‘To Cut A Long Story Short’ is when I first heard of them. Instantly sold me to their sound in that era and Tony’s vocals are perfect. 👌🏼
Spandau Ballet were contemporaries of Duran Duran trading blows in the UK charts like the Beatles and the Stones. Another big song of theirs was ‘ Gold’ which I’m sure you will also find that you have heard.
Blows my mind that anyone hasn't heard this one a million times. It's as familiar to me as "Happy Birthday". It was THE slow dance song at every nightclub I went to in the 80s.
They have other great songs like the beautiful ballad "Through The Barricades" and the amazing "Gold"
One of my favorite songs from the 80’s, I usually play this alongside with Everybody wants to rule the world.
Who knew that within 2 years time, they'd go from this to being featured in Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and performing at Live Aid 1985.
If you want a more energetic mood shift from them I’d recommend “Chant No. 1 (I Don’t Need This Pressure On)” as your next listen
This is the song responsible for raising the English birth rate, 9 months after it's release! Peace & Love.
"Ballet Boomers" 😅
Hi Justin, I was and still I am a prog rock and hard rock listener but in the second half of '80s I enjoyed a couple of their albums and saw them live in my hometown and they played a pretty decent gig, most of the crowd was formed by girls and that was also a reason to go and see them.
True was very commercial but for me their best stuff was 1980/81 with tracks like Chant no.1, The freeze, Musclebound, Paint me down and To Cut a long story short. Also Instinction from 1982.
Spandau Ballet didn't start as a slick soul band. For the first couple of years they were part of the "New Romantic" movement, which was based around a few very exclusive London nightclubs and mainly influenced by Bowie and electronic Euro-disco. You could check out Spandau's "To cut a long story short" or "Chant no.1" for an idea of their early sound.
A lot of 9th and 7th chords give this track a definite flavor.
Back when this was a hit, it was an cue to hit the off switch if I ever heard it beginning. I can tolerate it now, and admire the craft. On the one hand, I never liked the band, but on the other, I think Tony Hadley has got one of the best voices I've ever heard.
Wow! Talk about some mixed feelings!🤔
@@MissAstorDancer True.
Hard to believe this tune is on the cusp of turning 40…
Damn can I sing this good 37 years of practice
This is an 80s classic. Check out the origin of the band's name.
Yeah, I think if Robert Elms knew the literal meaning when he saw it written on a toilet wall in Berlin, he may not have suggested it to them but they weren’t to know. But Spandau Ballet does sound way better than some of the previous names they went under like Roots, The Cut, The Makers or Gentry.
If you're looking for the popular ones, "Gold" is definitely more uptempo. Amazing video too. "Chant no 1" is a great view into more funky side of the same band.
Sister song to this is "Captain of her Heart" by Double (pronounced doo-blay).
Ahhh yes. Very early in my roller rink days. This and "Promises Promises" from Naked Eyes. And the entire Footloose Soundtrack. Instantly sets a mood.
Spandau Ballet's True album is one of the first vinyls I got. Love their huge hit "True" but my favorite is "Gold" from the same album. Spandau Ballet started as a New Wave band along with Duran Duran on the late 70s. Fans of each band were always competing on who was better. Spandau Ballet has great songs but I stayed with Duran2 after the 80s. Watch the "Do they know its Christmas" music video to see a bunch of 80s pop stars singing together. The song that started 'Live Aid'.
A really great pop band from the 80's .....
Songwriter Gary Kemp wrote this about his feelings for Claire Grogan the singer with Scottish band Altered Images.
This brings me back to my teenage years.
This got so much airplay at the time. And it still holds up.
The PM what?
You need to check out "To Cut A Long Story Short" to hear where they came from... a band connected to New Romantic movement's / New Wave synth laced pop / rock.
Hadn't heard that for a long time - thanks for the little trip back in time to the 80s. 😉
And while we're there, I have more song suggestions for you, all classics from that time:
Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax
Godley & Creme - Cry (great music video as well!)
