Love you Ovi! I first noticed Ovechkin at the World Junior Championships in Halifax. He broke my heart that night by winning gold in Canada. I will never forget his physical presence. The way Jordan Tootoo was running around checking everyone all tournament but he just bounced off Ovechkin. Then Ovi entered the league and immediately delivered a thunderous hit knocking the partition from the glass. That rookie year with you and Sid was nothing short of spectacular spectacular. I’ve been with you this entire time. Through all the ups and downs, and I’m so happy to see you reach another milestone. Go get that 802, and then 895!

Ovi got me into hockey since I was a kid with his introduction to the NHL. I was hooked ever since. I remember all this milestones, the 2018 Stanley Cup win that I was riding a high for months.
Seeing him hit 800. Wow. I never had a doubt, and still believe he WILL become #1 on that list and overtake Gretz, and I will cherish that moment for my life, telling my grandkids one day decades down the line when Ovi Jr. is playing in the NHL.
Thanks Ovi. You made the NHL great and what it is today. The greatest goal scorer the sport has ever seen. A legend.

To me, stories like yours is Ovi's true legacy. Sure, he has tons of on-ice success, but the fact that youth hockey participation is up over 200% since he's come to Washington is way bigger than anything else. In 2004, you could find slots in just about any youth hockey team. Now, not only have the number of teams exploded, good luck finding a spot on those teams.
I’m a Kraken fan now since they made it easy to get into the NHL but I remember tuning into a Capitals game as a kid 10 years ago. Watching Ovi play was mesmerizing. I’ll always cheer on the Caps. The Great 8 is one of the best to ever do it.

Ovi is a born sniper. I do not know how many goals he would have scored now if he had not missed matches due to covid and lockouts. The fact that Ovi almost escaped injury during his outstanding career can be considered a great success. A total of 18 games missed due to injuries is a unique indicator for an NHL superstar. I think Ovi has every chance to surpass Wayne Gretzky, who played until he was 38. The main thing is that there are no injuries...

Regardless of what your favorite team is if you love hockey you have to admire his accomplishments. All I can say is congratulations to him.
Chicago has some of the best sports fans in America. They know their hockey history and are showing respect to one of the all time great goal scorers.

Over those 800 goals soooooo many were skilled goals. Honestly, even the ones where he sits on the PP and blows it by the goalie is impressive. Everyone knows it’s coming yet they still can’t stop it. I don’t want to hear about how he’s lazy he’s a one dimensional player blah blah. All of that is complete bullshit. They never watched Ovi play over the years then because he is one player who will do everything and anything to win as seen in his 2018 championship run.

@@oceanshrugs9235 The first of the day (798) was the good goal with the goalie in the frame. And even his empty neters streak (4 goals) was the longest eng streak which he is now tied with two other players.
The fact he doesn't have as many hat tricks is another nod to his consistency. Doesn't score in bursts but scores at a steady pace, for decades at this point...
He is incredible. And to think so many wrote him off as getting to old and slipping. I thought his usual cast of players come back his scoring could increase. One came back. Right smack in the thick of the goal scoring race. It is like scoring became easier. Funny Oshie comes back and so did his scoring. Still me myself did not think he would get close. As long as he stays healthy he will get it. I wonder if he keeps playing after he passes the Great one. And for how long? 50? Think he must be a robot. His scoring is unreal. He still looks great. His recent pace will get him 50 again if not more. If there is slippage in his play, I do not see it. Very little, but he is getting gray.

Assuming he hits that, he'd be only 62 goals away from 895. He'd only need to average 31 goals the next two seasons and if he played to 40 he'd only need to average 21 goals over 3 seasons. It is absolutely without any doubt VERY possible.

I've had the joy if watching Ovi ever since I was 13 years old. Followed his career the whole time and even as a leafs fan he's still my favorite player in the league. Best goal scorer of all time and so physically dominate from the moment he entered the league. I don't want to see him stop at 895, the Great 8 needs to hit 900!

@@charleynewman4783 there's a chance; he's at 800 now, there's 51 games left this season, lets say he finishes this year with 54 (he's on pace for 54) he'd finish the season at 834. At the pace he's going.
He'll have 3 more years remaining on his contract, he would need to then average 21.5 goals in those 3 seasons to reach 900. He's averaging 44 goals per season after 17.5 seasons. In my opinion, and you're happy to object, he'll reach 900

Wings fan for life here. But I would be lying if I said that this didn't make me a little emotional. Congrats to one of the greatest players of my time. And kudos to Chicago fans for celebrating him the way they did. It was classy and made this wings fan proud of our rivals across the lake.

I imagine even if Ovie starts from his own net, passes 5 opponents, fools a goalie and scores, some will still say "those 5 players he passed were not the best, and the goalie had a bad day"
