Where can we get a jerrycan guitar like that??
Thats really badass! Thanx for sharing your video! 😀
i wanna buy one too
that thing is so freaking rad! Ive known and done research about some of the GI from ww2 era but ive never seen a jerry can used like this! Great craftsmanship and a really nice sound! wish i had learned guitar to make something like this
The Jerry can is a gas can developed by the axis side of ww2, hence the name Jerrycan ..just some history
Hi everyone it’s a Billy the maker of the jerrycan just to let use know the neck is made of one-piece walnut wood with no cuts or joins the jerrycan is a 5 litre pressed steel can and then nick pick up is a single coil humbucker handmade locally in Perth with a mike pick up under the bridge and a three-way switch as Justin discovered is correct and a solid stainless steel 3mm thick hinge for its spine to stop movement in the back door The neck mount is welded in because when I bolted it in it vibrated and rattled a lot I make all the hardware bits myself except for the electronic components and it takes me 6 to 8 months to make one because my job interferes with my hobby and so does life sorry taking so long to put this up just got back from work And I would like to thanks everybody for your responses most uplifting and inspiring comments from your appreciation Billy
Awesome job, Billy
Billy, you're a bloody great story teller mate! You'd be a great guy to have a beer with down at the pup. Great guitar, keep up the hobby. You've got a good little side hustle waiting to happen there.
Love your work Billy, that's dope.
Billy Thomas - EPIC Billy! Love seeing this.
Pure art, congratulations my friend you done something amazing.
To be called a mate by a Australian is one of the highest compliments a person can receive.
👍🎸
Means friend.
@@AnnaLVajda I guess he knows what it means...
As an Aussie I can say it means a hell of a lot more than just “friend”
And you guy's have Taj Farrant.
Lucky bugger's.
I should have been a £10 Pom.
Nice one Billy
Billy from down under is a class act. Brilliant story teller!
That's one good bloke, what knows how to show his appreciation for all the help given by a stranger on the internet. Billy may not play, but he surely Rocks!
Thanks very much I hope everybody enjoys it as much as Justin does and as much as I didn’t make it
Totally agree brother,so nice to see these things
@@billythomas1708 You make some fine guitars Billy, I love that guitar, it is awesome.
I subscribed to your channel Billy, looking forward to some great videos from you Sir.
Kam Tube You can get hold of me on Instagram Billy_guitar I have three left to make and it takes me 6 to 7 months to make them because my job interferes with my hobby🤣
Just goes to show you Justin, you never know how your talents will affect the lives of people you've never even met. Keep doing what you're doing. GOD BLESS YOU!!!
Ashtray pick holder is brilliant. Seriously.
Or Condoms!
ArgentPure no.
@@kamedl3691 the beer opener is cool but a condom dispenser is out of the question!
Ikr My mind was blown!!! I need one 😂
Yeah it does look like the old ashtrays in cars.
What a great guitar but even a better story! There's still great and humble people in this world! Way to go Billy very cool!
The unboxing and playing part is one of your most badass videos on its own, but Billy's video took it to a whole another level! What a great story and such a humble, great guy. We as a community thank you all the entertainment and value you give us Justin!
What a great story. Two guys half way across the world meet up like a friendship made in heaven. That guitar sounds real deep. Thanks for making my day.
I'm an Aussie too - what a great guitar. The Jerry Can was a steel German designed WWII fuel can. They were so solid that us Aussies adopted them because of their ruggedness in the bush. We used to refer to the Germans as "Jerry's" during WWII & that's how it got the name jerry can. That is a one in a billion guitar - it couldn't have gone to a more deserving home. Congratulations Justin & well done Billy!!
What's ironic is that the Brits actually invented them first. Nobody is really sure how they came up with the name Jerry Can, since they were originally British.
I can't play this guitar but JUSTINCAN😉👏👏
Wokka-wokka!
That's the one !👍
Jerrycan too.
Justin can play the shit out of those guitars.
🤣😁🤣
Both the guitar, and the thank you, are both excellent.

