I've always compared vtubers to "anime Muppets".
In the case of lore, the fact that Kermit is a frog is not relevant 95% of the time. Kermit is just Kermit. But the lore lurking in the wings lets the performer to pull it out for impact when it becomes relevant, such as Kermit singing It's Not Easy Being Green".

Funnily enough, I've also compared Vtubers to Muppets. Though I was likening them to Muppets more so for the fact that they (or at least the Live2D Vtubers) are limited in their range of movements and expressions which, like Muppets, adds a lot to their charm.

It can be fun to see them play with lore, like when Ina made that joke based on the fact that there's a hostile mob in Minecraft that happens to share a name with part of Kronii's title. Or even alluding to PL lore, like with Michi and Kuro roasting each other.
Also, reconciling lore with reality can be fun to watch them try to do. Or just give up because there's no way you're thousands of years old if you watched Spongebob as a kid.

I love the way Akai Haato handled her lore.
Her initial was simply just "she's a tsundere kouhai", and that's it. But then she got stuck in Australia during Covid and kept getting demonetized by UA-cam, so she started acting more crazy and unhinged and also started calling herself "Haachama". It didn't take long before her fans started joking that "Haachama" was some kind of demonic possession or split personality or something.
Cue spring of 2021, where she spent... I think it was several _months,_ if I remember correctly, turning the "Haachama is a split personality" joke into an actual part of her character's canonical lore.

For a bit of context at 12:36, John Carmack was the Co founder of ID Software and co creator of Wolfenstein and DOOM. Fun fact, During the development of Doom, the game's creative director actually wrote down a massive document of lore called "the Doom Bible" with different character backstories and details for the game. However, John didn't approve it so it was mostly ignored aside from a few minor details. If you wondered why people called the dude from Doom "Doom Guy", this is why.

I think people underestimate how valuable vtuber lore is.
Firstly it helps you tell the vtuber apart from others a lot easier.
Then you have all the lore driven jokes and memes.
It can be a direction from content ideas and you can take that as far or as little as you like without any issue. (Like you could always stream in a bar as a bartender or just play games that have to do with rats when they come up if you're a rat.)
Then there's just the way it's a convenient latching on point for audience/in the moment based lore and in-jokes.
And finally it just allows you to build off it for more things. New outfits, activities, or even actual video games that would be impossible with out it (like CouncilRyS RPG or HoloCure for example).
If you were just "*shrug* a pink person I guess" you'd have none of these tools and possibilities.

  • @ThatGuyYouSeeCommentingOnClips
    @ThatGuyYouSeeCommentingOnClips 3 місяці тому +84

You can't start streaming with in-jokes and audience back-and-forth, especially if you aren't in a group, those things have to be built over time. Lore is often a stand-in that gives the streamer a starting point with how to interact with their audience, a draw to intrigue people, and to start building those jokes and ideas off of. "Natural lore" is better than constructed lore, but you can't start with it, so I think there is a good reason why it tends to be used initially.

V-Tubers are just digital pro-wrestlers and their lore is their gimmick. Ultimately, the talent underneath is going to make or break their career and fandom. But the gimmick is going to help them get noticed in the first place. It's also just fun and helps them stand out against the heavy competition they face. Without it, they may as well just be digital animated boy/girl # 0451.

I think, when you're starting to stream as a VTuber, lore can be your rescue boat while diving to find good content in the sea of ideas. At first you rely more on the lore aspects when you're uncertain or nervous until you find your groove step by step, returning to the rescue boat fewer and fewer times.
Lore can also help illustrating things you can't or don't want to talk about, like Calli's scythe swinging lessons for example.
It all depends on how much one wants to include lore in their content, of course. Really interesting stuff.

Kiara being suddenly a chicken and Subaru being a duck is not their lore at first but thanks to their pre-existing lore together with what the community comes up with creates for some fun oppertunities for both the streamer AND community.

