Well, well, the sequel(prequel?) to the shield only run. Much more difficult than Dark Souls 2, just as fun with way more pain and less damage.

What's messed up is this is pretty much how the DS3 shield only run goes. The pierce shield is one of the best shields in the game because of the thrust damage. The only one that is objectively better is the Giant Door Shield, but you have to beat either Yhorm or Friede with the Pierce Shield to get it.
as long as you can hit Yhorm's head when he does his two-handed slam, anything can beat him in a surprisingly reasonable amount of time by abusing his AI. I did it within a few minutes with boulder heave on an sl1 character.

Can't you get the Giant Door Shield If you Beat cursed Wood very early? I mean, it seems easy to Hit the ballsacks several times
@@878manu It's a DLC weapon. The DLC is entered by either killing all of the Lords of Cinder or by completing the Ashes of Ariendel DLC
I ended up using a Stone Greatshield for most of my playthrough that I farmed the Elder Ghrus for until I got the Door Shield

Always happy to see others doing stuff like this, too. I do a lot of shield only runs. The shield only platinum trophy grind on DS2 (scholar) was a slog. Anyway, some thoughts for anyone reading the comments and might be curious about trying a similar playthrough: usually when I run ds1 shield only, I go with the Knight, but Warrior is not a bad choice. You can buy a heater shield or pick up something like the knight shield regardless. Technically, you can use Paladin Leeroy to farm the bone wheel skeletons but you might not get lucky. What I like to do instead is armor up using the stone set from Darkroot Garden. A bit rough getting there in the first place, but worthwhile. Especially for Capra. Elemental upgrades seem cool, but split damage sucks sometimes and the dlc bosses have very high elemental defenses. Not to mention in the base game, Ornstein and GWYN have high lightning resistance. +15 is just fine, especially for the bonewheel, which is a powerhouse of a shield in DS1. If you build your stats right, the pierce shield is almost as good. The spiked shield is okay too, but requires a different build to really shine.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it, but if you go back to the ladder to get out of bounds in undead burg, its possible to jump over the Capra demon fog wall. If you aim for the right side and jump far enough, Capra won't aggro (the dogs will) and you can just wail on him. I actually just did this yesterday
Since Ornstein resists lightning, would it be easier to wait until after O&S to infuse the bonewheel shield with lightning?