Huge thanks to both Billy & Justin for this incredibly uplifting story! 💓 Peace! . . . .
...faith in humanity: restored.
The power of the love of music knows no boundaries. Thanks Billy, can’t imagine what you’re feeling watching Justin play #1... inspiring story,
WOW!!! That was Great! I had a good friend named Blane Hixon he was about six feet four and 400lbs we became good friends back in 1977 in High School and got a band together and he was the bass player, we remained friends till his death in April 2017 and his hobby was making his Cigar Box Guitars and he seemed so happy when he was making those guitars. I was going to get one from him but then he died but I can always see that smile he had when he was working on his Box Guitars. Thank-You so much for the video E 🙂
I play bass, but I so enjoy these weird guitars, and appreciate how they're made and sound.
It's so lovely of this here Billy how he talked about Justin and to give him that one.
You're both lovely. Blessings
Justin and Billy just made my weekend!! Cheers fellas. 12 yr, single malt on this end.
Just being the nice guy that you are, Justin, for putting out the tutorials and how to play has probably made you more friends than you know. And from us, just the fans of your music during the years has made you many, many more friends ! Like over a half a million that's a lot of people that admire your skill, your ability to touch so many lives must be mind blowing sometime. Your freedom with your knowledge and your music videos truly is appreciated, Justin, THANK YOU !
Man I'm blown away by that tone, sounds fantastic!! Very surprised
The thing sounds great. A lot different than I figured it would. Also I love that the inlays on the fret board look like they are the ends off of fired bullet casings. You can see the hammer strikes in the primers. That is so farggin cool.
That Billy is one solid bloke.
Every second of this video was so cool, from the unboxing to the blues riffs, to the self-interview with the builder. I would share all of his praise of you as well, Justin. You're one cool dude. Love your videos.
Never saw your channel before. Like your playing. Always liked blues music. Taught myself harmonica a couple decades ago. Used to play at bars and with a buddy named Joey Sexton. I was supposed to play on one of his albums but I had just lost my Dad and didn't have the drive to go to the studio. Cancer got Joey 2 years ago and I haven played much. So many skills felt like they were dying off. So I got into Ham Radio. Just one of those things I always wanted to do. I needed a desk, for my gear. So I watched many youtube videos and got my woodworking skills back. Made all the furniture in my house (including that desk). This guy in Australia is right, and he's an inspiration , an example of what you can do with the total knowledge of the human race at your fingertips and the willingness to learn something. It doesn't matter what drives you, or why... Learn something, create something, share it with someone. Glad I found your channel and a reminder why we create.
Billy seems like such a sweet guy! He speaks for all of us when he says how much you’ve helped with educating and entertaining us for the past seven years. Keep on rocking man! 🤘
You are right on he has helped all of us and making me feel so humble today thanks for your comment billy
@@billythomas1708 Hey Billy, good onya mate. Justin's done a lot for me too, just by watching him play his guitars and seeing him interviewed. (I live in Perth, not far from you. Best, Ron)
jacquelineandron you ever up in the hills my way more than welcome to pop into the shed for a drink and a laugh thanks for your kind comments Billy
Ha ha! Love ya, Billy!
My beloved bloke (in SE Qld, Oz), was halfway through building his dream Peace Band using instruments made from weapons, at the time he died from cancer a few years back.
"All Australian Blokes Need a Shed" - absolutely!!! Happy Travellin, Guyse! RjB
I don't play guitar, but I sure can acknowledge good craftsmanship and playing.
What a great gesture. That is not only a guitar, that is a piece of (He)art.
Yet another great video Justin! You just gotta love Billy...he is an Australian treasure!
This is an absolutely incredible tribute from Billy from Australia!
What a moving video, and great story!
Thank you Justin and Billy for this great video!
Guitar fan from Israel
Bravo 2X. One for Mr. Billy and one for Mr. Justin. Double awesome.
