I miss another one showing how to assembly back. When you disassembly for the first time you have no idea the kind of details you should pay attention. The position of the parts in those screws with nylon tubes, the focus ring and some other parts I had to assembly by trying and error. But in the end I could assembly right and the lens is back in the business. I spent 7 hours in total. Now, after learning all this, I think I could do it again in about an hour. Thank you for the nice video.
Wow, these things are a work of art on the inside. I had no idea all that was in there, boards, caps etc. Great video but I wouldn't have the guts to try this one myself.
Great video, thanks. I ordered the part on ebay and took some photos with my cell phone as I went along. I organized the parts on two pieces of masking tape. One sticky up and one overlapping lengthwise sticky down and stuck to my desk. I took notes as to what the parts were for and which photo etc. on the non sticky part and stuck the screws to the sticky part. It worked great. It took me two tries as I didn't make sure the focus arm was in the little slot when I put that part together but you just saved me a bunch of money and its pretty cool having fixed it. thanks.
glad to hear this helped.. the reason i did this vid was to help me reassemble it all back.. back then i wasn't able to find a clear vid / tutorial of the disassembly.. might as well diy than spend $$$..
Hi, Firstly many thanks to your video I managed to open my lens and make a small repair but not to do with the ribbon cable, the video is very good and it inspired me to try and repair it myself or send it in with a cost of £80 GBP it took me an hour from start to finish. I am now subscribed to you and will watch with interest. Again many thanks for the great video!!
I can't remove the assembly at 9:30 I've done everything else exactly. I did notice that the last of the ribbon cables on mine was different in that it did not have the attached black plastic bar you used to pry it out. So maybe I have a slightly different version of this lens.
Damjan M Yes, there were more screws to be removed than I'd thought at the 4:45 to 5:45 segment that hold the top part together. I originally just removed enough to take off the ring as shown in the video but there are more that hold the lower piece together.
One one other thing I screwed up was that I didn't have it zoomed at 1/2 position so 3 little pieces fell out that when I was at the last step and I had some issues figuring out where they went. But I got it after reviewing the video and my own images.
Awesome video, thanks! I have this lens and it has the hunting focus problem. Someone said this can be caused by the "focus position sensor" being dirty. Does anyone know where those sensors are? Apparently there are two of them. This sounds like a reasonable explanation for the hunting, but I also wonder if anyone has any other theories?
Make sure you video it if someday in a far future your 15-85 is broken (I hope not). I just open mine (only the back side) because the focus ring was loose (after return from repair). I just dont want to send it again for that small issue. Apparently it wasn't placed on the correct place. Back side is very similary with this. Thanks for your video :)
i've got no idea, try cleaning your lens contacts.. i experienced err02 when shooting in higher apertures and found that replacing that specific flex cable works.. and it did..
now, my lens is completely in 1000 part,. and now? were can I find the part on the end? and what will it cost,.? and is this the problem for the stuck lens??
HELLO FRIEND, I NEED HELP AND I AM OF BRAZIL. I changed the DIAPHRAGM FLEX FOCUS BUT TO TEST THE LENS FOCUS IS, BUT TO GIVE THE IMAGE blurs ZOOM, FOCUS MOTOR SEEMS TO WANT TO WORK, BUT DOES NOT FOCUS, FLEX WOULD BE DEFECTIVE? MOUNT OR WRONG?
hi just wanna ask if the focusing ring of this lens just rotate continiously. i just bought a used 1 of this and try the focusing ring and it dont have a stiping point.is it normal. tnx.
