It's ridiculous to consider AUKUS as an Asian NATO-like alliance. South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, and Australia should be the starting core of this alliance for a better thought experiment. Yes, the Philippines is seriously lagging in force projection and military assets compared to others in the list but its strategic location is a must for this collective agreement.

Military isn't cheap, especially for a developing country. Every peso we spend on the military would be a loss that could have been better spent on social services. However, this do leave us pretty weak and can easily be pushed over by the likes of China.
We are increasing our military spending, but other politicians say that the power difference between us and China's too great and we can never hope to win in a conflict even if we put 100% of our economy to the military. Some presidents like Duterte wants to be closer to China, while PBBM wants an alliance with the US and its partners
Also, the Philippines is mostly pro-US. It would be a tough sell for the people to align to China, considering Duterte's openness to China left a bad taste in our mouths.

China is the player creating tensions, not other nations in the indo-pacific. Creating island bases in the south of China sea after Xi stated they were not to be militarily bases, claiming almost all of the south of China sea as Chinese territory, including areas within the Philippines exclusive economic zone and disputed territory of other nations, its insistence on the option of military action against Taiwan if the Taiwanese people choose to not be subject to the CCP control and so much more. China must be resisted and not with half measures but with resolute insistence that it does not get to railroad its way to expansionism and hegemony over other nations.

Did you know Japan started off with a superior navy to USA in WW2? What happened was that the sheer industrial scale of the 1940s US pumping out new ships and planes, quickly overwhelmed the Japs.
USA has a lot of fancy tech in its military, but they're all really, really expensive, and the US economy has deindustrialised. China is an industrial colossus, the world's factory. If heavens forbid a war ever breaks out, I think the outcome won't be that simple.

The reality is that the US did not care about what was going on in Asia until Pearl Harbour was attacked. The West is fearful of losing its dominance with the rise of Asian nations. The idea of an Asian Century is not something they want, especially not one where Asian countries see eye to eye (and we got a glimpse of that during COVID-19 with distribution of vaccines and more recently with the undying neutrality most of Asia felt in regards to the Ukraine War).
This is why there is a desire to create camps in Asia that are pro-West rather than pro-Chinese. It's much harder though because the impact China has on other parts of Asia is much greater these days. The most recent example being the Maldives, China happens to be the dominant power in the region and so most countries see China in their line of vision than anybody else. China to eastern and southern Asia is what Russia is to Eastern Europe.

Asian countries prefer being neutral. A NATO-style Asian alliance will NEVER work when its countries prefer to respect China's sovereignty when dealing with its own issues. Remember when Hong Kong was burning? Japan, India South Korea and the whole of Southeast Asia kept silent or said that it's an "internal issue" while the West was very vocal in their support of Hong Kong and supported all condemnations at the UN.
Asian countries may despise each other but they don't judge each other. The West needs to understand the Asian mentality before engaging with it. This is something Singapore's leaders and diplomats have been saying for decades like Lee Kuan Yew and Kishore Mahbubani but it's 2024 and the West still hasn't learned and I don't think it will until another "RCEP moment" happens.

I think it is high time that the old SEATO resurface once more. ASEAN is more on economic cooperation. SEATO is more on interpolitical defense treaty among members of the ASEAN to counter threats over contested territorial waters. Honorary members such as the US, UK, and Australia and NZ can join if they so wish. If India wish to join as an honorary member, then the better. Having such a defensive treaty to address concerns posed by China and even piracy around member nations can greatly deter highly aggressive countries such as China.

Lol. First, China's military might DOES NOT rival that of the US. Not even close. And even if China could manage to steal enough information to produce armaments which could rival the US, they don't have the skilled fighting force to implement them. China ONLY has numbers, but they are orders of magnitude less capable man for man on land, in the air or on the seas. Second, an Asian NATO isn't a bad idea considering the posturing China, Russia and N Korea have all continued to press.
We should want, and in fact might even need to coordinate our efforts between the US, Taiwan, Japan, S Korea, India, Australia and The Philippines. We might even add Indonesia and New Zealand in there. Having a rock solid pack between these countries would fortify our strength in the Indo Pacific and Asia as a whole. It's more deterrent than offensive, but the strength is unquestioned. And the time is now. Peace through superior fire power is the ONLY way to keep peace in an ever-growing area of unrest. With a NATO like union of these countries, China, NK and Russia would not even think about starting some actual conflict. They would be thoroughly destroyed.

As I've said the past year or so, it should start with Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. The seeds were already planted for a possible JKP alliance; not only militarily, but economically as well. This JKP alliance should be a body for it to have teeth and be respected. Maybe in the not-so-distant future, it can become a Confederacy.
We just have to water, nurture, and protect the seeds.
    1. It is an Asia-Pacific membership only.
    2. It will stay neutral in the China vs West issue. (Neutrality doesn't mean not doing anything. It can also mean leveraging both sides to keep them in check.)
    3. Australia, New Zealand, and Russia, considered as “Western”, cannot join. (Even though some considers them part of Asia-Pacific.)
    4. China and Taiwan, also cannot join.
    5. Anyone outside JKP alliance can only talk to the JKP body. No per nation agreements.
    6. Nations afraid to make a strong statement for and against China/Russia and the West, won't be considered for membership. This new body should never ever turn into another ASEAN.
    7. There will also be cultural exchanges, easy access to workforce to boost the economy and R&D (which in turn will help the military and the technologies of JKP), and education sharing and improvements.
    8. The ultimate goal is to achieve and form a Confederacy of Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
Far-fetched? With the recent changes and developments, like Japan and Korea getting closer than ever, and both countries are also helping the Philippines, even donating, I wouldn't say it is far-fetched. We are at a turning point in history, we just have to do this right, despite China and the West working to keep the status quo.
If we're being squished and used by these superpowers, then we should stand together to keep them both in check. The seeds have been planted years ago. Only free Asians can protect Asia. We can keep both of them at bay, at the same time, use them to keep them in check. Together we're stronger and more capable. Let's break the status quo they are keeping us in.

