Thank you for showing how to control the distaff. I knew about tucking the end in a waistband, but the top also needs control. A ribbon around the neck works very well. I never saw this in paintings or in text. I knew distaff had to be a more useful tool, and you have shown how it is done. Thank you. Happy spinner.
+Lois Swales I make a bat, but since I don't own a drum carder I do it with the handcarders. Instead of rolling each batch into a small rolag, I pile them up until I get a nice thick layer. I then twist it around and roll it a bit to get it compact and roll it around my distaff. Your video of how you dress your distaff was really helpful! I will make a video soon.
Thank you for your very informative video about spinning with a distaff and a out your special spindle and its origins. There is a dearth of information on using distaffs, although they appear to be very useful tools, especially for spindling.
I'm not even a spinner, and I really like your videos. You're an excellent teacher in terms of conveying information succinctly and effectively. Maybe more important, you are an engaging teacher. Your videos have a great 'vibe' that makes a student feel welcome and comfortable. It is hard to explain that idea... I hope it makes sense to you. Thanks for an enjoyable series.
Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved this! I would have liked a close up of the spindle so I could see the knob at the top. But Thank you sooooo much! This is great!
Really enjoy your videos about spinning with a distaff! Do you know if there is any possibility to buy a spindle like yours? Hope there will be more of your charming videos about spinning! ;)
Sidispinnt the spindles of this type that I use are all antiques, no one sells them anymore as today a spindle with a whorl is usually prefer. I have a wood carver that has reproduced them for me if you want.
I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but some supported spindles, specifically Russian ones can be and were historically used like a drop spindle too, exactly how this video shows. There are many makers of them on Etsy

Amazing! Looks so zen!
Many thanks to a grandson who loved his grandmother spinning. I would enjoy seeing how you prepare your wool and put it on your distaff.

Thank you. I needed this for spinning at the Medieval Center at Nykøbing Falster in Denmark.

I am also very interested in this type of spindle. Has anyone started recreating them yet?
