- Ed Welches wonderfull theme tune to BlockBusters! This is off my single which is very rare! vinyl quality. I beleve I am the only youtuber to upload the actual full theme and not a home made longer version
Coming home from school, Mum back from work, and then waiting to watch Blockbusters. Remember it like it was yesterday. Mum's gone now, I'm a Mum and my children come back and watch Pointless. How time passes so quickly, I'll never understand x
pointless is crap bring back blockbusters i say lol
@@spidermg1843just as well i watch the chase
@spidermg1843 yes definitely x
@@spow1064 just as well we don't watch pointless. I'm a fan of the chase
How come some old tv theme tunes musically are more competent than anything in the charts for the last decade?
Because, once upon a time, people used to care about what they created, rather than churn out whatever their computer composed for them...
@@twocvbloke Today people are blind and stupid and don't even care about shows.
Yes it has to be said.... what on earth is Cardi B a role model for 12 year old girls when the songs she's releasing are called WAP (WET A** P****) So skanky!
Life list quality and settled for quantity in so many ways.
Ah now that would be.... come closer... I'll whisper... BECAUSE YOU'RE OLD.
@@SimonPeel I was listening to a typical 80s song today Paul Young Everytime you go away and i was picturing it without the vocals and i noticed i would still listen to it and love it, it could stand without the vocals (amazing as they are). multiple instruments, melodies etc then i realised if you did the same test with any modern song you would have some bland rubbish that sounds like it was made by a teen in his spare time. No it is not just a matter of getting old.
I would ride into space battle upon my lightning tiger to this
I'd like to see that!
Yes! But why am I getting He-Man vibes to that?
This comment is 7 years old, but I would ride that Tiger into the sun with you!
🤣🤣 can I join you please?? ⚡🐯⚡
I’ve used this comment to work mates
After my potato waffles, sausage and baked beans tea, it was time for Blockbusters.
Right in the nostalgia.
TardisMechanic I had an identical childhood
Bob Holness was like an unofficial dad to me. Imparting knowledge, being polite. Bob Holness was a genetic mix of Jim Bowen and Bamber Gacoigne. On a serious note...... WAFFLES hmmm I'm hungry
Hahahaha same here mate Hahahaha brilliant man
Completely the same as mine except I reckon c 1992 I was ruining my tea with tomato bloody sauce!!
@@alilloyd6132 Improving* 😂😂
I love this song so much, even though it doesn’t know how and when to end appropriately.
God Bless Bob Holness, a Gentleman of the highest order.. we wont ever see his like on TV again and this makes me very sad... R I P Big man...
actually, we will.
And all I needed was A pee.
Kinda sad (especially as an American) that he died. But there are also a lot of American Blockbusters fans that remember the time Bill Cullen (hosted the American version for 2 years) passed away.
RIP BOB HOLNESS 1928-2012
Its A Shame Really But This Song Reminds Me Of The Slammers BTW
RIP
@@jameshardie9914 :(
Does it
Yeah it’s over 9 years now since we’ve lost Bob holness
An irresistibly catchy and nostalgic theme tune is correct! And that’s Blockbusters!!!
This IS the 80's. Greatest quiz show ever. I never missed an ep and soooo wanted to be a contestant, but never quite managed it. Gold runs were nail-biting. Still remember screaming answers at the screen! Classic times :)
Ed Welch is my grandfather :)
WE'RE NOT WORTHY!
WE'RE NOT WORTHY!!
Sol Rowe Welch Did he do Thomas and Friends ''roll call'' song? - that's a great bit of work!
+Sol Rowe Welch Just wanted to say Sol, that your grandfather Ed, created such an iconic piece of theme music to a great programme.
Joe White yes yes he did!
Classictv90s sadly I'm too young to have seen it on tv! Thanks
Simply awesome this tune, a real gem and a throwback to my childhood.
The weeping guitar in Blockbusters gets me every time.
The electronic cello and brass are quite good for that era. This was 1980s! Check out how poor the guitar still was in 1995 from a multi-billion organisation: ua-cam.com/video/9LgS0RkCNlU/v-deo.html
R. Charles Allsopp oh dear 🤣
its a modern day thing but i come home from school on thursdays and visit my grandma and we watch challenge, ch. 48. love it
This reminds me of weekday teatimes sat in front of the tv, watching Blockbusters with my mum and brother, Barry. Happy times.
Fun fact: Ed Welch also composed the Eurovision entry for Iceland in 1995, 'Nuna'.
Oddly, this British theme tune is as good as Jean-Michel Jarre. Loved it George!
Jean Michel Jarre played Orient Express & that music was used for the Catchword theme tune.
