Thanks for watching Superworms & Mealworms in our Feeder Insect Series and be sure to check out the Feeder Insect Playlist to see other great projects. I keep and breed my own Super and Mealworms. This is a small basic set up to meet the needs of my reptiles and luckily my success has been so great that I'm overrun with worms so I purposely limit the number of beetles I keep.
It's best using larger drawers if possible especially with Superworms due to their cannibalistic nature, but if properly fed and the pen is kept clean you'll be okay. There are many substrate options but I use oats, some say to microwave it if you see mites etc but I have not had that problem and I believe it's possible when putting foods directly onto the substrate and not the eggs crates, humidity related or just bad oats🤷🏽♂️ but it's an option to consider.

If this was not WORMTASTIC I don't know what is. You have a great sense of humor :)
Thanks so much Cham🙂
Im my experience, the mesh on the beetle bin is more trouble than it's worth. There is always a mess everywhere. You can't pull the beetle drawer without pulling another below or bran and eggs fall everywhere. You are going to be sifting your larvae, which means you will have a sifter. So why not just sift the beetle bin every couple weeks or a month when you want to make a nursery bin? If the beetles are given moisture regularly, the eggs will be safe from them. It's a much simpler setup, much cleaner, and doesn't require destroying one of the bins. I've done it both ways and the choice is easy.
You've made something I despise very intriguing, A few of my friends enjoy eating mealworms but I can't bring myself to doing it =(
I've heard of people eating them also but I'll pass as well🙃
This video is full of great information. 😎
Thank you very much Sir🙂
WOW. Amazing video. This has been the BEST super/meal worm breeding video I've found. Well articulated, to-the-point, and you got everything covered in there PLUS more. The mesh screen bin is absolute genius, and now I feel I must do this for my new set-up. The transfer of eggs was the last thing I was looking forward to.
I appreciate it very much, I know yours will be awesome .

what’s the difference between meele worms and super worms?
Same Question.. ^_^
@@nae8052 Sorry I'm now seeing this, I never got an alert. In my opinion they are similar but mealworms are smaller and have a tougher exoskeleton shell that's a digestive issue for reptiles like Chameleons . Meal worms can also be refrigerated to extend longevity. Superworms are the better healthier choice but are bigger and will put up a fight.
This was informative and entertaining, you have a unique approach to your videos👍👍👍
Agreed!
Thank means a lot thank you
@@djazzzyd358 Thank you
Very interesting and a great way to set them all up actually. Thanks for sharing.
Ahh Crikey... Thanks so much!😉
I'm wondering if chickens can eat superworms
It may be possible they can but mealworms would be the cheaper alternative since they are smaller and convert quickly, but be sure to confirm if that's safe to do😉
Very well put together I learned a lot today. The credits and the ending was funny, what happened to that bug lol?
I'm glad you got something out of it and as for the beatle he was mistakenly left out so I rescued him 🤣
Hi! Great video, very useful. One question, how long can you keep the mealworms in the fridge? And after that, they just reproduce normally like nothing happen? Thank you!
Sorry now seeing this, I'm getting most alerts for some reason. I usually feed then well then refrigerate for a month or two. When I take them out and add fresh bedding and food, they continue to rock and roll in about an hour or so🙂
Stay Safe!
Thank you very much!!! Stay safe you too
Hey I want to start doing this. Do you need water crystles for the beetles?
I usually put moist veggies like carrots, sweet potatoes. I'm sure it will work but I try to avoid moisture for mold etc
take a tissue or any paper without ink, make it into a ball and make it wet
voila
@@MrZaccaz thanks, your a genius 🤯😂
I used to use film canisters with a few small holes drilled in the top. Worked really good.
Does the Beatles keep reproducing or just once
The beatles lay eggs throughout their short lifespan of a few months
thank you, thank you for this incredible and super helpful video !!
Do you ever get grain mites?
No I haven't. I recall someone asking that in the past, and another said microwave the oats
hi thank for the videos. I am from pakistan and want to do meal worms breading. can you ship 1000 worms? if yes do let me know about the price.
This was so awesome and you have so many of them. My reptiles love these so I better turn my phone off quickly before they get excited
I hear ya🤣
Great video. I bought that same bin at Walmart and did the mesh than was unsure of what else to do and if I put additional mesh on other bins. Your video made me understand it completely so I liked and subscribed. Thank you
What size screening did you use
That was funny how they all crawled away at the end. You're really into insects huh?
