    "izuku has a villain's back story"
    Thank you for pointing that out. He took a lot of bullshit from the world and people around him, yet he didn't give up. And I'm really admirative how you analyzed so well the fact that his "optimism was born from desperation". I don't know for others, but that kind of optimism is the one I relate the most to, everyday, at every time. Maybe because we're in a world already messed up, and without super heroes. And honestly, without anime or writing, I would be really desperate and pessimistic...

    One of my favorite observations: Heros and Villains have the same origin stories. They culminate in One Bad Day, that tips them totally over the edge. Those who become heroes dedicate themselves to the idea that nobody will suffer as they did. However, villains dedicate themselves to the idea that EVERYONE will suffer as they did.

    • @michaelford5275
      @michaelford5275 3 роки тому +29

      @ASTROTHUNDER there are a lot of reasons that I find him relatable. These extend from his personality to the various themes presented in the character.
      One of the big reasons is that he isn't super charismatic and is somewhat shy of a main character, like me. He's very awkward in a very relatable way. He isn't like the generic open and overly charismatic shonen main characters (like Luffy, Goku, Natsu, Asta, every isekai protagonist, and many other shonen main characters). While those other shonen main characters are fun to watch because of their charismatic personalities, I can never find myself able to really relate and vibe to them.
      Another thing is that he doesn't always win. From the first season, every battle that was won, was won because of luck or another hero stepping up. His first real victory was against muscular in season 3. Just like in real life, a person wont always have major victories just when they start their journeys. Going with this, the show explores the fact that the "power of friendship" doesn't exist.
      There are A LOT of other, more personal reasons I find Deku very relatable. However, I wont go into that rn. As a whole, I find that MHA is an anime that is surprisingly deep show. On the surface, it seems like a normal superhero show with not too much to it. However, if you take the time to reflect upon the show and look deeper, it is probably better and than most shonen anime in nearly every aspect. Still, there are some outlires to my assumption (like FMAB, AOT, and some others that I cant think of atm).
      Sorry this reply is so long, it's just hard for me to put everything into a few sentences xD.

    • @michaelford5275
      @michaelford5275 3 роки тому +7

      @ASTROTHUNDER it's not for everyone, but it's really good in my opinion. There's a reason it's one of the most popular anime currently.

    • @michaelford5275
      @michaelford5275 3 роки тому +4

      @ASTROTHUNDER technically, there is no filler in the anime, but there are bad arcs. Imo, the anime is amazing, but there are still flaws. Just like every other show and anime. Honestly, just skip the hero lisence test arc, it's the most boring one so far and it doesnt really add much weight to the story. There are a lot of cringe parts, but they seem purposeful to me. That is because they show how these characters are just kids and it shows the contrast between the innocence of their school life and the cold hard reality of the real world.

    *spoilers for mha manga below (it’s basically just a breakdown of what you said in the video, while adding our current knowledge of the story through the recent manga chapters)
    it’s interesting seeing all the parallels between horikoshi’s first work and my hero academia. shigaraki’s birth name is tenko shimura, and his sister is hana shimura. it’s a nice little reference for those who know his earlier works. but also, the parallels between warriors and heroes are quite obvious the further ahead you are in the manga. currently, the manga is focusing on the true nature of heroism, showcasing that it’s not as pure and wholehearted as the media has led people to believe. the world is discovering the true darkness of hero society, and after endeavour’s abusive nature is revealed, some are choosing to reject it entirely. deku, just like hana, is discovering that heroes are used as tools for the government, with some heroes being ordered to assassinate troublesome heroes or villains, yet still being praised in the spotlight. despite that, he is focused on becoming a true hero, and changing hero society for the better.
    my hero’s connections are obvious. as for shinka rhapsody, it appears that the “manifesting different traits over time” was a prototype for deku inheriting the past ofa user’s quirks.
    omagadoki zoo seems to prototype deku’s current hero costume, as well as the side characters in mha. currently, deku is looking more like a bunny than ever by actually wearing his mask for once (it’s about damn time), and he has gran torino’s cape + comically oversized gloves. the colour schemes are quite similar as well, using a lot of red and yellow (although midoriya’s design has a lot of green as well)
    barrage’s main tie in is pretty much just becoming the greatest of all (a king, number one hero), and the obvious creation of ochako’s character.
    it’s really interesting to see how horikoshi prototyped his most successful story through his previous manga. i like that he didn’t just give up on his ideas, but instead slowly developed them over the span of multiple works.