Greetings from Perth Western Australia! Great to see a local getting his work seen! Cheers mate..
its like a happy medium between a tele and a resonator, love it
Jerry cans were 5 gallon steel. One style for gas or diesel. The other style made for water only. Tough cans but bullets would go through them! I carried many of these, 2 in each hand, back when I was young and strong. Can't pickup 1 anymore. But I still play guitar thumbpickin style.
Named 'jerry can' because the Germans invented them, and the Allies decided they were a good way of transporting fuel, and copied them
Pashak de Scilly I’m Aussie, I never new why we called them jerry cans....cheers mate.
Bill, you are a treasure for Australia. And Justin Johnson is a treasure for the USA. Both of you are a treasure for the world.
Amazing!...…..Love the Aussie guy....how wonderful to make you such a unique instrument.....and the goodness of heart, the love, the appreciation …….in this time of challenge for the whole word, this is a story of the human heart...……...and to see you open the box and play, so wonderfully, as you always do...…………..love you Justine!
Wow, that thing is beautiful! What a work of art!! 🙌🏼 And with a built-in bottle opener, pick holder compartment, body that opens... Can't wait to hear how it sounds!! 🎶
Cheers to Billy for building such a cool guitar. Cheers to Justin for being such a cool dude, bringing us such fantastic videos. You're an amazing inspiration to us all. JJ. Thanks for being you
That has got to be the coolest guitar ever... the ashtray/pickholder is pure genius.
this has to be one of the most badass guitars i have ever seen
God bless you Billy !!!
You are a true kindred soul and kind of like me. For some reason, I love guitars but hardly can play at all.
Just as you, since a young age, was always into the hot rods and especially Harley Davidsons, which I rode for over 40 years.
But, as I have gotten older, cannot ride comfortably any more due to a terrible accident in 2013. So, I love fiddling around in the garage, just as you on different projects.
If you were my neighbor, we would definitely be "mates" and working on some interesting projects.
I would absolutely love to find a way to acquire one of those awesome guitars, but probably a total impossibility.
Anyway, keep up the great work and especially keep the gears turning in that creative mind of yours.
You have been blessed with a special gift from above !!
Hello from Canada! I want one soooo badly! He definitely should make more of them! I'm partially disabled, so I play flat like Jeff Healey and I would LOVE to try one of these! B E A utiful! Amazing sound! I don't need another guitar but would pick up one of these in a heartbeat for my cabin!
Oh man!!! Unreal!! Hinged jerry can. So many details. Make more that is ripping cool!
Glad you added the video footage from Billy, truly made this video even better !
Thats such a cool instrument, whats even better is the story behind it. I couldn't agree more with how much knowledge and enjoyment we get from your content. Good on ya Billy for doing this.
Good on ya Billy - for making the jerry can guitar and going public with the crap you took / your determination - and your thanks - thats role modelling more than guitar building skills....
As an Aussie from the east coast, go Justin Johnson!!!
Hahaha!! 'm from Australia, and every 4-wheel drive has one of these on the rear bumper down here. That thing is hot!! Sounds like it's being played in an aircraft hangar.
The sad truth in nearly every 4-wheel drive in Australia is a show pony that never goes off road and certainly has no need for a jerry can, regardless of size.
That is a specialty can that is not known in the rest of the world. It was developed by the German army before WW2, so named a "jerry" can by the US forces who copied it. The modern "NATO" can is much the same.
@@ExternalInputs Australia is LARGE, even if some who carry the can don't go offroad, it's a nice insurance if they do long distance driving. Hell, maybe the paved road to the outback is still too far.
An aircraft hangar on the late shift is a great time to turn up the stereo!
@@ExternalInputs same in the states. Douchebags with jeeps they make pretty with over-priced bling and never use them for what they are designed for. Dumbasses.
WOW, That is awesome! The builder at the end is so grateful... great to see in this world. Paying it forward. Thanks.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how absolutely ridiculously incredible you can make ANY Guitar sound!
Every single video I'm dumbfounded and want to set fire to my gear.
Such a wonderful sound from this bad boy man :) stay safe Justic and Gang
Neil Donovan yes true Neil, but it does sound epic in its own right
Awesome concept and work on the guitar, Billy. I love crafting and casually playing guitar as a hobby. It inspires me to think of crafting ideas, myself.
