Can you give a review of the Ally credit card? I use Ally for my high yield savings but I am very new to focusing on the benefits of using a credit card for the points. Thank you. Your videos have really helped me to chose which credit cards I want to start with.
I'm 30 years old and my metabolism is crazy fast.. i could eat 1.5k calories before sleep and still be starving in the morning. I don't think breakfast is for everyone, but I need it. Plus I work a labor intense job and then train jiu jitsu right after work and can't gain any weight
Merino wool socks are the only thing I buy while travelling internationally, because I walk and hike constantly. Memories of New Zealand, Lithuania, Guatemala, Alaska, etc. are always on my feet.
🎯 Love it. Sounds like the common denominator is that you've chosen to forgo the short-term, quick dopamine hit of a "new thing" (gambling, souvenir, etc...video idea??) for more substantive purchases. That paring down of extra expenses is such an impactful money-preserving strategy. Traditional cable TV is definitely on a one-way road to extinction, but now each individual channel has it's own subscription plan - frustrating. As an aside, throw those fish oil pills back in - the health benefits are worth the cost. Great video amigo.
100% agree with that! That's been a huge focus for me over the past few years to think long term with most things. The short term dopamine hits can get a lot of people in trouble. Haha yeah I wish that streaming didn't have all the options like it does now with all of these services. And totally agree about fish oil pills actually! That was just one that I named off the top of my head - but I eat fish a lot anyway now
Definitely feel you on the quality vs quantity argument. Not clothes for me, but headphones. I used to buy the cheap $20 headphones from the checkout counter at Best Buy. I thought I was getting a deal since they were only $20, and other ones cost $150-300. Now I know why these were $20. Mine only lasted a couple months before I had to buy new ones. Now I have a pair of $250 Sony ones. Had them for 2 years and they still work perfectly
Sports betting becoming normalized is kind of a scary sight to see. I myself have lost some money using these platforms. With all the promotions and profit boosts it's easy to lose a lot of money without even realizing it. Great points made throughout the entire video but wanted to share my thoughts on that one specifically. Love the videoas always , Daniel!
Hey Daniel. Really like this one - especially the tip on buying higher quality clothes. I learned that one many years ago. Better clothes make you look better and they last WAY longer! In the end, I think they save you money and the hassle of shopping so frequently to replace clothes that have fallen apart. :) Take care my friend.
Sports betting is horrible, I can see it becoming an addiction and ruining families. As an Asian, sports betting has run deep in our community with a lot of men as long as I have been in the US. This is just now mainstream. I have seen family financial ruined, family destroyed and homelessness from Sport gambling. I am so happy that you are not deep into it.
Yeah I'm not a fan of it and it's not talked about as being an issue like it should be. I see it everywhere and no one talks about the addiction it can cause. I haven't placed a bet in several years now
just a heads up...some phone service providers now charge extra to pay with a credit card. att started doing it last october and the charge is an extra 5 dollars per month per phone.
Verizon also does that and I believe T-mobile stopped accepting CC and digital wallets for auto payments which as a result would remove the auto-pay discount.
Thanks Mike! Yeah I feel like more and more people have realized that cable isn't needed. And I'm so glad to hear that you've stopped buying the cheap clothes as well haha
As a dude in my mid 20s, these were all very relatable! Some things I’ve always been picky on like cable/subscriptions and souvenirs which hasn’t changed. But the quality over quantity is huge for me now. Clothes, suitcases, accessories, you name it. I’ve gone through phone cases or chargers but now I buy quality products. Loved this video!
One thing to the sales idea. Waiting for a sale is different from shopping for a sale. If something I’ve been thinking about getting shows up on sale, it’s probably the right time to buy. If something else shows up on sale, I know that it’s a tactic to avoid falling for.
Great video @Daniel Braun! I think a lot of us in the comments section, including me, can relate to all the things you mention in your video. Most of us seem to struggle with being inundated with so much extras and luxuries that we don’t really need to be able to maintain our style of living. I think having the minimalist perspective on our finances not only eliminates the excess baggage of buying what we don’t really need, but also makes us more financially aware of what we spend money on and how we can do a better job of budgeting for buying the things we actually need. I truly believe all the viewers and commenters here want to see more videos like this one! Keep up the great content! ❤
Appreciate you branching out into more personal finance videos, Daniel! Also, I literally got a supplement ad while watching this video and I had to roll my eyes
I’ve turned to thrifting because you can see how the clothing has held up over the years to see its true quality, and it’s much cheaper so more money in savings
If you want to cut down on souvenirs, here’s my hack: buy a book or two about the place you’re visiting. EG, if you’re visiting Winston Churchill’s house, buy a Churchill biography in the gift shop. You’re bringing the tour guide home with you.
I always worried about minimum balances and checking fees hitting a schwab account, yet it is not the case. I just got my debit card. You just load up your checking and withdraw from any ATM for free. Simple as that. A good tip Daniel.
