Nevermore is absolutely incredible, not the song i would have started with though. You need to check out The River Dragon Has Come and This Godless Endeavor for sure.
Funnily, this is the song my channel (not this one) started off with and then we ended up doing a bunch of other Nevermore stuff and even got into Arch Enemy because Loomis is in there. But it's definitely not like their other songs for sure. It's probably great for people who aren't used to prog metal though.
I really hope Geebz listens to Godless Endeavour, I believe In Nothing really does not showcase how legendary Jeff Loomis is because he can do insane things eith the guitar
You really can't go wrong with any Nevermore. But if you want their "magnum opus" it has to be the title track off of their 2005 album, This Godless Endeavor.
This Godless Endeavor was my very first metal album (I bought it blindly at a store, mainly because I loved the cd-cover lol) and it changed my taste in music forever. Absolut masterpiece.
@@self1sch Absolutely the same for me too. I bought the CD at a store called Cheapo that no longer exist. But they let you listen to the album before you bought it which was super cool and an experience you can no longer get.
Holy Balls! Nevermore! Never thought I would see the day. "Believe in Nothing" is a great track, but its also probably their most radio-friendly. If you really want a trip, I would suggest "This Godless Endeavour". Allllright!
That entire album is just outstanding. It's the one that got me into Nevermore. Believe in nothing is somewhat of a ballad. Narcosynthesis is a good suggestion for one of their heavier songs.
Jeff loomis the guitar player is an absolute beast and one of my all time faves, the fact that he was totally serving the song here shows just how good he is! For me this is Andy Sneap’s (the producer) masterpiece 🤘
. . . but have you heard Andy Sneap on all 3 "Sabbat" albums. He was an exceptional guitarist in his own right. But Loomis . . . more folks should know about him, and Nevermore.
You really owe it to yourself to check out This Godless Endeavor (whether for a video or just for yourself). One of the most epic and perfect songs that exists in metal in my opinion.
Love this song. The River Dragon Has Come, Dreaming Neon Black, the cover of the Sound of Silence, This Godless Endeavor, Narcosynthesis; these are my favorite Nevermore songs. Jeff Loomis is a legendary guitarist and Warrell Dane has such an interesting voice.
Oh god! I never thought you would get around to this band! This makes me so excited! This band was one of the biggest influences on my writing and playing as a guitarist/bassist.
Fuck yes! River Dragon Has Come, Dreaming Neon Black, Poison God Machine, Tianamen Man, their version of Sound of Silence.... so many great songs! Your part about grunge is really interesting, as they are from Seattle and the core of the band was from a thrash band called Sanctuary (also really good, btw) that broke up just a year or so before. This song is one of many that uses some of those "Seattle sounds" like the layered hooks you mentioned, which is a classic Alice in Chains move.
I absolutely love Nevermore, but this is pretty atypical of a lot of their material. As other people have suggested The River Dragon Has Come and This Godless Endeavor, but I also love their version of The Sound of Silence.
Most underrated metal band of all time IMHO. Dane, Loomis, Sheppard and Williams (criminally underrated drummer) had that “something” special that very few bands have.
I would have suggested a different song, but still very happy that you've given the mighty Nevermore a spin! Please listen to something from The Politics of Ecstasy! Or This Godless Endeavour!
Ill never forget the first time i heard them. It was live at the Keyclub in Hollywood, 2001. I went there to see Opeth on their first US tour and they opened up for Nevermore. This was the album that they were touring for and it was such an amazing show. By the end of the show, the entire stage was filled with fans, dancing with Nevermore. I mean the entire stage. Awesome. Been a fan ever since and saw them a few times since then. RIP, Warrel Dane \m/
I was there as well! Went to see BOTH. Was into Nevermore since their debut and *Sanctuary.* Its funny isn't it about Mikael Akerfeldt, now practically a Stand-up comedian on stage, but then for the "Blackwater Park Tour", he was visibly amazed people were applauding and STUNNED that they could pull-off all they did live, and all he would say timidly; "Thank you, thank you very much" :). The 2nd Lead/Rhythm Guitarist that played with Loomis for Nevermore, was SUPER emotional, made intense faces and was really outstanding. I really dug his intensity, and always wanted to know if he was in another band. I would probably act the same way with that stage-presence if I were a guitarist in a band of that type of aggression and virtuosity. Wow . . . I remember that when all those people went up on stage! I especially remember a particular young brunette woman that was, well . . . If she was listening and singing along to a Nevermore song, I would have married her! :D She was a hottie! I think the track they sang was "The Heart Collector" if I'm not mistaken?
