Coffee Spoon: Carved From Red Oak Then Finished With Ammonia Fumes
Вставка

- Watch as I carve this small coffee spoon from quarter sawn red oak. I finish the spoon using a process where you expose the wood to high strength ammonia, the fumes react with tannins in the wood and naturally darken the color.

@andy rawls even if you make ten spoons continuously in one video, we will be still watching till the end. that is the power of your wood work..
Enjoyed that. Really cool technique. I didn't know you could do that with ammonia.
My 4 year old girl loves your videos. We watch one every day. Her 3 favorites are the spoons. "Dad, can we watch The Wood Guy make a spoon tonight?!". She asked tonight: "Dad, do you think he'll ever make a fork?, I would love to see that"... So, I told her we'd try. Anyone else want to see a "fork build" video?
The tool that smoothes out any straight edges is by far my favorite, the process of the spoon going from a Minecraft spoon to a real one is amazing.
It's called a spokeshave. An awesome tool. I consider it a must-have for woodworkers.
Seeing all of the wood shavings of different colors and shapes made me think that you might be able to do something cool with them. I know there are a lot of youtubers that do resin projects and turn resin on lathes. I realize it would be getting away from the really pure woodworking motif, but a project of poured resin with chips in it (or any project with shavings) could be interesting.
Andy I like the look of this coffee spoon better than the first. Plus gouges are more fun than the drill press.
+verbnames thanks and very true!
I agree!
Beautiful work. I am constantly astounded by the myriad of ways humans can create beautiful spoons.
I find your videos to be relaxing and a good remedy for anxiety, thank you for what you do.
Love the chisel marks left in it.
I used to fix antiques with an old school guy. We used to work on a lot of very expensive pieces and some would need extensive repairs. I remember using amonia a few times to age a few pieces of wood so it would look original when a piece of wood was missing. We did French Polish on all the stuff. See a lot of people on line trying to mimic it, but it is a lot harder than what people are doing and teaching.
Then why don’t you explain the right technique ? Because I’ve seen so many people telling the exact same thing about every topic… but how strange, they never tell how they would do. I’m 100% sure that you and this were just trying to mimic my technic but you found out it was more difficult than you thought.
@@Stavroguine826 WTF is your problem? I never said anything about this guys technique or how he used ammonia. I only said I used ammonia like this too. I was talking about French Polish. I see a lot of people using bastardized versions of it online. I have pieces of furniture in museums that I repaired dating back to the 1790's. And to think I could or would explain the technique in a random comment is idiotic and not reasonable. And the play on words in your tag is cute, should have used an i instead of the middle e for sentiment.
First video I've watched and I'm hooked. I love the quietness. I might try it soon. Beautiful work.
You have my dream job. Making unique and awesome projects out of wood. Someday I will make furniture out of wood for a living. Hardwood floors until then.
I hope you do...best of luck to you!
Very cool project, I love that technique. I always thought it needed some kind of vaporiser setup or something equally crazy to work. I'll try it with spruce sometime soon, see if it does anything. Might spruce it up a bit at least (hehe).
Watching this in HD is miraculous.
What a beautiful set of tools
Nice work! Seems to be two schools of thought on spoon carving, bowl-first or bowl-last! I use to do bowls last but I think it’s easier to do them first. Make yourself a shaving horse to use with your drawknife and spokeshave, you’ll love how fast you can work. Love the spoon!
Amazing video! Really cool what you did with ammonia.
Incredibly enjoyable to watch, thanks Andy.
Why can't i get this video and that spoon in every new can of coffee? Very cool! I really enjoy your videos.
Man that is wicked! The way you used the ammonia!
I should be doing homework
Alejandro Solano I should be sleeping :P
Alejandro Solano 😂😂😂😂😂
You reminded me that I have homework due 2 morrow that is going to take forever
That's crazy color you got out of that amonia trick great work
great work, great editing , great videos and he even replies to the majority of the comments. very good youtuber.
You're right. In my opinion, this one looks a lot better than the other :)
I have the same hat! That’s why I clicked the video, but I stayed for the sweet content
Great job Andy I especially like the fuming.
Very cool man, I dont know how long it took for your spoon to darken but I have fumed oak in the past & if you covered the bowl with cling film it works fast. I love your vids keep them coming. Your a real Craftsman.
This was my favorite spoon video so far -- keep up the good work!
Wow, that ammonia darkening was really cool.
Nice tools and great skills
Love it.....keeps me calm.....
Enjoyed this a lot. Interesting technique with the ammonia.
That's one good looking spoon
practically an ASMR video with how well the audio is done. If that community finds you, prepare for plenty of extra views!
cool you decided to start taking footage of the behind the scenes so you can start showing them to us in a few weeks!
Nice color from the ammonia; that's why I watched the video. Try putting a cover over the bowl next time to catch the fumes, even a flat plate or a piece of cardboard would work. Thanks for video.
Great Vid!...(I) never thought about a spoon being a piece of "fine furniture", but you made it it look like that.... Fine work!
Best industry explanation spoon Thank you
That was amazing work! Great video.
Amazing work!! I really admire your wooden works
Beautiful! You’re an artist
Thanks for the video, great final product.
You are awesome andy your work is beyound perfection
That was cool thx for the vid Andy
Thanks for the video! I’m going to try my own design off of yours soon!
Wow. Learn something new everyday
You, my friend, are the Uri Geller of wood!
I would love to see how you sharpen your chisels, if they set full anything soon:)
That is really interesting, especially with the time lapse
Every time AR shoots the basketball I yell KOBE lol
i love this channel so much!!
Vinegar works as well, apply directly to the wood. I've also used steel wool dissolved into vinegar and applied to wood! But ammonia gives a great effect too!
Just plain old white vinegar wiped on like any oil? Does it have to be a tannin rich wood as well? I’ve only used stock finishes off the shelves, but am looking around at making/doing my own thanks to M&T podcast!
@@gregorymosher5008 Yes I've used white vinegar multiple times I've even tried, cider vinegar as well as malt vinegar. They all have different effects on different Woods, obviously the woods with a greater set of tannins do well. But I've also used white vinegar and black tea which also helps with darkening the wood. The black tea will release tannins into your vinegar and then help bring out the colour. I'm a big proponent of natural finishes.
really enjoy your videos man
Very cool. You should make a kuksa next!
Hi Andy, I want to do all the things you are doing right now when i get older, can you give me some advices
Great work
Every time I watch one of your videos, I have an almost uncontrollable urge to go sharpen a tool....
New favorite description: "Janitorial strength"
Nice design, I'm impressed that you finished it with a fuming treatment. I didn't think anyone even knew about that method anymore.
He's professional
Beautiful. ¿could you please make a show and tell on how to use a spoke shave? I can see you master spoke shaves. Thanks for sharing!
Nice video very very good 👍
Spain!!!!
ohh my god its so satisfying
That is awesome
ideas para vender y para la casa. saludos. col,
Hi my name is Rachel and I recently got into your channel. I love watching you work with wood. I was wondering how did you get into wood-making?
Make more spoons!
Nice
Lovely workshop.
I carve too and have a few tools, but I sure do like watching you work in your shop with all your various tools!
What was the double sided tool you used near the end?
Great spoon and neat ammonia technique.
Bless you!

