    Which solar PV inverter is best or are they all the same?
    No, there's definitely performance characteristics regardless of the panels being used. Using the same panels I now have comparable data across multiple years for three different inverter brands and what might surprise you is its the Solis inverter that's best overall.
    My configuration:
    Solar Config:
    PV all JA solar
    14X280w (3.68kw Huawei )
    8X300w (2.0kw Solaredge)
    Myenergi Zappi 1, Eddi and Hub

    Have just had Solis Hybrid Inverter installed today (in my hall, not attic) but it won't be connected up until solar panels are installed next week - delay because of rain. I know zilch yet about the technical side but glad Solis gets the thumbs up here. Btw, love the family interaction in your video.

    Hi, You can't directly compare the two systems because the output voltage of the Solis system will most likely be higher if the panels are wired as one string (2x black DC cables at the inverter). The Solis system has more panels and a higher yield (Kw output) The higher DC voltage on the solis system will mean that the inverter will be more efficient, plus the inverter will turn on earlier in the morning and turn off later in the evening, especially in lower light conditions/less irradiance in autumn and winter. I hope this makes sense and helps explain why the system with the Solis inverter is yielding more energy

      that's what I was thinking. . . was it something 14 panels for the Solis & 8 panels in series for the SEdge ? No idea how many for Huawei.

    • @EVPuzzle
      @EVPuzzle  Рік тому

      That may be true about direct comparisons but that observation has proven true. Solaredge struggles with low light by comparison and this comparison most certainly helps to appreciate when not to use Solaredge, ie with fewer panels.
      Glad to admit it might look better with more panels

    Taking the technical content out it was great to see a video showing real life family issues lol. Technically though that is interesting, I remember researching for my previous house inverters and systems and ended up getting the SolarEdge, everything suggested it was the best. I am running 2 solis now, though not sure what size they are though a trip into the loft is due soon so will take a look. Hoping when powerdifferent finally get back to me they will offer a larger solis as part of expanding my smaller 2.4 array.

    The Solar Edge panels are better of laying above the other panels. The sun has an inclination of only 15 degrees in December which gives much more shadow on the lower placed panels.

    Your situation is so similar to mine it’s scary! I have a Solis inverter…Instead of ripping the house apart for an ASHP so I’m going with Jigsaw heat panels and a Tesla powerwall 2. The main reason is other batteries such as Givenergy have a maximum output of 3kW, rather than the 5/7kW of the powerwall. Payback time is not great, but much better than the heat pump, which I think suffers because it has to realistically be on all the time.

      You need your strings to be as close as possible to the grid voltage of even a little above for low light generation.
      I expect the main reason the smaller string struggles is that you can’t achieve the cut in voltage for as many hours and all those 20 and 50 watt hours add up.
      Smaller inverters do often have lower cut in voltages, but if you oversize the inverter, even slightly, it will really hurt the annual generation.
      The other issue is if solis are a bit generous with their algorithm inside their inverters. An in line ac meter is your best bet
      good on you for making the video!

    Hi Nigel, interesting as always. I do wonder tho where you say is one inverter comparable, in the instance of one's PV panels higher up the roof, is it possible to swap the PV Panel inputs between the inverters and then take the figures, or is there too much reconfiguration on the inverters each time the PV panels are swapped? I would imagine if able to look as soon as swapped you would immediately see if a big difference, or would you need to await a whole days or more stats?
    Anyway, keep it up, certainly getting me to start to pursue an installation and better use of supplies

    The performance of the inverter depends on its rated power in proportion to the string sizes. So a 2.4 kW inverter oversized for 3.6kW of panels will do much better in low light than a 3.6kW rated inverter from the same company. A five kW inverter on the same 3.6kW of panels will do even worse. Then there is the number if panels in each string, the more panels the better the low light performance. So if you had two Solaris inverters on those panel sets you would not see a consistent performance ratio at low light levels.

    I've taken the liberty of checking the specs of the Solis Mini 5G which has a startup voltage of 90v, the huawei is most likely 120v so it won't wake up until there's more light hitting the panels, losing out of generation either end of the day.
    I'm not sure how the Solar Edge compares because the startup voltage on their specs is listed at 350v but I don't know how optimisers complicate the direct comparison.

