@@thegamerzoologist2705 erm, he did a lot of work behind the scenes in order to protect the people, he was a good Avatar but in the people's eyes he was terrible. His life was ruined by the corrupted spirits which was Yangchen's failure. One Avatar's mistakes leads to another to solve. I'd suggest reading the Kyoshi novels because he definitely wasn't selfish nor did he use his powers to impress, that was him putting on an act whilst he sacrifices his life for the people. Yangchen's mistakes led to Kuruk's early death and him having to neglect the typical Avatar duties of diplomacy etc which in turn led to Kyoshi being left in a difficult state. Kuruk certainly did a lot of work to maintain stability between spirits and humans but in an unconventional way and he was forced to neglect the typical Avatar duties, he wasn't selfish however.
Major props to Kyoshi, she spent 200 years of her life fixing the world's problems so the burdens of her life wouldn't fall on the next avatar. Too bad the 100 year war began during Roku's time
Can you imagine Sozin trying to start a war and Kyoshi's just trying to figure out whether she should turn his internal organs into an ice block or blow him into the comet.
You can't blame Roku though. Would you instantly kill a life long childhood friend because they did one bad thing? Roku thought he got the message and would leave the other nations alone.
Splitting islands is the biggest feat of earth bending in the entire lore. Even in the thinnest of places, Earth’s crust is about 3.1 miles thick. Even if Kyoshi island is only a square mile big, that’s the equivalent of roughly 3.1miles cubed of Earth to move, not to mention she would have had to bend a MILE LONG stream of lava at least 3.1 miles up from the mantle to create the lava stream we see in the show. Even lowballing it as much as I could, that’s more power than any avatar has shown period.
Fun fact: kiyoshi’s earthbending was powerful but she had trouble doing small stuff. She had an easier time throwing boulders than just lifting a pebble.
It's quite similar to how we learn to control our fingers, if you ever noticed babies use their whole fist to lift even the tiniest of things because they can't move each finger seperately, also they grab things tightly because they can't control how tight their grip has to be to hold an object
@@blackenedfeatherz9503 probably that by making entire volcanoes erupt the dude is downplaying that avatar's abilities by saying "he could at least lava bend". There is lava bending and then there is the power to cause natural disasters.

Neglected to mention that Yangchen could use air bending to literally weaponize her screams and developed the now forbidden technique of creating an air vacuum to suffocate her intended targets. The same technique Zaheer used on a smaller scale to end the earth queen’s life and the same technique theorized that Monk Giasto used on his last stand against a room full of firebenders.
Yeah her and Kyoshi were truly bad bitches. I think Yangchen even rumored to have actually killed in her duty as Avatar too? A huge sacrifice as an air nomad.
@@katyprarieWell she did tell Aang that his duty as the Avatar is far greater than his morals as an Air Nomad when he asked how he could defeat the Fire Lord without killing him. She didn’t even beat around the bush she just told him straight
Y'all remember when Aang was trying to prove that Kyoshi wasn't a merciless, cold blooded killer then she came back and was like "Yeah, nah I killed all them MFers and I'd gladly do it again!". Good times
I love that different avatars all have different weaknesses and strength and that they're not all "perfect" in any way. Having friends and trust is good but Roku let the world suffer. Having determination is good but when would Kyoshi be evil without finding another way? I love the concept of each avatar finding their own way instead of them all following some principles and rules. They share love for others and care but they all have unique perspectives and methods to fulfilling their prophecy. Avatar the last Airbender did such a good job with including philosophy and politics and a very emotional and practical way. I learned so much from the show, especially from my new Uncle (Iroh).
She's doesn't enjoy killing, but she is uncompromising in doing what she had to do to stop conflict. Aang is strictly a pacifist, so it make sense that they would be at ends.

