People often forget this started out as a prayer. She is trapped in a church then turns to God in her time of need. Oddly enough the people persecuting her were religious figures trying to "do God's work" just to fulfill a want. Esmerelda is often over looked in the Disney ladies line up. So sad.

The original song saved my life when I was a kid. Made me feel not so alone. This song is now 8 years old, ironically I was when the original came out. And here I am feeling the same feels back then.

God hears our cries and longings and He reaches out to us. I have always felt like an outcast myself and hearing this song again, it reminds me that Jesus walked on this Earth and had real feelings himself.
He was rejected and cast out and then even put to death. He became an outcast for those He loves, so they will never have to feel lonely again.
Accepting Him in my life has brought true love in the deepest and darkest places of my soul. “God help the
outcast.” That is my cry as I have felt that pain and lost and now feel the joy and peace of being found in Him. I know where I belong now.

As a nonbinary person who is finally free and happy after years of hiding and denial, this song, and Reflection, really hits differently now (despite how problematic and full of harmful stereotypes the movie was). Being both apart of the LGBT community but also religiously involved, it was hard to cope, as I was bullied, being told I’m going to hell and God has no love for people like me.