About the Nerissa leaning into her lore is probably about how she explain a lot of things that happens to her based on her lore.
Like, how she is treating a problem with her throat and attribute the problem to the fact that she is missing part of her horn, something that, in lore, weaken her singing powers.
Other lore perk that is funny is the fact that Doki is a tomato wearing a skin suit, thats why she can change her appearance so drastically without problem.
Or some fun punchs like Matara been a ex-Hollywood worker

I think lore and character acting can be great for new Vtubers too. Having a character to play and keep in mind can help a lot for avoiding offhandedly saying something they shouldn't, like their real name or identifying information. It's also a pre established bundle of talking points to be creative with in the early days before you've really established that connection with your fans.

While I like lore as a creative tool for the streamer and the audience.
One aspect that often seems to be overlooked, is the way lore is often used to defect personal questions. Having lore as a buffer can be a nice way to redirect when things get to personal, or when an NDA is involved. This can be especially important for corporate V-Tubers.
But, most of the time it's just a bit of silly fun.

I am not an artist but I am a writer. It's how I can contribute to the community. People love to read stories about the characters they watch but also enjoy the talent's personality. I feel like lore scratches my itch of making original characters but not being able to set up a story. VTuber lore, especially during debut, is sometimes made for the fans to speculate and create stuff without having the VTuber themself having to bring out the lore everytime. My favorite example is how holoAdvent did it. The concept was there: jailbreak, rebellion, etc... but now people can ask questions like: why are they there? What type of powers do they have? Are they related to anyone else?
And that brings out my biggest joy: theorising and creating fun narratives for people.
While I do agree that lore isn't something to be strict about, it can give a part of the community you create something interesting, and if they aren't into lore, they can make it up by being awesome funny streamer!
    It's just fun.

  • @Chessrook44

I've always seen the whole Vtuber situation as being a spin off of the way numerous chatrooms worked in the IRC days and the like.
You had your general chat, where people had vague characters they interacted as, but it was mainly surface level. Backstories and lore could be referred to, but it was never really the constant there thing except for the rare person.
Then you had the casual RP section, one in which people would RP more like their characters, with lore playing more of a part. Amusingly, these sections were often Interdimensional Bars, since that was the easiest way to get characters from vastly different worlds together (Gee, sound familiar Takahata?)
And finally you had a more private, or more serious structured RP. Much rarer and more situational, but these would go full in on lore and backstory.
Right then and there, you have the three stages. Streamers who have lore but don't reference it much, streamers who do lore in crossovers in a more casual sense, and streamers who have periods of leaning HARD into their lore.

Lore being truly part of VTuber character works well when the lore explains why the persona focuses on what they do. Look at Astraline: a dog boy mangaka with delusions of world domination (Merryweather) in charge of a Finnish wolf (Lumi), a Viking elf/valkyrie who loves her history (Alfhilde), a buff demon catman who tells the arcane dark lore (Nick Nocturne), and the owlish twink who maintains the library of weird shit while going down rabbit holes and drinking tea (Fredrik Knudsen). You definitely don’t need lore. And especially at the beginning, if you do have lore, it’s best to keep your lore simple and straight forward. Using it as just a springboard for content here and there. Also if you do it well, it becomes something that not only defines the vtuber, but the community as well. As a proud member of KFP I might be a little biased, but I feel like the membership badges for KFP are the best. This is large part due to how they very easily depict the life cycle of a KFP. Starting from an egg and growing into an adult chicken, being turned into fried chicken for the business, then being reborn again into a phoenix-chicken hybrid. So what I’m trying to get to is that lore is the best when it is not just about the vtuber, but about the community as well. Especially when it’s something that just naturally builds on itself as time goes on.

I don't think that much premade lore is needed if any at all, but if someone is going to have this lore it should fit their personality and content. You mentioned that you've been told Nerissa has implemented her lore into her content well that's because it fits her and is pretty simple. She is a sexy demon whose powers work through singing who had one of her horns broken weakening her so all she has to do to fit her lore is be sexy and sing with her also deciding to have a side story in her content that comes up being her trying to find the broken off piece of her horn so that she can return to her full power. I personally think some day that will culminate with her getting a model where she has both of her horns and is at full power again.