Cool to see this band pop up on your channel! Dead Heart In A Dead World, the record you picked this song from is incredibly good! Their follow-ups Enemies of Reality and This Godless Endeavor are killers too. Try to find the fast-paced tracks Geebz, you will be blown away. It is too bad the band no longer exists. Rest in peace Warrel Dane (vocalist) who died in 2017. Thanks again for adding Vexes to the list Geebz! 🤘
Give 'Born' by Nevermore a rip, also 'The Learning', 'Sentient 6' and 'Dreaming Neon Black' - Also, they broke up because vocalist Warrel Dane passed away. Thanks for the video bro, always like to hear your takes on music that I enjoy - Cheers!
*Very* nice catch with the Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds reference, as the singer of the band Warrel Dane had mentioned having influence from that song before. In an earlier song called This Sacrament, he even did a play on words with that title in the lyrics "Lucy in the sky, with diamond eyes/long since dark/I wear her disguise of light...". So that was a meaningful catch in this piece, so many years later for them!
I love Nevermore! Would love to see you check out their cover of "The Sound of Silence", "This Godless Endeavor", or "The River Dragon Has Come". Or "We Disintegrate" is an oddball but I love it =)
I’ve been a Metal fan for many moons. I’ve always enjoyed the power , lyrics and over all combinations that a band produces. I just don’t have the ear to really point out each individual instruments contribution to each song ( I just know it sounds good and I like it). But how you break down the instruments and what their sound brings to the song , really opens up a new way of listening to a song I already loved. It makes it that much more enjoyable seeing it through a different lens . It’s almost like hearing the song for the first time . Thank you. I will continue to follow!
This was my friend's band, but around the time I met him (or rather our Wives became friends) about a year later the band broke up... He has started two new bands since then though "Ghostship Octavius" and "Ashes of Ares" so check those out too!
@@Lokrion yep! He’s a really nice guy and sadly lost his wife to cancer a few years back. She was a work friend of my wife’s and through them I met Van, and he generously sent me a bunch of shirts and CDs and stuff back when Obsidian Conspiracy came out, and then it turned out we are both artists too and had that in common etc. He’s a great drummer and a hell of a guy, a lot of talent there.
One of my favorite bands ever!!! Had the please of seeing them live years back. Yeah I agree I would have picked a different song from their catalog but a good choice none the less. Jeff Loomis is a huge influence for me. RIP Warrel Dane.
