  • It's that time again. There's so much value in dethatching a cool season lawn, and it's so satisfying.

I’ve done it twice this year. I’ve never seen my grass look better than it is right now. It’s a little patchy right now but it’s beginning to fill in with nitrogen blitzing. Granted I have taken the steps this year to supply the lawn with proper watering, nutrient supplements and humic, but I think dethatching really turned the lawn around. Such an important step.

I hauled off two pickup trucks full of thatch last week. The response from the existing turf was amazing!

Of course, my project was 42,000 SF and it took me three days to realize the benefits.

Totally agree with this video, Jimmy. Dethatching is good for the lawn and good for the soul. 👍👍👍 Good luck at the soccer game.

My lawn is having issues since I dethatched 2 years ago. I ended up with bent grass and many more types of grasses. 12 years ago I started this lawn with topsoil (New Build) so it was Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass blend. I gave up this year. I am only person in this area using anything to try and control weeds. I will dethatch again this fall and use more herbicide and hit the lawn hard in the early spring with Tenacity.

I’m thinking I will do dethatching yearly and scarifying for my overseeding. I think it’s a nice maintenance program and as long as you are not doing it aggressively you will still have a small amount of thatch in there

I do it right before I over-seed with winter rye grass in October. I am in Phoenix.

Hi Jimmy. Thanks for the video. Your lawns look sensational. Have set my mind to do ours this weekend. I have a mains powered machine. Which blade set did you use in the machine (the solid steel blade types, or sprung wire tines)

Jimmy , I have a smaller yard than yours, probably 4000 sq ft. I've never dethatched my bermuda and was thinking of getting one of these type units.
Could I get away with buying the battery version of one of them??
    Since it's smaller, your thoughts?

Thoughts on spring dethatching on cool season grass? Can’t get to it this fall, plus it’s stressed/fungus issue.

Anytime the grass is actively growing is great. For cool season lawns spring and fall is perfect.

I prefer to verticut than to dethatch because verticutting also pulls up thatch while cutting into the actual ground and opening it up.

For sure. I should’ve mentioned I was using the scarifier attachment.

Do you normally do your annual dethatch in the fall? I dethatched this spring and was wondering if I should change to the fall.

I have zoysia. I mow it a little high. I detached my lawn almost 2 tears ago in the spring. It was unreal how much I had to pick up. So is the fall a better time to dethatch? Also, how short would I need to cut my grass to do a good job detaching it?

I like to de thatch in the fall myself. I cut it low, around 2.5” before I start. You can also do early spring. This is assuming you have cool season grass

Can you do a review of that sweet-ass black boat at your neighbor's?! Anyway, doesn't aeration do the same thing but with an added benefit of actually penetrating the ground? If you HAVE to dethatch can you buy a blade to put on the mower or do you need a machine? I remember when I was a kid my dad just threw on a special blade with prongs. Thanks for your videos!

Good to do both. Dethatch and aerate. Neither one replaces the other. However I usually aerate before I overseed. For me with cool season lawn I do it in the fall when temps start to hit the 50’s at night

This is the most reasonably priced one. The battery one shown in the video is pretty expensive.
