Simple fix! The Ashtron PS are almost bullet proof and they are easy to troubleshoot. The also have a very clean output. They do however put your muscles to work moving them around. Great Video! 73

Nice fix. I'd get the odd 240v light switch with the same issues, usually from high inductive loads like banks of fluorescent lights and/or lots of switch toggling, especially on higher loads.
Glad it was not a more costly fault. :)
SO, the best way to see if there is mains power coming in is to wet your fingers and see if something can be felt ( while touching any exposed wire). lol

An interesting mod is to add a meter to convert these into an RS-20M as it were. The case, however, is made of extremely rugged steel and, unless you you have a set of hellacious Greenlee punches, the mod might result In an unsightly massacre of an otherwise beautiful old DC supply.
However, if you get one of those LCD voltmeter/ammeter units off eBay that display watts/watthours, etc. You can mount it on the front by drilling two holes: one for the connection wires and one to mount the base plate of the LCD meter. This plate snaps off the meter assembly and can be bolted onto the PS case front. Then, when the connection wires are fed through and plugged in, merely snap the meter assembly onto the base plate and you're good to go.
It'll take a little snooping around to understand how to actually connect the meter into the PS but documentation is available the interwebs.
One additional mod is to drill two holes in the front and mount two female banana jacks - red and black - to access the 13VDC. Then you can use the PS to provide an auxiliary bench source. The make great gel cell chargers, by the way!
My 35M had an issue where it would randomly audibly " snap " and cut output to zero. Cycle the switch and would work for a day, a week, 15 minutes what ever. I shelved the unit as it was dumping my hf radio and I am sure its not good for it. Finally ordered a new regulator/crow bar board and soldered it in. Been fine for a couple years now, and the price was under 50 bucks shipped from Astron. Mine was less then a year old when it started acting up.

Just get lucky? Really? If a ham can't/won't fix suck a thing, they got a real problem! They must not have learned much from the test. Very sad!

I have owned this 13.8 volt 3 amp, 5 surge linear regulated power supply for 38 years, still in like new condition, and I have at various times had to replace transistors in the supply because they die and the output voltage jumps to 19 volts. It's easy to damage them so I suspect something else and will be eying the caps now that it is showing it's age.
The Astron stuff is pretty reliable. Most of the Astron supply parts are still available.