I like lore. It's a crutch that the streamers can use to pitch themselves and to fill in blanks in the debut period where they're probably insanely busy and stressed and finding their feet regardless - some well-fitting lore can bridge the gaps there and work as a supply of ready-made jokes and memes to tap. As they settle into their niches and the content they like, it accordingly becomes less important. That said, I do like it when they lean into it occasionally, so long as it continues to fit the actual streamer. That's probably why Fauna tends to go more for 'forest witch' than 'avatar of Nature' even when she leans into it.
It also opens up alternative avenues of engagement - fanfiction about actual streamers can be a bit creepy, but fanfiction about the characters that they're supposed to represent is at least a step away from that and lets you explore those characters in a way that the streamers probably won't.

    • @gokbay3057
      @gokbay3057 3 місяці тому

Yeah the lore really helps make it easier for people to enjoy writing and reading fanfiction of them since you can disassociate them being real people and can think of them more like anime character.
This is really one of the important unique strengths of vtubing imo. The lore/charachter side helps the creation of great fanworks (Myth's Bad End or Holovure everyone?) and there being real people behind them help increase fan engagement further compared to just fictional characters (and a streamer may well have more content you can enjoy compared to an anime/game/manga/etc if the streamer has been around for a while, is reasonably active and the fictional media in question is not insanely long running like One Piece).

Ill say this. Lore is goid as helps provide a direction for creativity and innovation in fan works and future IP. Many of the games mafe by fans combine the lore and personality of talents to create innovative and interesting games. It leys artists have a backdrop to put the VTubers (example a fan art of just chasing advent or advent and justice interaction when advent was in prison) lore give a foundation to build on and a direction for merch. But if itsnot cohesive if can fall flat.
Tldr Lore properly presented is very beneficial

I mean it is also part of their lore that they don't really want to catch Advent, Liz just want to watch them while doing vtuber stuff. I only watch Cici so I can't speak about the other but her lore about being ancient is pretty prevalent in her stream as well as she can't drive at least and more importantly her hand cam stream where she made her hand look like a doll.
She also make small detail like calling her short break (winding up). For Justice!

Justice lore is great because it makes it even funnier that these supposed bringers of justice (mainly Cici and Gigi) end up doing far more crime than the fugitives they're supposed to catch.
When you think about it, it makes sense for Cecilia to become such a menace immediately, after she grew tired of doing the chores she was made for. Gigi being dumb and forgetting that Justice is just supposed to monitor rather than catch Advent is also perfectly in-line with her established lore

I think Shiori's one of those vtubers that really utilize her lore the best. Especially if you tune in to her Community tab, Shiori has always been an advocate for creativity and fan involvement. For Advent's entire year being here, Shiori has not slowed down with her fanfic prompts that she posts on her community tab (most of which are connected to her lore, loosely or heavily). There's also her Membership program stuff where she integrated a sorta "Choose Your Own Adventure" thing with members that basically involves her writing a story and making the member vote between 3 choices what happens next to that story. Not to mention, she also has this incredible thing with Tier 3 memberships where they get monthly audio dramas. AND there was also her very own Visual Novel that actually had lore tied to those audio dramas, which eventually was revealed to be tied to the lore for her 3D debut
    Shiori is incredibly creative XD

There's only a couple VTubers I like enough to watch regularly. I enjoy their personality, way of expressing themselves and the type of content they go for. Then there's a handful I watch occasionally, and some I only ever watch through clips. And even those I don't mesh with at all and actively avoid.
But once lore gets involved, I'm suddenly interested in ALL of them. Worldbuilding is my jam, and that includes theorycrafting around everything we know about backgrounds, abilities, magic systems, divine pantheons, spacefuture tech and whatever else is involved. I love it.