Actually I'm not into insects It's
just best to raise your own whenever possible to ensure your reptiles get healthy, clean and nutritious feeders. This video is part of my Insect feeder series and I have one more video to go "Dubia Roaches" and it's a good one😉
@@kripkethechameleonfriends4505 That's awesome I'll watch them all
How would you go about keeping moths out of these. I have a severe moth problem when i leave any grains unsealed like this.
1:05 - the forbidden olives
I was wondering if you could send me a list of the things that I need to buy and I was wondering what is the mesh called and where can I buy it.
Thank you for this very informative video. I've just started mealworm farming in a 3 drawer bin like this but your video showed me a couple things I was doing wrong or did know about. Now to take superworms!!
Thank you 🙂
Wheres the beetle and superworm ventilation
I found out that useing oat/wheat bran is much easier in my opinion
Buy a hot wheels suit case, it can hold up to 64 super worms
what size mesh is used for eggs to drop through?
What country are you from, and where is your mealworms bought from?
I'm in the USA and I got them from a reptile show. You can also get them online
The screen how do the baby's get through it. Because mine have live babies I've never seen eggs. And mine are stinking. How can I clean them?
Sorry now seeing this. They lay eggs and I shake the mesh every few weeks and they end up in the correct trays. I few stragglers remained here and there but overall they moved over
How many of each do you start out with
Where is your accent from?
thanks to your videos.
I'm interested in growing worms as dog food!!!! Any ideas?
I've only used for reptiles but glad I could help🙂
Pesticides have been found in Quaker Oats... wouldn't it be better to use organic oats?

😁
I got chickens and Gracie’s and hedgehogs…I need worms daily
Grow more. I'm in the same position...go thru 500 super worms in 3weeks.....am trying to raise my own now
I did something a lot like this, and at first it was a huge success. It produced mealworms alright, and it saved me many trips to the pet store. Unfortunately it was also extremely easy for grain moths to infiltrate and lay their eggs. It took me a long time to figure out why this was happening, it was so bad I kept finding their little larvae crawling across my ceiling and dropping down. I keep them in a tupperware bin with wire mesh on the top, but even that doesn't seem to be enough to keep them out sometimes. I don't think the one I bought is as airtight as I thought it was. That or I need to get Amour fine-mesh.
Wow sorry to hear that, it has never happened to me so far and I've been doing this for over 4 years now prior to getting my Chameleon Kripke
Looks like a nice set up and you seem like a good guy but this is a little confusing to the beginner like me .. might be better to do regular mealworms and supers separately . Thanks for you effort . Dan
This was awesome with a really great ending =)
LOL Thanks
Kinkachoo looks so adorable. I don't know much about raising bugs but this was entertaining and I was laughing so hard at the end.
Yes these were a great group of acting worms lol. Our KinKaChu just turned 13 yesterday and she enjoying watching her dad direct and produce this video📽🎬😉
Saya Aris dari Indonesia. Saya sudah like dan subscribe. Mau tanya umur berapa bulan ulat di jadikan kepompong / kumbang? Pemberian pakan ulat atau kumbang berapa hari sekali? Terima kasih bila berkenan menjawab. 🙏👌👍
Sorry for the late response. It depends, likely around 2 inches. I change and replace foods every 2 days
Thank you. GBU. 🙏👌👍
Have you had any problems with mites? I'm a budding super worm breeder, but all I seem to do well is breed mites. I have a mite outbreak now in my adult beetle container. can I remove the beetles and put them in fresh substrate?
I've heard of it but never had that issue. Are you using oats as well? I've heard that microwaving the oats kills any possibility of mites, eggs etc.
Yes remove them and start over with fresh crates etc and keep foods off the substrate as well. Thanks for stopping by🙃
Can anyone help? I’m trying to breed mealworms but they keep drying up and dying
It might be that it is too cold/hot for them to pupate, so they die from age and it looks like they dry up. Check your temperature. Another thing that might help- try shredding your carrot/potato and spreading it around the cage, so they don't have to search for moisture. That has helped for me, and hope it helps you!
Wiggly Whiskers than you I really appreciate your help
Wiggly Whiskers thank*
Sorry I am now seeing this, for some reason I was not getting alerts. That was a great answer by Wiggly Whiskers👍
my vegies are getting moldy, what should I do? I
Sorry for the late response. Feed as much as they can consume daily and change more often if needed
I came here just for the content.
best video. i was planning the same setup.
👍🏼
Loved the video, it was very informative. I was asked if I wanted to raise mealworms by friends and relatives who want them for fishing and pets but I am still researching before I agree. How many kg of oats (or other food) do I need for 1 kg of mealworms? Just a rough estimate would help, as I need to calculate of the time and food I have to put in is worth it.
Usually you just need 2 cups and you can change the bedding every 2-3 days.
