I love how the underside of the piece, which would likely never be seen, is just as detailed as the top.
This was made by Unno Shomin who was one of the Imperial Household Artists in Japan in 19th century. This type of sea turtle is a symbol of longevity. it is a very auspicious object. Imperial Household Artist is equivalent of Living National Treasure today.
It should be in Japan where it is revered and treasured.

This is war plunder and should be repatriated. The dude's father was a thief
@@tommypetraglia4688 While it is possible. We don't have any evidence of this so this type of speculation is inappropriate.
It could be that someone else stole it and his father actually did win it from that person in the game. We don't know.
Thank you
@@tommypetraglia4688 He said he won it in a card game. Entirely plausible. Bad idea to call someone a thief when you have no information.
Lark Mason is by far my favorite expert on the Road Show. I am always entertained, informed, and often astounded by his appraisals.
The level of detail in that piece is astounding.
This piece of art is so mesmerizing and beautiful that i could look at it for hours!
I rarely if ever feel the desire to own the object being appraised but in this case, I wish I could hold and touch it and have it in my house. It's that special.
Clearly done by an absolute master for the wealthiest of Japanese. No time constraints, materials, or expenses spared on this beautiful item. It surely is one of the finest works of its kind ever made. It only gets better, the more you inspect it.
I would buy it in a second if I had the money. I just love it.
I seriously doubt you'd get it for the estimated price if it's the work of an imperial artist as someone else suggested...
@@dielaughing73 How about at a yard sale? 😂. Just kidding I love it!!
@@danacaro-herman3530 wouldn't that be something
I have a feeling that "won it in a card game" was a euphemism for "swiped it during the occupation." :-(
Absolutely stunning piece!
the work itself is amazing, look at those details...and then is silver and gold.
The detail alone is astonishing.
Beautiful piece!!
One thing that makes me take a deep breath and sigh, it definitely has some magical significance, wish I had one, thanks for sharing this is really something very precious. Be blessed.
It is incredible .... absolutely gorgeous!
I would love to own that beauty...
Very beautiful item.
That was a master piece from almost all of it's aspects 🤔
I LOVE tortoises. I would have fought for this so hard.
Beautiful piece... Love it and would dream of finding a piece like this at a estate sale or auction... 👍💕🔥😷
If I owned that i would never sell it.... The workmanship in the piece is so lifelike it's epic...
What a beautiful sculpture
I collect turtles...I wish I had this one.Beautiful!
I think this would have been worth more than 40 thousand dollars given how much some other articles sell for.
Whew.. most definitely could see myself owing this beauty. Not sure where I'd get the money.. but one can dream.
How can he appraise this item without looking up the name of the maker.
He was one of the 79 craftsmen that were named by the imperial family at the time.
In Japan, it would at least value $100,000
@1manuscriptman In the video he said he hadn't yet looked up the artist, I'm sure he realized this was worth more when he looked it up. At 1:51 they even show the name of the artist.
This is a TV show. They have to look up and appraise many items in a short period.
They are going to have to skip out on the details sometimes which is why their estimates are often on the conservative side.
It's a beautiful piece, I'd say the $20-30K quote is right on.
we've been waiting for your validation of the appraisal ... Lark Mason only has a lousy lifetime working with Asian arts, he doesn't have a PhD ferchrissakes!!
I got some road signs in the garage that I “Won in a card game”
I havent got to valuation yet, but this is GORGEOUS why would someone hide it unseen in an attic!
Cause he stole it from Japan.
@@captainnemo2150 We get it, you think he stole it from Japan. Does it need to be brought up on unrelated comments?
@@Wafflinson
It absolutely needs to be discussed. This is war plunder of a national treasure.
The man's father was a thief and (wink wink nod nod) lived a lie the rest of his life.