I was never into this band but this one song was on a tape I had when I was a teenager, such a catchy tune. Great example of those 'stacked' power chords where you add the 5th on the top string
I'm a huge Nevermore fan. I only found them a year or two ago, being a big metal fan, and loving complex guitar parts, they just never came up in the conversation or the algorithm. Very underrated in the cultural/ metal zeitgeist. If you want to see the band's best work, you should check out the This Godless Endeavor album. Almost every song on it is great (all the ones written primarily by Jeff Loomis, the main guitar player). You can also check out Jeff's solo work, or his work with Keith Merrow Conquering Dystopia for excellent playing. To get the guitar sounds, you're right, Jeff Loomis plays all the parts about perfectly twice. There's a breakdown with him and a producer on UA-cam where they play the two DI tracks of a riff, and they're basically identical. From what I've read, most of the sounds from this album are a combination of Mesa Boogie and Diezel amps, with various levels of blending and micing techniques. Hard to copy exactly, but you can get close enough. Overall Jeff is a really tight, amazing player. They play 7 strings, with everything down a half step (EVH tuning, with a low A flat 7th string), except maybe 1 or 2 songs that are in drop C# on a 6 string. Oh and during this era, he put an extra thick bass string on in that 7th string position. He later went away from it, because nobody can really tell, but that's part of the mystery of the guitar sound. Musically, the highlights from the This Godless Endeavor album are The Psalm of Lydia, Born, My Acid Words, This Godless Endeavor. Lyrically, I would check out the songs Medicated Nation, Final Product, Sentient 6 and This Godless Endeavor. (Like I said, an amazing album, especially for coming out in 2005). On their other albums, a few highlights are The Obsidian Conspiracy, Without Morals, Termination Proclamation, I Voyager, Tomorrow Turned into Yesterday, Narcosynthesis, The River Dragon has Come, Inside Four Walls. Their earlier albums aren't as well composed in my opinion, but there are some gems in the Politics of Ecstasy and Dreaming Neon Black.
You should react to the singer/guitarist, Warrel Dane's (RIP) solo album Praises To The War Machine. Nice blend of heavy (When We Pray) and mellow (Chosen Misery).
Yay, *Geebz* 😀! One of the greatest bands of all time! Quick bullet points on *Nevermore:* • Formed in 1991 • Went _inactive_ in 2011 - In April 2015, lead singer *Warrel Dane* confirmed that *Nevermore* had _not_ disbanded • Dane, a co-founder, died on 13 December 2017, *R.I.P.* 😢; no reunion would be coming • This album was recorded in July 2000 • The Production, Engineering, Mixing _and_ Mastering on this album is _perfect_ because it was done by *the God of Mixing & Mastering, Andy Sneap* 🙏 • This is my personal _favourite_ from their songs, such _thoughtful_ lyrics 🤔!
Nevermore is one of my favorite bands and I can say I was lucky enough to see them live about half a dozen times back in the late 90ies to early 2000's and even met the band on a couple of occasions. Every album of theirs has a unique take on their style and is full of great tracks. Personally, I'm partial to their 1996 album "The Politics of Ecstasy." The last track off that album, "The Learning", is absolutely phenomenal and lyrically is a deep exploration of the concept of AI. Unfortunately, their vocalist passed away in 2017, so there is almost no chance of a reunion in the future. Their guitarist, Jeff Loomis, is astoundingly good and is currently in Arch Enemy, although most agree that he is brutally underutilized in that band. He also has some solo and collaborative instrumental releases he's done over the years, as well as a plethora of guest guitar work for tons of projects. I would say this song is great, but it really doesn't showcase Loomis's ability; the solo and rhythm riffs are very tame by his standards.
I think The River Dragon has come should be next! Also an underrated song by them is The Seven Tongues of God. I think you would have quite a bit to say about both of these songs for sure.
I used to listen to this album a lot back in the day. I was far more at home with black and death metal at the time but there was something so alluring about this album. Great track from an interesting album.
So i never knew about this version of this song, my only experience with it is the All That Remains cover on their Overcome album which had no mention of it being a cover. So cool to see its original form!
What the what? Nevermore? Hell yeah let's do this. Edit: Not sure I would have started with this song but Dane's vocals on this track still gives me goosebumps.
