OMG! It actually worked. I had some random AAA guy change my batter ($75!) and he jacked up the wiper. I think his mistake was that he didn’t turn it on without the wipers on to reset. THANK YOU!
Great instructional vidoe bro. I had put my wiper arms the completely the wrong location, half was on the glass and the other half out lol.. All good now. Thank you.
Its probably worth mentioning that the wiper motors are free running actuators just like window motors and sun roofs. If they loose programming, you'll need to program them with a scan tool. Also, the procedure is not always the same. On some of them you need to extend the wiper arms by hand to their full extended position. They also have alignment marks. If the windshield has been replaced, position the wipers so that the top of the wiper is 50mm from the A pillar. On those, you have to use a scan tool. I really shouldn't mention this, but there's a way to do this without removing the wiper arms and the cowl trim. Only do it this way if you have some experience working on cars. If you can do something simple like brake jobs or shocks/struts, you shouldn't have a problem. Its just a tight fit and can be frustrating for someone without experience. Start by removing the air box. If you look at the battery, its surrounded by a plastic box. If you bull up on the front wall of the box, it will detach. Fold the wall down and pull the battery forward. That will get it out from under the cowl. Be careful. There is a small wire that's hard to see, and it plugs into a connector on the negative battery terminal. You'll also need move some of the wiring on the front box panel before it will fold down enough to get the battery out. This is not a procedure that Ford approves of. However, if you go to a Ford dealer, every single tech in the shop will remove the airbox over removing the wiper arms.
You’re absolutely correct, I work as a AAA roadside tech and the very first battery install I had to do while training was on an escape 😫 the guy that was training me taught the method of removing the air box but recently I had another battery install on an escape and decided to be lazy and use the windshield wiper method 🤦🏾♂️ caught hell trying to get them back aligned until I can across this video, going forward I’ll just still to airbox method, a lot more stuff to take apart but at least I don’t have to mess with those pesky wiper arms
@@doeboy857 Its a lot more work taking the wiper arms off. If you're working with tools every day, you should be able to remove the airbox without too much difficulty. Its when the customers try to do the work themselves is when I see most of the issues.
Dude I watched so many videos and nobody explained this correctly. This is the only one that fully explains the problem that I have found! Thank you so much!! Ford charged me $200 to fix this the last time I tried this. And of course they didn't explain a thing. My personal issue was that nobody told me that you need to remove the wipers and turn them on then off so they cycle fully BEFORE you try to align them. I tried this so many times and just broke wiper after wiper! Last time I even managed to scratch my window. Man this is great!!!
I recently had the O2 sensors replaced in my 2017 Escape and that cowl and the battery must be removed. The mechanic obviously didn't know about the alignment marks and the next time it rained (Seattle!) the wipers didn't even try to work. They both just went to a straight up position and stopped there!! Your video was super easy to follow and saved the day!! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing. the video was helpful, the only part I think you missed was pulling up that wiper arm. they bend to halves, if you lift the half of the arm, you don't need a removal kit (position it at 90 degree). I had a ford dealer in Independence did mine wrong and your alignment tip helped a lot. I did not want to take it back to the dealer because I do hate them.
Good job! I was going to adjust my wipers. Couldn't get mine off, so I need to get a windshield wiper puller. Glad to see someone was having the same issue.
It is 2024. Screw the ratchet. Many of us have drills. Surely as a mechanic, you do. :-) Also the wiper pressing down on the windshield puts a lot of pressure on the bolt which makes it harder to remove. Bringing the wiper back to an upright position relieves that tension. I was able to pull the arms off by hand both times that I have replaced the battery in 7 years. I could remember how I aligned the blades to save my soul. The other videos were not really helpful. The exactness of the details you have provided should make all of the difference. Thanks for taking the time!
Just a note of caution - the windscreen goes down quite a bit under the rubber just above where the wiper arm is attached with the bolt. So take care when trying to pry off the arm from the screw when using a puller or something to wedge it off. If you happen to put pressure with a wedge above the nut you can crack this part of the windshield that you can't see. This happened to me we were out camping with friends and we tried removing the wiper and only had a small carpenter hammer to wedge with. It was wide enough to touch the rim of the windshield and made a huge crack along the right bottom of the windscreen
Good to know, My daughter in GA (I'm in VA) has an issue with her 2016 Escape wipers, I didn't get much detail but I just got back from my local Pick-N-Pull yard and picked up two motors complete with the arms, and new blades and a puller (Amazon), I need to be prepared when I go down there in 2 weeks for a visit. This info sure helps. Thank you!
No might be. It is a replacement. We had to replace ours when it was less than a year old. Was not happy to learn that even though the crack was clearly a defect, it was not covered under the warranty. Ford windshield was 3 times the price of the aftermarket. Car is 7 years old now and no issues with the aftermarket windshield.
My brother changed my battery, and caused the arms to unaligned. This video just saved the day!
Life saver is what this guy is. Ford is making it a more convoluted process just to change the damn battery.

The puller was a must for this one. Best of luck to you!
exactly what i was looking for! had no idea there were even markings! thank you
All you have to do is push down on the wiper arm a short distance from where it bolts on while you pull up around the bolt.

Did u know if I bend the wiper that pops ?? You don’t need that tool to pull the wipers out
This video was helpful thank you. So much work just to change that dang battery. Ford please stop this design.
My windshield did not have those markings. Might be a replaced windshield.