I don't think lore is super necessary, but as a Holostars EN fan, to me it's super interesting and engaging when there is something to think about in the back. They have stats, roles and different weapons. Like the way they decided to go with the EN boys, they can easily make an anime or a manga based on their adventures (which they technically already have done manga related stuff)
When "gen 2" debuted, it wasn't an entirely new thing. They expanded the first group of boys, and said that TEMPUS was originally 6 people but they gave an explanation for why 2 of them weren't with the original 4, and that they "recruited" 2 more members, making TEMPUS an 8 member group. "Gen 3" they did technically make a separate group from TEMPUS, it's still within the same world as them, just different location, which gives reason why we never saw them until now. Even just having the boys be apart of a group within the lore, also gives reason why they're together during animations and stuff. They're not gods, or high beings. They're just dudes who work together in a guild
While not everybody follows the lore to a T (ex: Axel having the highest strength stat but suffering during Ring Fit, Goldbullet being the sniper yet as far as I know he hasn't really done anything sniping related, etc.), having something added to them makes it more interesting to learn more about, and when they actually do follow the lore, whether intentional or not, it's also very cool. Bettel being both the luckiest and unluckiest person, Vesper enjoys reading, Axel doesn't like reading, everybody til this day still considers and calls Altare "Leader", etc. But I also like it when inside jokes or things that randomly occurred overtime gets integrated to the lore. Like Vesper having a spear and being a clone, Altare being a Demon King, Jerry being a reoccurring character, Axel and the Axelotls' relationship, etc.

I think, regardless of whether they have horns or wings or their hair is literally water the vast majority of vtubers are streamers first and characters second. Clearly this investigation shows most viewers are on the same page, they tune in to watch someone streaming instead of some anime dragon princess character. You made a really good point that with livestreaming the "live" element means chat is very involved in whatever developments might take place in character or irl. Trying too hard to cling to the lore revealed at debut will eventually deny that evolution and connection.
That said, any vtubers that are dedicated to acting out a character in every stream, I am so there for it. Sometimes in a world that takes itself too seriously we need people who take fiction too seriously to balance things out.

I'm a fan of vtubers having lore - It's not *needed*. But I'm a big Calli fan and it's far from unheard of from her to talk about being a reaper, for example.
I think it gives new vtubers a fantastic *starting point* for interacting with their fans and making some initial jokes they CAN drop it after they build a bit of rapport with their viewers. But they can also... Keep it up, and have a lot of fun with it - It's a great tool that can be used to continually make in jokes, fun videos, things like that...
Speaking of Calli again, I love her deep introspective songs. There's a lot of serious thought going into those... But there's usually a reference to scythe swinging or something in there too, which is far more a lore/character thing. It's fun. On the other side of things, though it's less common in her recent music... One of her most popular songs is RIP, which is entirely in character - And I'm a big fan of, say, "The Grim Reaper is a Live-Streamer", which is pretty heavy on it too.
As you've said about 'created' lore, that's also very fun and I love fan-content or on-stream occurences being wrapped into it - I think Lore is at it's best when it's somewhat fluid, in fact, so that the streamer doesn't feel constrained about it, like they HAVE to act like a reaper or whatever it is at all times.
As an aside, "thirdly" probably = Tertiary? A tertiary concern?

Lore serves two really important purposes for Vtubers. One it gives them a hook to draw in their audience and get them invested quickly. Worked for me with HoloCouncil. Two, it gives them something to use when they're first starting to interact with each other. Best seen with Advent and Justice. The criminal escapees and the law enforcers who are supposed to catch them. Instant connection to lean on until they develop their brand more.

I think, for me, the initial lore goes a long way into the vtuber's character design itself. It helps in understanding why one's model looks like that.
Though I would also argue it could be looked at in both ways, either lore was created *for* the design, or a design came up *after/while* the lore was being built up.
Also the lore definitely wears off after a few streams (more often than not subconsciously), and it all comes down to how the vtuber and the community spins it going forward.

I liked that Lore video that Calli did and it showed a young Ame working on her time machine. I thought that video was awesome and well done. I like the lore vids because it tells you a backstory of that V-Tuber or V-Tubers. John Carmack is one of the found fathers of FPSes he made Wolfenstein 3D and Doom along with John Romero. I do agree that the Steams themselves create new lore look at Calli for example she did a 24hr stream with one of her VODs being taken down due to copyright issues and the 2nd video of that is where she is drawing and she had Ollie and another ID member and her name escapes me and Ollie asks Calli if she wants clothes and Calli says and i am going to paraprhase "I would like for you to give me clothes Ollie." And then you have Kalea playing that game where you have to eat Sushi or you will die and she ends up making her self laugh so hard that she had to get her oxygen.
Not to mention the Lore between Moona and Pekora.