You see where he pulled the lens assembly out at 16:14? There's a flex cable there that's attached to it. My brother in law accidentally ripped that cable while trying to change the aperture cable. Is there any place you can buy a replacement for it? What is it even called and what is it for?
+Oberonjames look on eBay, I just ordered one, cost me around 1.70 dollars or you can get the cable with the bit already soldered for around 14 dollars.
+Sylvester Fritz Yeah, but I don't know what it's called and therefore couldn't find it on eBay. I couldn't figure out what it was for either. What is it actually for?
thank you for info. I have problem with Canon 18-200 f3.5-5.6 IS lens. After two years of noproblem function of IS , it sometimes gets jammed in strange vibration of IS unit. No error code is displayed, but stabilisation "vibrate" in viewfinder. Do you think the cause can be cable ? Thanks
Gracias otra vez. Jordi de Alcoy (Alicante) España.
Hi, I have question about these 3 major screws in 11:23. I encountered a problem when re-screwing. There are no threads in these 3 holes, but there are 3 small metal straps with threads which probably should be attached to the inner tube. Any hints?
Szczepan Motyka Can you share how you managed to do this? I had this exact same problem: The little metal straps fell inside and I couldn't find exactly where they go. I looked at all kinds of videos and I can only see them from the outside, not inside.
I bought sigma 17-50 2.8 and didn't want to use this lens anymore. It's been a while since I assembled the lens so now it's extremely difficult to recall how I managed. As I remember these metal straps you got to put in these 3 long gaps and screw them, otherwise it will fall out, shorter gaps you fill with white caps. Sorry I might be unhelpful but now I just can't help you. Good luck!
Szczepan Motyka Thanks! After some time scratching my head, I just put the whole thing in a shoebox and went to bed. Today, I tried it again with a fresh head and I discovered where they go. It's *not* obvious at all, but it worked! I put the whole thing back and everything is working, except for manual focus (Grrr). Now, to open it again (someday) and fix that... :)
Thank for the video but I have a question. Is there any calibration necessary after assembly? Any screws that needs to go exactly in the same place? Thanks
Thank you so much for the video. The zoom mechanism was sticky and would not rotate. The shop the fixed it last didn't tighenten the screws on the ring. i was able to fix.
Hi there! I managed to change the flex cable, it wasnt that hard to do. BUT while testing I realized that the manual focus didnt work at all. Autofocus works fine but the manual is gone. It rotates easily but nothing happens. Must open it again but any ideas what to look for?
for a used lens, it's worth the money and has a useful range.. my copy's sweet spot was around 5.6 to 8.. if you'd like to know more about it try checking out the-digital-picture website..
Hi, I'm from cordoba veracruz Mexico, I need to know where I can get the flex cable for the damaged reemplasar your video is very good thanks .. I hope you can help me to get it thanks
Help! If anyone still here, i'm stuck at 9.30. Mine doesn't come of like it shows in the video. I removed everything upon this point but still no luck. What am i missing?
Great video cheers, anyone know if its possible to order the flex cable with the final lens part already soldered together, don't fancy the soldering bit at all ! :)
Huge problem with this video: it starts being tremendously helpful, but stops just when things get really messy, i.e. unsoldering / re-soldering the flex cable. At this point, your only alternative is to buy the whole diaphragm + flex cable assembly... Immensely frustrating to be let down like that.
Damjan M Hi just check if all the screws are removed, but after doing all above, my focus and zoom don't work anymore. I have to buy a new lens :( A lot of work for nothing. I'm sorry no good help for you. But I gave it a try :)
you can see the link where i purchased the flex cable from the video's description se puede ver el enlace donde compré el cable de la flexión de la descripción del video
Genuinely useful. Just swapped this part and now the diaphragm is working and focus isn’t hunting. Magic.