Best thing I've seen on the internet in months!
Well done to both of you.
You’ve probably just sold the first batch of 49, no cynicism intended, just absolute admiration, of both yours and the makers talent.
Love the guitar ! I have seen those cans back in the day but not for years. My Dad had one he used for "boat gas". Awesome build. And you can make any build sound great Justin. I would also echo this fellows remarks when he states how helpful you've been with your videos .{ I still refer to the one you did in Tazmania , on intonation. } You also contributed greatly with a copy of your scales and chords for 3 and 4 string CBG's for a donation I made to a silent auction to raise money for a child's hospice here locally in British Columbia. Thanks so much for that. My/our contribution raised shy of $1000. Cdn dollars for the hospice. I believe the entire auction raised upwards of 1 million dollars.
What an amazing story. There are some damn good people out in Western Austrailia. I was lucky enough to know a young lady who grew up outside of Perth. I love the concept and the guitar but what I love the most was the good hearted nature. Cheers mate.
Video's like this, showing kudos given when & where appropriate, improve this humans faith in humanity. Cheers!
I would love to see another video of this guitar and tune you played Justin:)
It's something I can tap my foot to and have a whiskey or 2. Love that rhyme you played.
Justin has planetary influence.....its great ...
Yes! Yes! Yes! ... THANK You! I REALLY like watching what you do and play. GOD BLESS!!!
Billy's is a good story teller!😃great guitar too.
Incredible - Luv your work Billy, & Justin's playing never ceases to amaze me. Lovely tribute from a humble and talented man. Cheers
Justin + Billy's Jerry Can = Blues Gasoline
instead of blue grass. blue gass
Just and awesome guitar played by an awesome artist. What a treat on a lousy stuck at home in Florida, Covid day. Best I've felt for a long, long time. Thanks to both of you. (And I agree with Justin, Mr. -- Make more of them.) Thanks to you both.
While you make the weirdest things sound cool.... I love the ringy/ resonator twang and bang of this thing...like those early blues recordings. Muddy, played through the speakers of an old Ford... the best. Thanks for the groove Sir.
The Jerrycan guitar has some real sweet tone. Great blues playing.
What an awesome guitar! The builder seems like a nice guy and he's got incredible skills!👍😎🎸🎶
Came across Justin Johnson yesterday and was an immediate fan. Today there is now a manufacturing shop in Michigan full of new Justine Johnson fans. Great video and a great guitar player.
I hear My Babe in there.. Cool Git and Excellent Lubricated Playing Style!.. Thanks JJ!
I drove many miles in an old 40 series Landcruiser through the outback of Western Australia, a jerry can of diesel in the back with my swag, the spare tire and high-lift jack when I was a young fella working for Western Mining Corporation based in Kalgoorlie. That guitar brings back memories.
There’s enough room in the can for a bottle of Jack and a glass/slide. It’s awesome! Justin, you’re an inspiration! Come play South Florida!
That was super cool Justin. It nice to know when you are appreciated. Billy is a super nice guy and it appears a excellent craftsman. That is one fine guitar Billy made. He could definitely start a business if he wanted. It sounded great too ! Keep up the great videos and Billy keep doing what you are doing !
I agree with him Justin, your music is awesome.
You're almost as good as Larkin Poe!
I found you by accident and I can't play either but I wanna make shovel guitars with my pre-apprentice school kids.
I had a chat with them at the start of the year and told them I was sad to see the previous years kids only leave with a certificate and the hope of a job. Well I played the class one of your videos and they all loved it! I dangled the carrot and said if they work hard for me all year, we will have enough time at the end of their final term to make a shovel guitar each to take home as well.
Bugger me but they believed it and they're working hard so I better watch ALL your videos now so I can figure it out for them before we get there!
Too cool for school!
Frank
Justin the MAN!!!! That is one hell of a heart felt story. All of the down to earth souls of the world joined by the love of music.
Billy has one hell of a talent for making a amazing guitar. Great people make the world go round!! Thank you Justin.
