  • Ocean Rowing - Ep5- Atlantic the hard way -
In 2011 John set off alone to row the Atlantic from Gran Canaria to Barbados. 53 days at sea, the 2nd fastest solo Atlantic crossing on record at the time, it is still the equal 3rd fastest crossing in the record books. This is the full diary version of the crossing, warts and all, the frustration and tears and the toughest arrival of all my journey's.
Apologies for the quality of some of the footage, it was taken mostly with one original Gopro that didn't like the heat and wet and a couple of other camera's that had modest resolution.
John went on to set a Pacific Ocean Rowing record by becoming the first person in history to row, solo, non stop, continent to continent from North America to Australia. From San Fransisco to Cairns, a Solo Ocean Row consisting of 208 days at sea.
Completed in a pure rowing boat, i.e. no auto pilot, no dagger board, no wind catching (sailing) design elements, not a blowing boat.

Amazing, I'd be a nervous reck out in the middle the ocean in a small boat like that especially at night by myself. Kudos to you sir and stay safe.

The views of the sky at night must be unbelievable! Has anything spooky ever happened on these journeys you take?

Rowing at night is an incredible experience, especially in the southern hemisphere. Nothing too spooky to report, the Dorado (fish) swim close to the boat at night, they can resemble ghostly shadows in the water. Every now and again I would clump one on the head with an oar.

It's very difficult to stay on the right path just by rowing and the current is on different directions.

how do you get your fresh water, do you have a means of desalination or do you have a large storage?

Just found your channel, omg please be safe. I couldn’t do what you are doing on that little boat. Does your boat have an engine or is it purely you rowing?

Now an engine would be cheating, just oars and my sad old body, it's not as dangerous as you may think if you follow a few simple rules. Thanks for watching.