yep... pulled the lens apart and cannot for the life of me get it back together... Why don't ANY of these videos have the full dis and re assembly.
Play it in reverse.
I can't remove the assembly at 9:30 I've done everything else exactly. I did notice that the last of the ribbon cables on mine was different in that it did not have the attached black plastic bar you used to pry it out. So maybe I have a slightly different version of this lens.
Sam Chaney I have the same problems. Have you maybe found the solution?
Damjan M Yes, there were more screws to be removed than I'd thought at the 4:45 to 5:45 segment that hold the top part together. I originally just removed enough to take off the ring as shown in the video but there are more that hold the lower piece together.

I need screws for the part that's being taken off at 10:37. Any ideas?
great help, thanks for this. clear in focus and to the point, much better than others i have seen.
thanks, now it works again! I save a lot of money! Let's have a beer if you come in italy!
Does anybody know what size the screwdriver is at 1:00. My precision set has some really small screwdrivers in it but none THAT small. Thanks
Make sure you video it if someday in a far future your 15-85 is broken (I hope not). I just open mine (only the back side) because the focus ring was loose (after return from repair). I just dont want to send it again for that small issue. Apparently it wasn't placed on the correct place. Back side is very similary with this. Thanks for your video :)
yes it's normal for that to happen. That's an integral part of the "full time manual focus" design.
i've got no idea, try cleaning your lens contacts.. i experienced err02 when shooting in higher apertures and found that replacing that specific flex cable works.. and it did..
now, my lens is completely in 1000 part,. and now? were can I find the part on the end? and what will it cost,.? and is this the problem for the stuck lens??
okay, the cable is on the link, but is this the problem solver for my 'stuck @17mm' problem?
the lens works correctly after the reparation. thanks a lot for the video, has it been useful for me. regards

@unlokia if it's any consolation I'm a metalhead.. i obviously can't use those because of copyright stuff.. my voice ain't that great either.. ;-)

how do you know that is the exact ribbon (flex cable) you need? there are 4 ribbons,
no prob.. great writeup, it helps a lot of peeps having all this info out there..

sorry, man.. i don't have the lens anymore.. the video was my only reference, i should've took pictures while doing.. :/
Digitized Chaos I've managed to assemble it. Lens works perfectly. Maybe I will shot a video for the others struggling with this.

Greit...

Thanx a lot....finish replacing my flexi cable...nice work dude...
how did you diagnose that the cable is faulty ?
for a used lens, it's worth the money and has a useful range.. my copy's sweet spot was around 5.6 to 8.. if you'd like to know more about it try checking out the-digital-picture website..
Hi, I'm from cordoba veracruz Mexico, I need to know where I can get the flex cable for the damaged reemplasar your video is very good thanks .. I hope you can help me to get it thanks

i'm glad this helped..
10:43 this part broke off by me... :(
So replacing the flex cable also fixed focus hunting? This would help me a lot! Thanks for the comment.
i have Error 01, communication between lens and camera is faulty,
i don't own this lens anymore, but yeah, i think i remember the focus ring just rotates continuously.
i have a 15-85, but didn't dare to open it yet since it's still working.. :D not sure if this vid for the 17-85 helps though.. sorry..
Help! If anyone still here, i'm stuck at 9.30. Mine doesn't come of like it shows in the video. I removed everything upon this point but still no luck. What am i missing?

i didn't account for alignment & calibration, sorry.. but maybe if your camera has the lens microadjustment feature then i guess you could use that..
great tutorial with 1080p
Who actually assembles these things?
Thanks you very much , now i can take a photos.
Where did you buy the flex from?
Stephane Cauley it's in the video description
LOVE the music!! What IS that?
the flex cable at 16:56 was the one i replaced..
@MikeNeij - i updated the vid's description with a link where i bought the cable from. hope this helps.
Digitized Chaos
Digitized Chaos
i'm glad this vid helped you out. :)
GIVEN RIGHT, THANK YOU RAN
Thanks mate helped lots, I just had to align things properly when reassembling.Focus was fine, maybe someone needs glasses lol.
Good video, but the music in the background sucks so hard at some point I had to mute it after three minutes!
I agree. 😂
Nice tutorial. But next time, try to shoot your videos with a smaller aperture.. Most of the time your acting outside the focus zone.
Thanks, very useful!
Hi, I removed up to 9.30 minutes but than I can't separate the parts. Does someone know what to do?
Carla Leliveld I have the same problem. Have you maybe found the solution?
Damjan M Hi just check if all the screws are removed, but after doing all above, my focus and zoom don't work anymore. I have to buy a new lens :(
A lot of work for nothing. I'm sorry no good help for you. But I gave it a try :)
Carla Leliveld yeah, it's a mess also in my case.... :(
you're welcome! i'm glad it worked. :)

HTH :)
that music is a nightmare :-D, come on...
Is this music (?) really necessary?

Why the music? This is important stuff, you should be telling people what you are doing, and how to do it. Bad video.
