Wait. Watcher did this while only having 3 million subscribers?

@@SherbetAlex yeah,it was a terrible idea to do this especially with such a small community. they previously worked for buzzfeed but they quit like 4 years ago and started their own channel. funny thing is one of the 3 co owners always said stuff like eat the rich and it's okay to steal from big corporations and now they are the ones becoming corporation.

Are some of those ad free ads for a service that is even more ad free?
Dropout worked because there was multiple shows and ideas that they already had but I don't know how the watcher will work as a streaming service
Also when they started it, they were still doing UA-cam content because everyone still kind of thought the Facebook pivot to video was happening
also it was done to save the group of people who made that content, and to keep the content from totally disappearing
Dropout worked cuz the price is actually worth it
How many shows in watcher I'd actually watch?
The ghost files? Became too long and the editor decided to put 10-30% of nothing happening and not even scary/thrilling [for watchtime]
2-3, 8/10 shows isn't worth 6 dollars a month (especially if the 2-3 shows are only uploaded 30% of the year)
For me on the other hand, I already paid for Nebula. To pay for dropout it would have to be REALLY GOOD, and from the little snippets I've seen on shorts. YEP It is almost worth paying for both nebula and dropout. Almost
Plus they have episode long videos with high production that make for good tv along with multiple different shows and some good advertising, a good cast with comedians/entertainers people like etc. A lot went into making it work
Also so much of their content is released to UA-cam for free anyway

oh, so that's why the "zach morris is trash" series never continued. damn shame.
Man, don’t forget to also guilt everyone into supporting your Patreon too and tell them that the “better” “complete” version of the video you made will be only available through Patreon as having UA-cam is now effectively a preview service for their content now instead of when it was free! And please lay on the guilt and gaslight as hard as possible!
Man, in Watcher's case, they didn't even do that. They just randomly dropped a video yesterday going, "No more videos on UA-cam! Pay $5.99 a month, or $59.99."
But yours is also a common tactic of course lol I don't even mind the Patreon thing. But Watcher is pretending like they have a huge spread of channels that would make them effectively like Netflix Lite. Their content is incredible, but it's still pretty light, with only three of their shows being worth watching by the numbers. Personally, I only enjoy two of the three. They just aren't in a position where this dream is viable for them.

Gonna do my part and boost Dropout as actually being worth the price, since the service was kind of the only way the company could survive, so instead of just grabbing for money, they played their cards right and are producing a lot of high value content now.
Oh yeah, Dropout actually has like... shows, which is the biggest difference here. I can spend $6 and see directly the impact that paying for the streaming service has too. Like I only care about a few things, but the production quality is top notch and they've got longform content comparable to like, actual stuff you see on TV in terms of entertainment and their production quality is much better than the average youtuber's. Which isn't ragging on yourtubers, just, they very well show that the money is being used to pay their people well and make their shows charming.
The deadpan "We didn't think those things" kills me
I can't wait till youtubers have premium extra ultra patron edition where videos would be divided into three parts and each part can be accessed by paying more and more money all hail the UA-cam overlords!! 🙂

ok but dropout/collegehumor’s streaming service is actually worth it and makes stuff the fans want to see
It is really not what collegehumor used to be though, as in not 'the same but not free anymore'
They upload content just about every day with multiple series whereas Watcher does one a week and they only do one show at a time. So with Dropout you're getting 20ish videos a month versus with Watcher you'd get 4
they have several long-running tentpole series + brand recognition + strong social media presence and most of the more popular shows feel TV quality with great production design. Watcher is just reposting all their UA-cam videos behind a paywall
@@Teauma Thats why they changed the name to Dropout. But also, you probably wouldn't want to pay to watch the old 4-5 minute skits anyways. CollegeHumor was designed to maximize ad revenue, but put a lot of production value into their skits anyways. in the modern tiktok-ified internet, that niche is a clustfuck, no way to maintain high volume and high production value.

All this shit with Watcher has genuinely been heartbreaking. I've been watching Shane and Ryan since the Unsolved days, and I was so excited and proud to see them go on this journey of making their own big channel. But now, I don't know how they're gonna recover from this ginormous blunder of a business decision.
College Humor did it when they rebranded to Dropout and honestly they put in the effort and their service is worth it.
they also did it out of desperation, not greed.. and we almost lost 20 years of content, without Dropout so much stuff would be gone forever.
