I’m a stuntman in Australia and as annoying as it is the main reason it’s so hard to find information on this stuff is safety and liability. It’s very expensive and time consuming to get into the industry but done so to minimize risk. Love the setup though looks like a fun workplace.
I don't think people realize how dangerous improper rigging can be, and how quickly it can go bad. Ive rigged and flown on some major films and I would caution the average Joe from not taking this VERY serious. This information isn't wrong per se, but its devoid of a very lot of important details.
@@Allenmarshall Well, im not there, so i can't be specific, but a few things i see in this video a running deadman: where is the performer attached to the line? That determines whether they land on their neck back or head or in between. Where are his feet going to go in reference to the actress who hits him, he could easily kick and/or smack her. They are sitting on a weight bag. That does not promise a hard stop which can lead to the movement of the action point. The ground padding is marginal for rehearsal, but that depends on other factors. The performer is taking falls on the line with a metal loop behind his head. The pull system looks like its interferes with their ceiling rails. I'm only guessing the system is set up with a 10:1 ratio for load, but i don't know what the nylon straps are weighted for, there are 2 or 3 knots in that nylon strap and that lowers the strength of the webbing. Its not just about supporting YOUR weight, the system needs to be build to withstand multiples of the system load, which is performer, puller, equipment, and forces generated by each when in motion. Weight bags in your pull system can harm the puller if not applied correctly....I could mention more, but my point when i first saw this before remains the same. While i love the creativity of this group/team, stunt rigging can go south really quickly if you are not consulting the right people and don't know what you're doing. They could save plenty of time and money by calling in the right person to come rig for them.
Not a question, just a safety observation for people with buying gear - I'd be wary about buying the 'rope' and 'loops' off amazon as a lot of the 'strength tested' products are faked especially the cheaper ones from chinese knock offs (hard to tell these apart from amazon). I'd recommend, if you're exploring and being safe, getting some dyneema for your wires (rope) and getting some climbing specific slings (loops). The slings are great as you can get multiple sizes for wrapping around different anchor points like trees that a small loop wouldnt fit around. Maillons are also a stapple for using on jerk vest pick points so you're not landing on chunky gear too. Beyond that, this is a nice (simple) lil insight into our world. Good job
This is indeed very good input. Next to that. You want to eliminate as many points of failure as possible and add redundency where possible. But be aware that this elimination of points of failure may never impact on your level of safety. I see in the video you have 2 loops together. There you should add a maillon for instance. It adds a point of failure yes, but the 2 loops can otherwise cut themselves thus impacting your overal safety. You should also be aware of the differences between the working load limit (WLL) and breaking load limit (BLL) of your equipment. those are 2 different things. industrial gear works mostly with WLL and is measured on static loads. Climbing gear works mostly with (BLL) and is measured with dynamics forces (hence the kN force on them). Each element in your rigging chain must have a BLL greater than the force of a max fall of your stuntperson. If not something will snap and injure your stuntperson. Also be aware of your mounting points. Some overhead beams in structures are calculated for the weigth of the roof + x amount of snow. Not everywhere you can go over that amount with a force of a human falling. Be sure to check if your beams can carry the weigth and handle the force that goes into them. Next to that you should also put a layer between your loops and beams to avoid the loop rubbing over the edge of the beam cutting the loop and snapping it. This is why almost all rigging is done on trusses. They know the force it can take and the round pipes eliminate the rubbing/cutting from the loops, ropes ect... Hope this helped, stay safe!

Im stunt performer in the US. If you get into this, just make sure you understand the risks. When you get into rigging you are taking lives and property into your hands. It takes one mistake to cause permanent physical damage to performers, crew, and property. I recommend hiring a rigger for small projects and building relationships that way.
Great vid! It would be cool to make a vid on how to remove the lines and harnesses in the editing of the film. I know it’s kinda basic, but something that has kept me from pursuing film making before. Keep up the good work!

Hi! Wow this was so informative!! I’m a kid trying to do this type of stuff with staying safe too. I am an actor and have done a bit of stunt work. Do you think I could get a jerk vest and a rope and carabiner and do small pulls on a smooth soft with mats floor? I have the mats and the body pads. Do you think I could with the help of my dad (my dad has not done stunt work but I think with just small pull on the ground he could handle it lol) These would all be done at my house it would not have any rigs on the ceiling. My dad would just be on the sides pulling the rope. This would all be done in a safe manner! Thank you so much for your time and thought in to this video! I can tell you have worked very hard! Hello, quick question what kind of harness would you recommend for a UFO scene. I would like the actor to levitate off the ground a few feet mimicking an alien abduction scene. Instead of ascending into the ufo she’s going fall back to the ground . Need help please respond. The abduction will take place outside and we’re considering using a man lift. Can we attach the actors harness to the man lift ?
We would probably recommend the full-body harness, since you have multiple points of contact. So, if you want to raise up the actor by the chest, to make it look like they are being pulled up by the chest, you can. Thanks! Feel free to let us know if you have any questions!

@@FenixFang Oh! Gotcha, those can be used as just extra safety for attaching the ropes to the vest or harness, since they are even sturdier than carabiners. Then, you would use a daisy chain rope to attach it to the person's hips if you wanted to do the spinning like we showed (amzn.to/3CB7HDP). I’m not sure you’re exactly “blowing the lid” off of how all of these stunts are done. Stunt rigging and work is taught freely among peers who have proven by knowledge and experience they are capable of handling themselves safely. Sadly, I’m not sure if I really saw that here. I know you said that the beam or load bearing object should be able to “support your weight”. I really need to explain how frightening that thought was. When you hang from a support you weigh 1G assuming no movement at all which is impossible. Anytime there is motion there will always be increased loading factors based on the acceleration of the mass. I hope you realize and can explain why simply putting pulley and rope on it inline doubles your load on the beam. If you weigh 100 lbs, there is a 200 lb load on the support. Any dynamic motion especially doing a pull, lift or jerk imparts MUCH greater loads than simply your body weight. The reason we don’t like tossing out techniques is for this very reason. Until you are able to clearly understand the physics and math behind each lift, you are endangering others. What is the actual load on the support and all other elements in the chain. When you do anything? How are the loads transmitted to other items? All of these things don’t come from books or days of studying but from years of experience working with others that have already learned these things before trying them on their own. Anytime you’re doing anything like this there should be at least ONE person who knows what they’re doing. Most pros might be very reticent to assist you after watching this video. If you want to do stunts, do the training from others who know, pay your dues, do the work, put in the time and get the respect you need for them to trust you enough to help more. The last thing you want is for something to ever go wrong due your lack of experience. To teach any skill you must first know EVERY way it can go wrong. You owe that those that thrust you with their lives.
As a stunt professional, this video and advocating for the DIY approach appears irresponsible and potentially dangerous. A novice doesn't know what they don't know. Imagine if you did a how-to-make-a-bomb video and people got hurt. Even experienced professionals get hurt and you are advocating for anyone to just give it a go? The best thing you could have done would be to recommend involving a stunt professional with the applicable experience and equipment. We happily help indy projects and guide best practices. I see this video is 2yrs old. The responsible thing to do would be to remove it from UA-cam.