They came from the end of Sanctuary. Warrel Dane had one of the most distinctive voices that I have ever heard. If only Sanctuary could have continued. RIP Warrel Dane
Really Happy to see you review Nevermore! Highly underrated band. I agree with kyle, The river Dragon has come would be a better choice. R.I.P Warrel Dane, we lost a legend with his passing
One of my favorite bands. Thanks Geeb for noticing them and for judging them. A very underrated band, they always deserved more. ❤❤ I reccomanded Sanctuary, old/new heavy band by rhe same vocalist... RIP Warrel Dane. BTW. As someone writes above / below, this is not the best song to evaluate Nevermore's music ... It is too calm and does not exactly represent the musical style of this band. Try "Sound of silence", S & G cover 😉😉
Its funny because i just started to relisten to Nevermore yesterday lol but, while this isnt a bad choice for a first timer, id say that it doesnt fully encapsulate the band (this is a lot more mellow) If you wanna do some bangers next time id suggest : Born, The psalm of Lydia, A future uncertain, Seed awakening, Never purify, Ambivalent (last 3, listen to the remastered and remixed version)
You should be sticking some of their earlier gothic thrash stuff in there too: I Am the Dog, Poison Godmachine, Next in Line, In Memory, What Tomorrow Knows, The Learning. I think they were even better, and certainly more original, back then...
Nothing is sacred when no one is saved Nothing's forever so count your days Nothing is final and no one is real Pray for tomorrow and find your empty still
What you said about the solo is perfect, especially because Jeff Loomis is one of the greatest shredders in history :) This song is a very radio-friendly one, they have many other interesting songs, a perfect band for one of your deep dives/slowburns
Nevermore is so great, it’s hard to pick songs. This one isn’t entirely representative of their sound, but I do think it showcases their smart songwriting abilities. If you want their magnum opus (in my opinion), you have to check out This Godless Endeavor. It’s a 9 minute beast of a track that just flies by. Other quality songs: Narcosynthesis, Final Product, Born. It’s really hard to go wrong with any tracks from Dead Heart in a Dead World or This Godless Endeavor.
The guitarist from Forced Entry joined this band at some point. If you want to be blown away by by a a little known band, you should try "Bone Crackin' Fever" by Forced Entry.
The Heart Collector is a criminally underrated song from Nevermore. They are probably my favorite band of all time. RIP Warrell Dane! Such an astounding singer.
This might be one of their more radio friendly and straightforward tracks but it's a song I love nonetheless. It makes me nostalgic for when I discovered it 13-14 years ago. With that being said, Nevermore have many great tracks you'll love Geebz. This is from one of their best albums. A few songs I can recommend from this album alone that I bet you'll enjoy - The Heart Collector, The River Dragon Has Come and Insignificant. Songs that send chills down my spine.
So glad other people have brought up The River Dragon Has Come so I don't have to hahaha. What I can suggest is that you check out Born of Osiris - Follow The Signs (in your free time) and compare the guitar solo from The River Dragon Has Come to Follow The Signs. To my non-musician's ears, they sound eerily similar (although I know they're played differently) and they both start at like 3:17 in their respective songs lol. **EDIT: Would love to see you break down the two songs if you choose to react to The River Dragon Has Come
Awesome! Nevermore is a truly unique band. If you take reccomendations, i would give you three songs that are amazing in my opinion and very different to each other: Dreaming Neon Black, Sentient 6 and, of course, The River Dragon Has Come
Nevermore is a fantastic band, one of the best Prog metal bands out there, sadly Warrel Dane (the vocalist) passed away a couple years back from a heart attack while on tour in South America. He really had one hell of an awesome voice. Jeff Loomis, the lead guitarist, is one of the best in the industry, he now plays lead guitar for Arch Enemy. As far as suggestions, literally any song from Dreaming Neon Black (this is a concept album about Warrel Dane's fiance that went missing and is presumed dead after she got involved in a cult) is fantastic, though personally i like "Decontruction" and "No More Will" (the guitar solo in this song is just fuckin amazing). "The River Dragon Has Come", "The Sound of Silence" (they do a very unique rendition of this song), and "Dead Heart, In A Dead World" all great songs from the album of the same name. other great songs "This Godless Endeavor", "The Politics of Ecstacy", and "I, Voyager"
A sorely under reacted to band. So much talent in one band should have been illegal. Dreaming Neon Black is their best album and best song. Thank you for giving this band its due. RIP Warrel Dane.