I saw my future as quite bleak, hopeless and i was jaded by my life experiences and unfulfilled dreams. Initially i found MHA's story to be too bright, innocent and unbelievable. Deku too a degree annoyed me as i saw him as a naive boy. But yet.. i kept watching MHA and was moved to tears many times. I thought i had already seen enough shonen shows to not be surprised yet something MHA's writing just works. And i have watched many reaction videos of other fans also moved to tears by MHA.
    As corny as may sound, MHA restored some of the hope and dreams i have.

    Ahhh, the feeling of desperation of something you want for potentially something you can't get is such a feeling I got through the first 2 episodes and the fact those themes are littered throughout the story and more makes me love the anime even more, I think it's probably the reason I get a little annoyed when I see people talking bad about it lol, it's because those themes really relate. It's such a simple anime but I like that all the more to be honest, I really don't know how it became one of my favourites.

    Hey Kyle,
    I want to seriously thank you for this video. I have no clue if you will ever see this comment but I need to at least try to tell you this.
    This video is one of my favorite analytical videos not because of the incredible analysis or anything like that, which I agree with all the points stated and you hit the nail right on the head with all of them, but because of how it effected me. This video I ended up first watching at around 4 a.m. and by the end of it I was crying from it... My Hero Academia has done so much for me and being able to see someone put so many of my own thoughts into words and help me just embrace how My Hero Academia has impacted me was really heart warming and needed in my life. I have watched this video countless times since then and remains to be one of my favorite videos I have ever watched not just from a analytical standpoint but because of the message you talk about in it with how everything was worded and everything.
    From a random stranger on the internet, thank you so much for the content you put out. It does matter and it does impact people in ways you may have never imagined and I am proof of that. I hope you continue chasing your dreams whatever they may be and always do things that make you happy. Have a wonderful day.

    Much love to you dude. I came to this video looking forward to finding out about more of Horikoshi's previous works and came out of it in near tears. The question of what it means to be a hero, the struggle of trying to fulfill your own (seemingly) impossible expectations, there was so much there.
    Deku's villain-like backstory and how he could've easily turned out differently is a piece of insight that I'll be sharing around a lot from now on. It really struck me then how vital optimism is in stories like these, especially more so when we consider all the context and circumstances surrounding it.

    Here is a bit more about Shinka Rhapsody for those interested (also there is a one shot you missed called "Space Boy' which i think is the One-Shot to Barrage)
    -Shinka Rhapsody is a story where people have begun developing powers. The crime rate is increasing and there are no heroes, but the police are there, yet, struggling to keep things in control
    - Evolution suddenly happened in 2008, and you “evolve” suddenly as an adult
    - Within one year 30% of the population had evolved (almost opposite of MHA 80%)
    - Your “evolution” is based on your desires/wishes, so if you want to be taller you might “evolve” and have a long neck, if you want to eat a lot you “evolve” into a giant mouth monster
    - In theory people who don’t have a strong desire don’t evolve
    - Main character Masashi wants to be “stronger” to defeat the guy who murdered everyone in his hometown so he keeps evolving to get stronger
    - the murderer Magari wants to kill so has evolved to be able to kill well
    - Masashi has kind of a proto-Kirishima/Tetsutetsu hardening thing going on

