  • Today I am doing an extreme declutter in my basement. I’ll be working on the unfinished part of the basement that has been neglected for years and filled with so much stuff 🤦‍♀️
This will definitely take me more than one week to go through everything and be able to declutter and organize it all so this will be part 1 of my basement declutter and organize.
Going through my house and declutteting room to room and drawer by drawer has been a ton of work and extremely rewarding. My house is so much more peaceful and enjoyable to be in ❤️
I hope you decide to declutter with me.

You’re the “comic relief” of decluttering. You’re so cute because you don’t take yourself too seriously.

I am the exact same way when cleaning XD I see a big mess that needs to be cleaned and go "Oh no... I don't want to..." But then as soon as you start, you start to see the progress and it's like "Why didn't I do this sooner?"
You are way too relatable when it comes to decluttering and organizing!
Pro tip: When you're cleaning a space and find too many papers to look through, place them in a box or pile. When you're done cleaning for the day, sit down on your couch or in a chair and look through the paper hoard slowly. Look through a little bit everyday until it's done. You never need to look through everything at once. Take it at your own pace!

I found the best way to get rid of a lot of garbage-make friends with the garbage man! Mine used to push my cans back up to my garage for me! I wish he was still in my area because I have a huge thick cardboard box to get rid of!

Ohhhh I love the clean out of this room. It looked so overwhelming at first. But you tackled it and did great. Quite a few years ago my sister and I did this at our moms house. We had so much fun. We organized all her decorations in plastic bins per holiday. This brings back wonderful memories for me. Thank you Jodi.

One thing you can do to deter mice is place cotton balls soaked in either peppermint or clove essential oil, in places they may becoming in, and places they may make nests. You inspire me to get downstairs and tackle the mess I've been avoiding.

Just came across your channel for the first time today. I inherited my sister's house when she passed. She was close to being a hoarder. A younger brother who is more or less transient also stored so much stuff here over the years. Add to that all my things. I have been slowly working on decluttering. It's been very overwhelming!! This video gives me hope. God bless you.

When I moved Christmas lights out of cardboard boxes and into plastic crates,. I cut up strips of the card board box, lengthwise, about a foot long, about 6 inches wide, and wrapped individual strands of lights around the cardboard piece and put them in the crate that way. It took time yet made the lights neater when it came to putting them out at Christmas and when it was time to put the lights back into storage 😁

In Sweden - and probably at a lot of places in the US - we have big recycling stations (in the bigger towns) where you can put electronics, glass, wood, paper, garden stuff, etc. At least here in Gothenburg, you can take your stuff for free 6 times per year, after that there is s small fee.

    • @alibali193
      @alibali193 2 роки тому

We are lucky in Scotland as we can go to the recycling depot as often as we need to. We can also arrange an uplift for furniture or bulky items up to 3 times a year for a small fee. They will even pick up refrigerators from the kerbside by appointment

Great job!!! For your tv’s and other electronic items (vcr’s, stereos, computers), check with your trash/recycle/waste management company. For my waste management company, they have trash, recycling and electronic drop off along with an area where people bring things that are still decent (tables, chairs, dressers, etc.) so others can go look through it all. And to move those tv’s, get a doly to move them. Makes it a whole lot easier. I purchased one years ago and use it for everything. As for paperwork…I moved to an apartment in 1999. I had a box of paper that I brought to the apartment. In 2020 I purchased a home and move the same box of paper to the new home…when I finally found it, I found so many things dated from 1995-1999!!! Now I shred once a week!