    Is it the orientation of the panel eg landscape or portrait. Does the actual cell absorb less light from the low angled sun in the winter compared the angle of light in the summer eg more closer to 90' relative to the cell. Does rotating the cell by 90' cause your losses.

    • @EVPuzzle
      @EVPuzzle  3 роки тому

      I don't think so but I'll check just to be sure. The fact I'm comparing 3 systems gives a sort of cross check so I think I'm safe to say the difference is the inverters. Solaredge panels are horizontal but the huawei and solis systems both used the vertical panels yet yielded different values, Solis better, Huawei worse

  • @healeydave
    @healeydave 3 роки тому +2

    Interesting, because I thought SolarEdge would easily out perform the Solis with the technology and the independent optimisers on each panel. After-all, that's why most people install SolarEdge because its supposed to out perform traditional Solar Strings (where-by any deteriorated panel affects the rest of the string).
    The trouble is there are so many factors its probably impossible to know if this is a quirk of your particular installation or whether it would be the same for other people too.

    • @EVPuzzle

      I agree and installers believe it too. Its supposed to be the best but its not, not in all situations. The more shade the better it performs. I remember being told that if you hook 2 inverters onto the same phase they end up fighting each other as one sees the grid voltage as that of the other inverter. Maybe this Is BS? Or you can manually set a max grid voltage on both to overcome this?

      Off grid potentially?
      I'd start by monitoring your usage if you haven't already.
      Anyse it to death to determine your needs for energy both now and in the future. EV charging etc
      Think whole picture, home, hot water, heating, car and plan for an ultimate goal.
      Then it's taking steps. Add solar. Maximise your potential and add more than you think you need. You'll want more so doing it now saves money installing twice.
      Unless you deliberately want to install solar in 2 stages, maybe roof then ground array etc.
      Think wind too if going off grid, you'll need power in winter without the grid.. Reliability is the no. 1 factor for wind even more than power

      I only use the inverter data to update a speadsheet. Importing data to Home Assistant has made monitoring much easier. Solar inverters are just providing power, completely independent of tariff issues .

      @EVPuzzle  Рік тому

      @@TommysDaddy I'm missing where you're going or trying to get to with this. The only issue with cheap rate tariffs at times overnight is setting your car to charge in the period and also charging your home battery at that time . Not draining your battery whilst ev charging is important too. None of that has anything to do with the data from inverters.
      Octopus agile is the tricky tariff as the cheap periods change every half hour potentially so there's more changes. Intelligent tariff is similar that charging periods can change unexpectedly
      If the periods are fixed it's easy you just set a schedule . Only the solaredge storedge solution prevents customers changing schedules as far I'm aware.

    • @EVPuzzle
      @EVPuzzle  3 роки тому +1

      There's lots more detail in my previous updates but to save you watch several solis is rather basic. It gives dat month and year solar stats but not grid import or export and no consumption data. The interface on Solis does provide decent live data either, Solaredge is better at that.
      Basically I find I very rarely look at the solis app, I tend to use myenergi or solaredge instead, just looking at solis for the monthly figures. It's App is more basic, fewer graphs, less detail. It suits those that don't want to look at graphs or data very often. Solaredge is just a slicker solution.
      Huawei is half way between the two, more data and graphs, important export plus battery data but no live data just 5 minute refresh and the timers for charging are very very awkward to get to from a seperate direct connection to the inverter not via the app. To look at historical battery soc across two days is sadly awkward on huawei taking maybe a dozen clicks to get there. Other solutions like victron is much easier to use.
      I think much of it is how professional the programming is. You get what you pay for and some companies have built apps and portals on the cheap it seems so their brochure can show a pretty picture and say they have an App.
      Hope that helps

    • @EVPuzzle
      @EVPuzzle  3 роки тому +1

      Just for solar I think its fine but if your thinking hybrid and battery be aware the interface for changing timers is on the inverter not on an app so you have to go to the inverter to set timers. If you were on Agile outgoing changing export timers it'd be nightmare.
      Solis might improve the software of course but in the 3 years I've had mine, it's hardly changed at all.
      If you're going battery to the battery software might mean you don't care about the solis app. Add a givenergy battery and that sees your solar too so you end up just using the Givenergy app and dont need the solis one much at all.
      I'd love to swap out my solaredge inverter for solis to gain efficiency and kwhs but I'd miss the solaredge app. Tough choices
