The T Craft were/are based in Saldanha and used to be scrambled when the trainer pilots from Langabaanweg airforce base were flying over the sea. They're propelled by two water jets so they're pretty quick off the mark and can be a lot of fun to operate. What happened to the SAS Outeniqua?
A well researched and presented video, thank you. One little error, you included Walvis Bay as a naval base in your Namaqurra segment. That base was ceded to Namibia in 1994, and I think that the boats that were there became part of the Namibian navy. Pretty much in the same way that vehicles and equipment (mostly non-lethal) that was left behind in 1989 became property of the NDF. My favourite is, purely because I was there during her arrival in Walvis Bay, the submarine SAS Johanna van der Merwe. In fact, I saw the arrival of all three Daphne Class vessels, but I somehow sneaked into a guided tour of the JvdM. I think I was 8 years old. 😁
Very good piece. Disturbingly sober presentation of the SAN. Notably, the Exocet is the real ship killer - quite impressive. I'd advise that you look at the spelling of Afrikaans names. Your references to "Spionkop" and Drakensburg" are both incorrect. Names should rather not be Anglicized, it creates confusion and "additional" assets we don't have on the Naval Vessel Register. The vessels mentioned are correctly spelled as "SAS Spioenkop" and SAS Drakensberg" I still give this video a thumbs-up!
So one fast attack diesel sub that might be hinderance, but so loud that i might hear it by walking to sea shore with a statoscope and the rest are ether target practice for anti-ship missiles since i didnt see single CIWS pods and the modular multipurpose shore vessels even if those did get container CIWS modules and AA missile launcher modules, thats just 2-3 vessels with any kind of potential against even rag tag rebels who have decent armaments. If rebels have say few SS-N-2 Styx, 4K44 Uran, C-701, or SS-N-22 Sunburn anti-ship missiles bought from black market those far exceed anything SA navy has to even return fire. If SA ships get to close to shore with in 5-8km and 9M17P Falanga-P's could be used from back of a truck or if rebels get with in 3-5km range 9M113 manpads could be used (though its not optimized for anti-ship role, it still can make holes into armor) and all of this is soviet era weapon systems that have been on the black market for ages. Look again with modern weapons and i'm pretty sure even mercenary group could easily deal this fleet, let alone navy that has even a bit experience and anti-submarine capabilities... Yeah SA needs lots of upgrades to even be considered proper navy, though props for having subs.
The new 'Warrior Class' replacing the Minister Class missile boats is laughable. The new ships are practicality useless. The Minister Class could actually be used in combat with their complement of Gabriel missiles, the new ones just look pretty.
Those 2 subs are not OoS for decommissioning- they have been made inoperable through sheer incompetence. With a primary school teacher as the min. for Defense, what else can you expect but a fucked up navy😢
Good work on the video! Just a point on speed mentioned - 22 knots not kilo knots but not the end of the world. My favourite vessel- too old for this video. She was the JVR (SAS Jan van Riebeeck) a thing of beauty. I look forward to more from you.
Ship speed is usually stated in knots, which is one nautical mile an hour. A nautical mile is a little longer than an imperial mile so 10 knots is about 11.5mph.
@@commandbrawler9348 I think not. Much as we might like it to be. The US and UK use miles an hour. The US has a different measure of volume in US gallons vs imperial gallons. The lesson: Use the measure that's the most appropriate to the relevant activity/interest.

I sailed on the Drakensburg and the Otteniqua before it was sold….I lived in Simons Town for 3 years and still have friends in the Navy. Very sad state of affairs there.
Well, Duh: It is about 1,852Km/h. Giving our subs a top speed of ~40,744Km/h. (22KKnots.) That is a _fair clip_ for submerged operations... And, Definitely an error while recording. The stated 41Km/h speed is _probably_ more accurate. (Actually, 0 knots is Accurate...)
@@JimmyShields-z2h 22 Squadron of the SAAF provides and operates Super Lynx maritime helicopters for the Navy. In their infinite wisdom the powers that be purchased only four of these helicopters, only one for every frigate, no "spares" to allow for servicing or any other downtime. Further wisdom of our great leaders was to buy them without any weapons, needless to say "buy them later" never happened. In addition 22 Sqdn have a number of other helicopters for maritime tasks, such as Oryx for the Drakensberg supply ship, and A109s for training or light utility purposes. As for maritime patrol aircraft, we're totally naked! That capability evaporated back in the 1980s with the retirement of the Shackleton squadron. @JimmyShields-z2h The lack of SAR capability is a national disgrace! Both of SA'S ICAO and IMO mandated areas of responsibility are absolutely enormous. Except for the NSRI (really great people, huge respect for them) that can handle rescues in the inshore zone, SA is totally incapable of fulfilling it's international obligations. IT so SAD how SF has fallen since the ANC has taken over .....