    Not a fan of MHA, but I can't pass up the chance to watch a Kyle Robes video! But that brings up another video I saw by my friend KevinNyaa about how he didn't like ReZero as much initially but came around to really enjoying the things he hated initially. Obviously, these are different reasons than the ones you listed here but I think a good take away from this video and Kevin's would be to have an open mind about anime and try to experience as much as you can before you write it off. On the flip side, if you don't like shounen, you don't need to watch MHA to know you won't like it - but even then you never know there one day could be a series that has this same effect on you as MHA did for Kyle and take his words and experiences to end up enjoying something you otherwise wouldn't previously.
    The mindset of closing something out without a fair shot is all around the anime community, because it's everywhere, it's what humans do. But if we can all give things more of a fair shake then I think we could learn a lot about our own tastes besides just... closing everything out. I don't know, maybe I'm going down a road you didn't intend for this video to pave but it did get me thinking about it a lot so here is my two cents.

  • @chosoistryinghisbest

    I think that BNHA being born out of a desperate optimism is why I was really drawn to BNHA more than any other shounen. Horikoshi doesn't give us a clear cut answer about hero society. Hero society is so, so flawed, but he makes it clear that anarchy isn't the answer. Society is just...society. And we have to deal with everything that comes with it.
    Deku tries so hard to be optimistic because he needs to be. It might not be fair to him, but it's the way things are and have to be for him to still be here. Because we see in the villains, if we harbor hate, it sets us back. it doesn't allow for us to process our trauma and our feelings, instead we revel in them until we burn. It makes us cynical and nihilistic. We don't need to forgive who hurt us, but we need to forgive our past self who was hurt by trusting the wrong people. Our past self wasn't wrong for trusting someone, we need to forgive them because even though their actions led to our present self, they didn't do anything wrong.
    And that is also seen in the villains. Let's take Touya Todoroki, Dabi, for example. He ultimately crashed and burned due to everything he faced from Endeavor. But his hatred led to him losing his mind and almost killing his 2 brothers that he claimed to love. He doesn't need to forgive Endeavor or even Rei, but there is one person he does need to forgive. Himself. Himself who was a child. That Touya who lived for his parents' attention, and specifically Enji's. He feels resentment for Enji, Rei, and especially his younger self for not being enough and for wanting Enji's attention.

And we have known that deku is protrayed by himself from the personality to the back story. And instead of letting bakugou, the bullyer, being crush to dust by the one he bullied, he let bakugou having his own unique character development and write a strange, uncalled, yet beautiful relationship between bakugou and deku. That's definitely say something.

    I just want to say... Thank you so much for this video. I have loved and had an obsession with heroes ever since I was young and the way MHA presented itself and your overall thesis of "optimism out of desperation" is exactly what I thought but, couldn't put into words. The show felt so optimistic in a mature sense but I could never put my exact finger on it, but your video is my exact thoughts brought out. For me, MHA has been my favorite anime for a multitude of reasons and if other people aren't into it then that's great because I still love enjoying what I love and if I ever can talk to someone that loves the show as I do, we can talk about heroes. Recently, it's just been a giant target on my back since there are so many people that haven't even watched the show but have trashed on me and put me down for loving it to points where I would even get multiple threats in discord servers and many people that I have found online that "like" the show don't really seem to understand what I find so brilliant about it, It's always about spoilers, shipping, and other things that don't really matter or take a core out of the show. Even the lessons and the things the characters go through don't even seem to phase people to inspire them to be better or help people. On both ends, it just has sucked expressing any type of opinion for this anime, but this piece of art you uploaded has given me so much comfort I almost cried. Of course like everything, this isn't perfect, but that is the beauty in everything, nothing ever is, and because of that the highs shine even brighter and it also helps me appreciate other forms of media and shows like Dr. Stone which has been a fantastic watch for me. What I want to say, is thank you for this and for giving this boy something to look positively on to be a hero in my own way and have more positive outlooks on the things that I enjoy.
