Rick is an old radio buddy of mine... His passion for trains ranks right up there with his grandkids.. The experience of actually controlling a locomotive is a railfans dream and I am extremely jealous..
Hey Cliff! This was at Monticello Railroad Museum in Monticello, IL where they offer a program called Throttle time. I think now it's run $150 and you get 30 min training and 30 min run time, all supervised. The video is an overview of that one hour. It was worth the money just to ride in the cab, much less run it! Thanks for the kind words.
I'm so glad you guys did this for him and shared it with everyone. I've delivered train cabs and parts, but this would be so cool to experience. I was really happy to watch!
Good job Rick I was very happy to see you smiling makes me happy when people are happy and not bad for an older age for you most train jobs won't allow older people but you're one very lucky guy
RODNEY SCHELLS no it’s not really, at least not today. Maybe years ago. The responsibility is enormous.I was a conductor for years, it’s a pressure cooker, lots of paperwork, deadlines, time schedules, lots of rules, lots of noise. Difficult as shit trying to hear dispatchers, yard personnel ,track workers over engine noise on the radios and phones onsqueaky squeally engines. Today every move, every conversation is recorded in the loco. Video and audio cams everywhere. Not fun at all most of the time you sit waiting at triple reds
I think I've been on that engine at one time"radio tech with CNR".The rack-mount radio was down in the hold in front. It got pretty hot in the summertime.
That sure looked like fun! I got an opportunity to run an 80 ton GE switcher for a few minutes last month. Old air throttle, FAR simpler control stand than this beauty here. But it was a childhood dream come true.

You are right, the locomotive is probably from the mid-to-late 1940s & the passenger cars are probably from the early 1930s.
That 's an 1850 hp, Canadian National Alco/MLW FPA4. They were built in 1958.
I’m so jeally!
Good job. Now try it on a 300 car 18,000 ft 20,000 ton stack train. Lol. Little different experience.