Well, my lovely daughters, didn't do their turns with dishes. It was a hot mess. They each did a turn yesterday and today. I woke up at 1am. So I got up and finished that kitchen, AGAIN! Your TV had a baby while you weren't looking! LOL GOD BLESS YOU! That is definitely not a day or week job. Take it slow for sure. There's a lot. It took a long time for it to get that cluttered so it's going to take a while to undo the clutter. That is totally understandable and not something you want to force yourself into doing for hours upon hours because then you just get disgusted and aggravated and overwhelmed. I totally don't blame you for taking it in bits and chunks as you said. One thing I give you a lot of credit for...you are able to do things when you can, in bite sizes. I can't do that. I don't know if it's my OCD or what, but if I'm going to be tackling a project, I cannot be interrupted and then come back to it. If I choose to clean the house on a Monday, that's ALL I'm doing Monday is cleaning. I will not be cooking a big supper, I will not be stopping at any stores, I may not even get out of my jammies since I like to clean in them, until I shower when I'm all done cleaning. I could never start and stop and start again. If I'm doing running, going to the grocery store, going to another store or two or making stops at places I need to run to do errands, that's all I'm doing that day. So I give you a lot of credit for being able to start and stop like that. I guess that's why no one way works for everybody because we are all different. Oh so fun, poker! I love playing poker and haven't done it in so long. I so agree with you with all the laundry stuff. Who cares what anyone says. I have pods and those unstoppables and dryer sheets, etc. Hey, it's something we use every single day and will always continue to use it so I'm glad to have tons as well and I too make sure my daughter will never have to buy it and my son probably won't have to buy it. I just hope I taught them enough over the years so that when I'm gone they don't ever pay full price for things. I know my daughter will be fine because she does use coupons and the rebate apps, etc. but my son says he would rather work and make the money and doesn't have time to do the coupon thing. Maybe that'll change when he's married. And we have artificial trees as well for our home because I would never be able to handle watering the tree, having pine needles all over my house, etc. Plus the cats...oh, which reminds me Jodi. We took in Jasper, a six-month old from outside that just really wanted to be in the house. He's a tiny one and really made himself at home. I took him to the vet already and have an appointment for him to be neutered but he got his shots and deworming, etc. already. So I think I'm at my max now for inside ones. Ten should do it. I know, I'm crazy but it's a slight addiction I think I have. I still have a VCR too and I won't get rid of it for the same reason. That's funny what your daughter said, your store has alcohol now. That made me laugh. And my daughter says the same thing...not the alcohol but she says "shopping at mom's." Jodi, it looks a-maz-ing! I love it. Those wood shelves are perfect and you can store sooo much! I definitely need more shelves in my basement because right now I have totes stacked on top of each other and the shelves I do have are full. It looks awesome though to have so many shelves of varied heights and sizes. That is perfect for your laundry items for sure. So glad you were able to accomplish so much. It really looks wonderful!! I'll bet you just feel enormously happy and you should be proud of yourself for all that work. Great job! OK, I'll close this chapter of my book for today...LOL. Everyone probably says things about all my comments being so long too but hey, I type fast since that's what I do for a living and I am quite chatty so putting those two things together makes for long comments. Are you getting slammed with a snow storm? We are supposed to get a nasty one Thursday and Friday and it's coming from your neck of the woods in MI. Hope you have a great Wednesday!

Hi🥰, this is the first of your videos I've watched and its really helped my anxiety when figuring out how to deal with allot of things in the house that need going through.
Also the comments from people here are really helpful too!
I live with my mum and we moved into a smaller house with not only plenty of our own things, but alllll the decades worth of keepsakes from our previous family home.
Over the years we've tried to sort through and declutter.
But theres still so much to do.
We have no real storage, no basement or garage.
The loft isn't accessible, we just have a small shed outside in the garden. So all the things you'd typically store in these places, I've struggled to find room in the house to store.
I also have allot of craft supplies which would look lovely organised.
I've been unwell for the past few years and it frustrates and really upsets me because I can't tackle projects like I used too.
I have way more anxiety about sorting through things, thats got worse the longer my medical issues have gone on and as pains got worse.
Its also stopped me making things, I used to make lots of different types of crafts. At the moment I knit and do some embroidery as its the easiest creative thing to do.
But I LOVE diy and painting, fixing things. My goal is to be able to do that again.
I used to love organising, I found it calming.
Before Christmas I managed to go through our kitchen, I was completely exhausted but loved having new places to put every thing once it was done.
I have so many things I want to do, I know exactly where I want everything.
But when your ill, so many days/weeks/years get lost in bad days.
A counsellor last year suggested I try just 30mins.
30mins a day and stop afterwards.
Stop all the pressure in my head of what I used to be able to do, all the expectations and over thinking.
If I felt like doing another 30mins I could but if not, I'd accomplished what I set out to do.
Thank you for making this funny and charming video, you've helped me feel ready to start that 30mins today.
And I've been delaying that for a long time, worrying about all the things I won't get done.
Instead of appreciating the things I will.
Its so easy to discount any progress and effort.
I have a note book for making lists, and on the top of every page is the phrase, progress not Perfection.
    I need to remember that.
Also I love that you have multiple things/supplies to store.
Its realistic, especially after the last 2years.
My most "adulting" moment came last month where I was able to restock our kitchen cupboard from the little pantry/baskets of extra things I'd made. (Which were all previously in the front room/anywhere we had space)
And that was only possible because I went through everything in December and organised.
    Full circle moment right there😂😂
Anyway, I'm off to watch part 2❤x x