This music makes me happy takes me back to when I was younger awww memories RIP Bob Holnes x😥❤😪
As an 80s kid, this tune brings back a lot of memories 😀
Contestant: Can I have a P please Bob?
Bob: You should have gone before we started.
There was a dance routine that whent with this theme song. Remember watching it on TV.
it was a hand jive not a dance routine
@@takethehighroad5027 Lol.
This song makes me feel happy I think it reminds me of kids Sega game theme music. I think it is really cool.
You're right, brings back memories.
Can I have a P please Sonic!
Mike Brock If Tails had his own game lol
Because they were all made on the coolest synthesizer, the DX7
What a track one best game show themes ever. Advanced for it's time. Genius! !
This is the best thing that has ever entered my ears!
Gold to gold in sixty seconds or less.
Takes me back to such a Happy Place...
Rushing home from school to watch it happy memories
George, you're a prince among men. Thanks for putting this up.
Great show, hearing this brings back memories. I was only 16 when Blockbusters started on tv. Where did 40 years go???? 😳
Nice one, I had never heard the full proper theme, as on the vinyl, only the TV theme and the midi version of this. Absolutely A1. Just a Shame Bob isn't around to give us a P anymore
Ed Welch. Brilliant composer. You don't get cracking gameshows with cool theme tunes like this anymore. This is up there with TVS Catchphrase.
Or TSW's iconic theme!
Yes you do. Catchprase and Saturday Night Takeaway and lots of good tv themes still going. Paul O Grady show was an awesome one too.
And guess who wrote the theme to Catchphrase yup Mr Ed Welch again
@@cliffcook3993And Knightmare, I believe. Insane output.
@@stuartforbes indeed knightmare was another one of his theme tunes
RIP Bob Holness we will miss you and I will see you in the heavens
Brilliant.
Loved Blockbusters & Bob Holness!
Got back from school-homework-Blockbusters-Dinner-Lego with my Brother-Bedtime. Memories.
I loved Bob Holness sadly hes not here now :(
Jaygamer553 I know. He lived up to the age of 83 though!
i love him too and im very heartbroken to hear that hes no longer here
I love the tune so much when blockbusters came on I turned the TV high. A brilliant game show with a superb host.
If I were a WWE wrestler this would be my entrance music.
Jonathon Cowley 😂😂
Lol
What would your wrestler name be tho
"It's THE BLOCKMANNNNNNNNNNNN!"
U would probably get a stone cold stunner for it as well lol
James Marshall Bob Holness
Thank you for your lovely comment! My Grandad has got loads of BlockBusters on Betamax I will have to dig them out and watch them! Its not the same watching it on Challenge with all the modern adverts!
Yes i have ceartantly took good care of this record! the man who had this before never took it out of the sleeve!
RIP Bob Holness.
How can anyone ever dislike this. Seriously, how?
George, this is a wonderful upload. I never appreciated the theme until now and you are so lucky to have this fabulous version. I so enjoy your channel.
Thanks so much for the upload! I really enjoy watching Blockbusters on Challenge :)
Yes I am going to do the same next week and watch it on Challenge
That music was used in an adult swim commercial bumper. Inform the UK!
Similar stuff was produced by Jean-Michel Jarre. Happy to look at any evidence of direct copy from the USA Nathan, although Central TV would most likely have legitimately paid for license to use the sheet music.
I was mainly hopeless at the questions, but as a teen I absolutely loved this.
This is crying out for a new remix
The McVities Jaffa Cake ad was on before this, how fitting :)
UK had a great run with Blockbusters then we did here in the USA, Bob Holness did a great job, he's up there with Bill Cullen who hosted the show here in the USA. little know fact, Blockbusters was the only quiz game show producted by Mark Goodson and Bill Todman
this is not the original. This was a later commercial recording done by Welch without the orchestra and acoustic instruments of the TV master (bass, guitar, horns) . The master tapes to the original 1983 recording were lost in the mid nineties. If you want hear the original version which is the definitive recording, listen to a 1992-1994 show where it was broadcast in stereo.
NERD!!!!
@@nst1981+ You twat.
They were LOST??
WHAT
What Ever I think it’s called liking a show and having a tiny bit of intelligence!!
This is the version Sky used for their series. Doesn't have the depth compared to the original.
Bloody hell this is so f**king awesome. We were lucky to be alive back then!
I was pleased when I got my copy back in 1988, although I thought it was in wider stereo than this, but no I just played my single and its virtually mono
Nice upload, ten years ago. doesn't time fly
Thanks Joe,coming from you that means a lot!
Bob Holness had a radio programme on LBC (London Broadcasting Corporation, home of Independent Radio News) in the early 1980s; I tuned in quite often back then.
