      Question... I'm going to order my Coil Packs and replace ASAP, for my 2011 N55 Sedan @ 60K miles - what spark plugs are recommending? NGK or Bosch? it's been a while, but have had a change of heart for another brand?
      Additionally, as I'm changing my Coil Packs and Plugs, prepping for Stage 1/2 - anything else you recommend while I'm at that state.... Thanks for your efforts, and keep doing what you're doing - let me know if there's anything I can do.

      It’s pretty easy to do. I’m somewhat mechanically incline, but not a pro by any means. Nuts, bolts, screws, sockets and screwdrivers. I bought the sparks and coils from FCP auto, but spend the extra $$$ on OEM parts. FCP stuff didn’t last very long. Products are guaranteed, but you’ll still have to pay for shipping/taxes when ordering replacements. After my third set, I went to OEM parts and they’ve lasted a lot longer.
      But screw Seattle BMW. Go independent or do it yourself. They wanted to charge me 1.5 hours of labor for replacing a taillight unit. I bought the part and installed it in 10 mins.

    Great video. I referenced your other video to remove the cowl but it's so dark it was hard to see. Some notes from my job. A headlamp is useful.
    I used a dab of dielectric grease on plugs. The coils did not come pre-greased. I only broke one thing - the plastic clip that holds the sensor on the left side, adjacent the cover.
    Removing the cowl is a little tricky due to wiring harness clips
    Remove the cover of the wiring housing plastic to see the bracket clips and it will be more obvious how to remove
    There’s one bolt at the back of the engine cover that’s hard to see
    The spark plugs go in at an angle, relative to the coil pack hole, so don’t panic that you are cross threading them

      N54 Lord 👍🏻 - a lot of the companies make the same parts for BMW, just without the stamp. As you probably already know 😀. When a lifetime warranty comes into play, that's when piece of mind comes into play! Thanks for adding a few of my DIY videos to your playlist! I sub'd to ya - 👌🏻👍🏻

    You gap them?

  • @deafdeadfishfloating

    Notice, their warranty is for (a) FAILED Item; not six.... so when a coilpack fails, and you wish to keep the set in a balanced (same lot, and age)... then they are NOT going to replace the 5 other coils because you think it's a 'good idea'.

    • @BMWFanatic
      @BMWFanatic  6 років тому +2

      Yeah I know - as long as they are all replaced, then replacing 1 bad one later on will not cause any harm.

    In one of your other videos you used/suggested Eldor Coils, is there a reason that you are going back to Delphi?

    • @thomasvuong4742
      @thomasvuong4742 7 років тому

      lokalzrule I had the same question???

    • @BMWFanatic
      @BMWFanatic  7 років тому +4

      lokalzrule FCP Euro doesn't stock the Eldor coils for the N54 (they have them for some other BMW engines). Delphi is still good as I used to run them prior to Eldor. Delphi or Eldor will always be better than the Bosch ones. The key is that I have the lifetime warranty, so really technically you can choose any of the two and run them until they fail. The lifetime warranty replacement really just trumps it all and gives you peace of mind.

      BMW Fanatic Hey I just changed my oil and spark plugs and coils packs. Everything went smoothly but when started check engine light came on and very tough idle to where it seems like it wants to turn off. I checked the plugs everything checked out. I'm not sure what it can be.

      kike1104 bosch. I'm not sure what happen but eventually it smoothed out and I reset my check engine light with the jb4 and it never came back on. The rough idle was for about 2 hours then stopped.

    I purchased Delphi GN10328 (via Amazon; on the porch the next morning) paid $4.00 (x6) more than FCeuro's package (x6) Delphi GN1057112B1.
    Observed that the plug-fitment' ends of the Delphi-coilpacks are 'pre-lubed' with what appeared to be silicon grease, but the grease needed a little more 'smearing' IMHO. (The removed stock Bosch coils showed white residual traces in the same area as well).
    I've seen complaints regarding the 'Flip Clip' at the top of the Delphi's (ALL models) as being being 'loose' in contrast to Bosch; I verified same. (Delphi is reported to have acknowleged this issue as true). The Bosch clip is indeed more robust... but they are both sufficiently IDENTICAL such that I (easily) removed the Delphi top clips and replaced them with the (used, but tighter fitment and 'snap') Bosch clips.
    The original plugs I removed were Bosch tri-trodes; -impossible to gap or check), a design thats impossible to gap. I ordered identical I.D. Bosch plugs FROM CHINA at a dirt cheap price; the boxes were printed: made in Germany, and the side of the plug was stamped identically (...germany.)... but a 'light blue' circle was on the body-porcelain of the originals, and not on the ones from China. Worse, one of the plugs had ONE electrode that was markedly closer than the others upon visual inspection (corrected same). I certainly suspect these are Chinese knock-offs..., but i dunno. 'German' plugs via China, cheaper than they can be found in Germany??
    Speaking of 'tri- trode' plugs: there is no evidence they provide a better spark than single or dual trode plugs, but they are popular on single-engine airplanes. The trend is towards using NKG single trode, and gapping them down a bit; but modifying for a push towards 500HP is a different animal in the combustion chamber; BMW engineers did not choose their plug specifications lightly.
    One advantage I see of the 'tri-tipped' is that 'radially unsymmetrical patterns' can be better discerned (by me anyway), which are a give-away that they neighboring injector (for the asymmetrically hit plug) WILL be needing attention. Attentive inspection of used plugs can be worth $2k of dyno-tuning IMHO. Everything in your engine bay is designed around 'the detonation,' and used plugs have been on the very front lines.

      I have an 08 535i on which I just installed a JB4, and of course it started blowing coils right away, but the thing is they blew like you described, at least some of them, because sometimes a coil going bad will do so almost in stages, and your engine light will come on then later turn off only to turn on again when the coil completely fails.

      @@ginelle46 BMS offered a great deal on the 14mm thin wall socket + Feeler gauge, gapping tool, and -2 step colder spark plugs for less than the cost of just the plugs anywhere else. So I've been using that. Their socket is also magnetic, so it helps to pull the plug out with it. (Not sure if it's still available, tho)