In the early 2000's, I worked at Cracker Barrel restaurant and the retail section always had a big selection of adorable Beanie Babies. I think I bought abt 20 over the length of a year. When I moved in 2003 into my own apartment from my parent's house, I did donate abt 15 of the BBs....but I still have my absolute two faves: a little rat and ram, all in pretty shades of pink and purple. I just can't bear to part wth them lol.

U r brave & strong, JMD!! I followed u here from your extreme couponing channel. U r more bubbly than a bottle of champagne. I don’t know how u do it all. I am likewise on a decluttering journey, prompted by my coupon stockpile. Good heavens, the hardest part of moving my newbie stockpile is that it requires me to declutter 2 rooms. Before I could move my stockpile out of my bedroom, I had to clean & organize my son’s old bedroom to make room for everything. I’m about 80% done, Jodi! One day soon, when I place that final bottle of Eucerin or Elvive or Persil neatly on my new shelving unit, I’ll get to reclaim my bedroom at long last. I’m going to celebrate by painting my bedroom PINK! I’ve been wanting to do that for years. Here’s to wide open spaces!

Hey Jodi! Another satisfying video as always. The before and after is like day and night. That beautiful jewelry cabinet/hutch is a real gem. I just couldn’t take my eyes off of it 😍 I totally agree with you about fancy labeling. I just use a piece of paper to write down what it is and tape it on my jars in the kitchen. When I run out of something., I just peel the label and pop the jar in the dishwasher. Then I’m free to do whatever I want to do with it. So convenient. I’m excited to see the part two. Thank you for taking us with your journey ❤️

Yes fancy labels are pretty but non fancy work just as well. I love that you switch them out as needed.

Oh my gosh this was so satisfying. My moms basement is so much worse but now it seems like cleaning it out might not be impossible after all.
I’d keep one of those tv’s for your VCR and any old game consoles. The new tv’s aren’t very compatible with old tech. Otherwise I’m afraid you might have to send it to the curb.
    Can’t wait for part 2!

We called our town and they actually came and picked up our old TV. We just had to have it outside for them. Check if your town offers those services. I had no idea until my neighbor told me.

Keep the VCR !! Or sell it ... they actually sell. I always see flippers buying them at thrift stores and selling them on eBay! There are people who still collect VHS tapes so they will always need VCRs !
...but it's a tool 🤣😂 I was cracking up so hard.

For TV recycling :: check and see if your community has an electronics recycling event where people can bring big things like TV's and appliances
When I lived in the Midwest they had them in my town, Peoria and when I lived in California they had them more frequently, in most cities

You can take the old TVs and other electronics to Best Buy. They usually give you a $5 store credit. OR join your local Buy Nothing group. You post pictures of your outgrown kids toys, tvs, anything. You can do PPU ( porch pick up) so you don’t even drive to drop off. For smaller items or kids clothes, put a Rubbermaid tote outside to keep items dry until it’s picked up.

😆 I love when you said I don't want to do it you guys. I feel the exact same way about my garage. In fact I said I don't want to do it, I don't want to do it. Then I said if Jodi can declutter her basement you can declutter your garage. I'm still working on the garage. I've only worked on it for one hour. Hopefully it will look as good as your decluttered basement looks. When I'm done decuttering.

Hi from Wyoming! Stumbled upon your post and love it! Your presentation is fun and interesting. You are funny and so entertaining while getting things done. Envy your finding the VCR. I have about 150 VHS tapes that we still enjoy watching. My dog saw the power cord hanging down one day last fall, pulled it off the shelf and it smashed!! I plan to watch past posts of yours while I recover from Covid. Can’t think of anything better to do at all! Here’s to you, a new friend! 💐☕️