RIP Bob
Can I have a P please Bob? No your wait till we have finished filming. :D
Never gets old
"Can I have a U please Bob" Bob Holness: "Which porcelain thing I provide when you ask for a P was invented by Armitage Shanks?" Contestant: "urinal"
weeknights 5.15 on ITV
funky
Ed welch is my grandfather!
If this theme can only be put on a loop, oh, would that be wonderful. It's that great of a theme song.
That Jaffa Cake advert brought me here :-)
My Sunday evening.... sat down to watch uncle Bob as my old fella would call him.
Anyone think the Blockbusters theme and the Guile theme from Streetfighter bear more than a passing resemblance?
I Would Fly Around the World in 1 go While Listening to This I used To Watch it With My Family in 2011 Just Before The Legendary Bob Holness RIP Bob you Will Be Missed
I do find it odd that when ever i listen to Jane Widlen Rush hour I can hear the chords from this there are similarities and so always makes me think of blockbusters
bob!
'' Can i have a P please Bob? ''
Straight after was ITN news then at 545.
I'm in a show where there's a gameshow scene I do with this other guy and this is our theme song which plays
Happy memories
Great!
This really feels like it should have been the intro to some sort of actioney adventure fiction series, not a gameshow.
I have a STUNNING version of this. I've not ever uploaded to UA-cam before, but I'll gen up and submit it shortly. And yes, I'm an old Blockbusters fan and a half !
It is as seminal as John Malcolm's Non Stop, the end of which was used for the ITV News programme from 1955 until 1982
I'll take a "P' please, Bob.
Thank you Sir xmas! for that lovely comment! it really is a good record to have and a rare record to!
What a banger
I dearly hope that challenge put all the ones with the late great master bob holness presenting
Gimme a p please Bob. I miss this show.
Bob "whole-ness" Stuart. He was polite, kind, humorous and influential for kids like me watching. A bit like Jim Bowen, Bamber Gascoigne and Leslie Crowther.
@@The670533 I know that. I grew up with blockbusters in the 90s. Much simpler times. Anyway, enjoy the full theme everyone. I'm going to find other childhood game show themes now.
best track ever to do a balloon
Blockbusters was one of my favorite shows when I were about your age. How we laughed when anybody asked for a "P" (IVORIESMAN has beaten me to that one though!) This is also one of my top 2 TV themes (the other is Juliet Bravo)
That is in really fine condition - no crackles or pops. It doesn't sound as if it has been played much, if at all. Right up there with some of IVORIESMAN's 78's! Top stuff
'I'll have a P please bob"....."Not whilst your on stage you bloody wont" :-)
I want this played at my funeral
BUD DA BUM BUM BUM
Amazing tune. It’s like Harold Faltermeyer meets Mozart.
Vinyl? I’m in. I’m off to Discogs to try and find a copy.
Forget discogs.... Go into Google.. Hit youtube downloader... Select as MP3 and smash the convert button, and you're done
Give us an awl p there Bob God bless ya filled many childhood afternoon for me love this music x x
What B was a show that started in America in 1980, got cancelled by NBC in 1982, and then debuted in the UK in 1983?
2:20 gives me chills
Briefly during the shows early run, Bob Holness presented a copy to winners and I think runners up.
And it reminds me of tee times when I was a kid
Somehow this has all the soul you'd expect from the composer of the music for Spike Milligan's narration of The Snow Goose.
Used on Mcvitie's Jaffa biscuits
Fun fact, the Blockbusters theme tune was composed by the same person who composed the theme tune for Knightmare.
Since I live in the United States, Blockbusters only survived a fraction of years, as oppose to this gem. Bob Holness was a perfect match to our Emcee, Bill Cullen but not Bill Rafferty a few years later. The original opening of Bob's version was beautifully done. As for Ed Welch and his theme, there is no comparison whatsoever.
Ahhh Rockbusters
This theme is a complete contrast to the music from the American show it was spun off of. That version had a Big-Band-flavored theme.
Give us a P please Bob
Nice to hear a few music nods to Beethoven's 5th
Wow, it can't be because of that reference to this music, surely they also put it in the advertising of video stores in television commercials about this name that says on the cover of a competition program and in the business when it was the old days and this it also had in the movie rental business before it went bankrupt because Netflix took over a new platform called Streaming.

"Id Like To Go For A "P" Bob"!!! lol
As near as dammit, is better than the 40 second intro.
This is really a great find and upload. I remember this single being advertised at the end of a BB episode and spent the rest of my stay haunting the record stores of Leeds for a copy, but no salesclerk ever heard of it.
Btw, is it just me, or does the section from 1:14 to 1:20 feel it doesn't really belong there?
