Dr. Keener is now ordained Assemblies of God as I am. I'm also a seminary graduate, and avoid the hyper emotionalism and anti-intellectualism. I ground my teaching in Scripture, not experience.
When we became engaged with believing the gifts existed, we met in small groups for months before doing anything in public. As a former coach, I knew we needed to practice many, many times before we “Play a game with an audience”. It was essential to make most of our gross errors in private before messing up in public.
This is awesome advice! Im trying to learn more about the gifts, i believe but praying to God to help my unbelief and doubt, my uneasiness being in assemblies where everyone is speaking in tongues and prophesying, desiring i could also but doubting what is happening, practicing and learning in private for a while is such a great idea! Practice in small groups and learn to take baby steps.
No large commentary on the Book of Acts in 2,000 years...explain, please.
A - 1 Cor 2; "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God:
for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are
spiritually discerned."
B - As a practice, the Roman Catholic Church didn't pass the scriptures around.
C - Protestant Christianity (see item A )
Word only is as dangerous as Spirit only. We MUST have both equally for a true, personal, deep, and gift-based relationship with God. It's definitely a narrow path.