"So your 1940 claims are null and void by the 1700 map of the Philippine; yes?
Wrong. China has documented claims prior to 1700. But all that doesnt matter, because the law does not support historical claims from ALL parties, including PH.
What does matter are treaties. When the Spanish handed over sovereignty to the US, it did NOT specify any transfer of ANY islands in the SCS. And when the US handed sovereignty to PH, it also did NOT specify any transfer of ANY islands in the SCS. Whats transferred to PH is documented, its set in stone. PH does NOT have sovereignty over ANYTHING in the SCS, whether its a rock, reef or island.
"And speaking of 12nm how far is china again from the island they claim as theirs? thousand nm?"
Since China claims sovereignty over the islands, 0nm from the island, as the islands itself is part of China.

China doesn't not claimed Taiwan as it's own.
Taiwan's official name is the Republic of China, not the Republic of Taiwan.
Taiwan's own constitution states that Taiwan and Mainland China are part of the same country.
The government of Taiwan represented the whole of China in the UN security council up until 1972.
Taiwan's passports, birth certificates, money, death certificates all have the word China written in them or the word China in their names.
Even Taiwan's military, supreme court and police force is named after China.
If NATO Wants to be in Asia.
China will make an alliance with Russia,, Cambodia, North Korea, Belarus and Iran and then Chinese, Iranian, North Korean troops will be sent to Russia and Belarus borders with NATO in Europe and Iran in the Middle East.
If South Korea wants to get into a war with China China already has a pact of mutual defense with North Korea.
North Korea would literally be breathing on South Korea's capital and down its neck.
Japan can easily be blockaded from all fuel food and natural resources by the Chinese and the Russian navies and air forces.
    Philippines is non consequential.
Russia alone is manufacturing more weapons and ammunition than all of NATO combined.
Russia and China together would manufacture the United States and its allies in weapons and ammunition into oblivion.
Their would also out mobilize more me than the United States and its allies could mobilize 10x fold.

It wouldn't be nato like, it would be stronger nations defending smaller, more helpless ones. And unlike the EU, the mindset in Asia is very different from each other....they have a much more nationalistic than international mindset.

East Asia and South East Asia countries are not suitable for defense pacts like NATO because they are not located on the same continent.
In addition, Asian countries don't want to invade each other like European. Asians are much smarter.

That's what NATO always was. Major powers like Britain and France defending small countries from annexation, while the Superpower defends the major powers and minor countries both. And Europe was just as nationalistic as Asia, actually far more. Asian countries like Imperial Japan got their nationalism from Europe.

I'm fascinated by how the west is so committed to Ukraine and Taiwan's safety, territorial integrity and independence, but don't think Palestinians deserve the same, they're folding hands while the whole families are being wiped out in Gaza. The death toll is close 24000 now, they're rejecting the ceasefire proposals repeatedly and publicly defending war crimes. In case you're wondering why they care so much Ukrainians and Taiwanese, I have the answer, they actually don't, today Ukraine is almost out of men power, men have been wiped out, the west is quiet as women, teenagers and disabled as seen in the trenches in videos on the internet, quiet as people are being kidnapped on the streets, gyms, restaurants etc to be sent to die in the frontlines by the Ukrainian leadership, Taiwan will meet the same fate if this succeeds. These are strategic conflicts to erase powers like Russia and China for the restoration of the west dominance which is slowly fading, they care for neither the Ukrainians, nor the Taiwanese, they're just proxies used to launch conflicts. And I pray the Taiwanese don't fall in the same trap as the Ukrainians, but I'm not optimistic.

First there's a strategic point area, then there's a dormant binding energy either a potential energy or when awaken an energy in motion, then there's movement of each country to feed it's scopes and to aim for greenier pastures when potential advantage realized, then each region country become pro- active of binding at each other to create a physical structure from a bond in paper only to a bond of the better we regionally, then like a machine of motor wheel with connecting gear the better bigger motor wheel initiates the action potential and the smaller motor wheel connected to such whirl in synchrony piling up the greens, and each of them in a region began growing up light bulbs brighter and brighter and welcoming friends as inner core buddies of friends for benefit for only friends who can help them the most and not cause them headaches, then with their bulbs shed it's light realizing they have to eat whilst the iron is hot and store for the rainy days knowing when everything in that region undergo transformation as the global event change their initial bonds could change with the way they look at each other with a smile when there's competition start to brew on who is the fairest of them all in that region, and the story goes on, .....