Since you reacted to Disturbed's interpretation of The Sound Of Silence, you should definitely check out Nevermore's rendition. Without spoiling it, it's a wildly different take on the song. And, it is far more representative of what Nevermore's overall sound is, much more so than Believe in Nothing (as great as it is).
Nevermore is the most underrated band of their time period, in fact, nevermore began out of the ashes of a band called sanctuary, that was from Seattle and being pushed towards grunge from the record label. Warrel Dane (singer) passed in 2017 leaving an unfinished sanctuary album and solo album, both unfinished and had some stuff released posthumously. Also Jeff Loomis is a bit of a hometown hero, from my own hometown of appleton wi. I can't count the number of hours I spent yelling angry nevermore lyrics. This is definitely their more power ballad song, but they have some power and thrashy stuff, and proggy too, dead heart in a dead world, or perhaps seed awakening would show those sides of the band. Along with what everyone else is suggesting. Anyway, top 5 band for me
2022 and Nevermore is more actual than ever. I recommend the album Dreaming Neon Black (specially the homonymous song)... for me, it's probably the melancholic Metal album ever if you consider the inspiration for it. Cheers! EDIT: The song "The Politics of Ecstasy" may be the more actual song by Nevermore. Wrote in 1996, feels like it predicted 2022 spot on
Ahh Nevermore, my absolute dearest band in metal. Started listening when I was 12, roughly, so have know them about 20 years at this point. I have a hard time suggesting songs of them though as they have so many colours: There's the trippy grittiness of the Politics of Ecstasy, the mournful madness of Dreaming Neon Black, tight metal anthems of Dead Heart in a Dead World, frantically groovy Enemies of Reality, the virtuosity of this Godless Endeavor, the overstrained The Obsidian Conspiracy... Through every phase they have an intellectual curiosity with themes of spirituality, politics & morality. Seminal songs for me would be The Seven Tongues of God, The Tiananmen Man, Beyond Within, Dreaming Neon Black, Narcosynthesis, The River Dragon Has Come, Enemies of Reality, I, Voyager, Born, This Godless Endeavor, The Termination Proclamation, And the Maiden Spoke... But they've mostly been more of an album experience for me
Actually the reason they disbanded is because the singer Warrel Dane died. R.I.P. legend, he had one of the most unique vocals.🤘🏻 His first band "Sanctuary" was also very good, they only have 3 albums and a demo CD.
Nevermore is absolutely incredible, not the song i would have started with though. You need to check out The River Dragon Has Come and This Godless Endeavor for sure.
This Godless Endeavor is a must. Such a perfect song imo.
Very true

• Went _inactive_ in 2011
- In April 2015, lead singer *Warrel Dane* confirmed that *Nevermore* had _not_ disbanded
• Dane, a co-founder, died on 13 December 2017, *R.I.P.* 😢; no reunion would be coming
• This album was recorded in July 2000
• The Production, Engineering, Mixing _and_ Mastering on this album is _perfect_ because it was done by *the God of Mixing & Mastering, Andy Sneap* 🙏
• This is my personal _favourite_ from their songs, such _thoughtful_ lyrics 🤔!
Check out Dream in Neon Black from Nevermore.
One of my top 5 bands all time. Jeff Loomis can shred but knows when to just be melodic. River Dragon.
Brilliant old album. Loved it back then, still like it 😀
I think The River Dragon has come should be next! Also an underrated song by them is The Seven Tongues of God. I think you would have quite a bit to say about both of these songs for sure.
Thanks for the decomposition Geebz, as always.
My favourite Nevermore song. This was the song that got me into them in high school.
I used to listen to this album a lot back in the day. I was far more at home with black and death metal at the time but there was something so alluring about this album. Great track from an interesting album.
Wow. Blown away to see this on here. Nevermore are definitely a top five for me.
I just discovered nevermore this year, really surprised me. Hope you can get around to more of their songs
This Godless Endeavor is a masterpiece 👌. I really hope you get to the title track at some point.
Year of the Voyager, great Nevermore video/concert to watch.