I was in the navy for many years , and 3 of our frigates were always in the dry docks and only 1 was viable for use , we scraped and repainted those things on a weekly basis because thats all we could afford 😂 , i recommend joining just for the basic training part of it , man that was loads of fun and learnt so much back then , it was in 2009 back then.
I too wanted to go to the Navy during my national service but ended up in the infantry instead. Good job, Hope to see more work from you.
Great research thoroughly enjoyed the update 🙌🏾
Great Video Man!
The Chinese and their BlackRock mates are fine with this. No rocking of the mafia cult boat.
Forget "Work not done"....we are under-resourced, have no weaponry and no Patriots, which makes this country a sitting duck waiting to be taken for a meal while we argue meaningless politics and power, thanks for the exposure. Just earned yourself a subscriber in me
I'm glad to see a video about our navy. Yes due to budget cutsany of the vessels haven't been upgraded o new ones been brought in to replenish the decompressioned ones. With the submarines out of the 3 one is a nuclear powered the reactor is a french built reactor.
Can you make another video like this, but with the sandf and their equipment and available vehicles, it would be pretty cool, great video btw
Hahaha way I am not surprise!! 😂😂😂
But the captains of those vessels probably all dry brand-new BMWs!!
the exocite are surface to surface antiship missiles not surface to air.
I'm an ex cop, I got an invite from some navy friends for a spin on a Namakura! Sumbitch! What a trip!
Really informative, thanks.
The vessels mentioned are correctly spelled as "SAS Spioenkop" and SAS Drakensberg"
I still give this video a thumbs-up!
Oh Woe! the days of the pp, pk and ps are long gone.
So what do all those navy personnel do?
If you go to Simonstown the corvette is just sitting there in the harbour the navy doesn't even use it for drills
Boring Imperial measurement, use metric like the rest of the world does!
@@commandbrawler9348 I think not. Much as we might like it to be. The US and UK use miles an hour. The US has a different measure of volume in US gallons vs imperial gallons. The lesson: Use the measure that's the most appropriate to the relevant activity/interest.
BS, ships travel nautical miles, at a a speed of, knots!
In 84 I could hear then they be practicing we have a living at the time in Simon s town in lotus river southern suburbs off cape town at the time I was living there Good year practicing that was so nice to hear it nothing at all no f-16 flying over anymore like they used to or the cheetahs which is really sad it was cool back in the day
Thanks for the video. Yuu mentioned I band radar. I think this should be X band.
2,700 sea hours in 2022/2023, works out at 130 days, at sea for 1 ship in th eentire SA Navy.
But how many staf and how many admirals??
Hope that Asher can do a similar analysis of the SA Air Force.....now wouldn't that be equally enlightening....
Question: What is the state of the Navy's manpower in terms of training and competence? You can have the most advanced equipment (and it appears we don't even have that!), but if your personnel are incompetent...
Walvisbay:is in Namibia…another issue-“artillery “are not used on ships.
Nice video - thanks for the research and information. Sobering. Depressing. Just one thing. We used to have Shackelton coastal patrol aircraft. I think these were all decommissioned years ago. I wonder what happened after decommissioning i.e. replacement/alternatives, if anything?
As an American I thought South Africa might be a considerable maritime power. I suppose not.
Not since 1994.
yes ur right about that one
We used to be.
It was in the 60's, 70's & 80's then came " Independance" and the only formidable military force in Africa collapsed.
@@jamespretorius3618Not before that, either
Shocking but I cannot say that I'm surprised. To inherent so many vessels but only to have a few vessels operating.
I saw 4 full classes of new recruits last week on route marchs 😮
Have you got updates on SANDF and SANA
SANA..( SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL AIRFORCE
Reason for asking..Which defence mechanisms are in place to counteract a attack on South Africa,as we have learned to our detriment how well protected our borders are
I sailed on the Drakensburg and the Otteniqua before it was sold….I lived in Simons Town for 3 years and still have friends in the Navy. Very sad state of affairs there.
Correction. The Exocet MM40 are SSM. Surface to surface anti ship missiles.
Otherwise good documentry
Walvis Bay was an exclave of South Africa when Namibia was still South West Africa but I thought that the South Africans had given it to Namibia?
I respect the fact that you guys have submarines.
