm really glad that people DO LIKE the album.
Is there like a certain "color" on it to make it stand out as a song and not a collection of parts"
DoT had that element for the biggest part of it and then when it comes to "epic" songs, they f*cking NAILED it at Pale Blue Dot,at Wit's End etc.
Also, S2N had that modern-Rush feeling to it,which I kinda relate a lot :-)
@@soundsymmetrystudioGR Very cool. I was a big fan of At Wit's End myself. Thanks for replying :)
Same here. First listen it fell a bit flat a bit rehashed with some cool parts. Then with each listen it grew on me more and more. Really a great album. Fan since 1993 by the way.
You made me believe that I can write a Dream Theater song....Damn...
This song was like the guys who try to imitate Dream Theater and can't! hahahaha
Funny thing you said that because:
1)the intro riff is like EVERY single-string riff in the new album.
2)The verse chord progression that was randomly generated by the dice app, turns to be the present in Three songs in the new album and ELEVEN songs in the past 10 years, sorry bout that.
3)if the was labries voice on top of it, you would have bought it without a doubt
4) I don't want to... Copy DT. I have 6 solo albums and more than 70 albums discography. I know what the F*CK I'm talking about here. Cheers
@@soundsymmetrystudioGR Funny, we're talking about Dream Theater and not your compositions. Wrong where? In the pride of underestimating the work of others? Dude I heard some songs from your discography and to be honest I thought the sound was really cool!
What’s the point of your video? I don’t get it.
for decades i was a DT fun until MP left so i did realized that i was really a MP fan.Maybe JP got to do some changes in the band ... I bought the DT album only to enjoy a "Rush" song (Transcending Time) :)
Ι never thought it like that, but I guess I was a MP fan more than anything! Oh, and a HUGE Kevin Moore fan as well....
@@soundsymmetrystudioGR Yes! Kevin Moore! What a song-writer!
Lol. Your dt song generator sounds more inspired than dt's latest album.
Perhaps, but isn't it genius if they did that? 😃