it was actually used as a healing technic too, she would freeze dying peoples blood and hearts until they could get proper medical aid, like what they do for brain surgeries nowadays.
The heart freezing technique isn't bloodbending, Kyoshi used an advanced healing technique to deliberately lower Yun's heart to a freezing temperature so he would die.
Don't dissrespect my boi Kuruk, the reason he didn't do much of his other avatar duties, was because yangchen didn't give a shit about the spirit world, which led to kuruk having to take care of it, which also led to him dying really young
True the kuruk slander has to stop, he got screwed over by yang chen because she ignored the spirit world so he died early because of the spirit corruption and when fighting dark spirits he just threw hands instead of bending, he punched father glow worm so hard he almost made a hole to the spirit world
My man Kuruk went 1v1 with Koh the face stealer and almost killed him. This means Kuruk battled Koh and probably took as good as he got and he did it all without showing ANY emotion. Because Koh can one shot you by stealing your face if you show the slightest bit of any emotion. Imagine gettin stabbed by one of those legs of his and not being able to scream or get angry as you fight back. Man's was hardcore.
Avatar is so fucking good. The lore, the range of unique characters and their development and how the characters are integral to the plot development, the whole thing is very well designed and written. Any suggestions for other shows that have all of these things mentioned?
You did a disservice to Kuruk…. Yangchen left him with spirits so pissed off due to the fact that she overwhelmingly sided with humans in conflicts. Kuruk single-handedly protected the human world by CONSTANTLY fighting off spirits which LITERALLY drained his life from him, hence why he died young. The toll on his body was so severe he turned to hedonistic pleasures to escape the pain he inflicted on himself fighting off these spirits that were so damn riled up because of Yangchen.
Yep. It outwardly looked like he was neglecting his duty as the Avatar because in secret, he was carrying out missions in the Spirit World cleaning up the messes that Yangchen left.
Kyoshi learned to replace the broken and damaged parts of her body with earth. She died at 230 or something like that. And on top of all that she didn’t become to weak to stop keeping herself alive she CHOSE TO DIE. She’s was like, ehhh it’s someone’s else turn to do this shit.
Kyoshi did not need to bend - she could just instantly kill. There is no reason to puppeteer a corpse. Also, no other water bender froze people solid but Kyoshi. Different abilities, kinda
Everyone acts like Kyoshi is some violence loving fiend But the reality is she realized she had the power to stop oppression and bring justice, and she wasnt afraid to call out the greed of nobles causing people to suffer beneath their hunger for more. She put a stop to it, and became a force of power keeping balance in the world through direct action And that is so fierce
Yeah, even in the new series she says that Avatars and how they choose to deal with events are products of their times. Avatars who were alive at a time when things weren't as bad didn't have to do as much, and Avatars, like Kiyoshi had to do a lot, as the world suffered the consequences after Kuruk didn't fulfil his earthly duties, as he had his own issues, leaving Kiyoshi to pick up the pieces. Even though obviously none of this is real, even theoretically people need to give all the avatars a break. Like the whole "Aang left for 100 years, it's his fault cause he ran away!" Always bothered me. Like 1, he didn't intend to run away forever he was literally 12 and just needed to think, he couldn't have known he would have to preserve his and Appas life by freezing them, or that the fire nation would genocide his people. I like the new series because although it is different from the comics and cartoon, Gyatso talked about that. Even if Aang had stayed he couldn't have defeated the fire nation, he would've just died and another avatar, who also wouldn't have been able to defeat the fire nation as a literal baby, would've had to deal with it.