Tears For Fears - Mad World
The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Marillion - Kayleigh
Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me
Kim Wilde - Kids In America
and last but not least a track from Germany:
Propaganda - Dr. Mabuse
l'd be happy about your reaction to one or the other song. ☺️
A great selection of songs. I don't know the Marillion one, but the others are classics
Check their other hit, Gold, for more upbeat tunage.
Change of subject:
If you also like to make a musical "rock-pop trip to Scotland", I'd suggest these bands/artists:
Biffy Clyro-The Captain
Biffy Clyro - Many Of Horrors
KT Tunstall - Black Horse And The Cherry Tree
Texas - I Don't Want A Lover
Texas - Say What You Want
Simple Minds - Alive And Kicking
Amy Macdonald -Mr Rock & Roll
Amy Macdonald - This Is The Life
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
Franz Ferdinand - (The Dark Of) The Matinée
Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved
You've probably heard one or the other of these names...
I appreciate how you always dive into the lyrics. I never actually paid attention to them on this one if I'm being honest, and they're actually pretty darn good.
send this song into space so the aliens can see how sweet life can be on earth..a classic for the ages..
This one came out when I was a kid and P.M. Dawn's song came out when I was in high school. It was still hard for me not to want to sing the original SB hook when listening PM Dawn.
The song, 'I'll Fly For You' is great.
I'll fly for you is a good 1 as well
I thought I had never heard of this... until I heard the music : )
there are several 80's hits that were transformed into 90's hip hop. Such as 'Just the way it is' & 'I can't go for that'
Great song ✌️
Imagine it's the middle of 80's and you're with a girl on a party, this song starts playing and you hug each other and dance. Do you want it to end after just 3 minutes? No, you want the whole 6.
Lol, the first time I heard the PM Dawn song I was like "MAAAN, they stole that shiz from Spandau Ballet!" haha.
I recently found out that the lead singer, Tony Hadley, is 6 feet 5. I always thought he was tall but not that tall.
Whereas James Dean Bradfield, guitarist and voice of Manic Street Preachers is About 5 foot 6 and a half . Wotkind of würld is it where JP has heard True
But not
Motorcycle Emptiness
🧐
This is the height of ignorance.
@@davidcopson5800 to the depths of disillusionment with a singalong chorus wouldn’t u agree? 😊have a happy trawl of the megahertz on life’s musical radio fellow human being! Nadolig Llawen🤙
Chant No. 1, for a totally different vibe from them!
I hope Justin would consider checking out this reunion live performance by Spandau Ballet of Chant No 1 and Gold on the Jonathan Ross TV Show. Consider that this band appeared around the same time as Duran Duran, rather than Japan...
ua-cam.com/video/jF8vT-yOl7c/v-deo.html
Absolutely. Great track
Or "To Cut A Long Story Short"
I think an artist you would find a lot of enjoyment from is George Michael. Not only was he an amazing singer but also, a great songwriter. I'm sure you have already heard a song or two of his (solo or Wham!), but he has such a consistently great catalogue that is oftentimes shamefully overlooked.
Very nice classic. The sax moment remind me somewhat of Roxy music. The singing is balm for my soul
Written about Claire Grogan I believe (Altered Images)
You should react to "only when you leave" ... live aid version would be great to see them live
An eighties pop/soul classic, huge on both sides of the Atlantic along with its parent album and the other big hit ‘Gold’ which was more upbeat. They started out though as a New Romantic band, drawing on Bowie as an influence. By the time this came out they’d adopted a poppier, more soulful sound. Tony Hadley has a rich, warm voice which really helps sell this. My wife took me along to an eighties night about 15 years ago where Hadley was performing with Martin Fry and ABC. Hadley has a really powerful voice. Back in the eighties, young pop fans were divided, they were either Duranies or Spandau Ballet fans, a lot of rivalry between the two! The *big* number for slow dances back then for sure. Nice tribute to Marvin Gaye in the lyrics too. He’d died not long before this song came out, if I recall correctly.
Blink and you’ll miss it but Tony Hadley is in the PM Dawn video near the end.
In PM Dawn's video for their song, Spandau Ballet's lead singer shows up in the last 30 seconds or so.