Sorry now seeing this, and great answer by Queer Polyanna👍
It's insane how many steps you have to take to raise these worms, but you nailed it especially on the entertainment
There are a few steps but you quickly get the hang of it. Thanks so much for checking it out😊
Question. So you dont have to microwave oats to prevent mite?
Sorry I did not get an alert to your question and I'm now seeing this. I've heard of some microwaving the oats for mites and other bugs but personally I haven't experience those problems, but I'm sure it does not hurt to try🙂
I always thought a meal worm and super worm were the same species, the super worm was raised on a growth hormone to grow to a larger size. If this is not the case, will the super worm a remain the same size even after going through their life cycle?
Is screening a standard size?
I dobut it, it depends on the brand and store.
How many day to remove mealworm from box to get egg ?
Not fully sure what you're asking but hopefully I'm answering correctly. I leave the eggs with the beatle and once the eggs hatch and baby worms are visible I transfer them to the to other tub with worms only and change the bedding every few weeks or sooner depending it's condition🙂
I love how you say drawers 💖
😅 DRAw ers💞
Do they need water ?
They hydrate themselves with the veggies, carrots etc
Beautiful explanation than other videos thank you
how about water dude
I usually only put water crystals for dubia roaches, adding that to these bedded enclosures can quikly cause mold, so they get their necessary moisture from the carrots etc and doing great for years
Thanks this was very helpful!
New reptile 🦎 owner here
Awesome and congrats on your little one. Happy Holidays!
I'm considering raising some super meal worms for fishing. My question is, are super meal worms the same as regular meal worms, they've just been fed a growth hormone? If not, will super meal worms grow to be super mealy's or will the offspring be smaller? Thanks for your reply.
Superworms are a very different species. They require different breeding processes. He does cover this but he covers both so I can see why you are a bit confused. When you re-watch, be sure to pay attention to the fact that superworms need to be isolated, cannot be refrigerated and have a much longer cycle to mature. It is a very good video but he does cover them together and I can see why you got them a bit confused. I prefer superworms because they offer more control - take longer and they won't really pupate until I am ready to have them do so.
I am an Indonesian superworms breeder, eager to sell abroad, but I am confused, do not have acquaintances and do not know how
I'm not sure I guess you can try Amazon or eBay USA or research vendors in the USA
Do you know what size mesh you used for your egg sorting beetle bin? I have leftover aluminum window screen from my 40 Gal tank lid I'm hoping will work
My apologies, I no longer have the specs but the eggs are super tiny and just about anything would work😊
Hey I got a couple questions if u don't mind. I kinda have the same set up as you but smaller drawers. First ? Is how are you keeping them heated and all? I had mine in the drawer with ceramic heat for warmth and it wasn't holding the heat, so then the drawers I have the mealworms in I took them Out the shelf and have them side by side. I'm producing LOTS of pupae and in turn lots of beetles. The thing is I'm not "seeing" any eggs and not getting mealworms from the eggs. I went as far as buying a mini microscope to see if I can see any eggs but to me i don't. Ive waited the 2 weeks for them to mate and all the above. I'm having lots of beetles but no eggs. I have 70% humidity and there kept at almost 80°. I just cant get eggs. HELP ME PLEASE. Thank you I can send u pictures of my set up if need be.
My home central air conditioning averages around 78 degrees year long so I never had to use a heat source. The eggs are really hard to see and even when hatched you won't notice the babies for sometime. I began with 300 mealworms and ended up with a lot over time, then I began to refrigerate most to slow down the cycle while the remaining continued the process. Mealworms are simple unlike Superworms, so my only suggestion is start off with many, feed well, keep the bedding clean and it will flourish in time.
I enjoyed your video.
Thank you very much🙂
Do you ever have a problem with mites? also is there enough moister for baby super worms in the lower container? And lastly the adult super worms don’t chow down on the baby super worms?
I heard people say mites but I haven't had any at all. The more space the better, but oddly with enough bedding and proper feeding/maintenance, my young did well with the older and eventually grew out to feeding/breeding size
Thank you we at hazel creek heritage farm have just started our mealworm journey. Thanx for all the incredible info and advice! Subscribed!!
Thank you very much!🥰
I just use a double edged karambit to poke holes for ventilation 🤷 works fine 🫠
How do you prevent or keep fruit flies/gnats/ flying bugs from taking over superworm bin. What am I doing wrong?
Sorry to hear that, it sounds like some sort of moisture issue. If so maybe reduce the amounts of food and change the bedding more often. Be sure to keep foods fresh and no spoilage in the bin and also maybe hang a fly sticky near by until you get control of the situation. I've heard some people complain of mites and lightly microwaving the bedding helped. I hope it works out for you.