These were all great overall financial tips. Its a breath of fresh air to hear this in between other credit card related videos. I've leaned towards following the same kind of lifestyle as well. My cheaper clothes have been relegated to just wearing around the apartment whereas I have built up a very decent closet of good quality clothes in the past 2 years. It helps the clothes shopping be brought to a minimum which in turn helps me justify personally buying a piece of clothing that would be considered expensive (think buying a 450 dollar jacket that'll last instead of buying 5 or 6 hoodies for a little less that won't last nearly as long). I've never understood the appeal of sports betting but to each their own. And as for supplements, I always have protein on hand but I also use creatine. It helps maintain my muscle mass that I've worked on since I've moved towards running more as I get ready for a marathon. With a change to my diet, this has allowed me to keep my muscle but also burn through fat from running. I've lost 20 pounds from this regiment.
2:15 You are far more stylish than I am but I think our mentalities are similar here. I have always spent very little on clothes because...well my image has never been a priority. I have always bought cheap clothes that were a little big, knowing they'd shrink and wear over time (so to speak). I have been wearing a lot of the same clothes since late high school, early college and I am 30 now. The shift you end up talking about is something most people should consider even if they are more like me as there are a couple of categories where I have 'grown up' so to speak in terms of the clothes I buy. The two categories I have shelled out more money for over time are: 1. Work attire as you end up wearing these clothes all the time AND they tend to be worn in environments where everyone should care how they are presenting themselves. 2. Shoes. These wear so quickly that I spend more on shoes per pair recently, but they last YEARS instead of MONTHS. I have ended up saving money in the long run, and I'm also able to get shoes with 'extra features/qualities' like my waterproof sneakers which have lasted me 3 years and they are my 'daily drivers'. Thanks Daniel.
Sports betting and the rise of easy gambling is something that is going to get a lot of people in trouble. I've noticed a lot of slot parlors open near my neighborhood. I've seen this kind of thing before, 3 decades ago I lived in Eastern Canada, the Atlantic Lottery Corp came out with "Video Lottery" machines, a slot machine by another name and placed them in convenience stores. If you won, you got a print-out and store would pay. Stores got a cut of the profits. A few months later stories started hitting the news about how people got addicted to the machines, blew through their paychecks, divorces etc. Soon laws were passed and they were only allowed in bars. Of course sport betting puts it in the palm of the hand all the time. Just trouble for some.
Medically retired army vet, and I'm in school for exercise science --> Physical therapy, and I 100% agree with all of part 7 about diet and exercise. Exercise is the best medicine people!
Losing weight is not simply about consuming fewer calories than you burn. It’s about allowing your body enough time each day to use what you’ve consumed by not spiking your insulin by eating. As you get older, you will realize this.
It’s thermodynamics law, if you burn more than you consume then you will lose weight, a deficit doesn’t equate to a healthy diet but it means you’ll loose weight
Thank you for this video, Daniel. As a fresh grad out of college, it let me think about my spending habits... I might suggest stopping buying coffee at Starbucks and making coffee at home can also save a huge amount of money
Nice! I think that's the perfect cheap way to remember a trip. And haha I know what you mean - sometimes Jackie and I have to buy an ornament from Etsy for certain places if we can't find one while we're there 😂
Finance and I love to do postcards and fridge magnets from everywhere we go. Can spend $5-10 per location and get a couple fun things to both throw on our fridge and we make decorations out of the postcards too. Super cheap and super fun
Good tips Daniel. Wherever I can I buy high quality used clothes and shoes online. So much stuff is just brand new or close to brand new and steeply discounted off the rack rate. Never in my life bought cable or any tech insurance, just careful with my stuff and use it until it bricks, which is about 6+ years for Apple products. Only supplement I buy is high quality protein powder. When you get to the point where you can afford nicer items it does save you money, it's expensive being poor.
For souvenirs, I agree with you. I don't buy souvenirs. They're nothing more than a waste of money. The memories and the photos I have of a trip are the best souvenirs I can offer, and they're free.
one thing on the topic of sports betting. I do it because the way I do it has been proven over months and months to return an outcome. Basically is a collective of pros, finding the best lines, especially player props because they have the most room to make money (oddsmakers are lazy sometimes), and bet calculated amounts based on their ROIs, bet types, and a bunch of other factors. So yes for the average person "passion betting" as i like to call it, its absolutely a money sink and honestly a time sink, but I have honed in my process and have a 4.5% ROI over almost a year now, netting me at least 3 grand.
Great stuff.. I'll be 40 this yr and I eliminated all bank fees 20yrs ago when I joined Navy Federal credit union.. They also have some of the lowest interest rate credit cards. My NFCU Amex card gets 3x points on groceries, travel and gas..
Hi Daniel Thank you for all the useful information for credit card. I did not see much content on Citi Premire card benefits and it’s perks. Can you include this on one of your upcoming video.

