The sad thing was that, even if it started out as a con, she did genuinely love David in the end and she has literally never said otherwise. Usually she cracks and gives herself up in the end but even when her and Pat row two years after this and Pat brings up her track record of husbands, Janine still tells her not to talk about "her David" when Pat mentions him.