Why do people equate diplomatic prowess as weakness. If you can stop bloodshed from taking place before it even started, you just saved more lives and won the battle.
Excusing bad examples and misplaced vitriol, most people equate it to weakness because in most situations (in fiction) the ‘Diplomat’ is someone who avoids violence to the point of not being able to inflict it when needs must. People simply assume it’s some shade of this trope, and act accordingly.
We are talking about actual power and physical strength to impact your will in this world. Mental strength and wisdom is cool but that's not what we mean on this scale
Kyoshi didn’t even care that Aang was on trial for crimes. She confessed and was like « Deal with it. Y’all are lucky I’m not still here » 😂. I’m wondering how she died after finding the secret to immortality 🤔. Maybe she just didn’t wanna work anymore after building her island. Kinda like how Toph quit being a police chief so she could be more spiritually aligned and less of slave to justice. « The names change, but the streets stay the same »
From what I remember, I believe Kyoshi allowed herself to pass away of old age because all of her loved ones had already passed away as well, so why not leave with them?
Kuruk genuinely be the strongest. He faced the most tough opponents. Dark Spirits are are so strong they take years of your life away from you. Even the Avatar suffers from it.
@comdnt604 Every time he purified/killed a dark spirit, it was at the cost of a part of his own soul due to the spirits being so pissed off about yangchen neglecting him. This not only affected his mind, but also his body and after every fight he'd seize uncontrollably. So basically he was already half dead during his encounter with father glow worm and during the death battle he punched the spirit so hard it ripped a hole in the spirit world
Yes he never bragged about it because he didn’t want people to think badly of Yangchen, she focused too much on human affairs and neglected spiritual affairs. So spirits got angry Kuruk hunted those vengeful spirits which put him on Kohs radar who took the face of the woman Kuruk loved in retribution
kuruk also had to dedicate his life to balancing the spirit world because that aspect of the avatar’s duties were neglected by yang chen and his involvement shortened his life span
@@namegeneric9344 i wouldn’t say “racist” but yangchen notoriously neglected the spirit world in its entirety, she did not deal with anything in there despite being the bridge between worlds and responsible for both the real world and the spirit world, Kuruk was hated in the real world because he had to spend all his time cleaning up Yangchens mess in the spirit world, which in turn left the real world a mess for kyoshi, who then cleaned everything up so the next avatar would not have to deal with it, and it worked, until Rokus death sparked the 100 year war, thus leaving a mess for aang to clean up, which is also aangs own mess, so yeah. Yangchen ignored spirit world, leaving it a mess for Kuruk Kuruk ignored real world, leaving it a mess for kyoshi Kyoshi managed everything not leaving any mess for Roku Roku mismanaged Sozin eventually leading to his death and leaving a mess for aang Aang fled, leaving a mess for himself, which he cleaned up and prepared the next avatar with plenty of training and such And then Korra came in and pretty much killed the avatar but that’s a story for another time