Still a cool feat for a continent where we barely have submarines in that volume
It it to deter sharks apparently.
SO, the state of the navy is pretty much like the state of Joburg's roads/ water/ electric grid . . . . SOP for anc
Our maritime security is vulnerable. Diplomatic alliances that use our ports and coastline are also not safe.😭😭😭
What happened to the nuclear subs we bought from russia
That no one can operate because we dont know how?
I have to ask, what is a kilo knot?
😂
A metric knot? An AI knot?
A not, knot? Possibly. Doesn't look like they deploy a lot.
Fkn fast!
Well, Duh: It is about 1,852Km/h.
Giving our subs a top speed of ~40,744Km/h. (22KKnots.)
That is a _fair clip_ for submerged operations...
And, Definitely an error while recording.
The stated 41Km/h speed is _probably_ more accurate.
(Actually, 0 knots is Accurate...)
It's crazy how underpowered these are..
As an ex SAN telegraphist ,75 to 77, it seems the Navy was stronger then than it is now 😢
You are correct...no more mine hunting capability
A navy? Well, in effect, most of SA's EEZ belongs "de facto" to China's fishing trawlers. The EEZ is effectively lost already.
What's situation naval fleet air arm like helicopters n SAR planes for SA?
The inshore patrol aircraft, a Squadron of Piaggio P166 aircraft having been disposed of even earlier.
@IamtherealDodger67 thanks, it sounds not great defence, i know other navies have extra helicopters to cover maintenance although like other navies their weapons have use by date, i can bet some of navies struggle supply weapons for navies. As marine aircraft that not just play part in defence but smuggling, illegal contraband but most important SAR is necessary for nation of SA given strong sea states, i would hate be fishermen in need of help.
@JimmyShields-z2h The lack of SAR capability is a national disgrace! Both of SA'S ICAO and IMO mandated areas of responsibility are absolutely enormous. In both cases they basically extend halfway to Brazil and halfway to Australia (with "cutouts" for countries such as Mauritius) and southwards all the way to the the pole! Except for the NSRI (really great people, huge respect for them) that can handle rescues in the inshore zone, SA is totally incapable of fulfilling it's international obligations. There's a story (from a reliable source) that during last summer's fire season in the Western Cape the SAAF actually took the helicopter assigned to Ramaphosa and sent it to the Cape to sling water on the mountain fires, So sorry Mr President, no more chopper for you. Our defence budget needs to be at least double from where it's been for the last umpteen years. Here's just one of the latest news articles about the issues www.defenceweb.co.za/sa-defence/sa-defence-sa-defence/sandf-fleet-at-all-time-low-as-the-military-sits-helpless/
Makes the RNZN look huge
SAS was not commissioned d in 1987. Was in the navy and the SAS Drakensberg join how many time going up to Durban and to Walvisbay. I know because was in the navy in 1970/71. The only they could have commissioned her again is that she went for revamp
I was in the permanent force Navy 1983 to 1991. The SAS Drakensberg was a South African built vessel and i was drafted to her in 1986 during sea trials. She was commissioned into service in 1987. The SAS Tafelberg was the older fleet replenishment vessel and was still in service in 1987.
Drakensberg was commissioned in 1987
We have a partnership called the GNU. Only ship still afloat
Wildebees!
So, Asher, how have you avoided the ANC's net?
What is the use for all these non-funtional ships. thanks ANC
Then what is operational then
Thank god we have no enemies
Do a video about the army
Can the admiral staff even swim a basic requirement for a sailor. I know generals who can't shoot basic proficiency standards
The only navy in the world with more admirals than ships. And they wonder why they can't afford to buy cannon balls for them....
The RN has had more admirals than ships for years. So has the Thai navy and probably several others.
Interesting
Our Navy just like our Army and Airforce are nothing compared to what they once were, the ANC have been like a cancer to South Africa enriching themselves with no regard.
"That's a lot of artillery" for SA?Because they lack five inch deck gun, which gives them the appearance of a commercial vessel, not a war ship
A couple of working ships - and how many admirals?
Walvisbay? how?
What is an “exclusive economic zone?”
An area where the Chinese should not be fishing.
I read in a newspaper article in 2023 that SA Treasury stopped allocating money to the Navy because of irregular spending/corruption. If there is corruption - then I agree with Treasury - rather dont give the navy money - give them the minimum. First fix the corruption - then we can talk budget.
For a good laugh, check out the DEI New Zealand Navy. Yeah all 10, er I mean 9 ships now.
OH gawd and now I am laughing 😂😂😂😂😂 it's not at you.
