  • This is a Video requested by a viewer/commenter specifically on MedSurg RN's
    Medsurg RN's are the majority of nurses, essentially all 'bedside nursing' is medsurg in a basic sense. Of course, bedside can still be further broken down into specialties, e.g. peds, renal, cardiac, neuro, etc. But when you usually think of a hospital nurse, you're likely picturing a medsurg nurse.
    Here I discuss and note some aspects of medsurg nursing in this video. Some of the comparisons and pitfalls.
    Warning: it's a longish video although it's discussed in a generality here. If the original commenter or anyone would like a specific topic discussed more in-depth, i can do another video more specifically. i just didn't want to post an hours long dissertation on my opinion of the whole genre. xD Hope this helps though!

    That's amazing!!! Congratulations 🎉
    I remember when you were still thinking about this whole craziness! 😅
    Don't worry too much, if that organization like mine we typically dont let the externs do too much 😅
    Id expect some charting with cosign, maybe prepping meds with rn (abx mixes, maybe drawing up insulin, omnicell work).
    But listen, watch, practice (if you can), and offer to help (just like nursing student).
    I would limit nurse station time to only with your rn. Sitting nurses stand out...not in a good way 😅
    Good luck and the finish line is right there!!!! Woot!

    Really enjoyed this video, sir. I'll be reaching one year as a med surg nurse on 7/11/24. To say the least, you do see everything in med surg. Keep up the videos, I really enjoy them

    Monday, I start working as a nurse extern in the float pool and picking up some periop assisting work prn. I am aiming for the OR after graduation. I am nervous about the externship. No idea what to really expect.

    I’m about to start my last semester of nursing school and got a job as a student nurse assistant that is floating to all the medsurg units. I must be honest, I’m totally turned off by it. Is it just because I’m doing the bottom of the barrel work? It’s so hard to take care of 10 rooms so the nurses have to take care of a lot of the tech work too. I’m feeling really disappointed that I’m not feeling it.

      yeah, tech work vs RN work are two totally different aspects even though alot of the work is similar/same. in fact, on some units there aren't any techs so the RNs do all that work themselves. but maybe it's the environment vs the work? i.e. acute setting vs subacute or outpatient, etc.
      also, floating to many units is totally different than having a home unit, e.g. living in a RV versus a house.
      another thought is you're not a RN yet, RNs are notorious for being hierarchal. think high school on steroids 😖maybe it's how everyone is interacting with you?
      i'd suggest trying to spend more time on a specific unit and see how you like that and also trying out various units the same way to "taste test". hopefully, one of them strikes a chord with you rather than hitting a nerve. 😅
      good luck and pls let us know how it goes!

    I’m in my last semester of nursing school and caught a DUI on Independence Day and the board probably won’t clear me to sit for NCLEX. Any suggestions? It really sucks, and I feel like a complete degenerate.

      ooof. 😣
      call a lawyer first and foremost. maybe even get 2nd opinion too. even before you go to your school counselor/advisor. they're still school employees, attorney is on your side no matter what.
      study and finish school. they do have the right to kick you out but be an absolute role model citizen from here on out.
      i'm not approving of what you did. and frankly, i think you should stop drinking, period. definitely never mix the two again.
      but start with the above to get yourself back on track. we don't approve of such acts but we also can forgive and move on.
      good luck!

    In my opinion as a new grad medsurg nurse, medsurg is not hard. What makes it hard are the toxic coworkers.

    • @olddadnurse
      @olddadnurse  9 днів тому

      oh definitely, toxic coworkers can make or break a job, nursing or other field. but i do find in nursing, it's a lot more opportunity to be catty/petty vs other fields like teaching (another female dominated field).

    Do you need 10000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time?

    • @olddadnurse
      @olddadnurse  14 днів тому

      nobody "needs" that. it'd be nice, like finishing off the boss level but not something i strive for everyday.
      thanks though!
