    The mother writing an erotic fiction for her dead son as revenge was crazy

    • @Pattiecake
      @Pattiecake 2 місяці тому +5

      I think the mother and the son were involved sexually. Which would give some context to Jonathan “loving” her more than his father. Taking candid pictures of her. The overwhelming depression when she found out he had died saving a women’s child. They asked a question asked when they found out Jonathan saved the child, what compelled him to do that knowing how selfish he was. I don’t think the mom would have a hard time writing from that perspective if she wasn’t already familiar with who he was and possibly because she had abused him herself.

      I feel like he R worded his girlfriend that's why she left abruptly and was SO upset that the mother called Jonathan's mother. Or he was doing something highly odd like what he does in Italy. The cut on arm is explained by Catherine. What isn't explained is how she still hung around him the next day, when he saves the boy.

    On the sound mix. I believe it was designed for 5.1 surround mix. I noticed that when the main dialog was on it was in the center, but when the narration was being read, it switched to the side and rear channels. I think they may have been going for an audio book experience when it was switching to the narration.

I was reading Harold Robbins, Sidney Sheldon, Jacqueline Susann, and Jackie Collins when I was 13. I don't like how slow this goes. Nothing has shocked me. I really find myself laughing. Thinking how do these people get out of bed? I am at episode 5. Will keep watching as I have a good idea how this ends. This is just like Presumed Innocent. They changed the character at the end due to the age of the character. Had read that one too. Seen the the original movie with Harrison Ford.

    I need to read the novel cause i`m invested on what the girlfriend and her family told the mother, i honestly don't believe the mother didn't know anything and yet was so precise, like this was a conduct that she had already seen or heard from the son, i`m so curious on the real reason the gf came back cause it definitely at the end just seems like a made up excuse specially from the reaction of the girlfriend`s mother

    I think the story itself is average (even weak plotting wise at times), but the acting is superb and keep you engaged. Cate Blanchett & Kevin Kline are just marvellous.
    The other big positive is the Cinematography.

    P.S: A good casting of Leila George as the young Cate Blanchett.

    I am in the middle of watching this series and I was curious how others view the emotional drama of an affair that happened about 20 years ago that the character that Cate played. Certainly there was a horrible tragedy when Cate's young lover dies attempting to rescue her son. Cate had never told her husband about her affair, which when her husband found out he kicked her out of the house. Good grief, is it really so unforgivable that she had a brief affair so long ago Yes, it was wrong and also wrong I suppose that she kept that secret, but marriages often get rocky and affairs happen that don't end the marriage. Goodness, it was 20 years ago!!!! So much rage was piled on Cate from her husband and the family of her young lover, that i felt was just too much. Was it so unforgivable? Wondering what others think about these characters condemning Cate??? Have an opinion to share?

    • @2309Kerstin
      @2309Kerstin 2 місяці тому

      I felt it was not just the affair, but also or perhaps more so her behaviour after the young man’s death. As it is being presented at that moment. It is also set up as a woman with life experience exploiting a teenager. I felt that the husband Robert was finally taking a stance for himself in his mind, and her actions were so immoral that he cannot bring himself to speak to her. Not the best way to behave, but I could see how it might happen.

    The story and its telling are marvelous. Acting is wonderful. But I am not convinced that Cathryn’s narrative is more accurate than the fictional book written by the mother. Cathryn failed to convince me that the story she told was not at least in part the fabrication of an accomplished writer who was experienced and adept at telling a tail that largely absolves her from any responsibility. A narrative casting her as a couger preying on an innocent naïve young man was a bit over the top. But portraying herself solely as victim did not ring true for me either. I seriously doubt that a woman in fear for her life could summons on demand the poses that made her look like a full-tilt seductress in the photos. Clearly we are supposed to believe her but I do not.

    • @HangingGarden606
      @HangingGarden606 Місяць тому +2

      I mean, how is a woman supposed to behave when being held at knifepoint whilst trying to not awake and ultimately drag her kid into a possible rape/homicide? The show is a pretty good illustration as to why women have historically not gone public with sexual assault cases. Definitely talk to women + learn about fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses.

    • @cahammernolastname2815
      @cahammernolastname2815 Місяць тому

      @ It is not about how a woman is SUPPOSED to behave. It is about how anyone WOULD behave. I doubt that even a trained actress could appear to be aggressively seductive while being threatened with grave bodily harm to herself and her child. Anyone so threatened would wear a look of terror rather than a look of seduction. Under extreme stress, demeanor does not lie.

    I just watched the first episode and I will stick with the entire thing. I can see what you mean about surprise twists in every episode. Spoiler ahead so don’t read past this point:
    I was almost 100% convinced by the end of the first episode that Catherine’s son was Jonathan’s and not her husband’s until he turned up as a small boy with her in Italy. I thought that was at the root, for Catherine, of her distance from Nicholas, her son. Knowing he wasn’t her husband’s boy filled her with such guilt that she couldn’t bond with him properly. And, ironically, father and son got along so well that she also couldn’t bear to come clean and possibly break up that relationship. Apparently, that’s not the case, though.

    It was great, right up to the lazy, unfulfilling end. It's as if they ran out of time. The cinematography was fantastic, acting was impeccable by all the actors and the direction was great. However, after spending almost 7 hours, the ending was flat and way too rushed. Without revealing spoilers, one of the characters "ah-ha moments," was ridiculous at best. Would I recommend this? Yes, but maybe next ti e they should give filmmakers more than 7 episodes to allow emotional endings time to breathe and let us "feel something."

    With top talents coming together in Disclaimer, expectations are high; however, after watching Episode 1, I was left feeling disappointed.
    The storytelling is laborious, filled with well-worn tricks and tropes that offer little novelty. Most troubling are the camera movements and the varying stylistic palettes applied to the three interconnected narratives. While these choices may be well-intended and meticulously crafted, they often render the scenes and character portrayals stagey and unconvincing.
    In attempting to elevate a rather predictable storyline, the series seems to have stripped away both thrills and emotional depth. The organic qualities that make for great storytelling and compelling character arcs are sorely missing.
    The most beautiful aspect of the episode is the gorgeously romantic song that plays at the end. Everything else in the episode is gorgeous too but is just beautiful to look at.