Kuruk absolutely did not neglect his avatar duties. He was fighting in the spirit world so frequently that his body tore itself apart. He did this whilst telling nobody about it, as to not have his friends and lover become infected by the spirit world as he was. His predecessor (yang chen), whom everyone thought was the greatest, favoured humans in every decision - leaving Kuruk with the task of fixing it. Kuruk is the greatest there ever was
THANK YOU 🙏 People like the creator of this video fail to realize that, Kuruk should definitely be higher on this list because of how much chaos he endured to protect the human world from angry spirits
If I got a nickel for every time a water avatar had terrible luck with spirits I'd have two nickels it's not a lot but it's crazy that it happened twice
I would say the thing that makes Kioshi so powerful is how ruthless she could be. She was an earth ender at heart and that drive and resilience carried over into everything making her incredibly well trained, powerful and dangerous.
She didn't enjoy killing though, she was just willing to do whatever it took to achieve and maintain balance and peace, and was in typical earthbender nature, unmoving in her resolve
Kyoshi isn’t anymore heartless then any other Avatar they all told Aang to kill the fire lord. She “killed” one dude who Aang even says she didn’t kill
When was it stated she was ever ruthless? She told Aang the exact same thing every other Avatar did and the 1 kill that was mentioned in the show you can argue that she didn’t even kill him. He was just too stubborn to move off of the damn cliff and fell to his death
kuruk Is massively underrated bro had to handle spirits which are very much more difficult then humans to deal with because Yangchen wasn’t feeling to deal with them
He is worst avatar I think. He didn't anything. He is water bender like wan and korra but korra and wan changed all over the world. Bu he didn't. He was killed qt young age by souls
All previous avatars when aang asks what he should do to ozai: do what you think is right my guy Kiyoshi: kill him Aang: ... You mean- Kiyoshi: did I stutter?
Kyoshi didn't actually enjoy murder, only resorting to it as a last option. Even after getting garroted with a wire with glasse embedded along it she didn't kill the person who did it to her.
To be fair, she actually said “Justice” which was just vague enough (like the advice the other avatar’s gave Aang) for Aang to come to his own conclusion
@@paawan3764 No. common misconception. The avatar themselves is a person who in base form has their own strengths. They only get a power up from the other Avatars while in the avatar state and even then most of the power comes from Raava. The avatar state grants the experiences and techniques of the previous avatars which is why they are able to use each other’s moves while in the avatar state (ex the elemental ball) and depending on how their connection is with the avatar spirit they can gain a multiplier to their base form. That is why Korra’s avatar state was much weaker then Aangs even when she had all the past lives. But like I said, even with the multiplier it’s still scales from the avatars base form, perfect ex: Kyoshi was waaaay more powerful then Roku. Roku lost to a Vulcano at age 60, Kyoshi was moving islands at age 100. Kyoshi the strongest base form and was shown in the books to have a incredibly strong connection to her avatar spirit which is why she can manifest feats no one else can. -> Kyoshi is the strongest avatar
@@andrithorkristensson2545 Right. That's what I was thinking. Kyoshi would spank aang base form but I think in the avatar state, they might be evenly matched because Aang also has a great spiritual connection and he has the skills and experience from Kyoshi. @@paawan3764 I mean my counter argument for that is just why don’t we see Aang do the insane freets we see Kyoshi do then? Why isn’t he moving mountains and redirecting rivers in his avatar state like Kyoshi could do. What do you mean? She learned how to balance the cells in her body to become immortal, and only died at the age of 230 because she had done what she needed to in the world, and thought it best that the Avatar Cycle continued.
It’s also interesting to note just how powerful Aangs spirit was. It was confirmed that the reason he died at 60 was bc of the energy he spent preserving his body in ice. It’s possible that it was literally his spiritual energy keeping him alive, and that he died in a similar way to Kuruk since it was deeply spent. Him and Korra honestly have the strongest spirits. Korra survived having Raava ripped out of her. That’s gotta be like losing a tailed beast😭
we dont know others could survive or not... it is the plot... also korra's spirit bending more like she only can use because of the situation! :S so only because of chaos (even aang could use to get back others bending power!)
Funny how Yangchen is the most brutal avatar out if them all because bro was legit Pulling air out ppl, violating ears, and basically giving Kuruk an easy time by making everyone fear airbenders and avatars.

