Thanks for not just showing how to replace the belt, but also reminding a newbie about what the other belts do. My mechanic here in Mexico will do that for 200 pesos or about $10 U.S.! But I may go ahead and do it myself. 1998 XJ Sport. My daily driver down here.
It's much easier to run the belt last under the smooth water pump pulley as it would simply slide on versus trying to get it over a ribbed pulley. Also remember that a new belt will be tighter than the one you removed, so loosening the tension even further than you did will also help with reinstalling it. Good video for the DIYer.
That’s a gator belt, best & hard to find , they eliminate squiling noises. Assuming they stop selling because doesn’t put money in mechanics pockets & so forth
Hey, semi unrelated but what does that connector above the tensioner bolt go to? I broke mine while trying to loosen the pulley and I am not sure what part to go buy to replace it lol I was assuming some type of sensor in the cooling system?
Hi. That connector above the tensioner bolt (the one that shows up prominently in the video), goes to the temperature sensor that is embedded in the thermostat housing. That's where your engine temperature reading comes from.
When you readjusted the tension to get rid of that squeak , I assume you must first loosen that first bolt on the tensioner before readjusting, right? Any difference in a 2001 Cherokee and this model year?
Correct. You have to loosen the bolt on the tensioner first, make the belt tightness adjustment, then tighten the tensioner bolt again. 97-2001 Cherokees are all the same.
The only reason I came to this video was for you to show me HOW you got the belt on. And that is the only thing that you didn't show. All my bolts are loosened to the point of falling out and I still can't get it over the last pulley. What exactly is the point of your video? ☹️
First complaint I ever got about this video. There are diagrams available online on how to wind the belt. If it is wound correctly, you should have plenty of slack for positioning belt if the adjusters are in the max loose position.
Daughter & changed her belt in 20min start-to-finish (I love it when a plan comes together). Thanks a bunch.

Thanks! Nothing satisfies like a well maintained XJ. :) Good luck with your DIY maintenance!

Amazon sells a Duratech, long(as in above the radiator support), boxed end/ratcheting 15mm wrench that worked like butter.

Thank you so much for your help👏🏽

Thanks for that.
thank you ...
Dude... you can get a wrench in there without taking the e-fan off? Why didn't I watch your video first.
That would help but mine has power steering so I don't have that bolt
Mine has power steering too. The bolt positioning should be the same. Is yours a 1998?
that belt looks brand new
It was developing cracks in it. The mechanic wanted to replace it...for too much money. It's simple enough to do it yourself.