Take Care & Stay Safe!
do the beetles tend to climb out of the plastic bins? The only screen was on the bottom to allow you to sift the eggs out. Without a screen on the top, I am wondering if the escape. I wouldn't want beetles in my home but I am considering your operation.
No they don't, and for extra protection from escaping I suggested scotch tape at the sides to make them slip even further as seen at time 2:35 in the video.
Hey love your setup. One question. What size of wire mesh did you use? I don't want to get it to small. Thanks.
Sorry for the late response. I would say very fine mesh because the eggs are like needle puncture size.
I hope you are aware that these worms can eat plastic! Would love to know your learnings and experience on the same,
That may be possible but I haven't experienced that in the 5+ years I've been breeding them.. Wax worms are likely more aggressive with plastics
I'm just wounding. Could I use individual yogourt containers to change them from worms to pupa?
As worms or beetles, I would keep them in something much bigger long term with fresh bedding. As pupae, those small containers should be fine then move out as beetles.
Gross but interesting! A great way to save money on food for sure.
Yea I've been asked to make these videos for sometime now, so I finally got around to it🙃
Hi great video. How do you clean out your superworms, separating the substrate. I use oats. The diameter of the oats pieces are similar to the worms, so they may fall through the holes at the same time if I use a sieve?
Especially when babies are born it can be a bit hectic. I honestly just do it manually..and usually enjoy watching my little creations🥰
I'm sure there are sorting vids out there tho
That was the best video I’ve found! Feeling very confident to get this project started for my Chickens, ducks & quail. 😊
Thank you and I wish you the best 🙂
In your experience, what are the foods that bring the best results, such as bigger and fatter worms?
Random veggies in general. You can feed a lot but just be sure to be on top of removing spoiled foods and do frequent bedding changes 😊
I never headr of superworms. Are they super big mealworms or a different species?
Superworms and Mealworms are different. However giant mealworms also exist🙂
Stay Safe!
So do you guys just keep the beetles to continue to lay eggs until they die? Or do you use them as feeders as well
Sorry for the late response. I allow the beatles to live full lives and not as feeders
Question
is there any substitute for the oats? Thanks!
Some people use wheat bran, but It's possible other options are out there.
@@kripkethechameleonfriends4505 can i maybe use rice husk, or is it too much for them?
@@ElectronicGamerzPersonally I have not heard of that being used, but you never know but be sure to research it first🙂
@@kripkethechameleonfriends4505 okay, thanks for the advice!
This is a really good video - definitely on my way to the store to buy the set up materials
👍🏼
If I wanna consume 40 worms a day in food, what's a good number of beetle to maintain?
Sorry now seeing this. Assuming your speaking of mealworms, start off with a lot so you can have a consistent flow. 1K worms, pupae and beetles each, feed often, remove uneaten food just before it spoils and swap out bedding every few weeks. Keep the temps around 80°
That's what I did then had to slow down because I was producing and converting too many.
Superworms are slower converting the worms to beetles as seen in the video
How do you keep beetles alive ? Just carrots and potatoes and oats
That's much it, it worked for years. You can always choose different types of bedding etc
What do you do with the beetles? Do they die quickly or feed them to your pets?
Sorry for the late response. I allow them to live their lives and don't use them as feeders
Does your encounter molds in your bedding?
No, I put the food on top the egg crate and not in the substrate and I change their food every few days. I also don't have any humidity issues in my home so I'm sure that helps as well.
Can you keep the super worms and mealworms In the same container
No the Superworms are larger and can be vicious, they will kill the Mealworms
You're very creative and the music complimented it perfectly. We got the silkworm eggs and my wife is setting it up with my daughter right now. Keep up the great work with these educational videos.
Thank you and that's so awesome, I'm sure you guy will enjoy raising them with your daughter🙂
Great video! New to your channel!!
Thanks so much!
Can i put light when they already pupate? So it can add heat to speed up its pupate stage?
Personally, I have not tried but you can let me know how it turns out
What is the white stuff on top of the egg crate in the second drawer?
Sorry I did not get an alert and now seeing this. It's cuttlebone (calcium )
Also what are the temperatures you shoot for high and low?
Sorry not sure why I did not see this. I try to keep them mid to upper 70's
what about water? do they drink any?
I'm sure there are other options but moist veggies words best for me limiting the amount of mold, etc
I've had problems with pantry moths getting into my oats. Did you ever have that?
Luckily I haven't had that problem, I've heard some complain of all kinds of bugs and they microwaved it first.