HEY JP, I dont know if this was covered earlier in the posts, but you covered Altered Images a day or so ago, and this song written by Gary Kemp about Claire Grogan whom he was having a secret affair with, wow.
Perfect connection lol!
Too smooth and slicked back to be interesting for me.
It's like if you took an interesting song from the 80s, and then filed the corners down. And then took finer and finer sandpaper to the whole thing, and then gave it a lacquer finish that has the word "Satin" somewhere on the tin because the song is still catching on people's perceptions too much.
🤣 A perfect description if I ever heard one and yet I still like this song. It's most definitely not my usual taste, but I guess on the rare occasion I enjoy songs with this level of smooth cheesiness.
@@ijustneedmyself Yeah, I feel it's not BAD bad, it's just perhaps a little over-polished, you know?
@@AriadneJC For sure!
@@AriadneJC so polished I could shave by it.
This is among their softer tracks. Some of their more upbeat hit singles are Gold, Instinction, Paint Me Down, Chant Number One, Communication, Lifelines, Muscle Bound etc. A great band with quite a varied output. Their first big hit was To Cut A Long Story Short, a song about being a young male prostitute, if I'm reading it right.
Love it! Justin, could you please Rick Roll us? I'd love to see a reaction to "Never Gonna Give You Up," another 80's classic that a Millennial may not have heard in whole.
Lol! Funny idea, but that one I actually know :)
Huge hit. Classic. “Only When You Leave”, “Gold”, “To Cut A Long Story Short” are my faves. This album is well done, not a huge fan of the production, but as a long player it’s great. No filler.
I think I prefer PM Dawn's song, but they're both very catchy. By the way, Tony Hadley, the lead singer of Spandau Ballet appears briefly in the music video for Set Adrift on Memory Bliss.
Although I've always like their hits, I was never into Spandau Ballet. But I think that their stuff is decent, well-produced pop. And there's nothing wrong with that IMO.
Gold, Instinction, Chant Number One, The Freeze, Glow, Communication, Lifeline, Muscle Bound, To Cut A Long Story Short, Only When You Leave, Through the Barricades, She Loved Like Diamond.... There, I've done your research for you.
Nuggets alert love it love you
A good song by them was "Communication", more upbeat than "True".
Ididnt know the prime minister of Canada also sung for this band lol
Always hoped you would react to a PM Dawn track - especially something like 'Paper Doll ' or 'Reality Used to be a Friend of Mine ' - now I know for sure why you havent - guessed it was 50/50 chance you were already familiar with them
You are overdue to react to The Fixx , I believe - lot of tracks to pick from - I would start with ' Red Skies at Night ' or ' Saved by Zero '
I love your reactions Just. Can I recommend some songs? I'm 50.
Lucky to be a boomber.
Responsible for two million hard-ons at the school disco back in the day (at least that's what these creatures of the flesh say. I was probably reading)
Definitely for a different and vastly more impressive sound, try Chant no.1 or To Cut a long story short... I think you'll be buzzin after you hear those tracks.
“I’ll fly 4 u”. Something about *that* song which surpasses every other SB hit. Maybe “through the barricades” could give it a run for it’s money but only if you liked Cod SophistiMetal Pop.
JP, you’ve veered on to a dodgy mainstream course by playin this one. Only one antidote! Yes its Time: Let’s check out de pop nephews of Steely Dan demselves, China Crisis. Wow look! There’s “Wake Up ( king in a Catholic Style)” by the unheralded early kings of Liverpudlian ethno-synth tapestries.
Tasty.
You Tube reactor Harribest does that a lot, "This riff is from that Kanye song!" I don't like when later "artists" steal a sound/chord sequence/riff from an older, more creative artist.
It's been going on for centuries. Good artists borrow, great artists steal.
@@floorticket and shit "artists" rip off a classic line them mumble over the top for their millions.
I knew the song, I just didn't know the band or song name. Very chill. Hmmmm.... time for a cocktail or a nice glass of chardonnay. Next I expect some cuts from "Twin sons of different mother". Ubiquitous music from bands you never know the names of.
