What most fans not familiar with this area of the country don't understand is that the Jets are a Queens/Brooklyn/Long Island team while the Giants are Manhattan, Westchester, and Northern Jersey. Moving the Jets to the other side of the Hudson is like moving any other team 150 miles away. The traffic going from LI to the Meadowlands is horrific. 3 hours each way for a 3 hour game. You spend more time driving than at the game unless you want to tailgate and make a whole day out of it. As a result, when the Jets have a "home" game, its usually filled with about 50% Jets fans, 25% of opposing teams fans, and 25% of Giants fans who can't get seats to Giants games. There is no home field advantage. It's been around since 2010 and I have never attended a game there and have no desire to do so. Jets need to move back to Queens next to CitiField

No space in Brooklyn or even Queens to build a retractable roof stadium. But what about in Nassau County or if closer to the city on a barge or reclaimed land in the East River? Manhattan or the Borough's? A true Jets home stadium. Able to host college bowl games and college basketball final 4's. International Soccer matches, and more Superbowls!!!

I was in this stadium for the first ever game with tickets in the field level club. Got to stand behind the Giants bench during the game which was a very cool element to see in a new stadium. Other than that, it was no big draw and I've never seen a reason to travel for another NFL game near New York City. It's quite plain as what should be a premier stadium.

As a Packer fan I love stadiums right in the heart of town. The Lions the Vikings and the Bears(for now) are downtown. I've thought that Met-Life stadium has been blah from the start. They have more seats than Lambeau but have some seats are just too far up.
That Jet's stadium plan was to be built over Hudson Yards so there would be no demolition needed and likely a much lower cost of real estate.

    • @thephantomeagle2
      @thephantomeagle2 4 місяці тому

@@SirJames917 Ok. I figured that, being built over a railyard would mean that it would be cheaper since they wouldn't have to worry about buying buildings, and demolishing them. • @DanTarrant1
    @DanTarrant1 9 місяців тому +22

I must say that I've never seen a game at MetLife, but from TV and pictures I don't really see why it "sucks". The design seems like your standard layout for football, and especially wanting to have a large number of seats with good sightlines. I also think it's cool how the stadiums lights and signage were set up to quickly change from Jets to Giants and vice versa so each team does get more of a home stadium feel when they're playing.
D-G is entitled to his opinions, but he seems to be obsessed with the idea that football stadiums need to have some sort of quirky design in the seating structure when really the "bowl with upperdeck" is the best design for providing good sightlines for the people actually using the stadium.
MetLife may be a little "boring", but you're there to see a football game and if your team is winning, who is going to care that the outside looks like an air conditioner?

It's bad because a stadium built for not one, but two teams in the biggest city in the country should be better than this. The fact it doesn't have a roof is frankly inexplicable to me. It's fine, but you already have teams willing to move on from other stadiums like FirstEnergy in Cleveland simply because it's boring, so clearly just being boring is in and of itself a justification to build a new stadium these days.

3: the roof was supposedly not gonna be retractable due to 2 airports in the 15 mile radius "teterboro and Newark Liberty" so if i remember correctly the season ticket holders said they wanted the open air advantage and they weren't looking at the bigger picture due to them not getting stadium revenues outside of football games and parking.

My Lions use play in Pontiac, they could have easily built a new stadium in the parking lot there, unfortunately the incompetent city of Pontiac didn’t see the forest from the trees and the Lions moved back the city of Detroit in 2002 in what is a cluster bleep with Comerica Park and Little Caesars Arena all built within walking distances, so parking, logistics are awful going there. I’m surprised the Jets didn’t return to Flushing and build a stadium on site of old Shea Stadium after Mets departed in 2008. MetLife is a cold, bland, boring, concrete & metal pit. It lacks character/charm & interesting design features. NFL players named it their least favorite place to play, especially because of its injury-prone artificial surface. The Jets should pack their bags as soon as possible & go back to their roots in Flushing, Queens. In over 35+ years, they have generally suffered in the Meadowlands. The crowd noise for the Jets was never louder than it was when they were at Shea. Find the end of the 1981 home game vs. Miami on UA-cam, and you'll see/hear what I mean.