  • @HisuiCotton
    @HisuiCotton 3 місяці тому

The reason lore works really well for Hololive too is because it builds IP and marketing fairly easily, but also because they build it off the member's personalities or personal stories in a away that any fantasy novel would try to relate to it's reader's experiences in life. Nerrisa has recently mentioned how lore being that her demonic voice powers were dampened by her horn being broken was spun that way because of how she had ruptured / damaged her vocal chords irl. Mumei has also mentioned that the MV / song for 'Mumei' used her lore but also contained a lot of her feelings on being lonely growing up. So i think there is a way where lore can come from a real place and be a sort of subtext for real feelings / experiences for people but it's definitely difficult to try and use it something that isn't in a one-off nature. It's much better for big projects or the memes personally.
PS. my favorite lore drop was Ina's April Fools where she was waiting for a package for April Fools and as it arrived on stream AO, her book, teleported everyone and introduced them to an envoy of the Ancient Ones called the Watcher. That location ended up being her VRChat galley world later. As Ina came back we were mind wiped and Ina shared her package which was a screaming rubber chicken.

To me VTuber lore is a very nice, useful framework for both the VTuber and any new fans coming into their content. And if I want a deeper dive into something lore-like... fanfiction exists to fill that exact need for people. I am currently waiting on the next chapter of a HoloMyth fanfic that explores the authors idea of how the group could form while staying lore-compliant. It build on the existing relationships between the VTubers and on the lore they were initially presented with and it's actually quite good.
Outside of that lore is flavor and seasoning. It can enhance things as long as it's applied with care and restraint.

Lore for me is a great foundation for improv. You can talk about yourself without doxxing or just saying "None of your business". Want to redisign something or introduce new assets, just connect it to the lore and you can easily make a fun event around it. It doesn't even have to make too much sense. For example Buffpup got a suit and somehow is the boss, after corpa being a long running meme. Now with every hype train random emoji stonks rise or fall.
That was very specific, but if you have a good theme/branding around you (lore helpign with that), that can give you some great opportunities. At the same time it's definitely not necessary and for every vtuber with deep lore, there is also one that is just as entertaining without.

  • @7QWERTY13

If a vtuber model is a mask for the person, vtuber lore is a mask for that person's life. Just like how a vtuber model let's a person appear on camera without actually being on camera, vtuber lore lets them share their life and their day without giving away personal details that will identify them. For example, early Calliope Mori would make frequent reference to "scythe swinging lessons" that would prevent her from streaming on certain days or during certain times. Now, does anyone sincerely believe that she was actually training to be a reaper apprentice? Obviously not. "Scythe swinging lessons" was just a stand in for the day job she wasn't able to quit yet for Hololive. This sort of thing is especially useful for vtubers who want to maintain a certain level of transparency or authenticity with their viewers, but are compelled by contract to be cagey on personal details.

For me, I think Vtuber lores helps to use some stereotypes so we could get close to the vtuber as fast as possible. Without the lore, everyone would basically be a fancy stickman.
In this line of work, they wouldn't want to share their personal information and what makes a relationship fizzle out? when there is nothing new to learn from a person. With some lore, we could quickly deduce and quickly allow some understanding between the vtuber and their chat. Like "Whats your height?" "Whats did you do before?" "Where do you live?" Jokes and understandings could be made about it. Some information could be shared without divulging their info.
For example, i think talents that goes in their lore, Advent from Hololive, they build on it, there is hidden stories and fun fact that pops out once in a while, like for example "what happened to Nerissa's broken horn? Where is it?". Fuwamoco being demon dogs, they play into their lore really well too "I turned off the console! I listened!" is funny and matches with their lore really well. Shiori as an archiver, her streams often heads into stuff that she documented, Bijou is a rock, hardcore gamer, a gem that is easily influenced by emotions, there is so much epic collab streams with her.
Lore is important and I love it when vtubers work with their lore, thats the magic of it.

Depends - lore helps with fan creations if you have zero interest on making games or stories/content about the streamer then it doesn't matter
But if you are trying to make a game or a story/content then it is very important, like what characteristics do they have as a fighter? How would they fight!? What magic can they use? What can they do with their abilities? How do they interact with other streamers in their agency within a story?
Sometimes their streamer moments are good enough for short stories but anything deeper they need lore
