Cary Grant’s characters always seemed to have a hidden depth to them and now learning a little bit about his personal background it all makes sense. He will always be a role model of class style and wit for me.
Mr Leech need never have worried about being a fraud, he was the epitome and template of what a Hollywood star should be. A template I might add that would serve a lot of actors today well to follow.

Cary Grant (Archibald Leach) was a cockney who did not have the highly refined speech of a member of the elite upper class such as Laurence Olivier or Richard Burton who although having also come from more humble origins, were able to mimic upper class speech. This must have gnawed at his ego constantly. He was a male "Elizah Dolittle" who was never schooled as Elizah was schooled by professor Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady/Pygmaleon" to pass for upper class and correctly pronounce: "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain". Michael Caine, who was also cockney, was able to jump this hurdle when in "Zulu Dawn" he played the role of an elite upper class military officer who is forced to overcome his pampered weaknesses.
Lawrence Olivier and Richard Burton were classically trained. Cary Grant wasn’t. That’s likely why they could speak with the BBC accent. But Cary Grant had a wonderful Mid Atlantic/Trans Atlantic accent that was extremely popular until after WWII. Cary Grant could still speak that way because he was English and the accent was a mixture of American and English dialects.