MetLife stadium was built to have an advantage over all stadiums in ways no one has ever considered. While most new stadiums were built for the luxury standards - MetLife was built to eliminate most Luxuries in favor of upgrading the full standards of Necessities. 2 Examples:
    1. While most new stadiums are built to have a great view of the city, They end up with obstructed view seats of the field. MetLife stadium was built without the view and upgrade their seats to a point where it has the most spacious seats and no obstructed views. ( They had bad seats at first, But were removed )
    2. Most new stadiums with or without domes / retractable roofs end up with less than 200 concessions stands and limited restrooms resulting in long lines in both cases.
MetLife owners said NO to any roof and invested in full upgrades of those necessities and is the only stadium to have 800 concession stands and 1st class restrooms behind every seating sector of the building resulting in no waiting in long lines in either case.
In the long run - People will see how upgraded Necessities outweighs the Luxuries and everyone will realize why MetLife stadium is the real best stadium in the NFL. Sometimes the old ways are best.
Does it really matter if the building doesn't have a flashy design ?

    • @topace1038

I think the reason MetLife does not have a good view of the city is because of the wind. I went to MetLife for a December game in 2017. Let’s just say it was cold and the wind made it even colder. Imagining there being an opening in the stadium with a view of the city in the cold wind that area gets would not be fun. The bathrooms are alright. The lack of a lime is nice. Biggest issue with MetLife is how bland it is. It really does not feel like a Giants/Jets home game. Might have to do with both teams sucking but still. There are plenty of other Stadiums that are way better than MetLife just saying as a Giants fan.

There's nothing bland about that. If you would eat hot foods often - Cold weather wouldn't bother you much. When it comes to those palace dome stadiums, They might be more pleasing to the naked eye & more fun at first, But after a time it's not nearly as enjoyable because they start to feel like oversized arenas more than stadiums. This is just one of the reasons why places like AT&T & Lucas Oil stadium doesn't draw a sell out crowd anymore. It will happen to SOFi, Allegiant Stadium and others sooner or later. Real stadiums are made for Real outdoors.

It feels like the wind goes into the area where all the concessions and escalators are which can be pretty unpleasant. I wish they would close that area off more so you can at least duck into the concession area hallways if you need to warm up as opposed to needing to go to the bathrooms in order to escape. Again I don't want my Giants to play in a dome but my God at least have some personality and be built to provide some shelter from the elements for fans who cannot afford a box.

The only older Stadium worth saving was Old Yankee Stadium. I really don't like the new one in comparison. Not a fan friendly venue. And Madison Square Garden isn't fan friendly either. But with that renovation, and continuous renovations still occurring I don't see a change. That Jets idea to Queens, probably will not happen until 2035 and I mean actually becoming a reality. Something tells me they did not even try because It’s clear too much money was put into this mistake to give up so soon. They’re a jersey team now, aside from money, I’d imagine that commuting from Jersey to Queens for game days is not what anyone from the franchise wants. It’s a shame that a very large portion of the fanbase completely disregards going to home games because of the insane commitment to get there (and back) and when you do it’s a bad stadium with no life surrounding it, no bars, no restaurants, no nightlife. But just having warm weather doesn't guarantee a great game. NFL fans need to realize that. It would be good for the sport to move it around more. If the game there was played in bad weather, regardless of the score, years after the fact it would be remembered as one of, if not the most iconic SBs of all time. People don't remember games for being flawless - they remember them for how well one team outplayed the other and came out on top. That is why bad weather games are so famous. Metlife stadium seems fine to me. It's important to remember that this is an opinion video. Both teams appear to be filling the stadium on Sundays so it can't be that ungodly awful or intolerable.
As for the architecture itself, it looks fine to me. The comment about not seeing what is outside of the stadium while sitting inside the stadium makes little sense to me because...and do feel free to call me crazy...but I thought the idea was to observe what is going on INSIDE the stadium, which is why fans buy their tickets in the first place.
Every stadium location is not always scenic enough to justify a "view" of its surroundings. In some cities it works like Pittsburgh, San Francisco, etc but the focus should be on the fan experience inside of the stadium while the event is taking place.
...not to mention the creator of this video is bit too socially optimistic about the outside surroundings of a given stadium, in an era of which 1/3rd or more of the attending a fans are looking at their cell phones intermittently....attention spans are clearly not what they once were, having a "view" does not solve that issue in today's world.

