The new preferred double (for me) is tuba!

In our modern age of shrinkage, depending on your
market that you are in, the best double for tenor trombone as a commercial player now seems to be Tuba. Back when I was coming up in the music business, that was not the case. The best double would be Bass Trombone, because of the prevalence of so many working big bands. Now that the big bands have given way to combos and more trade style bands, it seems that the best double has become Tuba. Even when playing a Broadway style show my double is not Bass Trombone. Most shows now only have one trombone and if I have a double it’s on Tuba.

Never used it for a commercial gig. Thought about it, but never used it on a big band. I was thinking about changes in commercial doubling, not classical. For that, nothing has changed: alto & euphonium are still the doubles for me.