That thing is *stunning*, and sonds awesome.
Welcome to Australia mate, we grew up playing on jerry cans and blowing into Jack Daniels bottle
I love when Billy called Justin Johnson his man crush. Relatable.
I thought it was just me with the bromance thing!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Many thanks BILLY!! Now thats appreciation!! More jerry playing soon i hope Justin.. please
you always seem to pop up in my news feed when I need a little mood booster. thanks justin. and beautiful knife
That’s kind of funny considering he primarily plays the blues.
Dr Creepypasta the blues makes me happy. Reminds me of growing up. Has nothing to do with what their singing about.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Billy, the man who makes these guitars, top bloke.
How amazing a Mississippi sounding blues guitar from my home country of Australia.Aussies can make anything from almost anything.I just love the sound and the talent playing it.Maybe Gibson should do a Jerry Can Guitar,as long as they don't make the Jerry Can haha
Good on ya Justin! Oh them Aussies are the greatest eh? Good stuff guys. Nice ripping on that Jerry-can too btw. Sick little west-oz gem right there!
🤘✌️🤙
I like the piezoelectric sound on it. Nice.
Beautiful work Billy!..good on ya mate and Justin made her sound so good!..✌💛🤘
Now its not a jerrycan, its a Justincan.
Amen, LOL
Qwufi no it's a Billy can( isn't that the name of the legend who made it?) Go Australia
The moment he lifted it up it became a Jerry curl
Justin, First time I ever saw your videos. To say the least, I am seriously impressed. Loved the little bluesy ditty you played but also, loved the story behind the Jerry Can guitar. All I can say is..... You dun good buttercup! Keep up the good work!
Playing guitar, taking a hit of the strong stuff then using the glass as a slide??? Justin, you are a god of the blues! Peace and good vibes from the UK!!
Not only that. But sat the glass down without missing a beat, amd THEN took it to another level
TannerLewis Good point!
Good on ya Billy & Justin, thats an awesome guitar played by a awesome player!!
Justin looks at the camera describing his knife.
Dundee: that's not a knife
Lol.
Crazy idea, but real craftsmanship!
He opened up his jerry can and the music came pouring out
Justin's Jerrycan Blues. Can't wait for the cd, hopefully with dedication to Billy!
Good old Aussie engineering! It’s what we store petrol and diesel in...
Billy is way cool. Thank you Billy 👍
i love Billy:
"what the fricken hell is intonations??!"
Google it 😜
If it makes you want to play, then its PERFECT!!
I have a 20 liter military can I have been wanting to make a resonator guitar out of for a while now, this just kick started that project back up LOL! Great job Billy and congrats on #1 Justin, that is really cool. Sounds awesome
Great if you need any pointers on welding or cutting or setting it up I will do your videos to help you out go forth and enjoy thanks Billy. You can messenger me on Billy_guitar on Instagram
That thing is so BADASS and unique! That is probably your biggest fan. I would love to get one!
I found this by chance, watched the whole lot, and I gotta say Billy your a classic dude, love your work, I live in Vic my bro lives in WA, your work is great but the story is greater, think its about time I made some guitars my self seeing what you have done has inspired my to go for it, yes intonation and action is the key to a great instrument also good timber or steel in your case, thanks for the story mate, rock on, and yes some days it better in the shed than in the house right ; }
Cheers dude........
As an Aussie that would maker proud 👍
This was an extraordinary video. I loved every second of this video. Your playing was fantastic on the Justincan. The gentleman’s video to you was so cool. Here is this man who decides to take up a hobby. Who makes guitars as a hobby??? Where do you begin? Lol!!!!! Awsome as always Justin. ❤️🥃
kholbrook203 the question is, who doesn’t make guitars for a hobby...
ALL I CAN SAY IS HELL YEAH !!! WHAT AN AWESOME GUITAR,,IT SURE WENT TO THE RIGHT PERSON ,,,HAVE A ROCKIN DAY ,THANKS FOR SHARING ,,🤘🖤🙏👍
