- O Frango Dong Tao também conhecido como frango Dragão é uma raça rara e endêmica do Vietnã . A característica marcante dessa raça são as pernas feias, grandes e ásperas.
Esta é uma raça de galinha tradicional da aldeia de Dong Tao, no distrito de Khoai Chau, província de Hung Yen.
As galinhas Dong Tao são apreciadas como uma iguaria no Vietnã e já foram criadas exclusivamente para serem servidas à família real e aos mandarins, eram usadas em rituais sagrados. Hoje em dia são servidas em restaurantes de luxo.
O frango Dong Tao pertence à lista das raras e preciosas raças de aves do Vietnã, atualmente com recursos genéticos preservados.
Os pés dessas aves são grandes, firmes e ásperos, quanto maiores as pernas, maior o valor do frango. As pernas das Galinhas Dong Tao podem ser tão grossas quanto o pulso de um humano. A grossura de suas pernas não é incomum apenas para galinhas; é raro para qualquer tipo de ave do tamanho delas.
Os pés são geralmente curtos, e existem 2 tipos: Redondos e planos.
O frango Dong Tao possui duas linhagens: frango puro-sangue F1 e frango intermediário F2. O preço de ambas as linhas também é muito diferente, isso porque os frangos de raça pura não são muitos e a criação é muito difícil. Portanto, o preço alto é compreensível. Seu preço pode variar de 2 a 3 mil dólares, e ficam mais caros durante as comemorações do ano novo lunar vietnamita, o Tet.
Uma dúzia de ovos galados também pode passar dos 2 mil dólares.
Levam de 8 meses a 1 ano para ficarem prontos para o abate.
O peso médio das aves adultas é de 4,5 kg, mas os galos podem chegar aos 6 kg.
Eles são geralmente vermelhos de peito preto, e as galinhas apresentam cores variadas. Branco, amarelo claro e marrom claro.
As galinhas são muito vulneráveis às variações do clima e põem menos ovos do que as galinhas normais.
Elas põem de 60 a 70 ovos por ano, e chocam, mas não são boas para incubar os ovos, seus pés gigantes quebram os ovos na maioria das vezes, por isso quase todas as ninhadas saem em chocadeiras.
As aves jovens demoram para ficar emplumadas.
É uma raça que não gosta muito de confinamento, é ideal que o galinheiro seja bastante espaçoso.
Os galos costumam ser agressivos.
A Aldeia de Đông Tảo continua a cultivar a grande maioria dessas galinhas. Embora as origens exatas da raça sejam desconhecidas, ela existe há centenas de anos e acredita-se que tenha sido criada para briga de galos devido às suas pernas grandes e robustas.
