Yes. I am a volunteer at the Zoo. Now there is no more show. It is a presentation. And it has become a non-contact one so there's the barrier between humans and elephants. No more mahouts. It is much better and safer for both elephants and us.
I'm glad they ended the show. While you see no abuse you can tell by the elephants' demeanor they are not getting any enjoyment out of what they are doing and they show no affection to the trainers. Elephants can be trained to do all these tricks without using a hook or any cruelty, and have fun doing it. Sadly brutality behind the scenes is all too common. How much better to give the elephants enrichment toys and let them play naturally by themselves. Then the public gets to see them behaving like elephants and not circus clowns. They are immensely intelligent and loving animals, but these kinds of shows don't portray either of these wonderful characteristics of these endangered animals.