Kurk was seen as a bad avatar but hé fixed the mistakes Yangchen, because she didn't do a thing for the spirits and he didn't told anyone what he was doing in the spirit world because Yangchen was a popular avatar among the people. Actually Kuruk was one of the best avatars ever
I have the same reaction! Now I need to know where the hell this happened. Honestly I'm not sure I believe the writers would put IMMORTALITY in a series about rebirth. Edit: looked in the wiki, she still died when she was 230 years old. While that's pretty old I wouldn't call it actually immortality. Side note: immorality doesn't really make a person any stronger if they can be killed as easily as a mortal person.
When writeing the back story for these characters, writers f'd up and accidentally made the timeline like 300 years between the water bender and Roku, so the explanation i guess is that she mastered immortality.
It’s more like “never aging” vs true immortality. She was like 230 years old and was still making islands and junk. She was on demon time her whole life tbh
Considering that aang had only a year after finding out about being the avatar before fighting a comet enhanced Sozin, I would consider him the strongest. Yes kyoshi was a very powerful avatar but she had a lot more time to train once she found out she was an avatar.
Comparisons with different ages are difficult. Kyoshi in the comics in just a few years of training learned the elements and froze someone's organs. She's as much of a prodigy as Korra and Aang. I put Korra and Kyoshi above because they don't hold back.
Kuruk is actually a great spiritual avatar cause he spent most of his life after his wife died fighting evil spirits in the spirit world. It seemed like he didn't care because he did neglect the physical world
technically aang is when he's in the avatar state, because he has the knowledge and skill of every past avatar, and kyoshi could only split the mainland with the skill of the past lives, but aang has all of those skills automatically, but it's not Korra because she cut the ties with the past avatars. (technically unaloq did that for her)
@@alasandrame2542 maybe if she had a better connection to her past lives, because she doesn't have as good of one as aang does, but by season four if that never happened Korra would definitely be the strongest
I'm glad this wasn't the usual oversaturated "strongest" list, that just make who we know and love the strongest, but actually takes a deeper look at things. Not saying that I agree or disagree with your choices, but this is definitely different from what usually comes on these lists. Kioshi was definitely one of the most powerful Avatars
Fun fact about the avatar cycle: the following avatar has to clean up the former avatars messes they made. Zeto was born into poverty in the fire nation due to it being struggling so he focused his entire life on its betterment, this lead to him ignoring most of the other nations and over prosperity for the fire nation. Yang Chen had to deal with the other nations due to zeto only focusing on the fire nation, she was deified and made into a saint basically but she fully neglected the spirit world during her tenure as avatar due to having to repair the issues with the entire human world. Kuruk had to deal with all the angry spirits Yang Chen left behind because of her sole focus on the human world, as a result kuruk was treated as a do nothing avatar while fighting countless dark spirits which gave his spirit sickness (super cancer) and he died at the age of 33, leaving the world too early and in a massive state of disrepair. Kyoshi entered the world in this hazardous state of disrepair, kuruk’s team avatar was still alive and ready but had no clue who the avatar was and assumed it was someone else, and kyoshi had to deal with SO MUCH SHIT, that she became immortal in order to make sure she didn’t pull a kuruk and leave the world in a bad state. As a result the world was in such a state of peace that there were no wars in kyoshi’s late life or in the decades after it. She lived for 230 years and died of literal boredom. Unfortunately, if kyoshi didn’t live so long, we wouldn’t have Roku, she also did such a good job as avatar that this made Roku a lackadaisical avatar who was never really forced to make hard decisions in his life, because of this, he failed to see his friend as an adversary until he literally died. As a result; he got the air nationed genocided.(why did he fight the volcano?!?) Aang when he was born had all this legacy to live up to and ran from it being 12. Woke up 100 years later and had to clean up roku’s mess. Years later, after the war he founded republic city on land from the earth nation that were fire nation colonies at the time, and made peace in the world: unfortunately, he did rather neglect the non benders in society and because of his failure to kill yakone or value for all life, even yakone, Korra almost lost her bending to a radicalized group of non benders lead by yakone’s son. Being the avatar literally means cleaning up your past lives messes.
Korra got her bending blocked but she literally regains it at the season finale, sooooooo. And also the Non bending arc was just season 1, the only other time Korra has to deal with the past bullshit was in season 3 when she had to deal with the red lotus a group that just should have been killed instead of locked up. Season 2 (unalaaq) and season 4 (Kuvira’s earth empire) were new problems entirely independent from prior Avatars that Korra had to deal with. It’s unknown if Korra will leave any problems for the new earth bending cyberpunk avatar, but she seems to have cleaned up a lot.
I feel like you need to look at that specific avatars way of life. Kyoshi wasn’t afraid of killing, this meant there wasn’t a single thing she wouldn’t do to save the world. Aang couldn’t do it because of his way of life, so he found a new way. Taking someone’s bending away. And I feel like that’s worse than death, when you take someone’s way of life away. That’s badass-
Avatar Kuruk never gets enough credit as an avatar, his predecessor avatar Yangchen states that because of her not fulfilling her duties with the spirit real during his life time kuruk had to pick up where she left and try to bring balance between spirits and humans. A consequence of this is him losing his wife to the face stealer koh On top of it all his legacy was forever tarnished & his death brought about too soon at the age of 34. One of the youngest avatars to ever die. He deserves more recognition.
Kyoshi was just built different But we cannot undermine Aang he was a beast on it's right like my man learned every single element faster than I can lose weight I still want a series made of him during his adulthood I want too see how much powerful he became after he had plenty of time to train and get used to his bending