AR had a duty to call the state department and see it was repatriated
"won it in a card game"....yea ...right...
oh dude.. lol
lol who knows tho ey ;) maybe he’s telling the truth
To the victor goes the spoils, right? 😁
Yes I believe the game they were playing was called "war"...
He stole it from some little poor Japanese.
This is a beautiful creation but as has been said elsewhere: Not a tortoise, but a turtle. Specifically the minogame turtle (the creature from Japanese folklore). If the seaweed wasn't clue enough just look at the feet - little claws with webbing in between, just like a land turtle.
Also yeah, way undervalued. I think once Lark looked up the maker and found he was an imperial artisan he would revise this value
magnificent
I would love to have this beauty!
Insure it!
Wow utterly beautiful I wouldn’t sell it
FANTASTIC❤️❤️❤️
It’s almost like they used a real turtle for a mold 🙃
Beautiful
Biologist here - those are limpets, not barnacles. But still very cool.
Looted !
My favorite euphemisms for my ancestors stole the object: 1. Won in card game 2. Given to housekeeper by wealthy employer 3. Grandpa dug it up while plowing 4. Simply found it and everyone's favorite 5. Mama took care of a rich old man and as a token of his gratitude, he "gave" her this.
looks more like a turtle... hence the seaweed. tortoise is a land animal
The amount of detail just on the underbelly is ridiculous
The origins of Wartortle.
When this show. Please
How gorgeous is that?
WWII "won it in a cardgame" yeah right probably more like stole it at gunpoint 😏.... Absolutely stunning piece.
Not one Tortoise and the Hare joke…
Id give ya a buck fiddy for it
Not a tortoise. It is a Minogame turtle.
Turtle, not tortoise.
It's so cute. Hahaha.
Also , it’s a turtle
NOT a tortoise. It’s an aquatic turtle.
"Won it in a card game back in WWII...." yeah okay, dad.
Won it in a Bingo Game, suckers.
"won in a card game" lol yeah right. more like war bounty stolen from a Japanese museum or home.
Well he never specified that the card game didn't take place in the foyer of a museum with all the exhibits stacked up dragon hoarde style.
They got what was coming to them.
@@janepoultney5207 You do realize that the Japanese did worse in China, right? Or are you so blinded by your unhealthy obsession with a sexist, racist, far right culture to understand that?
Or... he won it in a card game
Jumping to conclusions
His grandfather “got it,” probably stole it haha
Not "ha ha" but war plunder.
This guy's father prbly lived a lie the rest of his life
So confused. Turtles are water loving, thus sea weed. Tortoises are land dwellers, deserts...etc. Why would a tortoise have sea weed on its back? However... I will take the cash value... thank you.
You are right to be confused, it IS a turtle, specifically the minogame turtle (which is the creature from Japanese folklore). You can even tell due to the accuracy of the sculpture when you look at the feet, little claws with webbing in between, just like a land turtle (sea turtles obviously have flippers).
That was my very first thought 💭.
I like turtles!
ok, so people do win all kinds of stuff at bets/games. But a solid silver figure of that size? That's a bit of a stretch. Unless it was two millionaires playing. You can't even mistake this turtle for anything but a piece of art.
"won it in a card game". ok sure. I bet occupying soldiers won all kinds of precious artifacts.
"Won it in a contest" Sure, Jan. He stole it.
I’m glad people like you aren’t in charge of anything important
Not a tortoise
War plunder of a national treasure.
The dude's father lived a lie the rest of his life.
The Roadshow had a duty to call the state department and see it was repatriated
@Tommy Petraglia // and your proof of your statement is where... ??? 🙄🤔
The japanese shouldnt have started a war if they didn't want to be plundered.
@@trevillyan5515 // 🤷🏼♀️
@Annie Fanny heard that!
Don't be a dullard. If the Japanese wanted to keep all their national treasures, they shouldn't have gambled them at Pearl Harbor.
kinda dirty to say it was won in a card game during the war.. who believes that.. call it for what it is
thats some jim james