    FACTS THAT CEMENTS ALL ARGUMENTS:
If every NFL stadium had a retractable roof or stylish dome - There would be no point in any NFL stadium to have natural grass fields. That would take away a big chunk of what most fans and players have come to love over the years. Even Worse - It would make NFL stadiums look like a big joke in comparison to most Soccer and Baseball Stadiums. They would all look like oversized fancy arenas. That alone proves domes of any kind are a big minus in the NFL. History is full of examples that proves dome stadiums don't pan out well in the long run regardless of how great the bulding design is.
If Giants and Jets fans are willing to spend big money to go to the games every year to a point where it sells out regularly - That alone proves they are not ashamed of what they have in MetLife Stadium. The best stadiums in any league are the ones that works for their fans in every way - Not just stylish buildings. MetLife Stadium is among them. Lambeau Field is among them. Arrowhead Stadium (GEHA Field) is among them. These are some of the real best stadiums in the NFL. Get my point ?

You've asserted that 80% of sports fans, worldwide, prefer an open air stadium and that the cost of domes or retractable roofs, inhibits the proper engineering and construction of infrastructure to allow easy access to and from those stadiums, hence dome stadiums have the worst parking and traffic in the NFL, therefore a big minus.
Though I am very confident, based on decades of testimony that Chicago Bears fans would severely beg to differ with you; as their open-air stadium, Soldier Field, is quite possibly the worst traffic and parking experience in the entire NFL, and has been for a very, very long time.

Some areas of the United States, as you are likely aware, require a dome or at least a retractable roof for NFL football such as Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Houston, due to climate.
The NFL will be seeing at least two new stadiums under construction shortly, the first is in Orchard Park for the Bills, an open-air design, and Nashville for the Titans, a fixed-roof design. Meanwhile the Jacksonville Jaguars are at least planning an ambitious redesign of their current stadium, which will include some kind of translucent roof. The Chicago Bears plan on building a fixed-roof stadium, likely in Arlington Heights, so the trend favors the roofs and the selling point is hosting year-round events.
So far we have a fixed-roof or retractable roof design in Minneapolis, Detroit, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Houston, Arlington (TX),
Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Glendale (AZ) with Nashville joining that growing list.
And what do we call Hard Rock Stadium in Miami? Is it a hybrid? It's mostly roofed but not completely...boggles the mind.

Every new stadium gets a superbowl pretty much. Metlife as a cold weather stadium got it mostly because the Maras are OG owners.

If you're inside watching the game, why do you need a sightline out of the stadium into suburban new jersey? Why is $1.6bn too much for a multi use 90k seat stadium in a union labour state?

The stadium sucks because it will sell out anyway.
There would be no monetary benefit from a nicer stadium.
They really do need to fix the field though.
It costs each time whenever a player gets hurt because of it.

I don't know any fan (Jets fan or Giants fan) that likes that stadium. I really wish the Jets would opt out in 2025. And if they're not going to opt out, at minimum add a roof.

In the last 23 Super Bowls, only 3 have been won by teams who play in domed stadiums. Unless the stadium is sitting in a desert or in an area with EXTREME weather (Minneapolis, Detroit), it's foolish to put a dome on it. Also, I don't get your dislike for Metlife. As a fan, here's what matters:
*Do all seats have good line of site?
*Can you see a large video scoreboard from all views?
*Do you have an enclosed club level?
*Do you have good concession options?
*Do you have a large area for tailgating?
Metlife scores well in all of those areas. My only critique would be that it doesn't have a natural grass surface for football.
