The eruption of Mount Etna volcano closed Catania's international airport. Most departures were canceled and some arrivals were diverted to other airports in Sicily. Travel to and from the Italian island of Sicily is currently disrupted due to a volcanic eruption.
Catania international airport was closed due to the eruption of Mount Etna which caused a cloud of ash to reach 8 km into the air. Airport management said: These delays will result in cancellations or diversions of routes to other airports, and said normal operations will resume once the ash impact is over.Airline Aeroitalia reports that the airport will be closed until 18.00 tonight.
No flights landed or departed in Catania, on the island's east coast. Some flights were diverted to Palermo and Comiso airports while others were cancelled. Local residents reported hearing loud rumbling sounds from Mount Etna and their windows shaking. Airport authorities advise passengers flying out of Catania to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.