“Enemies of Reality” is where I would have started you
Great song from great album.
❤❤
I reccomanded Sanctuary, old/new heavy band by rhe same vocalist... RIP Warrel Dane.
BTW. As someone writes above / below, this is not the best song to evaluate Nevermore's music ... It is too calm and does not exactly represent the musical style of this band. Try "Sound of silence", S & G cover 😉😉
Its funny because i just started to relisten to Nevermore yesterday lol but, while this isnt a bad choice for a first timer, id say that it doesnt fully encapsulate the band (this is a lot more mellow)
If you wanna do some bangers next time id suggest : Born, The psalm of Lydia, A future uncertain, Seed awakening, Never purify, Ambivalent (last 3, listen to the remastered and remixed version)
You should be sticking some of their earlier gothic thrash stuff in there too: I Am the Dog, Poison Godmachine, Next in Line, In Memory, What Tomorrow Knows, The Learning. I think they were even better, and certainly more original, back then...
The River Dragon Has Come, and Heart Collector might be a good next choice :D
Nothing is sacred when no one is saved
Nothing's forever so count your days
Nothing is final and no one is real
Pray for tomorrow and find your empty still
This is the mellow side, obsidian conspiracy. little heavy, just bit. Finally someone valid is checking them out. Thank brother. Be well
This is start of one of the best guitar player to come around in a good while, mr Loomis is presume
sentient 6! or the river dragon has come are my suggestions. thus makes me so happy nevermore will ALWAYS tug at my heart wonderful band.
On the Nevermore train 👌🤘 This Godless Endeavor (the song) is a masterpiece. Hope you get to decompose it.
This Godless Endeavour is an absolute must for this band
What you said about the solo is perfect, especially because Jeff Loomis is one of the greatest shredders in history :)
This song is a very radio-friendly one, they have many other interesting songs, a perfect band for one of your deep dives/slowburns
You NEED to do the title track of this album. Dead Heart In A Dead World is a ridiculous track showcasing their varied sound.
This song is too good. Great pick!
Great! Spot on! Next suggestion would be This Godless endeavor by Nevermore ;-)
Also interesting to note, their album Politics of Ecstasy featured Pat O'Brian from Cannibal Corpse on guitar.
If you take reccomendations, i would give you three songs that are amazing in my opinion and very different to each other: Dreaming Neon Black, Sentient 6 and, of course, The River Dragon Has Come
Nevermore we’re an amazing band. This song doesn’t really sound like the majority of their catalog. I would to hear you review some more.
RIP Warrel Dane
This Godless Endeavor is THE Nevemore song, deff gotta check that out \../
check out horrendous - stranger, would love to see your reaction. Would love to see some more death metal on here
R.I.P. Warrel
A sorely under reacted to band. So much talent in one band should have been illegal. Dreaming Neon Black is their best album and best song. Thank you for giving this band its due. RIP Warrel Dane.
Might as well check out their music video for "Final Product"
I've requested "the river dragon has come" multiple times....
SYSTEM CHECK, NEON BLACK!
Anyway, top 5 band for me
1991-1993 was the end of metal at the time, but also some of the best metal was released right at that time.
Nevermore's This Godless Endeavor album is a top 10 metal album for me. Probably top 5 of the last 30 years.
My favorite band of all times and one of my favorite songs by them. "The Heart Collector" tops them all, by the way.
That melody definitely reminds me of something...
Wrote in 1996, feels like it predicted 2022 spot on
Dude, you need to do This Godless Endeavor!
Ahh Nevermore, my absolute dearest band in metal. Started listening when I was 12, roughly, so have know them about 20 years at this point.
I have a hard time suggesting songs of them though as they have so many colours:
There's the trippy grittiness of the Politics of Ecstasy, the mournful madness of Dreaming Neon Black, tight metal anthems of Dead Heart in a Dead World, frantically groovy Enemies of Reality, the virtuosity of this Godless Endeavor, the overstrained The Obsidian Conspiracy...
