- Pat Bowcock explains how she left her 9-5 lifestyle to live in tune with the land, creating her own five acre permaculture smallholding, that is her home, her work and her life.
Pat's smallholding, Ourganics Evolving Systems, features a large polytunnel, a flood garden and a forest garden, all of which she harvests and sells to the local community. The local spring is used to water the crops which then joins the River Bride and a small caravan and yurt offer a place to stay, providing extra income.
Ourganics Evolving Systems is a real example of how off-grid living is a labour of love where work and play are interchangeable and a job doesn't mean paying rent, but living a richer life.

This lady was my inspiration when I started looking into going off grid and seeing her doing everything at her age just confirmed that I can do this at 47. Soon I will be moving to my own little paradise and living this life. Thank you for being such an inspiration.

I’ve watched this documentary so many times it’s just great. My youngest son has land in Devon. When he was 17 years old. He had a plan for a small village for tiny homes/ container homes. For people who could not afford a house in Devon. Lots of local people working for local businesses can’t afford to buy homes here. Beach huts cost over £250,000 here. So he got in contact with the PM . They put him in touch with the local MP all said it was a great plan. He thought this plan could help people all over the UK .But the local council said the nearest bus stop was not near to the land. He had a fully financed plan . All homes had land for permaculture. Lots of young people and retired people were interested in living their. Young people who could not afford a home here and retired people who wanted to down size their homes. There’s lots of holiday homes here but local people can’t afford to buy. We need new laws to help people get a home,

My wife and I decided to do the same thing 8 months ago. We harvest rainwater for drinking, showering and dishes. River water is for toilet, garden and washing machine (top loader so not heater) All our power is solar, this powers pumps, lights, power tools, kitchen appliances etc. The fridge and stove are gas. We are loving it and have not looked back for one second. Things that had to go were wife's hair dryer (2000w) vacuum cleaner (1600w) and all my high power tools such as Radial Arm saw, planner (woodworking) and welding machine, cut off machine and large angle grinder (steel work) We get by just fine. Unfortunately our ground does not allow for much growing but some form of a tunnel is going to be built in the near future. Our chicken pen is now about half built and I have managed to persuade a local bee keeper to let me have two bee hives and show me the ropes ... watch this space.

I bet if a doctor looked at her they'd find a super healthy person. This is what we need to become a healthy culture.
She makes it seem so easy now, it's hard to tell right away that the land is the result of years and years of hard work..
That's what people don't realise, how much work they would need to do to live that kind of life.
I grew up on a homestead and my summer holidays were spent chopping firewood, foraging, preserving food and taking care of livestock.
It is not easy.
Happy woman. Real human.

You’re my kind of person! I just turned 49 this year and can relate to what you were saying about ideas and wanting to bring the to fruition and feeling time quickly slipping by. We moved Off Grid in North central Washington at a high elevation, we currently have to haul in water. We do plan to install water collecting systems. My husband god bless him, likes to do stuff his way, I am always trying to get him onboard with the permaculture way of living.

my dream....i am 62 and i had the dream for more than 25 years, however money has been an issue all my life...but i have faith and i dream and study and learn because i am having my land and my dream...
You can start small. Get a small garden and develop it. I'm doing the same as I can't afford a big property. I've got a 400m2 garden this spring and that's my start.
Lolitabonita: Don't give up. Just try in a tiny way. I am older, when I was married we planned to do this, but things happened and here I am... I have had health issues, but I'm trying to get better and I'm trying not to give up. Even in little ways I am trying to work with my new health issues and do a small aspect of this dream. I've got only 200m2 garden, it's tiny, but it's something. I am so happy every evening when i am waterring my little green heaven. So relaxed, when you Can hear birds, see butterflies and smell that gorgeous plants. Also I try to save energies by not using hair dryer, television etc. You can do small steps to be closer to your dream

There is enough land on our planet for us all to aquire a piece . However greed and power in the wrong hands have crushed that from every being reality.
There is enough land suitable for agriculture for us *all* to get about 4,000 square feet of growing space. It's not a lot. But great and inspiring work has been done by people like John Jeavons on food systems optimized for very small spaces. It can be done, but it is an intensive challenge!
Not enough water and also who gets the shitty non- arable land are you going to force people to relocate from where they grew up? Its a lovely utopian idea, but in practice it doesn't work and is very naive...
At the moment I myself have found land I did not have to buy and now trying to build a cabin with hopes of building many and it's just sad that not many people see how this life is better for us..I offered some friends to come take land as well they have no interest but now look what is going on in the world now

We are the same age and I have been gardening about the number of years. I feel like a whimp when I watch this but I also feel inspired.
I am a senior and my husband (upper midwest USA) and while we may not be able to employ everything here we are walking this same path. Wish we would have done it sooner but there is still some time to taste this life and we are going for it!! 😉🐝🦋

Sonia Lilly I have 300 tasks of land and I am looking for a woman from Canada or North American to be my partner and want to work hard the land. We can produce everything and I have ocean view, river and creek I am building a country house I have mangoes and other fruit. You have to be kind and humble from 30 to 40 white with children it does not matter. that you like to go free naked in the forest we have everything you just have to work a bit and you will live a beautiful life eating what you sow

Very inspirational life style
I lived off grid growing large gardens, fruit trees, berries, veges ,make syrup. Built my cabin mostly from materials found on site. Did have outside job for xtra bucks, will to live totally without that income would be difficult.
Abundance is the key word for me from what she talks about.
