This would work as a capacitor charge indicator, but battery charge is not linear with voltage. A 12V battery would essentially be fully discharged when your circuit indicated 80%
Is that all depends on the use case. You could be rectifying the voltage down to 3.3 or 5 volts and have this in line. I know the battery will eventually not be able to recharge after discharging that low, but if you're only planning on using the battery once, it can display how much time you have left.
Good idea but it should be noted that the voltage of a battery is only meaningful if the battery is under load I.e. being used. Measuring a battery float voltage (I.e. not connected to anything,) means nothing about battery condition. It could give you a reading of 12v but immediately drop to under 9v when you connect it to the item it is powering especially if it is a motor or a globe for example. Have your nice meter connected to the battery while it is connected to what ever device it is powering and it will give a more accurate reflection of the state of the battery while being used. Just my comment. Otherwise thanks for sharing the circuit.

If the voltage is stable under load then the battery is in good condition,, if the voltage keeps falling or falls lower than the devices threshold operating voltage then you know there’s a problem with the battery and it’s time for a new one, or there is a problem with the charging if it’s a rechargeable battery. This does of course assuming that the battery is working under its normal condition. Does not apply if the battery is being over loaded or short circuited.
Not strictly true. There is a very clear relationship between a Lead Acid batteries state of charge and it's "at rest voltage" in fact this is the only way you can test it without doing a full capacity discharge test with a proper battery SOC tester. Voltage under load is meaningless without some rather advanced analysis of the load itself, and the battery type and size. Applying a load to a small battery will give a VERY different voltage compared to applying the same load to a larger battery, independent of battery State of Charge. Problem is that the battery voltage at rest has a range of from 12.7 - 10.5V representing 100% SOC to 0% SOC, thus this meter however is more of a Go/NoGo meter. Even at 80% Voltage, the battery is effectively flat.
this is a really interesting project and a cool example to show voltage dividers, but one crucial point is that this cannot be 100% accurate if you use 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100% linear scale. this is because typically red LEDs have 1.7-2.0V drop and blue LEDs have 3.0-3.3V drop so you either have to use six to seven reds, or four to five blues to use linear scale
Ah, thank you! I was wondering about that, since I've heard different colors can draw different current usage, is it true that the green leds use the least amount of current? Yet I believe that the orange LEDs when the TV is off are the best.

This is because most of color LEDs are due to chemistry of the silicon of the diode which makes them glow in those color waves. The LED on your remote control that points to the device is actually an infrared LED. There are also some LEDs that are capable of more than one color due to having multiple set of LEDs on it and they're called RGB LEDs. Current and Voltage is not something that a component "use". its a basic parameter of the electric waves, current being how fast the "flow" of electric waves and voltage being how much energy the wave carry. typically if the power supply has a constant voltage the current changes to fit the power draw, or vice versa. Either way you can check out the manufacturer's specs of each LED to figure out how much voltage drop it induces on your circuit.
The accuracy of this indicator is about the same as aiming rubble at a target. The design itself is cool because it is simple and works, but as a charge indicator it is not suitable.

Basically when a 12-volt battery drops down to 12.1 or 12.2 it's on the very low side 12.6 it's fully charged it's just matter designing one with right resistors the right voltage you desire red for overcharging green for good yellow on the low side red when you're at 12 volts.

Actually "path of least resistance" is misleading, and LEDs are not modeled as resistances. There's a lot going on to talk about in this circuit. Path of least resistance: When people use this phrase, they often talk about thunder and lightning, and a more accurate way to describe lightning is path of least breakdown voltage. The air is actually infinite resistance until the voltage is high enough to tear an outer electron off the air atoms and ionize it, and then the resistance becomes finite because electrons have become mobile and there is a path for current to flow. Electricity can be more accurately said to follow all paths of conductance (which is 1 / resistance) in proportion to their conductance. For example if there is a 1 ohm (conductance = 1) and a 2 ohm (conductance = 1/2) path in parallel, twice as much current would flow in the 1 ohm path than the 2 ohm path. But here there is something even trickier happening in this circuit. LEDs have a property called a forward voltage, and this is sort of similar to the breakdown voltage for lightning. The way LEDs work is when there is less voltage than the forward voltage across them, then no current flows (actually the cutoff is not perfectly sharp but it is close enough for this). The LED is sort of like an overflowing bucket, when the level is below the limit, none flows out, but when it's over the limit everything extra flows out and you can't raise the level above the top of the bucket by much. If you look at how the closest LED's path is connected, it only has to overcome the voltage of one LED to light up. The next LED begins to light up when there is enough more voltage for the 2nd LED (the 2nd "bucket") to overflow into the first one. And so on down the chain. The resistors are important because without the flow constriction, all of the available current would just pour into the first LED, which would both prevent voltage from building up enough to light the 2nd but more importantly would simply destroy the first LED if the current wasn't limited. I hope this provides enough background to understand what's happening!

how do you know which resistors to go with? Let's say I want to test 4 x 18650 batteries.
The voltage detecting function is actually a function of the LEDiodes forward transfer voltage (Volt Drop). Resistors are only for brightness.

Now just add two green LED's at the end. Green means go, so when battery is fully charged then it's good to go.

If your 12v battery is only 8v then it is below 0% and not 60. Your circuit is good but it needs other values so that 11.5 is about 0%