Great video Daniel! I love how you talked about supplements. It’s been a year and a half since I began my gym journey and I’m told everywhere and by everyone how much supplements I need to take/buy to “get bigger”. They make it seem like a magic pill that gets me buff the following night lmao but all it requires is active, consistent, exercises and intake of protein. Gym bros be on one sometimes 💀
We all go through this transition starting about the late 20’s. I use the Amex bus gold for cell phone protection and that saves 60 a month as I pay for kids plans too. Will be moving to chase Ink next year.
Congrats Daniel... you're morphing into an older adult. :) And that is ok. All your checkboxes I have done many years ago. Amazing how easy it is to save money.
I like thrifting everythig, there are some good curated thrift shops in my area with some nice quality pants, shoes, and blazers. Also Cuts is pretty nice
Yeah thrifting is another great option! I've literally seen people build businesses from reselling stuff they found at thrift shops - so there's always good finds And yeah Cuts has been my go-to shirt lately 👍

I actually agree with getting enough omega 3s - I just started eating Salmon instead though. I kind of just named fish oil pills off the top of my head. I personally think that if you can get the right nutrition from good whole foods then that is better than than trying to optimize with many different supplements Certain supplements can be good - but my main point was just to focus most of your energy on diet and exercise because that has the greatest impact on health above all else

Yes, to be honest. In this day and age, that's a steal for a pair of shoes. I would buy them without thinking twice. But then again, I've spent $250+ on a pair of shoes as well so.... but it was within my budget.
Glad i got out of sports betting early, i never win anything but i feel lucky to only lose $40. Just felt like i was throwing away money, chances of turning a $5 bet into thousands is extremely slim. Deleted the entire account
Sports betting will be the next thing that severely impacts young and middle age Americans. It’s a huge problem. Literally priming us for gambling addiction.
Men have it easier then woman. They are constantly bombarded by the latest fashion craze. Men usually buy quality. I have a pair on Alden Shell Cordovan shoes that I bought 35 years ago. They have be resoled 2 times and they still look new. Buy quality, you will never be disappointed.
You're crazy. TVs, consoles, cars, Rolex, gold chains, clothes, etc, etc is all heavily marketed towards men. It's just men are harder to brainwash so most men don't care. But still a lot do.
Give this comment a thumbs up if you guys wanna see more general personal finance content like this

Good video
$60 shoes are considered cheap?

"No judgement."
Everyone, including you, knows that you're judging, by definition & action. Way to hedge your way out of being judged yourself.
Him explaining why he doesnt do it does not reflect his opinion of others who do lol