I had to subscribe! 💗💗💗
Great videos, I found your channel from demolitionranch. :D
Nice video
Super
That’s good
Can you explain the use of ammonia? And is the spoon still considered “food safe” after this process?
Maybe next video of you making a shaving horse with a spoon mule attachment?
My back hates shaving horses...I just can't get it to cooperate when I use one.
Good videos
Hello, I have some oak branches that I found in the forest, can I use them or let them dry, because if I let them dry it becomes very hard, can you explain to me. Please
These videos help me sleep lowkey
I really want to start carving myself, but I just don't know what wood to carve with. Any ideas for a beginner? also good carving tool make?
good jub
spoon making ASMR :D
Coffee spoon translation for me:
Mashed potato spoon!
is it ok to use red oak from the home center stores instead of a sawmill? Plan on using some red oak s4s. not sure if its treated with anything, but i dont think so since it's a hardwood.
U are awesome..
Andy do you have a turning machine? I should like to watch wood turning video's.
Sorry for bad english
perfect...,
Love your work. What size Hirsch Gouge are you using? thanks
are the líquid um the reciepient? beautiful job
What did you use for chisels and spoke shaves? Great video, I love the look of the spoon.
Can you do a Baseball bat
Do a collaborative video with construction ranch aka off the ranch aka Matt carriker. I know it will be hard to do but like shoot some nail guns or something on demo ranch lol.
^thats how I found Andy, when he made the Texas signing board Matt has in the UA-camr apartment. They've been in a few videos together before and are good friends.
Yeah that's how I found him too. I just thought it would be fun to see another one.
You definitely need to make a "most satisfying" video
Dude, nice scoop, but how many tools did you use. Try carving out of green wood using an axe and knives instead. Much quicker and easier on the wallet in terms of tool investment. Craig
+Stone Woodcrafts thanks...I really want to start carving green wood like you mentioned. Obviously I didn't buy all these tools just to carve spoons. It's a side hobby from furniture making that I really enjoy!
Hi Andy, lol, I hear you bud, but we are all guilty of tool hoarding. Carving axes are my downfall lol. Looking forward to see your green wodworking Andy. Keep up the great work. Regards, Craig
@@AndyRawls As a green woodworker myself, I always like to watch people from other wood traditions making a spoon. Most of us are not totally 'pure' green woodworkers, and occasionally we have a nice piece of seasoned wood we want to carve. Oak is a great example being so appallingly tough to carve once it has begun to season. So to watch you (and others like Paul Sellers) tackle the job is very informative. Plus your video skills are superb. thank you for posting this.
I like your job very much. Is this your own work place? Are you working alone there? Is this your job or hobby? What are you really? What is the expense of your work place?
How long did it take to make?
Cool video!
Damn dude. The whole silent thing was kinda your like trademark and I really enjoyed it. As always still a great video
+Sean's Life Adventures yeah maybe the introduction was unnecessary...even my wife gave me a hard time for talking. Thanks for tuning in anyways.
satisfying
Just curious, but why do you use a draw knife instead of a spoke shave on the back of the spoon? Just faster? Nice work!