She took the spirit world 100% for granted and in devastation with broken lies/promises that benefited humans. The avatar is meant to be the bridge for both.

But yeah all that to say Kiyoshi did what she had to do, and everything happens for a reason.
Why do people equate diplomatic prowess as weakness. If you can stop bloodshed from taking place before it even started, you just saved more lives and won the battle.
Bcuz many action show fans hv a poor concept of measuring power level.
Excusing bad examples and misplaced vitriol, most people equate it to weakness because in most situations (in fiction) the ‘Diplomat’ is someone who avoids violence to the point of not being able to inflict it when needs must. People simply assume it’s some shade of this trope, and act accordingly.

Avatar Roku: was merciful, lived while technology was expanded & in a peaceful era; had time to fully master the elements
Avatar Aang: forced to end the war & did through peaceful means, playful & calm, lost his entire ethnic group; never wanted to be the avatar
Avatar Korra: proud to be the avatar, aggressive, went against tradition, & lived in a world that seemingly didn’t need her
Kuruk absolutely did not neglect his avatar duties.

Facts
Each new Avatar is stronger than their predecessors. Aang would be the strongest because Korra severed her connection to the past lives.

😂😂😂😂😂😂 losing a tailed beast
we dont know others could survive or not... it is the plot...
also korra's spirit bending more like she only can use because of the situation! :S

Funny how Yangchen is the most brutal avatar out if them all because bro was legit Pulling air out ppl, violating ears, and basically giving Kuruk an easy time by making everyone fear airbenders and avatars.

Kyoshi literally had to learn how to hold back. Started earth bending couldn't do small things or use finesse. Forst time water bending she drove a ginormous uce spike through an island!

Avatar Aang found the right way aside from the pressure that was put on him, not killing anyone still managed to neutralize the threat where every other avatar only advised him to kill fire lord. To me, he truly understood and nailed the purpose of avatar. He mastered elements quickly and learnt energy bending. I personally believe he is the most powerful till now. To me he is no.1 and kiyoshi is 2nd

"She found the way to immortality"
Me: wait what?!!!!
@@thewizardmelech2718 same though here
When writeing the back story for these characters, writers f'd up and accidentally made the timeline like 300 years between the water bender and Roku, so the explanation i guess is that she mastered immortality.
The secret: being a badass bitch
Yeah but we’re not trying to know who is a prodigy here, ok she trained 200 years that’s what make her the strongest
Kyoshi: death can have me when it earns me
Not even that. She really just went, death can have when I feel like it.

As a result; he got the air nationed genocided.(why did he fight the volcano?!?)
Aang when he was born had all this legacy to live up to and ran from it being 12.
This is such an underrated comment- you broke down everything so clearly. I didn’t even know most of this!
deserve to be pinned!
Technically, the avatar is cleaning it's own neglect.
Weird, I remember watching a film theory that said exactly that🤔
Legend has it when Death approached Kyoshi, Kyoshi told Death when it's her time.
That’s badass-
That's bs 😒
taking away bending is still crazy but kyoshi was still the most badass to me
@@tink6225 Idk about that. Everyone can kill mercilessly. Taking someone else's bending away is the first, and so much more badass honestly.
@@sly607 kyoshi wasnt just a merciless killer... you have to read the book to get it idk
Not really.. taking one’s life is taking away the opportunity to change one’s way of life.
Avatar Kuruk never gets enough credit as an avatar, his predecessor avatar Yangchen states that because of her not fulfilling her duties with the spirit real during his life time kuruk had to pick up where she left and try to bring balance between spirits and humans.
A consequence of this is him losing his wife to the face stealer koh
On top of it all his legacy was forever tarnished & his death brought about too soon at the age of 34. One of the youngest avatars to ever die.
He deserves more recognition.
Kyoshi was just built different
But we cannot undermine Aang he was a beast on it's right like my man learned every single element faster than I can lose weight

Kuruk always gets a bad rap but he spent his entire time fixing what Yangchen fucked up
Which was? He himself said he lived in a time of peace where everyone sorted their own problems out
@@Pig_Man06i take it you haven't read the books, so spoiler warning:
Yangchen continuosly prioritised humans over spirits, resulting in spirits become vengeful and angry. Kuruk found this out and had to go around hunting a bunch of these vengeful spirits, but each spirit he killed ended up killing a bit of his own spirit as well (hence why he died young). Even with all of this, he chose not to tell anyone because he saw how much people looked up to yangchen and wanted to maintain her legacy
Thanks for saying this, haven't seen alot of people explaining the context behind Kuruk's supposed laziness when in fact he was putting in work behind the scenes. Fighting spirits and then not mentioning anything to make sure people weren't afraid and wouldn't try to fight and piss off more spirits like what happened in Wan's time. Wasn't his girlfriend's face getting stolen by Koh Yang Chen's fault in the first place? And he gets a bad rep for it but bro is just a victim of his predecessor's mistakes😮💨@@nabagaca
@@nabagaca I think the reason Kuruk kept it to himself is he did not want anyone sharing the same fate as him since his friends would have obviously insisted on helping him battle the dark spirits
Yup! Saying Kurkuk left the world in chaos for his predecessor is crazy as he was the one restoring the balance because Yangchen his predecessor was the one who really dropped the ball. She took the spirit world 100% for granted and in devastation with broken lies/promises that benefited humans. The avatar is meant to be the bridge for both. Yangchen might be the most powerful too but failed her duty so much Kuruk died earlier than every known avatar having to fight spirits.