Hey Maraud. I mentioned you in a comment on the Invisible Touch reaction. How cold is it in your neck of the woods?
My wife and My wedding song September 21 1985
Nice!
The song is....fine. But you could not escape it. I think everyone on Earth has heard it at least once.
Hi x please can u react to Blue Monday by New Order x
Seconded!
Good call, rather than this sugary crap.
if Spandau Ballet, why not "Cabaret Voltaire" ?
It was a good song back in the 80s but its on every film, advert, tv show. Total overkill.
Tell me about it. 🙄
Basically…to begin with they were uber-pretentious New Romantics with their album Journeys To Glory, and lots of songs with one-word titles. The second album, Diamonds, was utter cack and didn’t sell, so for 3rd lp True, they softened up, went all gooey and scored their big hits. After that it was more (and more) of the same with diminishing returns until they broke up in acrimony (moaning over royalties…basically Gary Kemp took all the dosh and the others got peeved about it).
A minor band at best, with no real artistic importance in the grand scheme of things.
No doubt i’ll be buried by replies from annoyed Spand’s fans 😁
frankly, a wonderful concise summary of their career - as effective as the dreamy backing vocals on offer here, which for some reason (and I know exactly which one ), make me think of the Wedding Singer, Billy Idol and Drew. Why cough, do I find it cough hard to cough write the cough next line, cue cod funk guitar and sax solo which has never sounded so sugary than on Just JP. Somehow the two should never have met and now the axis of Reality has tilted back to wot it was b4 2016
See, kids? No matter how glib, insipid, and ultimately worthless an opinion is, it can still get upvotes if offered with enough misplaced authority.

I think this would pair well with Prefab Sprout...

Have a lovely restful beneficial holiday City Boy Man. I’ll get back to u with my CB assignment. 🌸🏴🇺🇸
It was a nice popular hit song when I listened to it in the '80's, but if I heard it on the radio today, I would change the station. So don't feel badly that you can't separate it from the '90's song that sampled it.
Spandau Ballet were one of dozens of 80s artists shamefully ripping off the pure works of 90s/2000s rap stars.😛
🤭
If you want something less smooth ... to ... no, no ... just try *Skunk Anansie - Charlie Big Potato* ua-cam.com/video/9E9-L9_S3V0/v-deo.html
She sings pretty good. Maybe I'll give that as the reason to listen. No need for a Spandau Ballet based reason.
*Voivod* sometimes goes a bit new romantic - in a Voivod way (i.e. as far over to that side as a vampire Space overlord can go). Really. Listen to the early part of *Lost Machine* and you'll hear it clear as ... something industrial that seems to want to eat you, I suppose ... ua-cam.com/video/20o3IfvVpgk/v-deo.html
Perfect recommendation, sir, made more perfect (is that even possible?) by the context in which it is being made.

Anyway, here's *Skinflint - Mask of the Dead* ua-cam.com/video/IcPLcjnS2iM/v-deo.html (Just to overdo this again.) From Botswana. It's heavy metal.
An 80s highlight for sure. The monster hit single was a couple minutes shorter. I just checked out PM Dawn for the first time. Nice texture and use of this record, but there's nothing like the original of course.
Simple sappy stuff from the 80's. A more upbeat hit they had was "Gold". Their band name is more interesting than their songs. To me they're more like Blandau Ballet.
Gold was better. Sort of a Bond theme feel.
For me even their band name sucks and moreover its origin is frankly weird ! 🙄
@A. K. Pretentious Blitz kids! Who would have thought the writer of this song would be doing his best Syd Barrett impression right now?
Simple and sappy? this is a brilliant pop song
@@RedDevil_Joe A pop song yes. Brilliant?? Doesn't even come close to, let's say: Art of Noise - "Moments in Love" or Frankie Goes to Hollywood - "Power of Love" or even Godley and Creme - "Cry"
You’d never believe that guitarist (and writer of this slush) Gary Kemp, now plays with Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets 🙄
Nothing better to do then, so you listened anyway.
@@barriehull7076 i listened to jp’s comments. I heard the track enough times in 1983, when it was unavoidable.
